AI video upscaling software enlarges low-resolution footage while estimating cleaner edges, textures, and motion detail, but it cannot reliably recover information that was never captured. Topaz Video is the strongest dedicated desktop choice; DaVinci Resolve Studio suits editors; Video2X is the leading free option; Adobe Firefly offers browser convenience with cloud-processing trade-offs.
The right choice depends less on a universal “best” ranking than on the source: VHS needs deinterlacing and noise control, anime needs line-preserving models, faces need conservative settings, and archival or evidentiary material demands fidelity over attractive but potentially invented detail.
Key takeaways
- Topaz Video is the best starting point for dedicated local enhancement and restoration, while DaVinci Resolve Studio is better when editing, color, audio, and delivery are part of the same workflow.
- Video2X is a free, open-source Windows and Linux option supporting Anime4K, Real-ESRGAN, Real-CUGAN, and RIFE, but setup and hardware requirements are higher than those of commercial applications.
- AI upscaling can make 480p, 720p, or 1080p video look better at a larger display size, but a 4K export does not turn missing source detail into verified 4K-quality footage.
- Deinterlace VHS, DVD, television, and broadcast footage before final enlargement unless the chosen application has a verified integrated workflow.
- Frame interpolation increases frame rate rather than spatial resolution, and interpolation can create warped hands, reflections, hair, fences, and other moving details.
- Test representative short clips before processing an entire video, and judge results both at 100% pixel scale and during normal playback.
Which AI video upscaling software is best?
The best AI video upscaling software depends on the footage, workflow, privacy requirements, and budget. A dedicated enhancer is usually the most straightforward choice for restoration; a full editor is more practical when the project also needs timeline editing, color grading, audio, compositing, and delivery encoding.

What does AI video upscaling actually do?
AI video upscaling analyzes individual frames and, depending on the model, neighboring frames, motion, edges, faces, textures, noise, and compression patterns. A trained model then predicts pixels for a larger output frame. The prediction can look more convincing than a basic resize, but predicted detail is not necessarily detail that existed in the original recording.

Conventional scaling versus AI super-resolution
Conventional scaling enlarges an image with mathematical interpolation such as bilinear, bicubic, or Lanczos scaling. Conventional scaling changes pixel dimensions but generally does not reconstruct plausible missing texture.
AI super-resolution uses learned patterns to estimate edges, fine structure, and temporal consistency. AI models may use single-frame information, multiple neighboring frames, motion analysis, and learned priors about faces, animation, noise, or common textures. The result may be cleaner and sharper, but the result can also contain halos, flicker, false texture, or altered facial features.
Why enhancement is not the same as upscaling
Enhancement can improve a video at its original resolution through denoising, sharpening, deblurring, stabilization, face recovery, color correction, or contrast adjustment. Upscaling specifically increases spatial dimensions. A noisy 1080p clip may benefit more from moderate denoising and deblur at 1080p than from an aggressive 4K enlargement.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Why frame interpolation is a separate operation
Frame interpolation generates intermediate frames to increase frame rate, such as converting 24 or 30 frames per second to 60 frames per second. Frame interpolation does not increase spatial resolution. Interpolation can produce motion warping or duplicated objects even when an upscaler improves stationary detail, so use interpolation only for a deliberate delivery or motion goal.
What is creative upscaling?
Creative upscaling prioritizes a visually attractive result rather than strict preservation of the source. Topaz describes Astra 2 as a creative video-upscaling model intended to add visual detail and complexity to AI-generated footage. That approach may suit generated or heavily degraded content, but it is a poor default for historical records, evidence, scientific footage, or identity-sensitive material.
Which video sources benefit most from AI upscaling?
AI upscaling is most defensible when the source contains recoverable structure: clean 480p or 720p video with reasonable bitrate, stable film scans, clear animation line art, slightly soft camera footage, or moderately noisy older material.
