AirPods Pro 3 is the better choice for a new buyer who wants the redesigned fit, stronger dust and water resistance, workout heart-rate sensing, or the longest listening time between charges. AirPods Pro 2 owners do not need to upgrade simply to keep Apple’s core experience: both generations use the H2 chip, Bluetooth 5.3, Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and supported Live Translation features.
The upgrade makes the most sense when a specific Pro 3 change solves a problem you have today. Pro 3 lasts longer on one charge and adds IP57 protection and a heart-rate sensor, but its charging case provides less total listening time than the Pro 2 case. Apple also claims up to twice the Active Noise Cancellation of the original AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 with ANC; that is an Apple laboratory comparison, not an independent Pro 3-versus-Pro 2 test.

What changed in the Pro 3 design and fit
A genuine earbud redesign
Apple describes AirPods Pro 3 as the first redesign of the Pro earbuds. That matters more for fit than for appearance: the shape, contact points and seal can change how securely an earbud stays put and how effectively it blocks outside sound. A redesign is not automatically more comfortable for every ear. Ear canals vary, and the same tip can feel secure for one person and loose or pressurized for another.

Five tip sizes instead of four
Pro 3 includes XXS, XS, S, M and L silicone tips. Apple’s comparison materials list four sizes for Pro 2. The extra XXS option can help listeners whose ears never formed a reliable seal with the smallest Pro 2 tip, while larger ears may still prefer one of the existing sizes. Test each side separately: left and right ear canals often need different sizes.
How to evaluate the seal
- Start with the size that feels secure without forcing the earbud deeply into the canal.
- Run the ear-tip fit test on your paired Apple device and check that the result is good for both ears.
- Walk, talk and move your jaw for several minutes. A tip that passes a stationary test can still loosen during exercise.
- Compare isolation with ANC off and on. A weak seal can make ANC seem ineffective even when the electronics are working normally.
If Pro 2 already stays comfortable and sealed through your normal day, the redesign alone is not a guaranteed reason to replace it. If you have struggled with pressure, slippage or an incomplete seal, Pro 3’s additional size and changed geometry are practical reasons to try it, preferably with a return window.
Noise cancellation: what Apple’s claim does and does not prove
The published multiplier
Apple’s current comparison claim says Pro 3 provides “Up to 2x more Active Noise Cancellation than original AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation,” measured under IEC 60268-24. The claim is a controlled Apple laboratory result and uses the original AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 with ANC as references. It is not an independent head-to-head measurement against AirPods Pro 2.
What you can reasonably expect
In practical use, ANC performance depends on the seal, the frequency of the noise and the way the device is worn. Low, steady sounds such as aircraft or train engines are different from voices, keyboard clicks and sudden traffic noise. A better seal from the new fit can improve perceived isolation even before electronic processing is considered. Conversely, a poor seal can limit both generations.
Pro 2 remains a capable ANC earbud because it also uses Apple’s H2 headphone chip. There is no supplied independent test establishing a universal percentage improvement from Pro 2 to Pro 3, so treat the Apple multiplier as evidence of Apple’s laboratory comparison, not as a promise that every Pro 2 owner will hear twice the reduction.

When ANC justifies an upgrade
- Choose Pro 3 if you routinely need the strongest possible isolation and are willing to verify the fit in your own ears.
- Keep Pro 2 if its ANC already handles your commute, office or travel and you have no fit complaint.
- Do not buy solely for the “2x” wording if your decision requires an independent Pro 2-versus-Pro 3 benchmark; that evidence is not established in the supplied specifications.
Battery life: longer sessions, shorter case total

