There is no defensible, universal ranking of the four “worst” Android brands for software support. Update promises vary by model, price tier, launch year and market, so the fairest answer is a qualified shortlist: Motorola, Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO frequently offer shorter or less predictable support than the strongest current policies, especially on inexpensive phones. Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO also share much of the available policy evidence and should not be treated as four independent, directly measured competitors.
Before buying, compare two separate figures for the exact handset: how many major Android upgrades are promised, and how long security patches will continue. A phone can stop receiving new Android versions while still receiving security fixes, or lose both at the same time.
What does “worst software support” mean on Android?
“Worst” should mean a comparatively short or inconsistent commitment to both operating-system upgrades and security maintenance, not that every phone from a brand is abandoned quickly. Android manufacturers set policies by device, and a premium model from a company can receive substantially more support than its budget models.

Major Android upgrades are full-version releases that can change system features, APIs and user-interface behavior. Security updates are narrower patches for disclosed vulnerabilities. They may continue after major-version upgrades end, so a single number such as “three years of updates” is incomplete unless it identifies which type of update is covered.

The comparison below uses the commitments and practices described by Android Authority, Xiaomi’s official support policy, Which? and Samsung Knox documentation. It is a qualified shortlist, not a laboratory ranking of identical phones released at the same time.
Which four brands fit the qualified shortlist?
The four names are Motorola, Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO. The last three are closely related product brands, and Xiaomi’s official policy page discusses all of them together. Their inclusion reflects a limited general baseline and model-to-model variation, not proof that every phone under each logo has the same support period.
Motorola: the biggest gap between budget and premium tiers
Android Authority’s comparative policy reporting found that Motorola flagships generally received two major Android upgrades and two, sometimes three, years of security patches. Budget phones were commonly listed with one Android upgrade and two years of patches. The same reporting records longer promises for selected models, so those figures describe a pattern rather than a universal rule.

That tier spread is why Motorola belongs on a “least consistent” shortlist. A shopper who assumes a low-cost Motorola has the same lifecycle as a premium model can overestimate how long the device will remain secure. The exact model page and its launch-year promise matter more than the Motorola name on the back.
Xiaomi: a short general security floor, with exceptions
Xiaomi’s official Product Support Policy Overview says security updates for Xiaomi smartphones are typically maintained for at least two years after the model’s first shipment. It also notes that some models may receive three years or longer. The statement is a general policy description, not a promise that every Xiaomi phone receives the same number of Android-version upgrades.
Android Authority’s comparison describes upgrade support as differing by product line. Consequently, a Xiaomi phone’s security-patch floor and its Android-upgrade count must be checked separately. The support clock described by Xiaomi begins with the first shipment of that model, not the day an individual buyer activates a handset.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Redmi: the logo does not establish a longer lifecycle
Redmi is covered by the same Xiaomi support FAQ, which says Xiaomi, REDMI and POCO smartphones generally receive security maintenance for at least two years after first shipment, with longer periods possible for some models. The FAQ does not provide one Android-version upgrade count that applies to every Redmi device.
Redmi’s broad range makes model-level checking especially important. A recent, higher-tier Redmi can have a different promise from an entry-level model released in the same year. Treat the shared policy language as a baseline, then confirm the handset’s advertised Android upgrades and security end date.
POCO: unclear upgrade promises in comparative reporting
POCO is also included in Xiaomi’s official support scope. Xiaomi states the same typical minimum of two years of security updates after first shipment, while allowing that some models receive three years or more. Android Authority has described POCO’s Android-upgrade commitments as unclear and dependent on the product line.
That uncertainty is the practical concern: a buyer may find a security-duration statement without an equally explicit major-version schedule. Ask for both commitments before purchase, and record the exact model number because similarly named POCO phones can have different launch dates and policies.
How do the four names compare on Android upgrades and security patches?
The table separates the two kinds of support and identifies what is, and is not, established by the available policies. “Not stated” means the cited policy does not give a single figure for every model.

| POCO | Product-line commitments described as unclear in Android Authority’s comparison | Typically at least two years; some models may receive three years or longer | Exact handset and launch date are essential | First shipment of the model, according to the Xiaomi FAQ |
These figures are not directly equivalent promises. Motorola’s numbers are reported patterns by tier, while Xiaomi’s two-year statement is a general security baseline. Neither should be converted into a claim that every model receives exactly the same treatment.