AI upscaling is less reliable when the source has extremely heavy compression, tiny blurry faces, severe motion blur, repeated re-encoding, crushed shadows, clipped highlights, severe frame drops, or corrupted frames. A model can create a plausible-looking result from such footage, but plausibility is not proof of accuracy.
| Source | Priority | Risk to watch |
|---|---|---|
| VHS or broadcast | Determine field order, deinterlace, denoise, stabilize, and check cadence | Combing, field-order errors, and amplified tape noise |
| DVD or SD film | Remove compression distractions while preserving deliberate grain | Waxy texture, ringing, and excessive grain removal |
| 720p web video | Try a modest 2× enlargement and artifact suppression | Sharpened blocking and mosquito noise |
| 1080p footage | Use mild enhancement or upscale to 4K only when delivery requires UHD | Overprocessing footage that was already sufficiently detailed |
| Anime or animation | Use a line-preserving animation model | Softened outlines, broken text, and unstable repeating patterns |
| AI-generated video | Consider a creative model if generated detail is acceptable | Further changes to faces, objects, and temporal consistency |
| Screen recording | Prioritize exact text and interface shapes | Hallucinated or misspelled letters and logos |
| Archival evidence | Use conservative enhancement and preserve the untouched master | Invented detail being mistaken for identification or proof |
How much should you upscale: 2×, 4K, or 8K?
Choose the smallest enlargement that meets the display or delivery requirement. A 2× upscale is a sensible starting point for reasonably clean footage; 4K output makes sense when the source is already HD or a UHD delivery specification requires it. SD-to-4K is an aggressive reconstruction task, not a guaranteed restoration.
Do not upscale repeatedly. Make one controlled enlargement from the best available master, preserve the original, and compare the output at 100% viewing scale and on the final display. A larger file can look worse if the model invents texture or if the final export uses an inadequate bitrate.
DaVinci Resolve’s documented Super Scale controls include 2×, 3×, and 4× options, including enhanced modes in the Resolve 20 New Features Guide. Menu labels and availability can change between Resolve versions, so verify the controls in the installed release.

Topaz Video: best dedicated desktop option?
Topaz Video is the strongest starting point for users who want a dedicated local video-enhancement application rather than a complete non-linear editor. Its documented models include Proteus, Artemis, Nyx, Rhea, Gaia, Theia, Apollo, Chronos, Aion, and others for enhancement, denoising, upscaling, deblur, stabilization, and frame interpolation. The Topaz model documentation describes Proteus as general-purpose enhancement and upscaling, Artemis as denoise and sharpen, Nyx as denoising, Rhea as advanced 4× upscaling, and Gaia as suitable for computer-generated and animation-oriented footage.
Topaz Video is a good fit for old family videos, soft camera footage, noisy clips, and users who want to compare specialized models without assembling a workflow from separate tools. Topaz Video is a poor fit for occasional simple resizing, users without suitable hardware, or projects where a generated facial detail could be mistaken for fact.
What does Topaz Video cost?
On the Topaz pricing page checked August 16, 2026, in the US-facing display, Topaz Video was listed at $59 per month. The same page displayed Topaz Studio at $69 per month or $399 billed annually in the displayed annual option. The displayed Topaz Video plan included unlimited local rendering and 25 monthly video cloud credits; Topaz Studio included 300 monthly video cloud credits. Monthly cloud credits expire at the end of the month and do not roll over. Prices, promotions, plan terms, and commercial-use rights can change, so verify the current Topaz pricing and plan terms before purchase.
The pricing page displayed limited-commercial-use language for some plans and full commercial use for higher tiers. A creator should check the exact plan’s current commercial-use wording rather than assuming that every subscription has identical rights.
Can Topaz Video run inside Resolve?
Topaz Video provides plugins for Adobe After Effects and DaVinci Resolve Studio, but the Resolve plugin requires the paid Studio edition. The free version of Resolve will not load or run the plugin. According to the current Topaz plugin documentation, only Enhancement and Motion Deblur models are available through the Resolve plugin, plugin models run at 1× scale, and the main Topaz application is required for activation.
That limitation matters: installing the plugin does not expose every Topaz model or every scaling mode inside Resolve. Use the main Topaz application when you need its broader model selection or enlargement controls.