These are maximum Apple ratings. Actual runtime changes with volume, wireless conditions, calls, microphone use, Spatial Audio, head tracking and other processing. The numbers reveal a clear trade-off: Pro 3 is the better earbud for a single long flight, workday or uninterrupted listening session, while Pro 2 can run longer overall when you regularly return the earbuds to its case.
Which battery pattern fits you?
- Long sessions: Select Pro 3 when you often exceed six hours between opportunities to recharge.
- Frequent case top-ups: Pro 2’s higher case-supported total can reduce how often the case needs a wall or wireless charger.
- Workout tracking: Account for the lower Pro 3 rating when heart-rate sensing is active; the sensor adds a useful capability but consumes part of the available runtime.
Neither model’s rating should be used to estimate battery health after years of use. Rechargeable cells gradually lose capacity, and Apple’s “up to” figures describe new units under specified test conditions.
Durability and water resistance
IP57 versus IP54
AirPods Pro 3 and its case carry an IP57 rating, while AirPods Pro 2 is IP54-rated. Under the applicable controlled laboratory tests, the higher Pro 3 rating indicates stronger protection against dust and water exposure. This is particularly relevant for sweat, rainy commutes and workouts where the case or earbuds may encounter more moisture.
What the ratings do not allow
IP ratings are not a swimming license. Apple says resistance can decline with normal wear, and you should not charge wet earbuds or a wet case. Dry the components fully before placing them in the charging case, and avoid intentionally submerging either model. Salt water, chlorinated water, soap and high-pressure spray can create risks that a laboratory rating does not represent.
For a Pro 2 owner whose earbuds have survived ordinary workouts without trouble, IP57 is useful additional protection rather than a guarantee of longer life. For people who exercise outdoors, sweat heavily or work around dust and splashes, the higher rating is a stronger reason to choose Pro 3.

Workout heart-rate sensing on Pro 3
What the sensor adds
Pro 3 includes a built-in heart-rate monitor intended for workouts in Apple Fitness and compatible third-party iPhone apps running iOS 26 or later. Apple also describes heart-rate sensing with iPhone, iPad or Apple TV workout setups when the earbuds are paired as specified. This lets the earbuds contribute live heart-rate data without requiring a separate chest strap for every session.

Compatibility conditions
- Use a supported iPhone app and iOS 26 or later for third-party workout integration.
- For Apple Fitness sessions, pair the earbuds with the supported iPhone, iPad or Apple TV setup before starting the workout.
- Keep the earbuds seated consistently; a changing seal or one loose earbud can affect whether a workout reading is available.
The supplied specifications establish the feature and its platform requirements, not medical accuracy or a replacement for clinical monitoring. Treat the sensor as workout information, not a diagnostic device. If you already use a watch or chest strap and do not need another source of heart-rate data, this feature may not repay the upgrade cost.
Hardware, connectivity and case changes
What stays the same
Both generations use Apple’s H2 headphone chip and Bluetooth 5.3. That common platform means a Pro 2 owner is not moving from an obsolete wireless standard to a fundamentally different one. Pairing behavior, device switching and audio processing remain within the same Apple ecosystem rather than representing a complete generational reset.
What Pro 3 adds in the case
The Pro 3 MagSafe charging case adds Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. The supplied specifications identify the chip as a Pro 3 case feature; they do not establish a universal range or speed improvement for every finding or tracking task. If locating the case is important, confirm that your iPhone and software support the relevant Find My experience.
Sound quality: avoid assuming an unmeasured upgrade
Apple executive John Ternus called Pro 3 “a massive leap forward” and referred to “fantastic sound quality and the world’s best ANC of any in-ear wireless headphones.” That is Apple’s launch statement, not an independent listening test. The supplied comparison does not provide frequency-response measurements, codec changes or a controlled Pro 2 sound-quality score. Choose Pro 3 for the documented fit, ANC claim, battery, durability and fitness changes rather than assuming a specific tonal improvement.

Hearing features and Live Translation are not Pro 3 exclusives
Hearing Test and Hearing Aid
Apple states that Hearing Test and Hearing Aid work on both AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 when the required firmware and Apple devices are used. A Pro 2 owner therefore does not lose these major hearing features by keeping the current earbuds. Availability can depend on regulatory approval and region, so check the settings and health requirements for your location.
Live Translation
Live Translation supports AirPods Pro 2 and later with current firmware, an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone and iOS 26 or later. Language and regional availability vary. Pro 3 is not the only way to obtain this feature, and buying new earbuds will not bypass an unsupported language, region or iPhone requirement.
Price, discounts and ownership value
Launch price versus today’s price
Apple announced a U.S. starting price of $249 for AirPods Pro 3 in 2025, with store availability beginning September 19, 2025. That is a historical launch MSRP, not a promise about the price you will see now. Retailers can discount either generation, discontinue older stock or bundle accessories.
How to compare the real cost
- Check the current price of a new Pro 3 from an authorized seller.
- Check the current price and warranty status of new Pro 2 stock; do not assume an older model is automatically cheaper.
- Compare return periods, included charging accessories and regional warranty coverage.
- If replacing Pro 2, account for resale or trade-in value only after confirming the condition requirements and final offer.
The lowest-cost choice is whichever model is discounted more at the time you buy. Paying the Pro 3 premium is easiest to justify when you will actually use its fit options, heart-rate sensing, higher resistance rating or longer single-charge runtime.

