In the U.S., Apple Watch battery service typically costs about $99 out of warranty for an eligible, undamaged watch. With AppleCare+, Apple charges no additional battery-service fee when Apple confirms that the battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity. The exact price depends on the model, location, taxes, shipping, inspection results, and whether Apple or an Authorized Service Provider handles the service.

Apple may also exchange the watch instead of replacing the battery cell inside your exact device. Before paying, check the live estimate on Apple’s Apple Watch repair page.

Apple Watch Battery Replacement Cost in 2026

U.S. price snapshot: August 10, 2026.

If your Apple Watch no longer lasts through the day, the likely Apple price is straightforward but not universal: plan on approximately $99 for out-of-warranty battery service if the watch is eligible and does not have other damage. AppleCare+ can reduce the additional battery-service charge to $0 when Apple’s diagnostics confirm the battery is below its 80% capacity threshold.

That price is for Apple’s service process—not necessarily for an in-place battery-cell replacement. Apple’s terms allow it to repair or exchange the product, so you may receive a replacement watch rather than your original watch with a new battery. Read on to check your battery health, confirm eligibility, understand the coverage rules, and decide whether repairing or replacing the watch makes more financial sense.

Apple Watch battery service prices at a glance

Situation Likely customer charge What can change the result
AppleCare+ and Apple confirms capacity below 80% $0 additional battery-service fee You still pay the AppleCare+ plan premiums. Apple must determine that the battery qualifies, and other damage can affect eligibility.
Out of warranty, eligible Apple Watch Typically about $99 in the U.S. Apple’s live estimate, inspection, model, location, tax, shipping, and parts availability control the final amount.
Cracked, bent, liquid-damaged, modified, obsolete, or otherwise ineligible watch Potentially much higher—or unavailable Apple may quote whole-device or other-damage service instead of battery-only service, or decline service.

Apple does not publish a permanent, simple model-by-model price table on its public repair page. Its estimate tool generates a price after you select the watch and service issue. Apple also says the product must be inspected, taxes and shipping may apply, and Apple Authorized Service Providers can set their own out-of-warranty fees. Treat $99 as a typical current U.S. estimate, not a guaranteed universal price. Check the live Apple estimate before authorizing service.

Check whether the battery actually needs service

On the Apple Watch, open:

  1. Settings
  2. Battery
  3. Battery Health
  4. Scroll to Maximum Capacity

Apple describes Maximum Capacity as the battery’s capacity compared with when it was new. The screen may also display Battery Needs Service. Apple’s instructions for checking the battery and addressing battery problems are available in its Apple Watch battery support guide.

A low percentage does not automatically guarantee a paid repair or an AppleCare+ claim. In particular, AppleCare+ uses the wording “less than 80%”. A watch showing exactly 80% may not qualify automatically under that benefit, and Apple may run additional diagnostics.

When poor battery life does not necessarily mean a worn-out battery

Fast drain can also come from cellular use, weak cellular coverage, GPS workouts, frequent screen activity, speaker audio, or background work after a watchOS update. If the problem began immediately after an update, Apple recommends waiting several days and then reassessing while background tasks finish.

Try these limited troubleshooting steps before paying for service:

  • Turn on Low Power Mode: press the side button to open Control Center, tap the battery-percentage button, and turn on Low Power Mode.
  • Turn off Always On, if your model supports it: open Settings → Display & Brightness → Always On, then turn it off.
  • Review unusually demanding use, especially GPS workouts, cellular operation in weak coverage, and extended speaker audio.
  • If the issue follows an update, wait several days and compare battery behavior again.

Do not permanently disable Optimized Battery Charging or Optimized Charge Limit just to improve short-term runtime. Apple warns that doing so can increase battery wear.

Does Apple replace the battery or replace the watch?

“Battery replacement” is convenient shorthand, but Apple’s service may not involve opening your exact watch and installing a new cell. Apple’s service terms permit Apple to repair or exchange the product.

As a result, Apple may provide a replacement unit rather than return the same physical watch. Apple says replacement equipment may contain new or previously used genuine Apple parts that meet its functional requirements. That means you should not assume that you will receive:

  • the same serial number;
  • the same physical watch;
  • a brand-new retail device;
  • a newer Apple Watch Series as an upgrade;
  • the same cosmetic condition;
  • the same color or finish; or
  • a guaranteed replacement with the exact same configuration unless the service representative confirms it.