How should you choose a Topaz model?
Start with the least aggressive model that solves the visible problem. Use general enhancement for mildly soft footage, denoising for noisy material, animation-oriented options for line art, and advanced enlargement only after comparing a short sample. Topaz warns in its enhancement documentation that small faces can become distorted when a model interprets very limited pixel data.
DaVinci Resolve Studio: best for an existing editing workflow?
DaVinci Resolve Studio is the better choice when upscaling is one stage in a larger post-production project. Blackmagic’s current product pages show DaVinci Resolve 21 and DaVinci Resolve Studio 21, with Studio adding the DaVinci Neural Engine and Super Scale alongside broader professional format and finishing capabilities.
The US product page checked August 16, 2026, listed DaVinci Resolve Studio 21 at $295. The free edition remains a complete editor, but Studio-only AI features such as Super Scale are not included in the free version. See Blackmagic’s current Resolve product and pricing page for regional availability and current terms.
Resolve Studio can be economically sensible for someone who also needs editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, audio work, masking, and delivery. Resolve can be excessive for a user who only wants to drop one short clip into a simple enhancer and export it.

Is Video2X the best free AI video upscaler?
Video2X is the strongest free and open-source route for technically comfortable users who want machine-learning video super-resolution and frame interpolation without buying a commercial application. The official Video2X repository identifies support for Anime4K, Real-ESRGAN, Real-CUGAN, and RIFE, with Windows and Linux support plus installers, Linux packages, AppImage, containers, and Google Colab workflows.
The project is licensed under AGPL-3.0, but the project license does not automatically settle the licensing status of every included model or dependency. Commercial users should inspect the repository and the licenses of the models used in a production workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor precompiled binaries, Video2X lists an AVX2-capable CPU and a Vulkan-capable GPU as requirements. The listed baseline examples include Intel Haswell or newer, AMD Excavator or newer, and older NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPUs that support Vulkan. Hardware support and release availability can change; check the Video2X Releases page before installation.
Video2X is attractive for anime, experimentation, and users comfortable with drivers, model selection, command-line or container workflows, and troubleshooting. Video2X is not a frictionless equivalent to a commercial desktop application, and free cloud compute through Google Colab is not a guaranteed production service.
What is Adobe Firefly Video Upscaler?
Adobe Firefly Video Upscaler is a browser-based cloud option that runs in the Firefly web app or Firefly Boards and is powered by Topaz Astra, according to Adobe’s official feature page. The workflow is convenient for short clips and users without a capable local GPU.
Cloud processing also means uploading the footage. Large files can take time to transfer, and account, credit, availability, privacy, retention, and commercial-use rules may apply. The available research did not establish a reliable standalone US price for the specific upscaling feature, so do not assume that a general Firefly plan price equals the cost of a particular video upscale. Check the terms presented in Firefly at the time of use.
Firefly is a reasonable quick-experiment option. Firefly is a weaker fit for confidential family archives, many hours of footage, repeated batch work, or anyone who needs complete local control.
How do you upscale video correctly?
A careful workflow prevents the most damaging errors: processing the wrong source, enlarging interlaced fields, applying too much sharpening, changing frame rate unnecessarily, and compressing away the improvement during export.
- Preserve the original. Work from a copy and never overwrite the source. Record the original resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, interlacing status, codec, and audio format.
- Inspect the source. Identify whether the footage is live action, animation, screen capture, or AI-generated. Note compression blocks, grain, noise, blur, shake, face size, frame cadence, and exposure problems.
- Select representative samples. Include a face close-up, moving subject, fine texture or foliage, dark or noisy scene, title or subtitle, screen-recorded region, and fast-motion section when those elements exist.
- Compare a conventional resize first. A basic resize establishes whether AI processing is genuinely improving the clip or merely adding sharpness and texture.
- Start conservatively. Test enhancement at the original scale or a 2× enlargement before trying a stronger model or 4K output.
- Handle interlacing. Determine whether VHS, DVD, television, or broadcast footage is interlaced. Deinterlace before final enlargement unless the selected application has a verified integrated workflow. Inspect moving edges for combing and field-order errors.
