Apple Music Sing usually fails for one of four reasons: the device or software is unsupported, the wrong Apple Account is signed in, the song does not include Sing-ready synchronized lyrics, or the feature is unavailable in your country or region. Check compatibility first, then open a catalog song’s Lyrics view and test another track. On supported hardware, the Mic button appears beside the lyrics and lets you lower or raise the original vocal.
The troubleshooting order below separates device-wide problems from song-specific ones, so you can identify the cause without replacing hardware unnecessarily.
Why is Apple Music Sing not working?
Start by deciding whether the problem affects every song or only one. If the Mic button is absent everywhere, verify the device, operating system, Apple Account and regional availability. If Lyrics open normally but Mic is missing for one track, that track may simply lack Sing support.
Recommended Free Tools
- No Lyrics button: the track may not be from the Apple Music catalog, or lyrics are unavailable for that asset.
- Lyrics appear but no Mic button: the song may not support Sing, even on compatible hardware.
- Mic appears but the slider does nothing: check that you are dragging the vocal slider in the Lyrics view and test another supported song.
- Apple TV microphone will not connect: the iPhone-as-microphone feature requires Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later) and is separate from the on-screen vocal slider.
Does your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV support Apple Music Sing?
Sing is limited to specific generations. A current operating system cannot add the feature to older hardware, so compare your model with the minimums before changing settings.

| Device | Minimum model for Sing | Software and account requirement |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (3rd generation) | Current iOS; Apple’s iPhone guide specifies iOS 16.2 or later, with the stated exception for iPhone SE (2nd generation) |
| iPad | iPad (9th generation or later); iPad mini (6th generation or later); iPad Air (4th generation or later); iPad Pro (5th generation or later) | Current iPadOS and the Apple Account used for the Apple Music subscription |
| Apple TV | Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later) | Current tvOS and the Apple Account used for the Apple Music subscription |
The iPhone SE (2nd generation) is not an alternative to the third-generation model: Apple’s Sing compatibility list starts at the SE (3rd generation), while the user guide’s iOS requirement specifically excludes the second-generation SE.
Which software version does Apple Music Sing need?
Install the latest available iOS, iPadOS or tvOS for your supported model. For iPhone, Apple documents iOS 16.2 or later for Sing, except iPhone SE (2nd generation), which is not supported by the hardware list anyway.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, choose General, then Software Update.
- Install any available update and allow the device to restart.
- On Apple TV, open Settings, choose System, then Software Updates and select Update Software.
- Reopen Apple Music and test a catalog song after the update completes.
If the device is below the supported generation, updating cannot expose the Mic control. An iPhone 10 or an iPad model below the listed generations therefore needs a supported device for Sing rather than a software tweak.

Are you using the Apple Account tied to your Apple Music subscription?
The device must be signed in with the Apple Account that owns or provides the Apple Music subscription. A different account can leave Apple Music playable while withholding subscription features and catalog entitlements.
- Open Settings and check the Apple Account shown at the top.
- Open Media & Purchases and confirm that the account matches the one used for Apple Music.
- In Apple Music, verify that the subscription is active under the same account.
- Close and reopen Apple Music, then test a song from the Apple Music catalog.
Do not use a locally stored audio file as your first test. Sing controls are attached to Apple’s catalog song assets, so a catalog track with synchronized lyrics gives you a clearer result.

Where is the Apple Music Sing Mic button?
The control is inside the Lyrics screen, not in the general Apple Music settings. Use this path on a supported iPhone or iPad:
- Play a song from the Apple Music catalog.
- Tap the player to open Now Playing.
- Tap the Lyrics button.
- Tap the Mic button.
- Drag the vocal slider down to reduce the original singer or up to bring the vocal back.
The slider changes the lead-vocal level; it is not a device microphone-volume control. If Mic is not shown after Lyrics opens, continue with the song-specific checks rather than searching the Settings app for another switch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy does the Mic button disappear for only some songs?
Apple says that even on a supported device, “If you’re using a supported device and don’t see the Mic button, Apple Music Sing might not be available for that song.” Sing is therefore both device-dependent and track-dependent.
Try a second catalog song
Choose another well-known Apple Music catalog track with synchronized lyrics. If Mic appears there, your device and account are working; the first song lacks the required Sing asset or lyric synchronization.
Check that lyrics actually synchronize
Plain, unsynchronized lyrics do not provide the beat-by-beat display that Sing uses. A Lyrics page that shows text without timed highlighting is a strong indication that the necessary lyric data is not available for that version of the track.

