For the strongest practical isolation, use a microVM-based design; choose gVisor when OCI/container compatibility matters most, and choose Kubernetes Agent Sandbox when you need stateful, multi-tenant lifecycle management. Docker Sandboxes package a separate Linux kernel, isolated Docker Engine, workspace controls, network policy and credential proxying for local agent work. gVisor places a userspace application kernel between the agent and the host while retaining Docker and Kubernetes integration. Kubernetes Agent Sandbox adds warm pools, hibernation, persistent storage and scheduled cleanup, while allowing gVisor or Kata Containers as the runtime.
No option wins every workload. The correct choice depends on whether your priority is escape resistance, local filesystem access, persistence, networking, startup behavior, OCI compatibility or the operational burden your team can own.
What is Anthropic’s sandbox-runtime model, and what must an alternative match?
Anthropic’s published reference pattern runs code on isolated server infrastructure inside an ephemeral gVisor container. The session filesystem is discarded, and code does not execute on the user’s local machine. That arrangement limits the blast radius of malicious or faulty agent output, but it also limits persistence and direct access to a developer’s local files.

The design is a trade-off between agent capability and the amount of intervention required from the user. An alternative should therefore be judged on the boundary it creates, not on the word “sandbox” alone.

These dimensions explain why a fast local sandbox and a platform for thousands of long-lived agents are different products even when both isolate code.
Which alternative gives an AI agent the strongest isolation?
A microVM generally gives the clearest boundary because each sandbox has its own guest Linux kernel. The agent does not share the host kernel in the same way it does with a conventional container. Docker describes its security model this way: “The primary trust boundary is the microVM.”
That does not make a microVM automatically safe. The hypervisor, guest image, device model, orchestration layer, mounted data and network proxy remain part of the trusted-computing base. A misconfigured mount or credential proxy can still expose sensitive data even when kernel isolation is strong.
gVisor is a strong middle position. Its per-sandbox userspace application kernel handles system-call interfaces instead of passing them straight to the host kernel, reducing escape risk while preserving an OCI-oriented workflow. It is a different security and performance profile from a guest-kernel microVM.
Conventional containers with seccomp, namespaces, Landlock, AppArmor, bubblewrap or nsjail can reduce risk further, but they retain a shared host kernel. They are best treated as hardened process isolation, not as equivalent to a separate-kernel boundary.

Local coding agents that need microVM isolation and controlled access to a repository. |
| Kubernetes Agent Sandbox | Runtime-agnostic API; can use gVisor for userspace-kernel isolation or Kata Containers for VM-grade isolation. | Stateful singleton workloads, warm pools, hibernation and resume, persistent storage and scheduled deletion. | Provided through the Kubernetes networking and selected runtime policies; exact behavior depends on the cluster configuration. | Kubernetes-native API with SDKs for programmatic management. There is no authoritative, apples-to-apples startup, memory, throughput or price benchmark across these choices in the available documentation. Do not select one on an invented “X times faster” or “Y percent cheaper” claim; measure your own agent workload.
When is gVisor the right alternative?
Choose gVisor when your team wants to keep Docker or Kubernetes workflows while placing a userspace kernel between untrusted agent code and the host. Its runsc executable implements the OCI runtime specification, so existing image and orchestration patterns can remain recognizable.
What gVisor changes
In a conventional container, application system calls are handled by the host kernel. gVisor implements those interfaces in a distinct application kernel for each sandbox, reducing the attack surface exposed to the host. Google’s documentation describes it as “a strong layer of isolation between running applications and the host operating system.”
What gVisor does not provide automatically
gVisor does not define your filesystem, egress or secret policy. A writable host mount, unrestricted network route or environment variable containing a long-lived token can defeat the practical goal of isolation. Configure those controls at the container and cluster layers, and keep agent sessions disposable unless persistence is a deliberate requirement.
Typical gVisor decision
Use it for CI jobs, code execution services or agent workers that need broad Linux and OCI compatibility but do not require a full guest kernel. Select a microVM instead when the threat model requires stronger separation from the host kernel or when the surrounding platform already supports microVM scheduling.

