You can let people ask business questions in plain language without giving an unconstrained language model direct database access. The most reliable alternatives to free-form text-to-SQL are governed semantic layers, data agents with approved schemas, deterministic query aliases or blueprints, and conversational analytics built into a BI or lakehouse platform. These patterns define metrics and joins, resolve ambiguous values, validate or constrain generated queries, enforce the user’s permissions, and preserve reusable logic. Choose among them by comparing grounding, determinism, security, ambiguity handling, source coverage, auditability, performance, cost, and portability—not by model fluency alone.
What can I use instead of text-to-SQL?
Use a semantic layer or semantic store when definitions and joins must be centralized; a governed data agent when users need broader, supervised exploration; curated aliases or blueprints when recurring questions should run predictably; and embedded conversational analytics when the BI or lakehouse platform already owns the semantic model and access controls.
These approaches do not eliminate SQL. They move SQL generation behind controls that supply approved context, limit execution, and make the resulting answer traceable. A production design can combine them: a semantic layer defines metrics, aliases handle high-volume questions, and an agent handles the long tail under read-only, identity-aware execution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A semantic layer translates business language into approved fields, tables, joins, metrics, and policies before a query is produced. It gives the model a governed vocabulary instead of asking it to infer the company’s definitions from raw schema names.

Semantic stores centralize definitions and permissions
Oracle’s Enterprise AI NL2SQL pattern uses a semantic store to map business terms to database fields, tables, and joins. Enrichment is separated from a lower-privileged query connection, and execution is authorized with the end user’s permissions. Oracle’s documentation is explicit: “NL2SQL generates SQL only; it does not run the query.” A separate Database Tools MCP Server authorizes and executes the statement, preserving the boundary between generation and access.
This arrangement is useful when finance, sales, and operations must share one definition of measures such as revenue or active customer, while database credentials and row-level policy remain outside the model.
Semantic graphs can add planning and evidence
Sema describes a semantic graph with governed planning, sandboxed and statically analyzed read-only SQL, row-level access, column masking, query logging, visualization, and signed evidence. Those are vendor claims, not independent benchmarks, so confirm how each control is implemented in your environment. The architectural idea is still valuable: the system plans against explicit relationships and emits evidence alongside the result.
When should you choose this pattern?
- Your organization has formal metric definitions and approved joins.
- Multiple applications need the same business vocabulary.
- Access decisions must be enforced at execution time for each user or tenant.
- You want semantic assets that can be versioned and reviewed separately from prompts.
What are deterministic query aliases and blueprints?
An alias or blueprint is a reviewed query pattern with parameters, facets, or value mappings. Instead of generating a new query for every request, the system identifies a known intent and fills approved inputs.
EDB’s two-path model
EDB’s semantic knowledge base supports open-ended and deterministic paths. An agent can search schema and join information for exploratory analytics, while reviewed semantic aliases provide parameterized SELECT statements for recurring questions. EDB states that both the search and alias tools are read-only.
For example, “monthly bookings by region” can map to one reviewed statement with parameters for date range and region. The alias can be tested like application code, while the exploratory path remains available for questions that have no existing template.
Google Cloud QueryData context sets
Google Cloud QueryData uses context sets containing curated query blueprints, query facets, and value searches. It can resolve an informal place name to an exact database value, match the user’s intent, ask a disambiguation question, synthesize SQL, and execute it. This is a strong fit when the organization has recurring questions and known policy logic.

