Children who grow up with AI will probably become technologists who are comfortable directing, checking and adapting intelligent tools—but their long-term advantage will depend less on early familiarity with a chatbot than on how well they can reason through unfamiliar problems. Dana Woods, a technology integration specialist at Bemidji Public Schools in Minnesota, argues that computational thinking—breaking complex work into parts, spotting patterns, testing whether they transfer and explaining the result—will remain valuable even as software changes. His view comes from classroom practice and an interview, not a workforce survey or a 15-year forecast. The practical implication is clear: use AI to extend a learner’s thinking, while continuing to teach the underlying thinking itself.

What does “AI native” mean for a future technologist?

An AI native is a young person who encounters systems that generate text, images, code or explanations as a normal part of school and daily life. The label describes an environment, not a guaranteed skill level. A student may know how to ask an AI system for an answer without knowing how to judge its accuracy, protect private information or solve the problem independently.

In an August 31, 2026 TechChannel interview, Woods discusses children who may enter the workforce roughly 15 years from now. He compares the uncertainty to the rapid change in consumer technology: no one can reliably specify what AI products will look like that far ahead. His comments are an informed practitioner’s perspective, rather than a representative sample of students or a labor-market projection.

What advantages could AI-native students bring to technology work?

The strongest potential advantage is fluency with experimentation. Students who regularly encounter generative systems may be less intimidated by unfamiliar interfaces, more willing to iterate and quicker to imagine several ways to approach a task. Those are possibilities, not measured outcomes; Woods reports observations from his school context, not national usage rates.

Faster tool adaptation

When a tool changes its interface or adds a new capability, a student accustomed to learning through interaction may try examples, inspect the response and adjust the request instead of waiting for a formal manual. In a workplace, that habit could shorten the time needed to learn a new development environment, analysis platform or documentation system.

More natural collaboration with software

AI can act as a brainstorming partner, explainer or debugging assistant. A future technologist may spend less time memorizing every command and more time deciding what outcome is needed, supplying constraints and reviewing the result. That shift makes specification, testing and communication more important, not less.

Comfort crossing disciplinary boundaries

Generative tools can translate ideas between domains—for example, turning a policy description into a data schema or a news question into a list of variables to investigate. Woods says computational thinking applies beyond programming, including journalism. Students who practice explaining a problem to both people and machines may be able to move between technical and nontechnical teams.

What disadvantages might appear if AI supplies answers too easily?

The main risk is confusing a polished response with understanding. If a system completes the decomposition, research or code generation for a learner, the learner may submit correct-looking work without being able to explain assumptions, detect an error or reproduce the method later.

Shallow verification

Generated output can contain incorrect facts, insecure code, hidden bias or references that do not exist. A student who has not practiced checking sources and edge cases may accept the first plausible answer. In professional settings, that can turn a small unnoticed error into a faulty product or decision.

Weaker persistence

Woods quotes the principle, “I think there’s just going to be no way around hard work.” Difficult problems often require several failed attempts before the structure becomes clear. If learners outsource every frustrating step, they may lose the persistence needed for debugging, investigation and design.

Privacy and dependence

Students can accidentally paste personal information, unpublished schoolwork or confidential client data into a service. They may also become dependent on one vendor’s interface or model behavior. Tool familiarity is useful, but it is fragile if the learner cannot transfer the underlying method to a different system or work offline.

Is AI better used as a tutor or as an answer machine?

For learning, an AI system is more defensible when it prompts reasoning, gives graduated hints and asks the student to explain a step rather than displaying a finished answer. Woods describes a configured mathematics assistant that was instructed not to provide the answer and instead behave more like a tutor. That design illustrates a principle, not evidence that one configuration works for every age or subject.

