Both AST SpaceMobile and Starlink aim to connect ordinary mobile phones from low Earth orbit through mobile network operators, but they are pursuing different technical and commercial routes. Starlink describes its service as a space-based extension of partner carriers’ LTE networks. AST is building a wholesale cellular-broadband network around BlueBird satellites with very large phased-array antennas. The cited evidence puts Starlink’s service further along: SpaceX reported limited commercial messaging availability in two countries in February 2025, while AST said its SpaceMobile Service had not launched in a filing identified as June 2026.

How does Starlink Direct to Cell work?

SpaceX describes Direct to Cell satellites as cell towers in space. They connect with mobile network operator (MNO) partners in a way the company compares to roaming: participating operators provide LTE spectrum, and compatible phones can connect to the satellite when terrestrial coverage is unavailable. SpaceX’s February 2025 service note described partner spectrum in the 1.6–2.7 GHz range.

That design has to address a difficult radio link. A satellite is moving rapidly relative to a phone on the ground, while a standard phone has far less antenna gain and transmit power than a purpose-built satellite terminal. SpaceX identifies Doppler shift, latency and those phone limitations as engineering challenges. Its stated approach combines phased-array antennas, custom silicon and software intended to optimize the size and placement of satellite beams. These are company descriptions of the system, not results from an independent comparison.

In February 2025, SpaceX said its constellation had more than 400 satellites and reported commercial messaging availability for T-Mobile customers in the United States and One NZ customers in New Zealand. That is a dated snapshot, not a complete map of availability or features on October 4, 2026. The same note described expansion to other countries and later support for IoT, data and voice as plans.

How is AST SpaceMobile different from Starlink?

AST’s plan is to build a cellular-broadband network using its BlueBird low Earth orbit satellites, then distribute service through wholesale agreements with mobile operators. Its June 2026 SEC filing described a network intended to connect directly to off-the-shelf, unmodified devices. Rather than describe the system primarily as a roaming extension to an operator’s existing LTE network, AST emphasizes large satellite arrays, beamforming and cellular broadband capacity.

Satellite antenna design

AST’s June 2026 filing describes Block 2 BlueBird satellites with phased arrays of up to approximately 2,400 square feet, designed to provide up to ten times the bandwidth capacity of Block 1 satellites. AST says the large arrays and beamforming are intended to support voice, data and video. Those figures describe design and capacity goals; they do not establish the speed or experience a subscriber will receive in a commercial service.

Network and spectrum model

AST says its network combines spectrum licensed by mobile operator partners with spectrum it holds itself. Its official network page advertises peak speeds of over 150 Mbps per coverage cell for next-generation satellites. That is AST’s stated peak capability, not an independently verified typical subscriber speed.

By contrast, SpaceX’s February 2025 description specifically says its MNO partners supply LTE spectrum for Direct to Cell and frames the integration as similar to standard roaming. The difference is one of emphasis in the companies’ stated strategies; both make mobile operators central to reaching customers.

Spectrum description Partner-provided LTE spectrum in the 1.6–2.7 GHz range, according to SpaceX’s February 2025 note. Combination of spectrum licensed by operator partners and AST’s own holdings, according to AST.
Service ambition SpaceX’s February 2025 note reported messaging availability and described IoT, data and voice as later expansion plans. AST describes a planned cellular-broadband service intended to support voice, data and video.
Status in dated materials SpaceX reported commercial messaging in the United States with T-Mobile and New Zealand with One NZ in February 2025. A filing identified as June 2026 said the SpaceMobile Service had not launched and described beta testing and initial noncontinuous coverage as planned.

The table compares company descriptions and dated status statements, not a head-to-head service test. The reviewed materials do not establish an independent, comparable statistic for network quality across the two systems.

Which carriers and regions are involved?

Carrier partnerships do not by themselves mean that a consumer service is active in a particular country or included in a specific plan. SpaceX’s February 2025 report named T-Mobile in the United States and One NZ in New Zealand for commercial messaging at that time; it does not establish the full current country, carrier or feature list.

