To see a song’s metadata in Apple Music, open its information window rather than relying on the compact list view. On a Mac, select the track in Songs and choose Song > Get Info, or press Command-I. In the current Apple Music app for Windows, select the track, open its More menu, and choose Properties > Details. Those windows can contain the title, artist, album, composer, year, track number, lyrics, artwork, playback settings, sorting values and technical file data such as duration, bit rate and sample rate. The exact fields depend on the metadata attached to that particular item.
How do I see a song’s details in Apple Music on a Mac?
Use the Music app’s Get Info window. This is the quickest way to inspect a track’s composer, album information, duration and other available metadata.
- Open the Music app.
- Choose Songs in the sidebar so the individual tracks in your library are listed.
- Click the song you want to inspect. Select one track; opening an album view alone does not open the track information panel.
- From the macOS menu bar, choose Song > Get Info. You can also press Command-I with the track selected.
- Move through the tabs in the information window to see the fields available for that item.
The shortcut applies to the selected song, so click the correct row before pressing Command-I. If several tracks are selected, Music may show a combined editing or information view instead of the single-song fields you expected.
What the Mac information window contains
The tabs are organized by type of information. A downloaded or imported file can expose more technical fields than a cloud-only catalog entry, and an item with no supplied lyrics will not have lyrics to display. Treat the window as a view of the metadata Music actually has, not as a guarantee that every possible field exists.

How do I see a song’s details in Apple Music on Windows?
In the current Apple Music app for Windows, the equivalent command is called Properties, not Get Info. Open the selected song’s More menu and then its Details view.
- Launch the Apple Music app.
- Choose Songs in the sidebar.
- Find the track and select its More button.
- Choose Properties, then open Details.
- Review the tabs and fields shown for that library item.
Apple describes the Properties window as the place where information about each item in your music library is stored. The labels and layout are therefore different from the Mac route even though the purpose is similar.
If you still use iTunes on Windows
Some Windows computers still have an older iTunes installation rather than the Apple Music app. Depending on the iTunes version, the command may be labeled Get Info, Song Info or Properties. Use the item’s information command in that version, but do not expect its wording or tab arrangement to match the current Apple Music instructions above.

What song information can Apple Music show?
The available fields depend on the item’s metadata. A purchased or catalog track, a CD import and a file added from another application can carry different information, so two recordings that look alike in a playlist may expose different tabs or blank fields.
Details: identity and credits
The Details area can include the track title, artist, album, album artist, composer and genre. It may also show the year, track number, disc number and play count. These fields answer common questions such as who is credited as the composer, which disc a track belongs to and how Music sorts the recording within an album.
A missing genre or composer does not mean the recording has no genre or writer; it means that value was not supplied in the metadata for that item. Imported files often depend on the tags embedded in the file, while catalog entries depend on the information associated with that catalog record.

Artwork: cover image and imported-file editing
The Artwork tab displays the cover image currently associated with the item. For eligible imported tracks, Music can provide controls to change that image. Availability varies by item, so a streaming catalog entry may not offer the same editing controls as a file in your own library.
If you replace artwork, make sure the selected row is the intended recording. A compilation track and an album track can have similar titles but different artwork assignments.
Lyrics: supplied words for the item
The Lyrics tab shows lyrics when they are included with that item. It can be absent or empty when no lyrics were supplied, when the selected version is instrumental or when the metadata for an imported file does not contain lyrics.
Options: playback behavior
Options contains playback-related settings when the item supports them. Examples include a custom start time, end time, volume adjustment and equalizer choice. These controls affect how Music plays the item; they are not a replacement for editing the audio file itself.
A start or end value can make a song appear shorter during playback even though the file’s actual duration remains unchanged. Check the File tab when you need the technical length of the stored audio.

Sorting values let Music use alternate text for title, album, album artist, artist or composer. This is useful when you want a particular ordering without changing the visible name shown in the library. For example, a sort-as value can place an artist under a chosen spelling while the normal Artist field remains unchanged.

File: technical properties
The File tab can show the file type, duration, file size, bit rate and sample rate. These values describe the audio item available to your library, so they may be missing or limited for a cloud catalog entry that has not been downloaded.
Duration in this tab is the stored file’s length. If Options contains a custom end time, compare both values to understand why playback stops before the technical duration.
Why are some fields missing or different between songs?
Apple Music does not create a complete, universal metadata record for every track. The fields shown depend on what was delivered with the selected item and on where that item came from.

Apple’s catalog is separate from an individual user’s personal library. A personal library can contain catalog items, iTunes Store purchases and tracks imported from discs or other applications. Each source can provide a different set of title, credit, artwork, lyric and technical values.
For example, a CD import may have a file size, bit rate and sample rate that a non-downloaded catalog item cannot expose locally. Conversely, a catalog record may include supplied lyrics or standardized credits that were never written into an imported file’s tags.
Album release year versus a complete release date
The Details area may include a year field, but it does not promise a full day-and-month release date. If you need an exact release date, check whether the item’s metadata includes one; otherwise, Apple Music may only provide the year associated with that recording or album.