Check alternate catalog versions
Albums, live recordings, remixes and regional releases can be separate catalog assets. One version may have synchronized lyrics and vocal controls while another does not, so select a different version of the same song when available.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why won’t Apple Music lyrics sync for karaoke?
Beat-by-beat lyrics depend on timed lyric files supplied for each catalog asset. Apple’s Music Partner documentation tells providers that songs considered for beat-by-beat lyrics should follow its updated TTML file format. When that data has not been delivered or approved for a track, the listener cannot create synchronization with a setting on the device.
For listeners, the practical test is simple: use several catalog songs known to show scrolling, line-synchronized lyrics. If only one recording fails, report that specific lyrics issue through Apple’s feedback route and identify the song, artist, album or version. If many current catalog tracks fail, move on to account, software and regional checks.
Could your country or region be blocking Apple Music Sing?
Apple states that Apple Music availability can vary by country or region. The catalog, lyrics and Sing controls may therefore differ between accounts in different locations even when the hardware is identical.
- Confirm that the Apple Account’s country or region is the one you currently use.
- Test several catalog songs rather than relying on one title.
- Ask another user in the same region to check a known Sing-enabled song, if possible.
- If the feature is absent across multiple compatible devices and catalog tracks, contact Apple Support or submit a lyrics concern instead of repeatedly reinstalling the app.
Changing regions solely to obtain Sing can affect catalog access and subscriptions, so treat regional settings as an account decision rather than a quick troubleshooting toggle.

How do I use Apple Music Sing on Apple TV?
On Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later), play a catalog song, open its Lyrics view and use the remote’s Mic control to adjust the vocal level. This on-screen slider works independently of the iPhone microphone feature.
Using an iPhone as the Apple TV microphone
Apple also supports using an iPhone as a microphone with Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later). That is a separate setup for singing input; it does not make the Mic button appear on an unsupported song or turn an older Apple TV into a compatible model.
First verify the Apple TV generation and current tvOS, then ensure the iPhone and Apple TV are using the expected Apple Account and are available for the pairing flow shown on the Apple TV. If the vocal slider works but the iPhone microphone does not, troubleshoot the microphone pairing separately rather than changing song lyrics settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does enabling Sing turn off Dolby Atmos?
On iPhone, Apple Music Sing disables Dolby Atmos for the song while Sing is active. This is expected behavior, not an audio failure: turning Sing off restores Dolby Atmos playback for that song.
If you are comparing sound before and after moving the vocal slider, make the comparison with Sing fully disabled so Atmos is available again. The change applies to the playback mode of that song, not to a permanent alteration of your library.

Should you replace or upgrade your device?
Upgrade only when the model itself is outside Apple’s compatibility list. A newer operating system fixes software-version gaps on supported hardware, but it cannot add Sing to an iPhone below the iPhone 11 generation, an iPhone SE below the third generation, an older listed iPad class, or an Apple TV below the third-generation 4K model.
| Current situation | Most sensible next action |
|---|---|
| Supported model, outdated operating system | Update iOS, iPadOS or tvOS, then retest a catalog song. |
| Supported model, wrong Apple Account | Sign in with the account used for the Apple Music subscription. |
| Supported model and account, Mic missing on one track | Use another catalog version or song with synchronized lyrics. |
| Supported model, Mic absent on many tracks in one region | Check regional availability and report the lyrics concern. |
| Unsupported model | Use a compatible device if Sing is essential; no setting can bypass the hardware requirement. |
What should you do when none of the fixes works?
Run one controlled test instead of changing several variables at once:
- Use a device from the supported model list with current software.
- Confirm the Apple Account that carries the Apple Music subscription.
- Play a catalog song that displays synchronized lyrics.
- Open Now Playing, choose Lyrics, and look for Mic.
- Repeat with a second catalog song.
- Record whether the failure is device-wide, song-specific or region-wide before contacting Apple.
This record gives support enough detail to distinguish an account entitlement problem from missing lyric assets. Include the exact device generation, operating-system version, song and album version, and country or region when reporting the issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
How common is Apple Music Sing failure?
Apple has not published an independent failure-rate statistic for Sing. A missing control is usually explained by compatibility, account entitlement, song assets or regional availability rather than a universal outage rate.
Can I force Sing onto a song that has no Mic button?
No. The Mic control is supplied per catalog song, so a device setting cannot add it when Apple has not enabled Sing for that recording. Use another version or track to confirm that the feature itself works.
What do music providers need to supply for beat-by-beat lyrics?
Apple’s Music Partner guidance says tracks considered for beat-by-beat lyrics should use the updated TTML file format. Listeners cannot repair missing timing data locally; the provider must deliver the appropriate lyric asset.
Does the Apple TV microphone feature replace the Sing vocal slider?
No. The slider changes the recorded singer’s level in the playback screen, while an iPhone can serve as a microphone for Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later). They are separate capabilities with separate compatibility checks.