Docker Sandboxes run each agent inside a lightweight microVM with its own Linux kernel and a separate Docker Engine. Docker states that processes in one sandbox are invisible to the host and to other sandboxes, which is a materially different boundary from a container that shares the host kernel.

Which workspace mode should you use?
- Mountless: the agent receives no host repository mount. Use it for experiments or tasks that should have no direct access to local source files.
- Direct mount: the repository is mounted read-write. This is convenient when the agent must edit the working tree, but a compromised process can alter those files.
- Clone: the host repository remains read-only while the sandbox works on a private in-VM clone. This is useful when you want the agent to make changes without granting write access to the original checkout.
How are networking and credentials handled?
Docker documents deny-by-default proxied outbound networking. The proxy can mediate which connections leave the sandbox instead of giving the agent unrestricted host networking. Credential injection can occur through a host-side proxy, keeping the credential values out of the VM; treat the proxy and its policy as security-critical infrastructure.
What hardware and operating-system requirements apply?
On local Linux, Docker’s installation documentation requires KVM hardware virtualization, a 64-bit processor, Ubuntu 24.04 or later and membership in the kvm group. On macOS, local sandboxes require Sonoma 14 or later on Apple silicon. On Windows, they require Windows 11 and Windows Hypervisor Platform. If virtualization is disabled in firmware, unavailable to a nested virtual machine or blocked by organizational policy, the microVM cannot start until that dependency is fixed.
When should a team choose Kubernetes Agent Sandbox?
Choose Kubernetes Agent Sandbox when isolation is a platform concern rather than a single developer command. Its API targets isolated, stateful, singleton workloads and includes warm pools for faster allocation, hibernation and resume, persistent storage, scheduled deletion and SDKs for programmatic control.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why the runtime-agnostic design matters
The API separates lifecycle management from the isolation mechanism. You can pair it with gVisor when OCI compatibility and userspace-kernel isolation are the priority, or with Kata Containers when you want VM-grade isolation. That lets a platform team standardize scheduling, storage and cleanup while changing the runtime as the threat model evolves.
Which workloads fit?
The project identifies untrusted code execution, agentic web browsing, computer-use tasks and sophisticated data analysis as target workloads. Persistent volumes and hibernation are useful when an agent must pause and resume without rebuilding its entire environment.
What does the platform team have to operate?
You own the Kubernetes control plane, node security, image supply chain, storage classes, network policies, runtime configuration, observability and deletion guarantees. A warm pool can reduce allocation latency, but it also consumes capacity and requires careful isolation between tenants. Scheduled deletion should be treated as a data-retention control, not merely a cost optimization.