- Separate denoising from sharpening. Moderate denoising can remove genuine grain, while sharpening can create halos, ringing, and emphasized compression blocks. Inspect hair, skin, text, fine lines, grain, flat colors, and block boundaries.
- Inspect faces frame by frame and in motion. Face recovery can make a face look clearer while changing identity, expression, or small background faces. Do not describe an AI-generated face as reliable facial restoration.
- Use interpolation only when necessary. Preserve the original frame rate unless a delivery or creative goal requires a change. Check hands, hair, fences, reflections, fast pans, crossing objects, and cuts.
- Export a high-quality intermediate. For further editing, prefer a high-quality intermediate instead of repeatedly encoding H.264 or H.265. Preserve audio synchronization and match the project’s color-management and gamma settings.
- Review the finished file. Compare the original, conventional resize, AI-enhanced output, and stronger test at 100% pixel scale, normal viewing distance, and on the final delivery device.
What settings work for different types of footage?
VHS, DVD, and interlaced television footage
Determine whether the source is interlaced before upscaling. Deinterlacing should normally happen before final enlargement, because enlarging interlaced fields can preserve combing and field-order problems. Use moderate denoising and stabilization where necessary, but do not remove all grain automatically; tape noise, film grain, and genuine texture are different problems.

720p and 1080p web footage
Begin with a 2× test or mild enhancement. Repeatedly re-encoded downloads may contain blocking and mosquito noise that a model interprets as texture. Choose 4K output when the delivery specification requires UHD or when the source has enough structure to withstand the enlargement, not simply because 4K sounds better.

Anime and animation
Use models designed for line art when possible. Animation can benefit from Video2X workflows using Anime4K, Real-ESRGAN, or Real-CUGAN, or from a suitable animation-oriented model in a commercial application. Check outlines, lettering, repeated patterns, and flat-color boundaries for shimmering or broken shapes.
Faces and portraits
Use conservative enhancement and inspect identity-sensitive areas closely. A face-recovery model is estimating features from limited pixels; a sharper-looking face can be less faithful to the person in the source.
Screen recordings, subtitles, and logos
Judge exact lettering rather than apparent crispness. AI models can alter characters, UI elements, and logos. If text must remain exact, retain the original recording or recreate the text separately instead of trusting a generated upscale.
Sports and fast action
Prioritize motion handling and temporal consistency. Test wheels, limbs, balls, thin poles, fences, reflections, and fast pans. Frame interpolation deserves a separate test because motion artifacts can be more distracting than the original low frame rate.

AI-generated footage
A creative model may be appropriate when the goal is visual enhancement rather than source fidelity. Topaz’s Astra 2 is specifically described as a creative model for adding detail and complexity to AI-generated footage, so expect a different trade-off from conservative archival restoration.
What hardware does AI video upscaling require?
Hardware requirements are product- and model-specific, so no universal minimum GPU or render-speed promise is reliable. A modern discrete GPU generally improves processing speed, while VRAM can limit output resolution, model selection, tile size, or concurrent processing.
Apple Silicon, integrated graphics, NVIDIA GPUs, and AMD GPUs do not deliver interchangeable performance. Drivers, codec decoding, source duration, frame rate, output resolution, model complexity, and encoding settings also affect processing time. The most computationally expensive model is not automatically the most faithful model.
Previewing a short representative clip on the actual computer is more useful than relying on a generic hardware ranking. Long videos can require substantial disk space for source files, temporary data, intermediates, and final exports.

What problems can AI upscaling create?
- Hallucinated detail: False texture, facial features, text, or objects may look convincing but are not verified source information.
- Plastic skin: Aggressive denoising and face recovery can remove natural skin texture.
- Oversharpening: Halos, ringing, crispy foliage, and emphasized compression blocks often indicate excessive sharpening.
- Temporal flicker: Detail or facial features may shimmer because the model makes different decisions from frame to frame.
- Motion warping: Interpolation or enhancement may bend fingers, wheels, thin poles, fences, reflections, or fast-moving objects.
