Choose the ecosystem your household already uses. Pick a HomePod mini or compatible Apple TV if your home runs on iPhone and Apple Home. Choose Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) for a compact touchscreen with Matter and Thread support. Choose Amazon Echo Show 8 for the best balance of screen size and smart-home radios, or Echo Show 15 if a large wall-mounted Fire TV and household dashboard are your priority.
These are not equivalent products: Apple’s documented options are screenless home hubs, while Google and Amazon sell smart displays. That difference affects recipes, calendars, video calls, entertainment and everyday control as much as the underlying smart-home compatibility.
Quick comparison
| Option | Best for | Display | Smart-home connectivity documented by the manufacturer | Camera |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple HomePod mini | Apple Home and iPhone households; remote control and automations | None; audio-only | Apple Home hub; Thread-capable for Matter when used as the required hub | None |
| Compatible Apple TV 4K | Apple households that also want television streaming | Uses the connected television; no built-in touchscreen | Apple Home hub; Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet is a documented Thread-capable hub | None |
| Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) | Google Home users wanting a small touchscreen and ambient display | 7 inches, 1024 × 600 | Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread; built-in Thread border router | None listed in Google’s specifications |
| Amazon Echo Show 8 | Alexa households wanting a balanced display and broad radio support | 8-inch HD | Built-in hub for Zigbee, Matter and Thread | Model-dependent; verify the generation before buying |
| Amazon Echo Show 15 | Large wall dashboard, recipes and Fire TV | 15.6-inch Full HD | Integrated smart-home hub; Wi-Fi 6E | Yes |
| Amazon Echo Show 10 | Large moving display and video calls | 10.1-inch HD | Echo smart-home platform; exact radio support depends on model | 13 MP auto-framing camera |
| Amazon Echo Show 5 | Compact bedside or desk display | 5.5 inches | Echo smart-home platform; exact radio support depends on model | 2 MP |
Radio and Matter features can vary by exact generation and region. Treat the model name and the manufacturer’s specification page as part of the purchase decision, not as interchangeable labels.
What a home hub actually does
Apple describes a home hub as the device that lets you control accessories while away from home, share control with other people and run automations on schedule or in response to events. In Apple Home, a HomePod or HomePod mini becomes a hub automatically after setup. An Apple TV becomes one after you add it to a room in the Home app.

Apple also requires a home hub to add Matter accessories to Apple Home. Thread-based Matter accessories need a Thread-capable hub, such as HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet. A regular Apple TV model without the required Thread hardware should not be assumed to provide that function.
Google and Amazon combine controller functions with a visible display. Google says Matter devices can communicate locally over the home network instead of sending every command through cloud services. Local communication can improve responsiveness and resilience, but it does not remove the need for a compatible controller, network and supported device type.
Apple Home: best when your household is already Apple-first
What you get
HomePod mini is a small, audio-only speaker that quietly serves as an Apple Home hub. Apple TV adds the same home-control role while serving as a television streamer. Neither product is a touchscreen smart display in the documented Apple lineup, so you will not get an on-device calendar, recipe panel or video-call screen comparable to Nest Hub or Echo Show.

Matter and Thread requirements
For Matter in Apple Home, install a home hub first. If the accessory uses Thread, use a Thread-enabled hub: Apple specifically identifies HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as examples. This distinction matters when a Matter product works over Wi-Fi but fails during setup because the household lacks Thread infrastructure.
When Apple is the right choice
- Your primary phone and tablet platform is iPhone, and most household members already use Apple Home.
- You want Apple’s sharing and automation model rather than adding another assistant ecosystem.
- You prefer a screenless, less visually intrusive hub in a room, or already own an Apple TV.
- You are prepared to buy the specific Thread-capable model required by a Thread Matter accessory.
What Apple does not provide here
Do not buy a HomePod mini expecting a visual dashboard. Apple’s documented hubs in this comparison provide audio and home-control functions, not a built-in touchscreen. If a screen is central to your use case, Google or Amazon is the more direct fit.
Google Nest Hub (2nd gen): the compact Google Home touchscreen
Hardware
Google lists a 7-inch touchscreen with 1024 × 600 resolution. The specification includes two far-field microphones, Voice Match, ultrasound sensing, an ambient-EQ light sensor, capacitive touch controls, a 1.7-inch full-range driver and a 15 W adapter. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, Google Cast and a 2.4 GHz 802.15.4 radio.
The display is large enough for controls, timers, weather, recipes and ambient photos without dominating a bedside table or kitchen counter. Its compact size is less suitable when several people need to read a dashboard from across a room.

Google identifies Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max as hubs supporting Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread, with built-in Thread border-router capability. That makes Nest Hub (2nd gen) a controller and network component for supported Matter devices, not merely a screen that relays commands to another hub.

