A yellow light on an Amazon Echo normally means a notification or a message from an Alexa contact. Say “Alexa, what are my notifications?”, then “Alexa, what are my messages?”. If the light returns after Alexa answers, review notification settings in the Alexa app. If Alexa does not respond, check power, internet, Wi‑Fi and the microphone mute state before restarting or resetting the device.
What the yellow light means
Amazon describes a flashing yellow Echo light as an indicator that you have a notification or a message from an Alexa contact. The broader Echo light guide describes a slow yellow burst every few seconds as a message or notification, while Amazon’s developer guidance calls the same state a pulsing yellow ring.
The light can remain visible until the notification or message is retrieved, dismissed or otherwise cleared. A yellow ring therefore usually does not indicate a hardware fault. Start with voice commands rather than unplugging the speaker.

1. Ask Alexa to read notifications
- Stand close enough for the Echo microphone to hear you.
- Say “Alexa, what are my notifications?”
- Listen for each notification and follow any instruction Alexa gives to clear it.
This is the most direct check because it asks Alexa to identify the item that triggered the yellow indicator. Wait for Alexa to finish speaking, then look at the ring. If it goes dark, the notification was the cause.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Ask for messages separately
Notifications and messages are different categories. Say “Alexa, what are my messages?” even if the notification command reports nothing. A message from an Alexa contact can keep the yellow indicator active.
If Alexa reads a message, let playback finish and follow the available voice prompt to mark it handled. Check again after the response ends; the ring may take a moment to stop pulsing.
3. Review notification settings in the Alexa app
When the light keeps returning, an enabled notification category may be generating new alerts. Open the Alexa app and go to its Settings area, then Notifications. The exact wording and position of these controls can vary by app version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Review the notification categories shown for your account.
- Check which Echo device is selected for each category.
- Confirm that you are viewing the same Amazon account used by the Echo with the yellow light.
- Adjust or disable categories that you do not want delivered to that device.
After changing a setting, give the Echo time to synchronize and test it with a voice request. If another household member manages the account, ask them to check the same notification controls; a setting changed on another phone can make the light return.

4. Confirm the device and account
In homes with several Echo speakers, the light may be on a different unit than the one you are addressing. Identify the physical device with the yellow ring, then use the Alexa app to inspect that device’s notification assignment. If multiple Amazon accounts are used in the household, switch to the account that originally registered the speaker before changing settings.
Do not deregister the Echo merely because the light is inconvenient. Deregistration removes the device from the account and requires setup again, so reserve it for a device that cannot be recovered through the simpler steps.
When Alexa says there are no notifications
A “no notifications” response does not rule out a message. Run both voice checks, because Alexa’s notification and messaging queues are separate. Then inspect the app settings and confirm that you are addressing the Echo that is actually lit.
Look at the ring’s behavior while you test:
- Slow yellow bursts every few seconds: consistent with a pending message or notification.
- A solid or rapidly changing color: may indicate a different Echo state, so use the color guide below.
- No response to the wake word: treat the problem as a power, network or microphone issue rather than only a notification issue.
If the two commands produce no item and the app shows no relevant alert, unplug the Echo, reconnect it and allow it to restart. This clears a temporary software state without erasing the device’s registration. If the yellow light returns after the restart, repeat the account and notification checks before considering a reset.

Check whether the color is really yellow
Echo light colors have different meanings. A warm room, a colored lamp or a fast animation can make the ring appear yellow when it is actually orange, red or another color. Use the behavior and color together:
| Light color or pattern | Typical meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow, flashing or pulsing | A notification or a message from an Alexa contact | Ask for notifications, then ask for messages. Review app notification settings. |
| Red | The microphone is muted | Press the microphone button once to unmute, then try the wake word again. |
| Orange | Setup is in progress or the Echo is attempting an internet connection | Check setup status, power and Wi‑Fi instead of clearing notifications. |
| Green | A call or Drop In is active | End or answer the call or Drop In session. |
| Blue | Alexa is listening or processing | Wait for the request to finish; check for a response before issuing another command. |
| Purple | Do Not Disturb or an error state | Check Do Not Disturb and then investigate connectivity or other error messages. |
These meanings apply to the standard Echo light indicators, but animation speed and appearance can differ among Echo models. If the color is not clearly yellow, follow the meaning for the observed color first.
If Alexa does not respond to either command
A yellow ring is useful only when the Echo can hear and process a request. Amazon’s documented recovery checks are best performed in this order.

