API testing checks whether an API behaves as expected; API monitoring checks whether a deployed API remains healthy for its consumers over time. Testing is commonly used during development and release work to catch defects and regressions. Monitoring repeatedly checks live services, records operational results such as availability and latency, and can alert a team when something goes wrong. They are different primary purposes, not mutually exclusive techniques: the same scripted check can be used in a release pipeline or run on a schedule against production.

What API testing is for

API testing evaluates requests, responses, contracts, or workflows against defined expectations. The purpose is to establish whether behavior is correct, including when a request is invalid or a change risks breaking an existing interaction. Teams commonly run tests while developing and releasing software, though checks can also run against deployed services.

  • Endpoint behavior: confirm that a request returns the expected status and fields, and that invalid parameters produce the expected error.
  • Contract expectations: verify that the interactions a consumer relies on continue to work with a provider.
  • Workflow behavior: test a chain of API calls that represents a larger transaction or user journey.

Postman describes API testing across the development lifecycle, including checks that help identify issues before changes ship: Postman’s API testing guide.

What API monitoring is for

API monitoring repeatedly checks deployed services to assess their health from the perspective of a request or scripted transaction. Depending on the setup, it can track availability, errors, response latency, and trends over time, then alert people responsible for responding.

A synthetic monitor runs simulated requests or a script at intervals and records what those executions observe. For example, a check might call an endpoint, validate its response, record latency, and notify a team after failures. Google Cloud documents synthetic monitors as periodically executed scripts with recorded results and latency and alert-policy integration: Google Cloud’s synthetic monitoring overview. Postman also describes monitoring dashboards, alerts, regional runs, retries, deployment-triggered runs, and forwarding performance data to observability tools: Postman’s API monitoring guide.

API testing vs. API monitoring at a glance

Aspect API testing API monitoring
Main question Does the API behave correctly against expectations? Is the deployed service healthy for consumers over time?
Typical scope An endpoint, a contract, invalid-input handling, or a multi-step workflow. Availability, errors, latency, and optionally a scripted endpoint or workflow check.
Common execution points Development, local or CI runs, and release checks. Scheduled checks against deployed services, alongside operational telemetry.
Typical response A test result that helps a developer or release process find a defect or regression. Historical results, dashboards, and alerts that support operational response.
Evidence and context Pass/fail details and whether specific assertions or expectations hold. Repeated results and latency from the monitor’s execution context; broader telemetry may be needed to diagnose causes or understand real traffic.

The distinction is the primary job and operating context, rather than a hard line between tools. A test script can be used as a monitor, and a monitor can be run on demand as part of release work.

Where the practices overlap

Tests can run against production

A scheduled synthetic check can reuse test assertions to validate a production endpoint or transaction. It becomes monitoring when it repeatedly observes the deployed service and supports ongoing detection and response. A scripted result describes what that check saw from its execution context; it does not, by itself, represent every user request or explain the underlying cause of a failure.

Monitors can be release checks

A deployment pipeline can trigger a monitor run so the team can catch a release issue promptly. In that use, monitoring capability serves as a release gate. The same check can also run on a recurring schedule for continued visibility after deployment.

Synthetic checks complement wider observability

Synthetic requests show whether a planned request or transaction succeeds from a particular check context. They do not replace infrastructure and application telemetry needed to diagnose causes or understand live traffic. Postman recommends monitoring supporting infrastructure and correlating API-monitor data with other observability data.

Examples: which one is it?

  • Testing: a developer checks that a GET endpoint returns expected fields and that invalid parameters return the expected error.
  • Integration contract testing: consumer and provider checks verify that concrete request/response interactions relied on by a consumer continue to work.
  • Synthetic API monitoring: a scheduled script calls a production API, validates a response or multi-step transaction, records latency, and alerts after failures.
  • Release check using monitoring: a deployment pipeline triggers a monitor run to detect a release issue immediately.

  • Question and scope: Are you trying to prevent a regression in one endpoint or contract, validate a consumer workflow, or detect degradation across a deployed service?
  • Timing and cadence: Should a check run locally, in CI, at deployment, on a schedule, or continuously as part of live telemetry?
  • Validation depth: Do you need status and response-content assertions, schema or contract checks, business-workflow validation, or latency thresholds?
  • Evidence and response path: Do you need test details for a release decision, historical trends and a dashboard, an alert to an on-call team, or correlation with logs, metrics, and traces?
  • Operational impact: Consider induced request load, service costs, access to private endpoints, data regionality, and the upkeep of scripts and test data.

More frequent synthetic checks can shorten detection time, but each execution adds load and may affect cost. Set cadence and alert policy according to service objectives and the time a failure can remain undetected; a fast schedule is not automatically the right schedule.

Examples of monitoring behavior and limits

Alert timing depends on the configured cadence

Google Cloud’s documentation gives an example configuration that notifies after two or more consecutive failed runs. At a five-minute interval, those two failed runs can take ten minutes to occur. This is an example of that documented Google Cloud setup, not a universal alert rule or guaranteed detection time. See Google Cloud’s synthetic-monitor documentation for configuration details.

Regional execution does not guarantee data residency

Google Cloud says a synthetic monitor’s Cloud Run function can be deployed in a selected region, while invocation may originate from any region supported by uptime-check servers; that behavior is not configurable. The service does not guarantee that uptime-check request data stays in a particular geographic location. Google cautions against using these features where Assured Workloads or Impact Level 4 data-residency requirements apply. Check current service documentation and your compliance requirements before relying on a specific deployment region.

Product-specific API support varies

Splunk’s documented synthetic API tests can check endpoint availability and performance, validate returned data, exercise transactions with variables, and alert based on request or response content. Splunk officially supports REST APIs; its documentation says SOAP interactions over HTTP/S may work, but SOAP is not officially supported. That limitation applies to Splunk’s documented product, not API testing tools generally: Splunk’s API-test documentation.

What “contract testing” means

Contract testing is used to describe more than one kind of check, so it helps to state which meaning is intended. Pact documents consumer-driven integration contract testing: automated consumer tests generate concrete request/response examples, and the provider is checked against those interactions. This tests the expectations represented by those consumer interactions.

That is different from checking only whether provider behavior matches a static specification such as an OpenAPI document. Such a check can help keep implementation aligned with documentation, but by itself it does not establish that consumers call the provider correctly or that every consumer’s expectations are covered. See the Pact introduction for its explanation of contract-testing terminology.

How to use both in a practical workflow

  1. Define expected behavior. Write endpoint, error-handling, contract, or workflow assertions that reflect the behavior the API must preserve.
  2. Run tests during development and release work. Use failures to catch defects and regressions before or as changes ship.
  3. Choose a small set of useful production checks. Reuse safe, representative assertions for critical endpoints or transactions; avoid scripts that create unwanted side effects.
  4. Set cadence and alert policy against service objectives. Balance detection time against request load, cost, and the consequences of false or noisy alerts.
  5. Connect alerts to an operational response. Retain monitor results and correlate them with wider application or infrastructure telemetry when investigating failures.