If keeping the original watch matters—for example, because of its condition, engraving, serial number, or sentimental value—ask the Apple Store or service provider about the expected service path before authorizing it. Apple’s AppleCare+ terms explain the repair-and-exchange provisions.

AppleCare+, warranty, and the 80% rule

AppleCare+ battery service

Under the current U.S. AppleCare+ terms, Apple provides battery service at no additional fee when it determines that the battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity. This does not make the AppleCare+ plan itself free; you must include all remaining plan premiums when comparing AppleCare+ with a one-time $99 repair.

AppleCare+ accidental-damage service is a separate benefit with a separate fee. The current U.S. plan document lists:

  • $69 for Apple Watch models excluding Ultra, Edition, and Hermès;
  • $79 for Apple Watch Ultra, Edition, and Hermès models.

Those fees relate to accidental damage, not the qualifying battery-service benefit. A cracked watch with a weak battery may therefore be handled as an accidental-damage or other-damage claim rather than as a simple free battery service.

AppleCare+ may provide mail-in service, in-person service, and Express Replacement depending on eligibility and location. It is not retroactive: enrolling after damage has already occurred does not turn that damage into a covered incident. Unauthorized modifications or third-party parts can also affect AppleCare+ eligibility. See the current AppleCare+ terms for the applicable plan rules.

Apple’s standard limited warranty

For U.S. purchases, Apple’s standard limited warranty generally covers manufacturing defects for one year. It does not generally cover normal battery wear. A defective battery may be covered during the warranty period, but ordinary capacity loss from use is a different situation.

Consumer-protection laws may provide additional rights depending on the state or other jurisdiction. Do not use the AppleCare+ 80% threshold as a general warranty rule: “less than 80%” is the AppleCare+ battery-service criterion, not a promise that every battery below 80% is automatically covered by the standard warranty.

Apple says Apple Watch batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of their original capacity after 1,000 complete charge cycles under stated conditions. That is a design specification, not a guarantee that every watch will display exactly 80% after exactly 1,000 cycles. Apple’s battery information is available on its battery service and recycling page.

Which Apple Watch generations are likely to qualify?

Apple does not service every Apple Watch indefinitely. Eligibility depends on the model, its service classification, available parts, location, and the watch’s physical condition.

Series 6 and newer

Series 6 and later models are generally the strongest candidates for official battery service, subject to inspection. That includes newer Series models and does not mean every individual configuration is guaranteed service.

Apple Watch SE, SE 2, and SE 3

Check the live estimate and availability for each SE generation. The SE name alone does not guarantee that a particular watch will receive the same service option in every location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Watch Ultra models

Apple Watch Ultra generations should also be checked through Apple’s estimator. Do not assume that the Ultra’s larger battery means battery service has a separate, automatically higher or lower price. Apple’s live quote and inspection determine the available service.

Series 3, Series 4, and Series 5

Verify eligibility before spending money on an older watch. As of Apple’s list published or updated June 16, 2026, numerous Series 3, Series 4, and Series 5 variants are classified as vintage. Vintage service may be available only through an Apple Store, may depend on parts and location, and is not guaranteed.

Apple generally considers a product vintage more than five and fewer than seven years after it stopped distributing that product. Products generally become obsolete more than seven years after distribution ends. Apple discontinues hardware service for obsolete products, and service providers cannot order parts for them. The original Apple Watch, Series 1, Series 2, and certain Series 4 variants are listed as obsolete or otherwise unavailable on Apple’s vintage and obsolete products page.

Use Apple’s Apple Watch model-identification guide if you are unsure which generation you own. For an obsolete watch, replacement—or a reputable independent repair shop if you specifically want to keep the device—is usually more realistic than Apple service.

How to request Apple Watch battery service

  1. Identify the exact model. Use Apple’s model-identification guide or the information on the watch and its paired iPhone.
  2. Check battery health. On the watch, use Settings → Battery → Battery Health and note Maximum Capacity and any service message.
  3. Open Apple’s repair page. Go to Apple Watch Service and Repair, select your device, and choose the battery or service issue.
  4. Review the estimate and available locations. Depending on your area and parts availability, Apple may offer an Apple Store, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or mail-in service.
  5. Wait for inspection and confirmation. The online estimate is not necessarily the final invoice. Apple says inspection, tax, shipping, service location, and parts availability can affect the final result.

Apple’s repair page says service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remainder of the applicable warranty, whichever is longer. The same page also explains available service channels and repair conditions.

What if the watch has damage?