AST’s 2026 SEC materials describe wholesale arrangements with AT&T, Vodafone, Verizon and Saudi Telecom Company, among others, and report partnerships with more than 60 MNOs. The same filing cites partner footprints representing more than 3 billion subscribers. Those are partnership reach figures, not AST subscribers or active satellite coverage.

For the United States, AST’s filing describes intended AT&T service in the continental U.S., excluding Alaska and Hawaii, and Verizon service “when needed” in those geographies. It also describes a ten-year agreement with Saudi Telecom Company for Saudi Arabia and key regional markets, and a Vodafone/SatCo distribution arrangement. These are contract and intended-market descriptions, not a list of retail plans currently available to sign up for.

AST’s official FAQ says it is targeting initial U.S. beta users through AT&T and Verizon, with nationwide coverage expected to be noncontinuous at first. That is a company target, not confirmation that beta enrollment is open or that any reader is eligible.

What does the rollout evidence show?

Starlink: reported commercial messaging, with the date attached

SpaceX’s February 2025 note said Direct to Cell messaging was commercially available with T-Mobile in the United States and One NZ in New Zealand. It also outlined future expansion and additional service types. Because that status statement is from February 2025, it should not be treated as a definitive account of what is offered in every market in October 2026; current availability, features and eligibility need to be confirmed with the relevant carrier.

AST: planned service and a changing spacecraft count

AST’s filing identified as June 2026 said the SpaceMobile Service had not launched and described a limited, noncontinuous service and beta testing as planned steps before rollout. Separately, the company’s 2026 materials list BB6 as launched in December 2025, BB8–BB10 in June 2026 and BB11–BB13 on August 5, 2026—13 BlueBird spacecraft launched in total by that August date. The date attached to the filing’s reported no-launch status and the later spacecraft tally should be kept distinct: launches do not, by themselves, establish that a consumer service has started.

The same materials say BB7 reached an orbit too low to sustain operations and was de-orbited. AST described a target of approximately 45 satellites in early 2027 based on expectations at the time. That target is forward-looking; the filing identifies manufacturing, launch readiness, regulatory approvals and other uncertainties that could affect timing.

Regulatory context

The FCC’s December 2024 order provides historical context for the U.S. supplemental coverage from space framework, SpaceX’s authorization context and spectrum arrangements then being sought by AST and AT&T. It predates the later status statements above, so it should not be used alone to determine current authorizations or availability.

Do the advertised performance figures show which service is faster?

No. The numbers in these materials describe different things and are not a comparable test of consumer experience.

  • AST demonstration: AST’s 2026 SEC filing reports a prior peak result of 98.9 Mbps directly to a standard, unmodified smartphone. This is a reported peak demonstration result, not a typical commercial rate.
  • AST next-generation claim: AST’s official network page, accessed October 4, 2026, advertises over 150 Mbps per coverage cell for next-generation satellites. It is a company-stated peak capability, not independently verified delivered performance.
  • AST Block 2 design: The filing’s up-to-approximately-2,400-square-foot array area and up-to-ten-times Block 1 bandwidth capacity are design claims, not measured subscriber speeds.
  • Starlink constellation snapshot: SpaceX’s February 2025 note said the constellation had more than 400 satellites at that time. This historical count says nothing by itself about current Direct to Cell availability or speed.

The cited materials do not provide an independent, like-for-like field test of AST and Starlink. A peak demonstration, a per-cell capability claim and a satellite count cannot establish which network performs better for a particular user.

What would a subscriber need?

For the service models described by both companies, the intended device is an ordinary mobile phone rather than a dedicated satellite handset, user dish or special antenna. The important dependency is the mobile operator: service availability and eligibility depend on the participating carrier, market and applicable offering. The cited materials do not establish current plan prices or a complete carrier-by-carrier availability list, so check the operator’s current information before relying on coverage.
