Not across the industry—not on the evidence currently available. The claim that new bankers will start by managing AI agents comes from a forecast by Goldman Sachs executive Kevin Sneader, reported by TechRadar, which says his remarks were shared via Bloomberg. Banks are building agentic-AI capabilities and describing workflows that may shift junior work toward checking and directing AI outputs, but that does not establish a sector-wide staffing change or show that entry-level banking jobs have already disappeared.

What did the Goldman Sachs executive predict?

Kevin Sneader, a Goldman Sachs executive, was quoted as saying: “When our young folks now start work, they’re managing agents.” He added: “They have to make the most of this virtual army that they’ve now got.” Those remarks describe his view of how work may change; they are not a published Goldman Sachs staffing policy or proof that all new bankers currently supervise AI agents.

The distinction matters: a prediction about the shape of future work is not the same as an observed change in hiring or headcount. The available evidence supports a more limited conclusion: banks are investing in AI, and some describe workflows in which agents could handle preparation and routine tasks while people review results and make decisions. Whether that reduces, reshapes, or increases the number of junior roles overall remains uncertain.

What might managing an AI agent mean in a bank?

“Managing agents” is not a single standardized banking job description in the cited material. It could describe a banker defining a task, supplying context, checking an agent’s work, investigating exceptions, and deciding what to do with its output. That interpretation follows from the workflow examples banks describe; it should not be mistaken for a universal role definition.

Research and client preparation

Citi’s description of its agent platform Arc gives a wealth-management example: agents could gather portfolio data, analyze market trends, and model scenarios so a banker can spend more time on client relationships. Citi says the banker’s role evolves from “coordinator to architect and advisor.” That is the bank’s intended direction, not evidence that every such task is already automated across its business. Citi says Arc will initially be used by developers to build agents for specific, well-defined use cases, with monitoring and auditability.

Fraud, risk, and operational work

Agentic and other AI uses are not limited to investment-banking analysis. Lloyds Banking Group describes payment-fraud agents that analyze payments in real time to help identify suspected scams before funds leave a customer’s account. HSBC lists uses including fraud detection, cybersecurity, transaction monitoring, customer service, risk assessment, credit analysis, and internal productivity. These are bank-specific disclosures, not proof that every listed task is performed by agents or that all banks use AI in the same way.

What evidence shows banks are changing roles?

Announcements show that banks are building capabilities and recruiting specialists, but those jobs should not be conflated with junior bankers supervising agents.

  • Lloyds Banking Group: In 2026, it said it planned to recruit for almost 300 agentic-AI-related roles, including Data & AI Scientists, Engineers, Responsible AI specialists, and AI Product Managers. It also said more than 1,000 roles were planned in 2026 to support its AI build-out, including internal and external talent, and that more than 700 colleagues were already shaping use cases. These figures describe a broad AI build-out, not a count of entry-level bankers managing agents.
  • HSBC: The bank reports more than 600 AI use cases in operation across areas including fraud detection and customer service. It also says more than 20,000 developers use coding assistants and reports a 15% efficiency improvement in time spent coding. These are HSBC’s own disclosures, not independent measurements of workforce-wide productivity.

Labor-market analysis offers a wider, but not bank-only, perspective. PwC’s 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer reports that AI-user roles accounted for 88% of AI-related roles in Financial Services in 2025, while AI-developer roles made up 12%. The figures come from PwC’s financial-services job-posting analysis; they are not a count of bank employees or proof that agents are creating jobs.

PwC also reports that AI-exposed junior roles were seven times more likely than the least AI-exposed junior roles to demand traditionally senior skills such as leadership and strategic thinking. This is a relative likelihood in PwC’s analysis—not a count of openings, a forecast of employment, or evidence that every junior banking role now requires those skills.

Which skills could matter in AI-assisted banking work?

If agents take on more preparation and routine processing, the human contribution may shift toward setting the right question, interpreting results, and knowing when an answer is incomplete or unsafe to use. PwC’s findings on senior skills are consistent with that possibility, although they do not establish a specific bank’s hiring criteria.

  • Domain knowledge: Understand the client, transaction, product, or risk context well enough to spot an implausible result.
  • Critical review: Check sources, assumptions, calculations, and missing information rather than accepting a confident-sounding answer.
  • Communication: Explain conclusions and uncertainties clearly to colleagues, clients, and control teams.
  • Judgment and escalation: Recognize exceptions, decide when human review is needed, and route issues to the person with authority to act.
  • AI fluency: Use tools effectively while understanding their limits, and document how their outputs informed work.

These are practical implications of the workflows and skills analysis described above, not a published universal qualification list. For people comparing early-career paths, AI-user roles are different from developer roles; workflow or business ownership is different from model engineering; and customer-facing analysis differs from risk and control work. The PwC role shares and Lloyds’ specialist hiring plans describe different categories, so they should not be treated as interchangeable measures of opportunity.

Why oversight remains part of the work

Delegating a task to an agent does not remove the need for accountability. Citi says its agents will be monitored and auditable. Deloitte’s 2026 banking white paper recommends traceable, explainable actions and auditability designed into systems, with humans responsible for approvals, exceptions, and regulatory sign-off. Deloitte is offering industry guidance, not stating a regulator’s binding rule.

HSBC says its AI governance includes review councils, lifecycle management, and mandatory responsible-AI training. Together, these descriptions point to oversight as a design and organizational responsibility—not a burden that should be placed on a junior employee alone. The sources do not establish jurisdiction-specific regulatory requirements for junior bankers supervising agents.

What is still unknown about junior banking jobs?

The cited examples do not establish how many entry-level jobs agents will replace, how many new jobs they will create, or whether the traditional analyst career ladder will change across the sector. Corporate announcements document individual banks’ plans and claims; PwC’s analysis covers Financial Services job postings, not banks alone. None of these sources proves a causal link between agent deployment and overall junior headcount.

For now, the sound reading is that AI may change the tasks expected of some early-career banking employees, with more emphasis on directing tools, evaluating their output, and applying judgment. Sneader’s “managing agents” line is a forecast, not a verified description of the day-to-day job for junior bankers everywhere.
