For Dolby TrueHD Atmos from local Blu-ray remuxes, choose NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro. NVIDIA documents Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD and DTS:X passthrough over HDMI, making it the better fit for a Plex library or another local-media player feeding an AV receiver. Choose Apple TV 4K when streaming services, Apple integration and a simpler app-first experience matter more; its documented Atmos playback is aimed at compatible streaming content, typically delivered as Dolby Digital Plus.
The two devices can both display an Atmos logo, but that logo does not identify the underlying codec. Blu-ray remuxes commonly carry Atmos metadata inside lossless Dolby TrueHD, while streaming services commonly use the compressed Dolby Digital Plus form. Your source, receiver and HDMI wiring therefore matter as much as the streamer.
Dolby Atmos is a format family, not one identical signal
Dolby Atmos describes object-based surround sound, but Atmos can be carried in different codecs. That distinction determines whether a streamer can deliver the same audio quality as a Blu-ray disc.

Commercial Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray releases commonly store Atmos as metadata within Dolby TrueHD. TrueHD is lossless: the decoded result is intended to reproduce the studio master without the perceptual compression used by streaming codecs. A remux preserves that original audio track in a file, so the playback device must pass the bitstream through HDMI to an AVR or soundbar that can decode it.

NVIDIA’s 2026 SHIELD specifications explicitly list Dolby TrueHD (pass-through). The SHIELD user guide also states that SHIELD TV supports Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos over HDMI. That is the key documented capability for a local library containing Blu-ray-quality Atmos.
Dolby Digital Plus Atmos for streaming
Streaming platforms generally deliver Atmos in Dolby Digital Plus (also called E-AC-3), a compressed codec designed for internet delivery. It can sound very good, but it is not the same bitstream as lossless TrueHD. Apple lists Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 and Dolby Atmos support for Apple TV 4K and says the player selects the highest quality supported by the system and the content.
An Atmos badge on a streaming title therefore does not mean that title contains a Blu-ray-equivalent TrueHD track. The service, subscription tier, title, region and playback device determine which soundtrack is actually available.
Why the logos cannot settle this comparison
Both products can be part of an Atmos system, yet they target different sources. The relevant question is not “Does it support Atmos?” but “Can it pass through the codec in my files, through my HDMI chain, to my decoder?” For local remuxes, TrueHD passthrough is the deciding requirement.

It explicitly passes through the required lossless codecs
For a remux with a Dolby TrueHD Atmos track, the SHIELD can send the untouched bitstream over HDMI so the AVR or soundbar performs the decode. NVIDIA also lists DTS-HD and DTS:X passthrough, which matters if your library includes discs authored with those soundtracks instead of Dolby.

Passthrough is different from converting audio inside the streamer. The receiving AVR must support the codec; otherwise it may fall back to a lower format or produce silence. Confirm the receiver’s decoder list before buying.
It is designed around local libraries
NVIDIA lists Plex support, two USB 3.0 ports and expandable storage on SHIELD TV Pro. That combination suits a library stored on attached USB media or reached over a home network. The 16 GB internal-storage figure is for the device itself, not a claim that it can hold a large movie collection; plan external or network storage for remuxes.

Its HDR list is narrower than Apple’s

Why Apple TV 4K is the streaming-first choice
It prioritizes app-based viewing
Apple TV 4K is the better fit when most viewing comes from commercial streaming applications, Apple services or an Apple-centered home. Its interface and ecosystem integration can be simpler than maintaining a local-server workflow. Atmos playback still depends on a title that offers Atmos and on a compatible AVR, soundbar and display chain.

Apple lists Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 and Dolby Atmos. Apple also says Apple TV 4K automatically plays the highest quality supported by the home-entertainment setup and available from the content. That means a non-Atmos title, a plan without Atmos access, or an incompatible receiver will result in a different soundtrack even when the box itself supports Atmos.

It supports more listed HDR variants
Apple’s list includes Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. For a television that uses HDR10+ or HLG, this broader published list may be more useful than SHIELD’s Dolby Vision/HDR10 list. Actual output remains dependent on the television, the title and the HDMI chain.
HomePod and other Apple-device considerations
Apple TV 4K can make sense when you already use Apple services or HomePod speakers and want one integrated control experience. That ecosystem advantage is separate from lossless local-audio capability; it does not turn a streaming Dolby Digital Plus track into a TrueHD track.
Wire the system so the receiver can decode Atmos

Recommended Apple TV 4K connection
- Connect Apple TV 4K directly to an HDMI input on the Atmos-capable AVR or soundbar.
- Connect that AVR or soundbar to the TV.
- Play a title whose service listing identifies Atmos and verify the receiver’s incoming-format display.
- Use the television’s audio settings only for the functions your system requires; the receiver should remain the device decoding Atmos.
Why ARC can prevent Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos mode
Apple states that Apple TV 4K uses a high-bandwidth form of Dolby Atmos that does not work over ARC connections. If Apple TV is plugged into the television and audio is sent back to the receiver through ARC, Atmos may be unavailable or reduced. Direct Apple TV-to-AVR or Apple TV-to-soundbar wiring is the safer arrangement. Check the equipment manuals if your system uses a different HDMI-return design.
What happens with a TV-only setup
Television speakers cannot reproduce a discrete home-theater Atmos field in the same way as an AVR and speaker system. Troubleshoot the common Atmos failures
The receiver shows Dolby Digital instead of TrueHD
First confirm that the file actually contains a Dolby TrueHD Atmos track rather than a standard Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus track. Then check that the media player is set to HDMI passthrough and that the SHIELD is connected directly to the AVR or soundbar. If the receiver cannot decode TrueHD, it may fall back to a compatible format.

The receiver shows stereo PCM
Check for a forced stereo setting in the player, SHIELD audio settings or AVR input configuration. Re-enable bitstream or passthrough and replay a known-compatible file. Also inspect the HDMI cable path for an intermediate television or switch that does not support the required audio signaling.

Apple TV plays the title but no Atmos appears
Verify that the specific title and service plan include Atmos, then confirm that the AVR or soundbar reports Atmos-capable input. If Apple TV is connected to the TV and returning sound through ARC, move it to a direct AVR or soundbar input because Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos mode does not work over ARC.
Video works but HDR does not match expectations
Compare the display’s supported formats with the streamer’s published list and with the title’s actual HDR version. SHIELD’s listed options are Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10; Apple’s are Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. A title can still play in SDR or another HDR format when the display, cable path or source does not provide a matching mode.
The AVR reports Atmos but the result is not lossless
Inspect the incoming codec, not only the word “Atmos.” Dolby Digital Plus Atmos and Dolby TrueHD Atmos both carry Atmos objects, but only the latter is the lossless Blu-ray-style form discussed here. The receiver’s information panel should identify Dolby TrueHD when a remux is being passed through unchanged.

Choose NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro when
- Your must-have files are Blu-ray or UHD Blu-ray remuxes with Dolby TrueHD Atmos.
- You use Plex or another local-media player and want direct HDMI passthrough.
- Your AVR or soundbar decodes Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD and DTS:X.