Google also documents parameterized secure views for row-level authorization and multi-tenant isolation. Put those views in the data path rather than relying on instructions that merely tell an agent not to show another tenant’s rows.
When are aliases better than open generation?
- The same questions occur frequently and must return consistent results.
- Regulated metrics need a review trail before release.
- Allowed filters and dimensions are known in advance.
- Latency and predictable cost matter more than coverage of unusual questions.
How do governed data agents differ from unrestricted text-to-SQL?
A governed agent limits what the model can see and do. It selects approved schemas, supplies source-specific instructions and examples, validates a candidate query, and runs it through an identity-aware connection.
Microsoft Fabric data agents
Microsoft Fabric data agents can use selected schemas, source instructions, and example queries. The documented flow retrieves similar examples, generates T-SQL, validates it against the approved schema, and executes it through the SQL analytics endpoint. Microsoft describes the standard NL2SQL tool as “optimized for stable, predictable behavior” and recommends it for production data agents where consistent output between releases is important.
Advanced NL2SQL is a preview path. It can perform multiple reasoning steps, resolve filters, inspect schema, or ask a clarifying question. Treat that flexibility as an evaluation item rather than an automatic upgrade: preview behavior, support terms, and release details can change.
Separate generation from execution
The Oracle pattern illustrates a general rule: the component that proposes SQL should not possess unrestricted credentials. Execute through a broker, endpoint, or service that applies the caller’s identity, read-only policy, row filters, and logging. This also gives security teams one place to revoke access or add validation without rewriting prompts.
What a governed agent should validate
- Tables, columns, and joins belong to the approved source scope.
- Only permitted statement types and functions are used.
- Row-level and column-level policies apply to the requesting identity.
- Large scans, excessive result sets, and unsafe constructs are rejected or bounded.
- The final query, parameters, user, source, and returned evidence are logged.
Can conversational analytics in a BI or lakehouse replace text-to-SQL?
It can replace the user-facing experience, but it still uses query generation behind the scenes. The advantage is that the BI or lakehouse platform already knows its tables, semantic model, permissions, and visualization layer.
Google Cloud conversational analytics
Google Cloud conversational analytics maps natural-language questions to table schemas, generates compatible SQL, executes it, and returns summaries or visualizations. Business glossaries, verified SQL queries, and system instructions can improve accuracy. The feature is documented as Preview, so verify regional availability, support terms, data residency, and pricing before making it a core dependency.

Power BI Q&A and the roadmap constraint
Power BI Q&A is a legacy BI-native option. Microsoft says Q&A experiences are going away in February 2027 and recommends Copilot for Power BI as the more advanced integrated alternative. New projects should treat that retirement as a roadmap constraint and assess the replacement experience, migration effort, and governance controls before investing in Q&A-specific assets.

Match the control you need most to the architecture, then combine patterns where necessary.
| Architecture | Best fit | Main control | Primary trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semantic layer or store | Shared metrics, joins, and policy definitions | Central business vocabulary and identity-aware execution | Requires sustained modeling and governance work |
| Governed data agent | Exploration across approved schemas | Schema selection, examples, validation, and brokered execution | Open-ended answers still need ambiguity and cost controls |
| Aliases or blueprints | High-volume recurring questions | Reviewed, parameterized read-only queries | Coverage is limited to modeled intents |
| BI or lakehouse conversational analytics | Users already work in one analytics platform | Native semantic context, permissions, and visual output | Platform coupling and possible preview or retirement constraints |
How should I compare alternatives to NL2SQL?
Use a scorecard based on actual user tasks, not a generic accuracy claim. Ask each option to answer the same ambiguous, permission-sensitive, and high-volume questions.
Grounding and semantics
Check whether the system can consume approved metric definitions, joins, glossaries, examples, and source-specific instructions. A fluent answer using the wrong definition is a semantic failure, not a language failure.
Determinism
Determine whether a recurring question can invoke a reviewed alias or blueprint, and whether the same inputs produce a stable query between releases. Record which requests remain free-form and how they are reviewed.

Security
Verify least-privilege credentials, row-level security, column masking, tenant isolation, read-only execution, and identity propagation. These controls must be enforced by the data path or execution service, not by prompt wording.
Ambiguity handling
Test informal names, synonyms, missing date ranges, and terms that map to multiple entities. The system should resolve a value from an approved vocabulary or ask a clarification question before execution.

