When a camera’s analytics recognize a person, vehicle, object, or event and send an alarm to an operator, AI is already part of physical security. That does not mean every camera system uses AI, that every alert is correct, or that software can replace a human security decision. The practical question is what a particular system is designed to detect, where it processes video, and how people verify and govern its results.

How AI is used in physical security

One established application is video analytics: software analyzes camera footage to classify people, vehicles, objects, or events and generate alerts for an operator. The alert can help direct attention to a relevant moment or area; it is not, by itself, proof that an incident occurred or that a person poses a threat. The Security Industry Association (SIA) describes these functions in its 2025 video surveillance privacy code.

AI applications can also support operational tasks beyond conventional security alarms. SIA’s April 2025 Technology Insights issue describes visual AI examples including occupancy management and safety-compliance monitoring. These are industry-described use cases, not independent evidence that a system will perform reliably in a particular building.

It is useful to distinguish among what a system does:

  • Detection and classification: Flagging a person, vehicle, object, or defined event in video.
  • Identification: Attempting to determine who a person is, which raises different privacy and governance questions from simply detecting a person.
  • Prediction: Inferring what a person might do. Such an inference should not be treated as an established fact about intent.
  • Automated action: Triggering a consequential response without an operator first reviewing the result. Buyers should establish explicitly whether this is possible and what safeguards apply.

These distinctions matter because “AI camera” is not a precise description of a capability. Ask which task the product performs and what happens after it produces a result.

Where the video is processed

AI video analytics may run on a camera or other device, on a dedicated server, in the cloud, or across a hybrid arrangement. SIA’s physical-security AI overview identifies these deployment patterns but does not establish one as universally best. The right fit depends on the installation, data flows, operational needs, and controls.

Deployment pattern What to verify Practical consideration
On-device Which analysis runs on the camera or device, and whether video or derived data is sent elsewhere. “On-device” should not be assumed to mean that no information leaves the site; confirm the actual data flow.
Dedicated server Where the server is hosted, who administers it, and which systems or users can access its data. Include the server’s maintenance, security, and integration requirements in the deployment plan.
Cloud What video and metadata are uploaded, where they are retained, who can access them, and how long they remain available. Review the vendor’s data-handling and security practices rather than relying on the deployment label alone.
Hybrid Which functions run locally and which depend on remote services, including what happens if connectivity is interrupted. Map every processing and transfer step so that responsibilities and failure behavior are understood.

For any pattern, ask the vendor to describe the full path from camera input through analysis, alerting, storage, access, and deletion. This makes it easier to assess privacy, cybersecurity, reliability, and compatibility together.

What is established about accuracy and adoption

The available evidence establishes that AI video analytics are used for detection and alerting; it does not establish a single reliable accuracy figure for physical-security AI generally. Performance depends on the specific task and system, and a result measured in one setting should not be assumed to transfer to another. Lighting, camera position, scene conditions, and operational procedures are among the factors buyers should consider when asking for evidence relevant to their sites.

  • Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).

There is likewise no defensible market-wide adoption percentage in the sources cited here. GAO’s 2025 review found that federal critical-infrastructure sector assessments included AI use cases such as physical surveillance, while also identifying gaps in the assessments’ treatment of risk. That is a finding about the federal assessments GAO reviewed—not proof that every deployment is unsafe or that every organization has adopted AI.

For procurement, request performance evidence tied to the intended task and operating conditions. Ask how the vendor defines a correct detection, how it evaluates false alerts and missed events, and whether results come from conditions comparable to the organization’s cameras and locations. If the vendor cannot explain the test and its limits, a headline accuracy claim is not enough to support a decision.

Privacy, cybersecurity, and human oversight

Video analytics can make surveillance more capable, and that capability can create privacy risks even when a system is intended for security. NIST’s page on Cybersecurity, Privacy, and AI, updated July 15, 2026, identifies risks including re-identification, the discovery of new insights about people, and amplified behavioral tracking and surveillance. The relevant question is not only whether footage is recorded, but what a system can infer from it, who can use those inferences, and for what purpose.

SIA’s 2025 video surveillance privacy code is specifically intended to guide privacy practices for video surveillance. In practice, an organization should define legitimate uses, access rules, retention practices, and safeguards against misuse before expanding analytics. It should also consider whether the system’s functions exceed what is needed for the stated purpose.

Cybersecurity and oversight are part of the same decision. In its November 14, 2024 announcement of a framework for critical-infrastructure AI, the Department of Homeland Security recommended strong privacy practices, evaluations for bias, failure modes, and vulnerabilities, and independent assessments for models presenting heightened risks to critical infrastructure and consumers. For a security installation, establish who reviews an alert, what evidence they see, and what actions require human approval. Do not let an unverified detection silently become a consequential decision.

Questions to ask an AI security vendor

SIA’s 2025 enterprise vendor-evaluation report includes a questionnaire intended to help buyers examine AI claims. Adapt those questions to the site and the decision the system will support:

  • Task: What specific AI method or capability is used, and is the system detecting, classifying, identifying, predicting, or triggering an action?
  • Evidence: How is performance tested? What counts as a correct result, and how are false alerts, missed events, bias, and failure modes evaluated under conditions relevant to this installation?
  • Data: What video, metadata, or other data sources are used? Where are they processed, transferred, and retained, and who can access them?
  • Security: What cybersecurity controls protect the system and its data? What vulnerability-management and incident-response processes are in place?
  • Privacy and compliance: What privacy practices and compliance evidence can the vendor provide, and what controls help prevent data or analytics from being used beyond the authorized purpose?
  • Human review: Which alerts require an operator to review the underlying evidence before anyone acts? Can the system take an action automatically, and can that behavior be restricted?
  • Compatibility: Which specific cameras, recorders, analytics software, and access-control systems are supported together? Ask for confirmation for the exact models and versions in the proposed installation.
  • Lifecycle: How are software updates, support, configuration changes, and end-of-support handled? Who is responsible for maintaining the system over time?

Answers should be specific enough to document. For example, “uses secure cloud AI” does not explain which data leaves the premises, who can access it, or how long it is retained.

How to decide whether AI belongs in a security system

  1. Define the operational need. State the event or condition staff need to notice and what an appropriate response should be. Avoid adopting a tool simply because it is labeled AI.
  2. Choose the narrowest useful capability. Decide whether detection or classification is sufficient, rather than assuming identification, prediction, or automated action is necessary.
  3. Map the data and deployment. Identify where analysis happens, what information moves between devices and services, who can access it, and how long it is kept.
  4. Evaluate evidence in context. Require testing information relevant to the intended site and operating conditions, along with explanations of known failure modes and the process for investigating poor results.
  5. Set governance and response rules. Specify who reviews alerts, what actions require human approval, how access is audited, and how privacy or security incidents are handled.
  6. Confirm the complete installation works together. Verify compatibility among the actual cameras, recorders, analytics components, and any systems receiving alerts; general product descriptions do not establish compatibility for a particular installation.

AI can help security staff focus on selected video events, but usefulness depends on a clear task, evidence suited to the site, secure and proportionate data practices, and a defined human response. Those conditions—not the presence of an AI label—determine whether the technology is appropriate.