Confirm internet access
The Echo needs an internet connection to retrieve account notifications and messages. Test the same home network with a phone or computer. If other devices are offline, restore the internet connection first; changing Alexa notification settings will not fix a network outage.
Check Wi‑Fi and the Echo’s connection
Verify that the Echo is connected to the intended Wi‑Fi network. A router change, password change or weak signal can leave the speaker unable to contact Alexa’s services. Move the Echo temporarily closer to the router if practical, then check whether it responds after the connection is restored.
Make sure the microphone is not muted
A red light indicates that the microphones are muted. Press the microphone button to unmute the device, wait for the indicator to change and say the wake word again. A muted Echo cannot hear the two commands needed to clear or inspect the yellow state.

Unplug and reconnect the Echo
- Remove the power adapter from the Echo or the outlet.
- Wait briefly for the device to power down completely.
- Reconnect the supplied adapter.
- Wait for startup and network reconnection to finish.
- Run the notification and message commands again.
This restart does not intentionally erase the device’s account registration. It is a lower-disruption step than deregistration or a factory reset.

Choose the next action when the light persists
| Situation | Next action | Disruption |
|---|---|---|
| Alexa responds and identifies an item | Read or handle the notification/message, then review app categories if alerts keep returning. | Low |
| Alexa responds but reports nothing | Run both commands, check the device/account in the app, then restart the Echo. | Low |
| Alexa does not respond | Check power, internet, Wi‑Fi and mute status; unplug and reconnect. | Low |
| The issue continues after a restart | Use the Echo support workflow for device-specific troubleshooting, software/version help and account actions. | Low to moderate |
| The device remains unusable after support steps | Consider deregistration or a reset only after recording settings and accepting that setup may be required again. | Moderate to high |
Use restart, deregistration and reset carefully
Restart
A restart means removing and restoring power. It is appropriate when the Echo is connected but the light state appears stuck, or when the app and voice responses disagree. Restarting is reversible and normally preserves registration and settings.
Deregistration
Deregistration removes the Echo from its Amazon account. It can help when account association is corrupted or the device is being moved to another account, but it also means the speaker must be registered again. Have the account credentials and Wi‑Fi details available before choosing it.
Reset
A reset returns the Echo to a setup state. Use it only after the power, network, mute, voice-command, app and restart checks have failed, and after recording any settings you need to restore. A reset can require the complete setup process again and may remove customized configuration.

Common mistakes that make the yellow ring return
- Checking only notifications: a message from an Alexa contact is a separate queue, so always ask for messages too.
- Changing settings on the wrong account: the app can display a different Amazon account from the one registered to the Echo.
- Changing settings for the wrong speaker: notification delivery can be assigned to a particular Echo in a multi-device home.
- Confusing colors: red, orange, green, blue and purple indicate other states and require different actions.
- Resetting too soon: a factory reset is disruptive and can require setup again; restart and support checks come first.
- Ignoring the microphone button: a red mute indicator prevents Alexa from hearing any request, regardless of the notification queue.
When replacing the device makes sense
Most persistent yellow-light cases should be addressed with the commands, app settings and recovery checks above. Consider an additional or replacement Amazon Echo only after the speaker remains unreliable through its power, network, account and support workflows, or when the hardware no longer meets your needs. Verify the current model, regional availability and compatibility before buying; a new speaker will still show a yellow indicator whenever its account receives a notification or Alexa message.
