India won 107 medals at the Hangzhou 2023 Asian Games and 39 at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The Asian Games tally was 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze; the Commonwealth Games tally was 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. These are results from different years and different sports programmes, so the raw totals are not a like-for-like measure of performance.

India’s medal totals at a glance

The latest completed editions in the reported results are Hangzhou 2023 for the Asian Games and Glasgow 2026 for the Commonwealth Games. The table also shows recent editions to put those headline figures in context. Contingent sizes are included where the cited official reports provide them.

The results and contingent figures for the listed editions are reported by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India. Birmingham 2022’s medal count is also reported in the UK government’s event summary.

What the latest results show

Asian Games: India’s record tally in 2023

India’s 107 medals at Hangzhou 2023 were its highest-ever Asian Games tally, according to PIB. The government described the edition as a landmark after India recorded that total. The result was made up of 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze medals.

Commonwealth Games: 39 medals in Glasgow in 2026

PIB reports that India won 39 medals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games: 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. The event ran from 23 July to 2 August 2026, and PIB lists India’s contingent as 124 members.

Recent Commonwealth results include Birmingham 2022

At Birmingham 2022, India won 61 medals—22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze—and finished fourth. That event included 19 sports and 280 medal events, including 44 para-sport events across eight para sports, according to the UK government.

Why the totals are not a direct performance ranking

India’s latest Asian Games total is larger than its latest Commonwealth Games total, but the difference alone does not show which performance was stronger. The editions took place in different years and offered different opportunities to compete for medals.

For example, PIB describes Glasgow 2026 as a 10-sport programme with six fully integrated para sports, while Birmingham 2022 had 19 sports and 280 medal events. The available figures do not provide a single harmonized count of medal events or participation for every edition in the table, so comparing raw totals cannot account for those differences.

Contingent size adds context, but dividing medals by athletes would not create a fair performance score. Team events can produce medals for many athletes, and qualification rules, event availability and the mix of sports vary. A sound comparison should consider the edition year, medal mix, contingent size and programme together rather than treating the total as a normalized measure.

How India’s results have changed across recent editions

India’s Asian Games totals rose across the three editions shown, from 57 medals in Incheon 2014 to 69 in Jakarta 2018 and 107 in Hangzhou 2023. The Commonwealth Games totals were 64 in Glasgow 2014, 66 at Gold Coast 2018, 61 in Birmingham 2022 and 39 in Glasgow 2026.

These sequences describe the results, not a controlled trend in performance. The editions differed in contingent size and sports programme, and the reported sources do not supply a common dataset that would adjust the totals for those differences.

Sports that contribute medals for India

PIB names wrestling, weightlifting, table tennis, badminton and athletics among recurring Indian medal-contributing sports. That is a general observation; it is not a sport-by-sport breakdown for every edition in the table, so it should not be read as a claim that each sport contributed medals at every Games.