- Grain loss: Heavy denoising can produce a waxy result and remove meaningful film texture.
- Interlacing mistakes: Combing and field-order problems remain visible if interlaced footage is enlarged incorrectly.
- Text corruption: Subtitles, screen text, and logos may become sharper-looking but incorrect.
- Aspect-ratio errors: Upscaling does not correct non-square pixels, letterboxing, cropping, anamorphic footage, or stretched images.
- Codec damage: A good upscale can be undermined by a low-bitrate export or repeated transcoding.
- Audio-sync problems: Changing frame rate or mishandling variable-frame-rate footage can separate audio from video.
For historical, legal, investigative, scientific, or evidentiary work, preserve the original and document every processing step. An AI-enhanced frame should be labeled as enhanced, not treated as definitive proof that an indistinct face, object, or word existed in the source.
Is paid AI video upscaling software worth it?
Paid software is worth considering when the user processes footage regularly, needs specialized restoration models, values a supported workflow, or already owns hardware capable of local rendering. Paid software is less compelling for one short, clean clip that only needs resizing.
Compare the expected hours of footage, frequency of use, local-rendering rights after cancellation, cloud-credit allowances, upgrade policy, commercial-use restrictions, supported computers, and whether a complete editor is also needed. A subscription is not automatically cheaper than a one-time purchase, and a one-time purchase is not automatically cheaper if the user needs frequent upgrades or specialized models.
| Situation | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| One short, clean clip | Try existing editing software or a basic resize before buying a dedicated product |
| Frequent restoration of family or creator footage | Consider Topaz Video if dedicated local model experimentation is the priority |
| Editing, grading, audio, effects, and upscaling together | Consider DaVinci Resolve Studio |
| No software budget and strong technical comfort | Try Video2X after checking hardware and model licenses |
| Short clip, no capable GPU, convenience first | Consider Adobe Firefly Video Upscaler after reviewing upload and plan terms |
| Archival or evidentiary footage | Choose conservative processing, preserve the master, and document the result rather than chasing maximum sharpness |
How should you test an AI video upscaler?
Use the same source clip, target resolution, frame rate, export codec, and bitrate when comparing applications. Test separate samples for live action, animation, faces, text, noise, and motion instead of judging a tool from a single easy scene.
Compare the original, a conventional resize, a conservative AI pass, and a stronger AI pass. Watch the result in motion as well as paused. Look for texture shimmer, face changes, halos, broken lettering, motion warping, and loss of grain. Vendor demonstrations can illustrate a product’s workflow, but they are not independent quality measurements.
Keep the untouched source and the test outputs with clear filenames. A repeatable test makes it easier to distinguish a genuinely useful model from an attractive still frame that fails during playback.
Bottom line
Start with Topaz Video for a dedicated local restoration workflow, DaVinci Resolve Studio when upscaling belongs inside a full editing and finishing environment, Video2X when free and open-source flexibility matters more than convenience, and Adobe Firefly when browser access is worth uploading the footage.
Regardless of the application, begin with the best source, deinterlace interlaced material, test short representative clips, upscale once, preserve the original, and favor the least aggressive result that improves the final viewing experience. AI can make low-resolution video more usable; AI cannot guarantee that newly generated detail is real.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI upscale 480p video to 4K?
AI video upscaling software can output 480p footage at 4K dimensions, but SD-to-4K is an aggressive reconstruction task rather than guaranteed recovery of real 4K detail. Test a short clip and compare the result for faces, text, noise, and motion before processing the full video.
Does AI video upscaling really add detail?
AI video upscaling can estimate plausible edges, textures, and facial structure that make enlarged footage look more detailed, but estimated detail is not necessarily faithful to the source. AI may hallucinate texture, alter faces, sharpen compression noise, or create halos.
Should I deinterlace VHS before upscaling?
VHS and other interlaced footage should normally be deinterlaced before final enlargement unless the selected application has a verified integrated workflow. Upscaling interlaced fields incorrectly can preserve combing and field-order artifacts.