Source coverage
List the warehouses, lakehouses, operational databases, documents, and federated sources users actually need. Confirm whether one agent can cover them, whether each source has its own semantic assets, and where cross-source joins are supported.
Auditability
Require visibility into the generated query, parameters, source, user identity, policy decision, result, and supporting evidence. Version aliases, blueprints, glossaries, and examples like code so a change can be reviewed and rolled back.
Performance and cost
Measure bytes processed, rows returned, token consumption, latency, concurrency, and retry behavior under realistic workloads. Google’s Conversational Analytics API documents one-Explore-at-a-time behavior for Looker queries, row and bytes-processed limits, an 8,192-token output limit, result-size truncation, and reduced reasoning accuracy on large data volumes. Test those limits against peak usage rather than assuming a demo will scale.
Portability and operating model
Ask whether semantic definitions and query assets can move between engines or are tied to one cloud. A portable semantic contract may outlive a particular agent, endpoint, or BI feature.
How do I implement a safer AI data-querying system?
Build the controls in the data path first, then add conversational behavior.
- Define approved metrics. Document names, formulas, grain, time zones, valid dimensions, and owners. Mark synonyms and prohibited interpretations.
- Map relationships. Publish allowable joins, keys, cardinality assumptions, and source freshness. Keep exploratory schema search separate from production metric definitions.
- Create deterministic assets. Turn the most common questions into reviewed aliases or blueprints with typed parameters and bounded filters.
- Constrain the agent. Select schemas, add examples and source instructions, and restrict statement types and functions.
- Broker execution. Route every query through a service or endpoint that applies the caller’s identity, row and column policies, read-only rules, limits, and logging.
- Add ambiguity resolution. Connect approved value searches and require clarification when a term has multiple valid matches.
- Show evidence. Return the query or a readable explanation of the metric, filters, time period, and source used. Preserve signed or otherwise verifiable evidence where the platform supports it.
- Test and monitor. Maintain a test set of normal, ambiguous, adversarial, and permission-sensitive questions. Track wrong metrics, unauthorized rows, failed validations, latency, scan volume, and user corrections.
What are the main failure modes and fixes?
The answer uses a plausible but wrong metric
Fix it by binding the term to a semantic definition or reviewed alias, including grain and time-window rules. Show the definition with the result so a user can spot a mismatch.

A user sees data from another team or tenant
Enforce row-level security, parameterized secure views, and identity propagation at execution time. Prompt instructions are not a substitute for database policy.
Free-form exploration generates expensive scans
Apply bytes, row, time-range, and concurrency limits before execution. Offer a preview or aggregate-first path, and log rejected queries so the semantic model can be improved.
A platform feature changes or disappears
Preview labels and deprecation notices are architecture risks. Google marks Conversational Analytics and QueryData pages as Preview, Microsoft labels Advanced NL2SQL as Preview, and Microsoft has announced the February 2027 retirement of Power BI Q&A. Keep semantic definitions and aliases exportable so a front-end change does not erase the business logic.

They can be more reliable for governed business questions because they reduce ambiguity and constrain the execution path, but no independent benchmark establishes a universal accuracy, latency, or total-cost winner across these architectures. Vendor descriptions and feature claims should be validated with your schemas, policies, workload sizes, and user vocabulary.
A practical evaluation compares identical questions across a semantic layer, a governed agent, deterministic aliases, and the incumbent text-to-SQL flow. Score metric correctness, authorization, clarification behavior, reproducibility, query cost, response time, and evidence quality separately; one aggregate accuracy number can hide a serious security or governance failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI data agent work without exposing database credentials to the model?
Yes. Keep credentials in an execution broker or analytics endpoint and give the model only schema metadata, semantic context, and tool contracts. The broker can apply the caller’s identity, read-only rules, row filters, and logging after the model proposes a query.
What should I do with questions that have no approved alias?
Route them to a governed exploratory path that searches approved schema and join metadata, then validate the generated query before execution. Capture successful questions for review; candidates that recur can become new parameterized aliases or blueprints.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How can I preserve semantic definitions if we change cloud platforms?
Store metric formulas, dimensions, join rules, synonyms, owners, and tests in version-controlled artifacts rather than only in a vendor UI. During a migration, map those contracts to the target engine and rerun the same permission and correctness test set.
Do these approaches also answer questions about documents and unstructured files?
Some platforms advertise broader source coverage, but structured-query controls do not automatically provide document retrieval or trustworthy citations. Treat document search as a separate capability and test how its evidence is combined with governed database results.