Different versions of the same song
Remasters, clean edits, live recordings and deluxe-edition tracks can have separate metadata even when their titles are nearly identical. Select the exact row you intend to examine and verify the album, artist and duration before treating the displayed credits as belonging to another version.

What is the difference between the Mac and Windows workflows?
The two apps expose similar kinds of information, but the command names and navigation are not interchangeable. Use this comparison when instructions written for one platform do not seem to match your screen.

Do not assume that a field visible on one platform must appear on the other. The apps can be looking at the same library while presenting different controls, and the selected item may not be stored locally in the same way.
Can I edit metadata without renaming a Windows file?
Opening Properties to read information does not itself rename a file. The filename warning matters when you save metadata changes in the Windows app.
Apple Music for Windows can change the file name on disk when an item’s information is edited. If you want to change tags without having Music reorganize filenames, use the sidebar actions button, choose Settings > Files, and turn off Keep Media folder organized before editing.

- Choose Settings.
- Open Files.
- Turn off Keep Media folder organized.
- Return to the song’s More > Properties > Details view and make only the metadata changes you intend to keep.
Disabling organization prevents automatic filename changes, but it does not create a backup or undo an edit. Keep a copy of important imported files before making broad changes to titles, artists or album fields.

How do I find a writer, exact duration or release information?
Start with the selected track’s information window and match each question to the field that can answer it.
- Writer or composer: Open Details and look for Composer. If it is blank, that credit is not present for the selected item.
- Exact technical duration: Open File and read Duration. Compare it with any start or end limits in Options.
- Album or recording year: Check the Year field in Details. A year is not the same as a guaranteed full release date.
- Track placement: Check Track and Disc numbers in Details to distinguish a standard album sequence from a multi-disc or bonus-edition sequence.
- Playback count: Look for Play Count in Details, when that field is available for the item.
When a field is absent, first confirm that you selected the intended version. If the correct row is selected and the field is still missing, Apple Music has no value to display for that item in the current library record.
What should I do if Get Info or Properties is unavailable?
Most failures come from selecting the wrong view, using instructions for the other platform or working with an item that is not represented as an individual track.
Mac checks
- Switch to Songs in the sidebar rather than an album, artist or playlist-only view.
- Click the track once so it is visibly selected, then use Song > Get Info.
- If Command-I does nothing, use the menu command to confirm that Music has focus and that the row is selected.
- For a multi-selection, clear the selection and reopen the information window for one song.
Windows checks
- Confirm that you are using the Apple Music app, not an older iTunes guide or a different media player.
- Open the track’s More button; the Properties command is attached to the item row.
- Choose Properties first, then Details; looking only for a Mac-style Get Info command will not find it.
- If technical fields are limited, check whether the item is downloaded or is only a catalog entry in your library.
When the panel opens but values look wrong
- Compare the title, album and artist in the window with the row you selected; similarly named versions are common.
- Check whether the track is an import, purchase or catalog item, since each source can carry different metadata.
- Use the File tab for stored-file measurements and the Options tab for playback limits; do not interpret an end-time setting as a changed audio file duration.
Can I inspect details without changing anything?
Yes. Selecting a song and opening Get Info on Mac or Properties on Windows is a read-only inspection until you edit a field and save a change. Simply viewing the tabs does not alter the title, filename, artwork or playback settings.
Be careful with controls that look like ordinary text fields: clicking into a field is harmless, but typing and confirming a new value is an edit. On Windows, review the media-folder organization setting before saving any metadata change if preserving existing filenames matters.
A quick checklist for complete song metadata
- Identify the platform: Mac Music, Apple Music for Windows or legacy iTunes.
- Open the library’s Songs view.
- Select the exact recording, including the correct album or edition.
- Open Song > Get Info or Command-I on Mac, or More > Properties > Details on Windows.
- Check Details for credits, year, track and disc numbers.
- Check File for duration and audio specifications when available.
- Check Artwork, Lyrics, Options and Sorting for the other fields supplied with the item.
- If editing on Windows, review Settings > Files > Keep Media folder organized before saving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apple Music show the original release date of every song?
Not necessarily. The information window may provide only a year, and a complete day-and-month date is not guaranteed for every recording. Treat the displayed value as the metadata attached to that specific item.
Why do two copies of the same track have different composers or artwork?
They may come from different sources, such as a catalog entry, a purchase or an imported file. Remasters, live versions and deluxe editions can also carry separate metadata records even when their titles are nearly identical.

No. Opening the window and reading its tabs is an inspection action. Changes occur only if you edit a field and save it; on Windows, saved edits can rename the underlying file when media-folder organization is enabled.
Where can I find the audio bitrate and sample rate?
Open the selected item’s information window and use the File section when it is available. Catalog items that are not stored locally may expose fewer technical fields than downloaded or imported files.