Should an AirPods Pro 2 owner upgrade?
Upgrade now if one of these problems is real
- You run out of battery during a typical session: Pro 3’s longer ANC listening rating gives more time before the earbuds return to the case.
- Your current fit is unreliable: The redesign and XXS tip provide another path to a stable seal.
- You train with an iPhone: Built-in heart-rate sensing can feed Fitness and compatible apps under the stated iOS requirements.
- Your earbuds face more moisture or dust: IP57 offers a higher laboratory protection rating than Pro 2’s IP54, while still requiring normal care.
- You want the newest ANC implementation: Apple’s claimed improvement may matter, but test the fit and remember that the claim is not an independent Pro 2 comparison.
Keep Pro 2 when it already meets your routine
- Your earbuds fit securely and remain comfortable for hours.
- Six hours of ANC listening per charge is enough for your longest normal session.
- You value the longer total case-supported listening rating.
- You already use another device for workout heart-rate data.
- You want Hearing Test, Hearing Aid or Live Translation; Apple supports those features on Pro 2 under the required software and device conditions.
Keeping Pro 2 is not settling for an unsupported product. Its H2 chip, Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity and shared software features preserve the main Apple earbud experience. Upgrade because a Pro 3 capability solves a concrete limitation, not because the model number changed.

Which model should a new buyer choose?
Choose Pro 3 for the broadest feature set
For a first purchase, Pro 3 is the forward-looking option when its current price is acceptable. It combines the redesigned fit, five tip sizes, the stronger IP57 rating, workout heart-rate sensing and the longest per-charge ANC rating in this comparison. It also includes the newer Ultra Wideband chip in its MagSafe case. These advantages are most valuable to active users, frequent travelers and listeners who cannot recharge during a long session.
Choose Pro 2 when the discount is substantial
Pro 2 remains a sensible new purchase when it is meaningfully less expensive and you prioritize total case runtime over per-charge endurance. You still receive the H2 chip, Bluetooth 5.3 and Apple’s supported hearing and translation features. The trade-offs are the older fit design, lower IP54 rating, no listed workout heart-rate sensor and the shorter single-charge ANC rating.
A simple decision rule
- Need workout heart-rate sensing, the extra tip size or higher resistance? Buy Pro 3.
- Need the longest uninterrupted listening session? Buy Pro 3.
- Need the longest total time before charging the case? Pro 2 has the higher Apple rating.
- Need hearing or Live Translation features? Either generation can qualify; verify firmware, device, operating-system and regional requirements.
- None of those differences matter and Pro 2 is much cheaper? Take the discounted Pro 2.
Checks to make before replacing or returning a pair
Verify software and region support
Update the iPhone, iPad or Apple TV you plan to use, then confirm that the required firmware is installed on the earbuds. This is especially important for Live Translation and workout integrations, where Apple specifies device, operating-system, firmware, language and regional conditions.

Try every suitable tip size, perform the ear-tip fit test and wear the earbuds during the activity that matters most to you. A five-minute desk test cannot reveal whether the seal survives a run, a long call or a flight. If you are upgrading for ANC, compare the same location and noise with each model at an equivalent fit.
Protect the charging case
Regardless of the IP rating, wipe away sweat and moisture and let the earbuds and case dry before charging. Do not treat either model as suitable for swimming or deliberate submersion. A higher rating reduces risk in normal use; it does not remove the need for care.
Bottom-line buying advice
Buy AirPods Pro 3 if you want its redesigned fit, extra XXS tip, longer single-charge endurance, IP57 protection, workout heart-rate sensing or Apple’s latest ANC claim. Keep or buy AirPods Pro 2 when its fit already works, its longer case total is more useful, or its lower current price outweighs those additions. Because both generations share H2 hardware and major hearing features, the right upgrade decision is about the specific benefits you will use—not a blanket requirement for every Pro 2 owner.
