Ashly Burch, the voice and performance actor behind Aloy in the Horizon games, said a reported Sony demonstration of an AI-driven Aloy made her worried about game performance as an art form. Burch also said Guerrilla Games told her the demo was not in active development and did not use her voice, face, or motion-capture data. Those are assurances she relayed, not independently verified findings.
What was the AI Aloy demonstration?
On March 10, 2025, GameSpot reported that a circulated video showed a PlayStation Studios technology demonstration. In it, Sony Interactive Entertainment software engineering director Sharwin Raghoebardajal spoke with an AI-driven version of Aloy. Coverage described generated facial animation, spoken responses, and a synthetic voice; Raghoebardajal called it “just a glimpse of what is possible.” The video was later removed after circulating online. Did Sony use Ashly Burch’s voice to make AI Aloy?
Burch said Guerrilla Games contacted her and told her the demonstration did not use her voice, face, or motion-capture performance data. Burch said, “I feel worried about this art form — game performance as an art form.” Her concern was not limited to her own role or the Horizon series. She framed the issue as one of safeguards rather than opposition to every use of AI: “The technology isn’t the problem.” Describing protections performers were seeking, she said: “What we’re fighting for is that you have to get our consent before you make an AI version of us in any form. You have to compensate us fairly and you have to tell us how you’re using this AI double.” (Futurism, March 17, 2025)
Was Sony replacing Aloy’s actor?
The reported video showed a prototype interaction, but the available accounts do not establish that Sony planned to replace Burch or use an AI Aloy in a game. Burch’s account that Guerrilla said the demo was not in active development is relevant, but it remains an assurance she reported rather than independent confirmation of the company’s plans. A technology demonstration alone is not evidence of a replacement decision.

Why are video-game actors concerned about AI?
The stakes depend on what a tool does and how a performer’s identity or work is involved. Burch’s later comments illustrate a distinction between using AI to streamline some development tasks and generating or manipulating a performer-like voice, face, or movement. A workflow aid does not necessarily replicate an actor; a digital double can raise questions about permission, payment, disclosure, control, and whether paid performance work is being displaced. In a June 23, 2025 interview, Burch acknowledged that AI could help developers while warning about safeguards and the possible replacement of smaller voiceover roles. (GameSpot, June 23, 2025)