Use pattern What the learner does What the teacher can evaluate Main risk
Answer machine Copies or lightly edits a completed solution Mostly the final product Illusion of mastery; errors may go unnoticed
Tutor or coach States an attempt, responds to questions and revises the work Reasoning, misconceptions and revision history Hints can still be wrong or too leading
Critic or simulator Tests a claim, code sample or design against cases Quality of tests and interpretation Students may trust the critique without independent checks

A productive classroom interaction makes the student’s thinking visible. The prompt might require the system to ask one question at a time, request the learner’s next step, identify an assumption to test and withhold a final solution until the learner has shown an attempt. Teachers still need to review the tool’s behavior and the student’s work; a “tutor” label does not guarantee sound pedagogy.

Why does computational thinking remain important when AI can write code?

Woods calls computational thinking a durable set of skills for programmers. He defines it as breaking a large problem into manageable parts, looking for patterns, considering whether those patterns apply in other contexts and communicating the solution. These habits help a person decide what to ask an AI system, evaluate its output and redesign the approach when the first attempt fails.

Decomposition

Start by separating a broad goal into tasks with observable results. “Build a school attendance dashboard” becomes questions about data sources, definitions, permissions, calculations, display and maintenance. AI can draft components, but a human must decide whether the parts cover the real problem and whether the boundaries are sensible.

Pattern recognition

Look for repeated structures, exceptions and relationships. A learner might notice that several bugs arise from the same input assumption or that a reporting task repeats a common data transformation. Recognizing the pattern helps the student request a reusable function or a better test instead of patching symptoms one by one.

Generalization

Ask whether a solution works beyond the example that inspired it. A model answer that handles one equation, file format or user group may fail on negative numbers, missing values or accessibility needs. Generalization turns a one-off demonstration into a reliable method.

Communication

Explain the problem, constraints, evidence and trade-offs to another person. Clear specifications improve AI prompts, code reviews and collaboration with subject experts. Woods emphasizes that these communication habits matter in fields such as journalism as well as programming.

Should schools still teach coding if AI can generate programs?

Yes, if coding is taught as a way to practice problem-solving and understand how software behaves, rather than only as production of syntax. Woods supports continuing coding instruction for that reason. He does not claim that one curriculum or coding platform is universally best.

  • Read before writing: have students trace a short program, predict its output and identify an assumption.
  • Write and test: require a small implementation plus test cases, including an edge case the AI did not supply.
  • Explain changes: ask students to annotate generated code, remove unnecessary sections and justify each modification.
  • Compare approaches: let teams evaluate two solutions for clarity, efficiency, accessibility and maintainability.
  • Debug deliberately: present a plausible but flawed program and grade the diagnosis, not just the corrected version.

This approach keeps the educational value even when an assistant drafts boilerplate. It also prepares students for a workplace where reviewing, securing and maintaining code can matter as much as producing the first version.

What will technologists who grow up with AI actually do in 15 years?

No reliable answer can be given today. The interview contains no measured workforce forecast, adoption statistic or quantified learning outcome. Woods expects students to adapt, but presents that optimism as an opinion shaped by the pace of technological change.

A cautious way to think about the future is to separate stable responsibilities from replaceable interfaces:

At what age should children begin using AI?

Woods suggests around age 13 as a reasonable starting point, linking that judgment to developing abstract thinking and common online-safety norms. It is not a universal medical, legal or school-policy rule. Families and schools must follow the terms, privacy practices and age requirements that apply in their jurisdiction and to the specific service.

Before independent use

  • Practice identifying personal, sensitive and confidential information that should not be entered.
  • Show how to cross-check an answer with a trusted textbook, teacher or primary source.
  • Use shared demonstrations so an adult can model uncertainty, citation and correction.
  • Set a purpose for each session and require the learner to keep a brief record of prompts, changes and checks.

When a student begins using a system directly

Start with low-stakes tasks such as generating practice questions or alternative explanations. Keep the student responsible for the final reasoning, and review account settings, data retention and whether conversations are used for training. Age alone does not establish readiness; the student’s ability to protect privacy and explain the result matters more.