How do Firecracker, Kata Containers and hardened containers fit?
Firecracker microVMs and Kata Containers belong to the separate-guest-kernel category. They are sensible candidates for follow-up evaluation when you need microVM or VM-grade boundaries, but the available material does not provide primary documentation or normalized performance and pricing figures for a fair product-level recommendation.
Hardened OCI containers and process-level tools such as namespaces, seccomp, Landlock, bubblewrap and nsjail can be valuable where a shared host kernel is acceptable. They generally have a smaller operational footprint than a microVM, but a policy mistake or host-kernel vulnerability has a different blast radius. Do not describe them as equivalent substitutes for a separate guest kernel.
How much stronger is a microVM than a container for an AI coding agent?
A microVM adds a separate guest kernel, so agent system calls are handled inside the VM rather than directly by the host kernel. That is a stronger isolation boundary than a conventional shared-kernel container and usually a more substantial step than adding one syscall filter.
The security gain must be evaluated end to end. If the agent receives a read-write host mount, unrestricted egress, a powerful cloud credential or an overly permissive management socket, the data and control plane can still be compromised. Conversely, a carefully configured gVisor deployment may provide an appropriate boundary with better compatibility for an existing container fleet.
Use threat modeling instead of a blanket ranking: identify what the agent can read, write, call and persist, then select the smallest boundary that meets the consequence of compromise.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow should you choose an isolation architecture?
- Define the protected assets. List source repositories, SSH keys, cloud credentials, production APIs, customer data and host control sockets. Separate assets the agent must read from assets it must never see.
- Set the kernel boundary. Select shared-kernel policy controls, gVisor or a separate-kernel microVM based on the escape consequences and your compliance requirements.
- Choose the workspace model. Prefer mountless or clone-based operation for untrusted tasks. Grant a direct read-write mount only when the workflow genuinely requires it.
- Design network egress. Start deny-by-default, then allow only the package registries, source hosts, APIs and callback endpoints the task needs. Log denials and review exceptions.
- Handle credentials through brokers. Inject short-lived, least-privilege credentials through a proxy or broker where possible. Never place long-lived secrets in an image, repository or unrestricted environment variable.
- Define lifecycle and retention. Decide when a session is deleted, what survives hibernation, how persistent volumes are encrypted and who can resume a suspended agent.
- Test the failure path. Verify behavior when virtualization is unavailable, the network proxy is down, storage cannot attach, an image is revoked or the cleanup controller fails.
- Measure your real workload. Record cold-start latency, warm-start latency, memory footprint, build throughput, failure rate and infrastructure cost under representative agent tasks. Publish the test conditions with every result.
What common mistakes weaken agent sandboxes?
- Assuming “container” means isolated kernel: standard containers share the host kernel. Verify the runtime actually selected by the scheduler.
- Mounting the whole home directory: this can expose credentials, browser profiles, source trees and configuration unrelated to the task. Mount only the minimum path, preferably read-only.
- Allowing unrestricted outbound traffic: an agent can exfiltrate files or fetch unreviewed tools. Use an explicit egress policy and monitor DNS and proxy logs.
- Persisting sessions indefinitely: stale workspaces retain tokens, caches and sensitive artifacts. Apply expiration and deletion policies, including to persistent volumes.
- Treating a credential proxy as harmless plumbing: the proxy can become a high-value target. Restrict which identities it can mint and which destinations it can reach.
- Ignoring nested virtualization: local microVMs need hardware virtualization. In a cloud VM or corporate laptop, confirm that KVM, Apple virtualization or Windows Hypervisor Platform is available to the workload.
- Using unsupported performance claims: startup and memory behavior vary with image size, kernel, storage, architecture and workload. Compare measurements taken on the same hardware and policy.
Which option is the best starting point?
For a local AI coding agent that handles untrusted repositories, start with Docker Sandboxes if the documented operating-system and virtualization requirements fit your machine. Their microVM boundary, clone workspace and proxied networking address the most common local risks.

For an existing Docker or Kubernetes estate that needs a stronger boundary without redesigning every image, evaluate gVisor first. For a shared platform serving many agents with persistence, warm allocation and programmatic lifecycle, use Kubernetes Agent Sandbox and select gVisor or Kata Containers according to the required boundary.
Keep Firecracker, Kata Containers outside that Kubernetes API, and hardened process tools on the evaluation list when your architecture or threat model calls for them, but obtain runtime-specific documentation and run controlled tests before making a final choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an isolated AI agent still access my local files?
Only if you deliberately provide a filesystem path or synchronization mechanism. Mountless operation removes direct access; clone mode gives the agent a private copy while leaving the host checkout read-only, whereas a direct mount can permit read-write changes.
Do I need Kubernetes to use gVisor?
No. gVisor’s runsc runtime integrates with Docker as well as Kubernetes. Kubernetes becomes relevant when you need cluster scheduling, multi-tenant policy and fleet-level lifecycle features.
What happens to an agent’s data after a sandbox is deleted?
Ephemeral files disappear with the session unless you explicitly export results or attach persistent storage. Persistent volumes, hibernated instances and host mounts each create separate retention obligations that should be documented and cleaned up.
Can microVM isolation stop an agent from leaking a cloud token?
Not by itself. A token available to the agent can still be used through an allowed network path, so pair the microVM with short-lived credentials, a constrained broker or proxy and deny-by-default egress.
How should I benchmark sandbox choices before deployment?
Use the same agent tasks, image, repository, hardware and network policy for each candidate. Measure cold and warm startup, peak memory, build or test throughput, failure recovery and total infrastructure cost, and record whether the run used persistent storage or a warm pool.