A battery-only estimate assumes that the watch is otherwise eligible for that type of service. Apple may change the service path if inspection finds:

  • a cracked or badly damaged display;
  • a bent or dented case;
  • damage to the rear crystal or sensor area;
  • liquid damage;
  • battery swelling that has damaged the screen or enclosure;
  • a watch that will not power on or cannot complete diagnostics;
  • previous third-party opening, modification, or non-genuine parts;
  • a missing or altered serial number; or
  • an obsolete model or unavailable parts.

Apple may refuse battery-only service, quote a broader repair or replacement-device service, or require payment of the applicable replacement value when a product is ineligible. A $99 estimate should therefore not be treated as protection against every other hardware problem.

If the battery is swollen: stop wearing and charging the watch. Do not press the display back into the case or attempt to puncture, bend, or open the battery. Arrange professional service through Apple or a qualified repair provider.

Apple, an Authorized Service Provider, or an independent shop?

Option Cost profile Advantages Risks or limitations
Apple Typically about $99 out of warranty for eligible service Official service channel, genuine Apple service, AppleCare+ support, and a possible exchange unit Inspection can change the price or eligibility; you may not receive the same physical watch.
Apple Authorized Service Provider Varies; may differ from Apple’s own estimate Local convenience and Apple-authorized service Apple says Authorized Service Providers can set their own out-of-warranty fees.
Independent repair shop Variable and potentially lower May service older or obsolete watches and may let you retain the exact device Parts, workmanship, warranty, diagnostics, and water-resistance testing vary.
DIY Parts roughly $25–$80 before tools and other costs Lowest direct parts cost and control over the original watch High difficulty; risk of damaging the display, cables, adhesive, sensors, or water resistance.

Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider

The official route gives you the best chance of using genuine Apple parts and the intended service and testing process. It also preserves the practical value of AppleCare+ when the watch qualifies. The trade-offs are the possibility of an exchange rather than an in-place repair, a higher quote when other damage is found, and potentially different pricing at an Authorized Service Provider.

Independent repair shop

An experienced independent shop may be worthwhile for an older watch that Apple classifies as vintage or obsolete, or when keeping the exact watch matters. Ask in writing:

  • which battery and parts will be used;
  • whether the shop has repaired your specific Apple Watch generation;
  • what happens if the watch is already swollen or damaged;
  • what diagnostic testing is included;
  • whether the shop tests or documents water resistance after repair; and
  • the length and limits of the repair warranty.

Opening an Apple Watch can damage its display, flex cables, adhesive, or sensors. Do not assume a third-party repair restores the original water-resistance performance. Unauthorized repair or third-party parts may also affect future Apple warranty or AppleCare+ eligibility, but that does not mean every independent repair automatically eliminates every legal right or every form of coverage.

DIY battery replacement

iFixit lists representative Apple Watch replacement batteries at approximately $24.99 for several standard Series models, $29.99 for some Series 3 batteries, and $79.99 for a first-generation Ultra battery. Those are parts prices only. Tools, adhesive, shipping, failed-repair risk, and the value of your time are extra. See iFixit’s Apple Watch battery parts listings for current examples.

Is Apple Watch battery replacement worth $99?

There is no single answer for every generation. Use the repair quote, the watch’s condition, software usefulness, and the cost of a comparable replacement—not just the original purchase price.

Replacement Battery Kit Compatible with Apple Watch Series 1 42mm A1579, with Tools, Manual, Tape
  • 【Model Compatibility】: Compatible with Apple Watch Series 1 42mm. Not compatible with 38mm models. Please verify your device model before installation.
  • 【Complete Repair Kit Included】: Package includes precision tools, screen adhesive, and a step-by-step illustrated manual for efficient battery replacement without professional help.
  • 【Reliable Battery Cell】: Fit For Watch Series 1 42mm OEM-grade 0-cycle Li-ion battery supports stable charging and extended performance. Built-in IC protects against overcharge, overheating, and short circuits.

  • 【Secure and Precise Fit】: Engineered to match the original battery size for a perfect fit inside the watch. Ensures smooth installation and reliable performance after replacement.

Repair is usually sensible when:

  • The watch is otherwise undamaged and Apple confirms the battery-service price near $99.
  • It is a Series 6 or newer, a relatively recent SE, or an Ultra that still meets your needs.
  • You like the watch’s size, finish, cellular configuration, or existing features.
  • A comparable used or refurbished replacement costs substantially more than the repair.
  • The watch is a higher-end Ultra, stainless-steel, titanium, Edition, or Hermès model whose replacement cost is high.