How can educators design assignments that preserve learning?

Assignments should assess decisions and evidence that a generic generated response cannot easily conceal. The goal is not to ban every tool, but to make the learner’s process part of the work.

  1. Define the outcome and constraints. State the audience, allowed sources, privacy limits and what a successful result must do.
  2. Require an initial attempt. Collect a sketch, hypothesis, outline or small code sample before AI assistance.
  3. Allow targeted assistance. Permit brainstorming, hints or critique, while specifying whether full text or code generation is prohibited.
  4. Capture verification. Ask for test cases, source checks, calculations or a comparison of the tool’s suggestions.
  5. Assess explanation. Use a short oral defense, screen recording, annotated draft or reflection that connects choices to evidence.
  6. Include an unfamiliar variation. Change the data, audience or constraints so students must transfer the method rather than repeat a memorized answer.

Teachers should also explain what assistance is permitted and how it will be acknowledged. Clear rules reduce accidental misconduct and make a student’s use of AI visible enough to discuss.

How should parents help an AI-native learner at home?

Parents can focus on habits that remain useful across products: curiosity, skepticism, persistence and clear explanation. Ask the child to predict an answer before consulting a tool, then compare the prediction with the output and investigate any difference.

These practices reinforce Woods’s central point: the tool may change, but the ability to reason through a complex problem remains useful.

What evidence supports this outlook—and what remains unknown?

The evidence here is a practitioner interview with Woods, published by TechChannel on August 31, 2026. It records his observations of teachers using AI for planning and lesson development, and students cautiously experimenting with AI for schoolwork. It does not establish how common those practices are, whether they improve learning, or how employers will use AI in the future.

That distinction matters when making policy. A school can pilot a tutor-style interaction, collect student work and review errors without claiming that the approach has been proven everywhere. It can teach computational thinking as a durable foundation while revisiting examples, tools and safeguards as technology evolves. The most defensible promise to students is not a particular job title; it is preparation to understand, question and improve whatever systems they encounter.

What should a school’s AI-readiness checklist include?

A practical checklist turns broad enthusiasm or fear into observable safeguards and learning goals.

  • Purpose: each use has a stated learning objective, not just faster completion.
  • Transparency: students know when AI is allowed, restricted or required, and how to disclose assistance.
  • Verification: assignments include tests, source checks or demonstrations of reasoning.
  • Privacy: staff and students know what information may be entered and who can access stored conversations.
  • Accessibility: alternatives exist for learners who cannot or should not use a particular service.
  • Review: teachers monitor errors, bias and overreliance, then adjust prompts and assessment.
  • Transfer: students periodically solve a related problem without the assistant to demonstrate independent understanding.

Used this way, AI becomes one instrument in a broader learning environment rather than a substitute for the habits that make technologists dependable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will AI-native students need computer-science degrees to work with intelligent systems?

Not every role will require the same credential, and the interview does not predict future hiring standards. Whatever the pathway, candidates will benefit from being able to define problems, test outputs, communicate trade-offs and learn new tools; formal study is one way, not the only way, to build those abilities.

How can a teacher tell whether a student understands AI-generated code?

Ask the student to predict behavior on a new input, identify one limitation and make a small change without assistance. A brief live explanation or debugging exercise often reveals understanding more reliably than style-based AI detectors.

What privacy questions should families ask before a child uses an AI service?

Check the minimum age, whether conversations are retained, whether they are used to improve models, how deletion works and whether the provider offers an education-specific data agreement. Avoid entering names, health details, passwords, location data or unpublished work unless the school has explicitly approved that handling.

Can computational thinking help students who never plan to become programmers?

Yes. Breaking a complex task into parts, spotting recurring structures, testing whether an idea generalizes and explaining a conclusion can support reporting, design, science, public service and everyday decision-making. The value comes from the reasoning process, not from writing a particular programming language.