Google also states that Matter-certified apps, including Google Home, Apple Home and Amazon Alexa, can control Matter devices across platforms, subject to the device type and each ecosystem’s support. “Matter-compatible” therefore does not guarantee that every feature or accessory will appear identically in all three apps.
Camera and privacy profile
Google’s listed Nest Hub (2nd gen) specifications include microphones and sensors but no camera. That makes it the clearest choice of these displays for a room where you want a screen and voice control without a camera. Microphones remain active for voice features, so use the device’s physical controls and account settings to manage listening preferences.
Amazon Echo Show: the broadest range of screen sizes
Echo Show 8: the balanced Alexa option
Amazon describes Echo Show 8 as an 8-inch HD display with room-filling spatial audio, two 2-inch stereo speakers and a passive bass radiator. Its built-in smart-home hub supports Zigbee, Matter and Thread, giving it the strongest documented combination of common smart-home radios among the three headline choices.
Choose it when you want a visible control panel, Alexa services and broad device connectivity without committing wall space to a 15.6-inch screen. Check the exact generation before purchase because camera and other features are model-specific.
Echo Show 15: a wall-mounted household dashboard
Echo Show 15 has a 15.6-inch Full HD display, Alexa and Fire TV built in, an integrated smart-home hub, Wi-Fi 6E, a camera and wall-mounting equipment. Its size suits shared calendars, recipes, widgets and television viewing from a kitchen or family room. It is overkill for a nightstand and requires planning for wall placement, power and viewing angle.
Echo Show 10 and Echo Show 5
Echo Show 10 uses a 10.1-inch HD screen and a 13 MP auto-framing camera. The camera and moving-display design are useful for video calls and following a person around a room, but they add privacy and placement considerations.
Echo Show 5 is a 5.5-inch compact display with a 2 MP camera. It fits a desk or bedside table, but its smaller screen is less comfortable for multi-person dashboards and detailed recipes.

Amazon also describes Echo Hub as a wall-mountable control panel with customizable dashboards and a built-in hub for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, Sidewalk and Thread. It is designed primarily for dedicated smart-home control rather than serving as a general entertainment display. Consider it when a permanent control panel matters more than Fire TV, music-focused speakers or a flexible countertop device.

- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
Matter, Thread and Zigbee: what the labels mean in practice
Matter is a common control standard, not a guarantee of identical features
Matter allows a certified accessory to communicate with compatible ecosystems such as Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa. Google’s guidance emphasizes local home-network communication, which can reduce dependence on a remote cloud path for supported commands. You still need an ecosystem controller, a suitable network and a supported device category.
Thread is the network underneath some Matter products
Thread is a low-power mesh network used by some Matter accessories. A Thread Matter light, sensor or lock needs a Thread border router in the home. Google’s Nest Hub (2nd gen) includes one; Apple requires a Thread-capable hub such as HomePod mini or the specified Apple TV 4K configuration. Amazon documents Thread support in Echo Show 8 and Echo Hub.
Zigbee remains relevant in Alexa households
Echo Show 8’s documented Zigbee support can connect compatible accessories directly through its built-in hub. That is useful if your existing devices use Zigbee rather than Matter. Neither the Apple Home documentation cited here nor the Google Nest Hub documentation lists Zigbee support for the compared hub.

How to choose without buying the wrong hub
- List your household’s controlling phones. If everyone uses iPhone, Apple Home reduces account and app switching. If the household is centered on Google services or Alexa, start there.
- Inventory existing accessories. Record whether each lock, light, sensor or thermostat uses Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, Zigbee or another protocol. A “Matter” logo alone does not tell you whether Thread hardware is required.
- Decide whether a screen is essential. Choose Apple only if screenless control is acceptable. Choose Nest Hub for a compact display, Echo Show 8 for a balanced display, or Echo Show 15 for a large dashboard.
- Check the exact model and generation. Verify Thread, Zigbee, camera, Wi-Fi and mounting claims for the precise product. Do not transfer Echo Show 8 features to Echo Show 5 or assume every Apple TV revision is Thread-capable.
- Plan the room and network. Place a Thread-capable hub where it can reach the mesh, provide reliable Wi-Fi, and position a display where people can read it. For a wall-mounted model, plan power and mounting before purchase.
- Set up the controller before accessories. Finish the manufacturer’s app setup, assign the hub or display to a room, update firmware and then add Matter, Thread or Zigbee accessories. This avoids troubleshooting an accessory when the missing component is the controller.
Common setup problems and fixes
A Matter accessory will not add to Apple Home
Confirm that an Apple home hub is configured. If the accessory is Thread-based, confirm that the hub is a Thread-capable HomePod mini or the specified Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet model. A screenless hub can still be working correctly; the absence of a display is not an installation error.
The accessory appears in one ecosystem but not another
Check that the accessory’s Matter device type is supported by both ecosystems and that you are using the manufacturer’s current pairing procedure. Matter enables cross-platform control, but Google explicitly qualifies that support by device type and ecosystem.
Voice commands work only when the internet is available
Local Matter communication does not mean every assistant feature is local. Cloud-dependent account services, media requests and some integrations can still require internet access. Test the specific light, lock or sensor command rather than assuming the whole assistant is offline-capable.
A display is uncomfortable to use
Move a small display closer or reserve it for timers and glanceable information. If several people need to read calendars and recipes, use a larger screen such as Echo Show 15 and account for its wall placement. A larger panel is not automatically better for a private bedside setting.
Privacy and camera trade-offs
Nest Hub (2nd gen) lists microphones and sensors but no camera. HomePod mini and Apple TV are audio-only in this comparison. Echo Show 5, Echo Show 10 and Echo Show 15 include cameras as documented by Amazon; Echo Show 10 adds a 13 MP auto-framing camera, while Echo Show 5 has a 2 MP camera. Echo Show 8 camera details depend on the generation.

Choose a camera-free device for bedrooms or other spaces where video capture is unacceptable, and choose camera-equipped models only when video calling or visual presence features justify the additional privacy controls. Review microphone and camera controls during setup and explain them to everyone who shares the home.
Final decision
For an iPhone-centered Apple Home, buy HomePod mini or a compatible Apple TV and accept that the hub itself has no touchscreen. For a compact Google touchscreen with a documented Matter controller and Thread border router, choose Nest Hub (2nd gen). For Alexa households that want Zigbee, Matter and Thread in one balanced display, choose Echo Show 8. Choose Echo Show 15 when a large wall-mounted Fire TV dashboard is the main requirement. Matter makes cooperation between ecosystems more practical, but the exact model, radio, device type and hub requirement still determine whether a particular accessory will work.