Replacement is usually better when:

  • The watch is obsolete or near the end of its useful software-support life.
  • It has a cracked display, bent case, liquid damage, or another expensive fault.
  • Apple’s final quote approaches the price of a good used or refurbished replacement.
  • You want newer health, safety, charging, cellular, or performance features.
  • You would be paying to extend the life of a Series 3–5 watch that is already limited by age or software support.

For a new-device reference point, Apple’s U.S. lineup announcement dated January 2026 lists the Apple Watch SE 3 from $249, Series 11 from $399, and Ultra 3 from $799. These are dated new-device starting prices—not used-market values—and Apple pricing and promotions can change. Compare the repair with Apple’s current new and refurbished offerings, reputable used listings, retailer or carrier promotions, and any trade-in value before deciding. The current lineup source is Apple’s January 2026 Apple Watch announcement.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health.
  2. Confirm whether AppleCare+ is active and whether Apple shows capacity below 80%.
  3. Identify the exact model and check Apple’s vintage or obsolete list.
  4. Inspect the case, display, rear crystal, and sensor area for damage.
  5. Get the live estimate from Apple rather than relying only on a general $99 figure.
  6. Compare the final quote with the price of a comparable used, refurbished, or new watch.
  7. If choosing an independent repairer, get the parts, warranty, diagnostics, and water-resistance policy in writing.
  8. If Apple may exchange the watch, ask what happens to the serial number, physical unit, configuration, and cosmetic condition before authorizing service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Apple Watch battery replacement free with AppleCare+?

AppleCare+ provides battery service with no additional battery-service fee when Apple determines that the battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity. You still pay the AppleCare+ plan premiums, and accidental-damage fees are separate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my Apple Watch battery health is exactly 80%?

AppleCare+ uses a “less than 80%” criterion, so exactly 80% may not qualify automatically. Apple may also run diagnostics. If runtime is poor but capacity is above the threshold, review cellular use, GPS workouts, weak signal, Always On, and recent watchOS updates before requesting service.

Does Apple replace the whole Apple Watch?

Apple’s terms allow Apple to repair or exchange the product. It may provide a replacement watch instead of replacing the battery inside your original device. Do not assume the replacement will have the same serial number, cosmetic condition, color, or a newer generation.

Can Apple replace the battery in a Series 3, Series 4, or Series 5?

Possibly, but verify first. Many Series 3–5 variants are currently classified as vintage, and vintage service depends on parts and location. Obsolete models generally no longer receive Apple hardware service.

Does Apple service Apple Watch Ultra batteries?

Ultra models can be eligible for battery service, but you must check the live estimate for the exact generation and location. Do not assume the larger Ultra battery creates a separate standard price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I replace an Apple Watch battery myself?

Yes, replacement parts are available, but the repair is delicate and parts prices do not include tools, adhesive, labor, or failed-repair risk. DIY is best limited to people experienced with small electronics who accept the risk of damaging the display, cables, sensors, or water resistance.

Will I get the same Apple Watch back from Apple?

Not necessarily. Apple may exchange the product. Ask the service channel before authorizing if retaining the original physical watch, serial number, color, or cosmetic condition is important.

Will Apple service a cracked Apple Watch?

A cracked display, damaged case, rear crystal, liquid damage, swelling, or prior unauthorized repair can prevent battery-only service or produce a much higher quote. Apple must inspect the watch before confirming the final service path.

How long does Apple Watch battery service take?

Apple offers in-person and mail-in service, but the available option and turnaround vary by location, parts availability, inspection, and service type. Ask the selected Apple Store or provider for the current estimate; do not assume that every battery claim is completed while you wait.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is $99 worth paying for an older Apple Watch?

Usually check eligibility and software support first. A repair is more defensible for an undamaged Series 6 or newer, a recent SE, or an Ultra. For an obsolete or aging Series 3–5 watch, compare the full quote with a good used or refurbished replacement before spending.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: For an eligible, undamaged Apple Watch in the U.S., budget about $99 for Apple battery service as of August 10, 2026. AppleCare+ can make the additional battery-service charge $0 when Apple confirms capacity below 80%. Because Apple may exchange the watch and because damage, age, taxes, shipping, parts, and provider pricing can change the result, use Apple’s live estimator and wait for inspection before treating any price as final. Repair is generally worthwhile for a supported watch in good condition; for an obsolete or damaged model, compare the quote with a used, refurbished, or newer replacement.