Why do budget phones often have weaker support?
Manufacturers can assign different update resources to different hardware tiers. A budget phone may use a chipset or camera stack that requires more vendor-specific adaptation for each Android release, while its lower selling price gives the company less time to maintain it. The result is often fewer major upgrades, a shorter patch window, or less explicit documentation.
Do not infer support from retail price alone. Check the launch date, the model code and the written promise. A discounted older flagship can be closer to the end of its support clock than a newly released mid-range phone, because Xiaomi’s documented timing, for example, is measured from first shipment.
Is ASUS a fourth independent “worst” brand?
Android Authority’s comparison characterizes ASUS commitments as weaker than leading manufacturers, but the available evidence does not include a current, official, model-by-model ASUS policy suitable for a firm ranking. For that reason, ASUS is better treated as a candidate requiring device-specific verification, not as a measured fourth-place result.
This distinction matters whenever a manufacturer changes policy between generations. A current ASUS handset could have a longer promise than an older comparison suggests, while another model may still have a short schedule. Require an official support statement for the exact model before drawing a conclusion.
How does a strong policy change the comparison?
Samsung provides a useful counterexample to the shorter commitments above. Samsung Knox documentation says that, starting with the Galaxy S24, devices receive seven years of support and security patches. The documentation was last updated March 7, 2025; the statement applies to the specified Galaxy S24 devices and should not automatically be transferred to every Samsung model.
Which?’s comparison likewise reports a wide spread among manufacturers and tiers, with some newer or premium phones supported far beyond the shorter periods discussed here. Policies have improved, so an older article or a brand-level reputation can be out of date. Compare release-specific terms rather than assuming that all Android phones follow the same lifecycle.

How can you check a phone’s real support before buying?
Use this process for a new, used or refurbished handset. It prevents a brand reputation from substituting for a model-level commitment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the exact model. Record the complete name, storage variant and model number. Similar names can refer to different generations and support schedules.
- Find the launch or first-shipment date. If the manufacturer measures support from first shipment, as Xiaomi does, calculate the remaining period from that date rather than from your purchase date.
- Locate the written Android-upgrade promise. Look for a number of major Android versions, not vague wording such as “long-term updates.” If no number is published, mark the upgrade count as not stated.
- Locate the security-patch end date or duration. Confirm whether the promise covers monthly, quarterly or unspecified patches. A patch duration without an Android-version count is only half the answer.
- Check the market and carrier variant. Regional and carrier editions can have different release schedules or eligibility. Use documentation for the country and variant you will actually buy.
- Check the manufacturer’s support page after launch. Policies can change, and a retailer listing may copy an older promise. Save the relevant page or announcement with the date you checked.
- Calculate remaining support. Subtract the time already elapsed since launch or first shipment. Compare the remaining security window with how long you expect to keep the phone.
What happens when major Android upgrades stop?
The phone can continue to function, but it will remain on its last supported Android version. Apps may still run for a while, and security patches may continue if the manufacturer separates the two schedules. Eventually, an unpatched vulnerability, an incompatible app or a banking service’s minimum-version requirement can make continued use less practical.
When the security window ends, reduce exposure: install apps only from trusted sources, keep browsers and messaging apps current, use a screen lock and two-factor authentication, and avoid treating the device as suitable for sensitive activity indefinitely. These steps reduce risk but do not replace manufacturer patches.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you interpret “years of updates” in a phone advertisement?
Ask what the number includes. “Seven years” may combine Android versions and security patches, while another company may advertise only security maintenance. The duration may also begin at launch, first shipment or another date, and it may apply only to a premium tier or a particular region.
Separate the claim into four fields: major Android upgrades, security-patch duration, start date and eligible model or market. If any field is missing, the promise cannot be compared fairly with a fully specified policy.
What is the practical verdict on these four brands?
Motorola’s reported budget-tier pattern is the clearest example of uneven support within one manufacturer. Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO share a general security baseline of at least two years after first shipment, but their Android-upgrade schedules are model-dependent and, for POCO, described as unclear in comparative reporting. None of those statements proves that every current phone from the four names has the shortest support in the market.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a phone receive security patches after its Android version upgrades end?
Yes. Manufacturers can continue vulnerability fixes after stopping major Android releases, although the schedules are separate and may end at different times. Check the patch end date rather than assuming the last Android version marks the end of all maintenance.
Do carrier or regional versions change an update schedule?
They can. Carriers and regional certifications may delay or alter rollout eligibility, so use support information for the country and variant you plan to buy instead of relying on a global announcement.
Where can I see my current Android security-patch level?
On most phones, open Settings, choose About phone or Android version, and read the Android security update date. That date shows the latest patch installed; it does not by itself tell you when the manufacturer will stop issuing patches.
Does buying a refurbished phone restart its support clock?
No. Support periods are generally tied to the model’s launch or first shipment, not to the date of resale. A refurbished handset can therefore have much less remaining support than a new phone with the same retail name.
