Those are specifications, not proof of performance. CHOICE lists laboratory categories for the model, but the accessible page marks the actual results as member-only. This review therefore separates what the manual and product record establish from what remains unverified.

How the controls work
Variable browning
The ST-484 uses a variable browning control rather than a single fixed heat setting. The Kmart manual identifies three reference positions: 1 for light, 4 for medium and 7 for dark. These labels are useful starting points, not guaranteed shades. Bread thickness, sugar content, moisture and whether the bread is frozen all change the result.
For a new loaf, begin near the medium reference and adjust one step at a time. Changing several steps at once makes it difficult to learn how the toaster behaves with your bread. Keep a note of the setting that works for a particular loaf if different household members want repeatable results.
Lift & Check
The lever includes a documented “Lift & Check” function. It lets you raise the bread during a cycle to inspect its colour, then lower it to continue. That is useful when trying a new bread or a darker setting because you can check progress without cancelling immediately.
Lift-and-check is an inspection feature, not evidence that the toaster browns evenly. The lever can show the visible side of a slice, but it does not measure colour variation across a batch or between cycles.

Cancel
Pressing CANCEL stops the active cycle. Use it when the bread reaches the colour you want, when a slice is inserted incorrectly, or when you need to stop operation rather than waiting for the timer. After cancelling, remove the toast carefully and allow the appliance to cool normally.
Reheat
REHEAT is intended for toast that has already been cooked and needs warming. It is different from selecting a new browning cycle: the purpose is to warm without deliberately adding the same level of browning. The manual documents the button, but the accessible information does not state a fixed reheat duration or temperature.
Defrost
DEFROST is provided for frozen bread. Frozen slices generally need a different cycle from room-temperature bread, so use the dedicated function rather than assuming the normal browning setting will behave identically. The manual confirms the function but does not publish a universal time that applies to every bread type.
Crumb tray
The removable crumb tray is a practical maintenance feature. Empty it regularly, with the toaster unplugged and cool, so crumbs do not accumulate beneath the heating area. Slide the tray out over a bin, dispose of the crumbs and replace it fully before using the toaster again.
Can it toast four slices with different settings?
The four-slot layout is clearly intended for four slices in one cycle. It is also built around two toaster sections, which may be useful when people want different levels of browning. However, the supplied manual information does not establish that each section has fully independent controls or that four slices can run simultaneously at two separately selected settings.

Do not assume independent operation from the slot count alone. Before buying for a household with conflicting preferences, inspect the physical control layout or ask the retailer whether the two sections can be set independently. If the controls are shared, all slices in that cycle will follow the same selection; if each section has its own control, two settings may be possible. The documented material is not sufficient to promise one outcome.

- Position the toaster. Place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface with clear space around the body and above the slots. Its listed footprint is 29 x 30 cm; the 19 cm dimension is part of the published overall measurement.
- Check the tray and slots. Make sure the crumb tray is seated and that no loose crumbs or foreign objects are inside. Never insert metal tools into a toaster.
- Choose a starting browning level. Use the variable control. The manual’s reference points are 1 for light, 4 for medium and 7 for dark. Start conservatively with unfamiliar bread.
- Load the bread. Place one slice in each slot you intend to use. Do not force oversized slices into the openings; bread must move freely with the lever.
- Start the cycle. Push the lever down. Watch the first cycle rather than walking away, especially when changing bread type or setting.
- Inspect if needed. Use Lift & Check to raise the bread and view its colour. Lower the lever again if more toasting is required.
- Stop early when necessary. Press CANCEL if the toast is ready, the bread is browning too quickly or you see a problem.
- Use the dedicated modes for special cases. Select REHEAT for previously toasted bread that only needs warming, or DEFROST for frozen bread, following the manual’s control instructions.
- Remove toast safely. Wait for the slices to rise fully and handle them by the edges. Do not reach into the slots while the toaster is powered.
- Clean after cooling. Unplug the appliance, let it cool and empty the removable crumb tray. Replace the tray before the next use.
Does the ST-484 toast evenly?
There is no accessible independent result that answers this question. CHOICE lists toasting evenness as one of its test categories for the model, but the detailed score is behind member access. The available information therefore cannot support a claim that the ST-484 browns evenly, leaves pale edges or produces a particular result.
Evenness is also different from colour preference. A slice can be evenly browned but darker or lighter than you like. If consistency matters, test at least three cycles using the same bread, setting and number of slices. Compare colour across the surface and between cycles, and record whether changing the number of loaded slots alters the result. Treat those observations as your own test, not as a substitute for a published laboratory score.

Because product listings do not always identify which measurement is width, depth or height, use the complete set rather than assuming a particular orientation. Measure the intended counter area and leave room to operate the lever, remove the crumb tray and handle hot toast.
Four-slot toasters normally occupy more counter length than two-slot models. The benefit is fewer batches when serving several people; the trade-off is a larger permanent footprint. If you store the toaster in a cabinet, check that the opening is wider and taller than the appliance and that the toaster can be lifted without striking shelves or doors.
Cleaning and everyday care
The removable crumb tray is the main documented cleaning aid. Empty it frequently, particularly after using seeded or multigrain bread. Unplug the toaster first and wait until it is cool. Wipe the exterior with a lightly damp cloth, keeping moisture away from the slots and controls, and never immerse the appliance.

The one-year warranty means purchase records are important. Retain the receipt, model number and any retailer documentation. Warranty coverage, exclusions and the current claims process can change, so verify them with the seller at the time of purchase.
