Put the gateway in the enforcement path for every model call. Authenticate the caller, authorize the tenant and model, validate schemas and budgets, inspect prompts and retrieved content, call the model, inspect its response, and re-authorize every proposed tool action in the execution layer. Use deterministic controls for permissions, schemas, limits and known patterns; add semantic or model-based checks for behavior and content that rules cannot describe reliably. Roll out in detection mode first, measure false positives and latency, then enforce blocking, redaction or approval according to risk.
A gateway is useful because it gives you one policy and telemetry point across applications and providers. It is not a magic prompt-injection barrier: OWASP cautions that input screening is not a security boundary. Attackers can rephrase, encode or hide instructions in retrieved data, so authorization and safe execution must remain outside the model.
What are AI guardrails at the gateway layer?
Gateway guardrails are controls placed on the network or service component that brokers requests between an application and one or more large language models. Instead of trusting each application to implement safety consistently, the gateway becomes a policy enforcement point for identity, data handling, content safety, model use and observability.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA complete request path looks like this:
- The client authenticates to the gateway. The gateway binds the call to a user, tenant, application, audience and task.
- Policy checks decide whether that principal may use the requested model, tools, data sources and token budget.
- Syntax, content type, context size, timeout and rate limits are validated before forwarding.
- Inbound screening examines the user message, conversation history, retrieved documents, web pages, email and tool results as potentially untrusted content.
- The gateway calls the model and receives text, structured data or a proposed tool call.
- Output checks inspect the result for policy violations, sensitive data, unsafe markup and malformed structures.
- The execution service independently authorizes and validates each tool action before it changes data or affects the outside world.
- Decisions, outcomes and latency are logged with privacy controls so operators can detect drift and tune policies.
This separation matters. A model can suggest an action, but a suggestion is data, not an authorization decision. IAM, least privilege, schemas and resource constraints must be enforced by code or infrastructure.

Where should each guardrail run?
Use multiple enforcement points rather than a single prompt filter. The gateway is the common point for model requests, while the application and tool executor provide context-specific controls.
| Point in the flow | Controls | Typical failure it prevents |
|---|---|---|
| Before the model | Authentication, tenant and model authorization, schema checks, rate and token limits, prompt and context screening | Unauthorized use, malformed requests, obvious jailbreaks, oversized or expensive calls |
| After the model | Content, topic, sensitive-information, markup and structured-output checks | Policy-violating text, leaked secrets or PII, unsafe rendering, invalid JSON |
| At every tool boundary | Argument schema validation, user/task authorization, resource constraints, approval gates and separate credentials | Destructive actions, confused-deputy behavior and overbroad access |
| During operations | Decision logs, latency and cost telemetry, drift alerts, sampling and review | Silent bypasses, refusal changes, approval-rate anomalies and policy regressions |
Keep trusted instructions separate from untrusted data. A label such as “document” or “system context” does not create a security boundary; the application must control how data is inserted and what permissions it can influence.
How do you map trust boundaries and data flows?
Start with an inventory before choosing a product. Draw every path by which instructions or data can enter and leave the model.
Identify untrusted inputs
- End-user prompts and uploaded files.
- Conversation history, including messages produced by previous model calls.
- Search results, retrieval-augmented generation passages, web pages and email.
- Tool results, API responses and error messages.
- Content supplied by other tenants or external integrations.
Mark the trusted components
Identify the policy service, identity provider, secrets store, tool executor, approval system and audit pipeline. Decide which component owns each decision. For example, the gateway can decide whether a tenant may request a model, while a document service decides whether that tenant may read a particular record.
Define the consequence of a failure
Classify actions as read-only, reversible write, irreversible write or high-impact decision. A customer-support summary may be allowed after output scanning; deleting an account should require a separate authorization and, where appropriate, human approval. This classification determines whether a violation is blocked, redacted, logged or escalated.
How should the gateway authenticate and authorize requests?
Require an authenticated identity and an explicit audience on every call. Bind the request to the initiating user, tenant, application and task rather than accepting an identity supplied in a prompt or user-controlled header.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use deny-by-default policy
- Allow only registered models and providers for each tenant or application.
- Give separate scopes for reading data, writing data and invoking external side effects.
- Use separate credentials for read and write tools.
- Issue narrow, expiring task grants instead of long-lived, all-purpose tokens.
- Constrain accessible resources, regions and data classifications.
A gateway policy can determine whether a request is eligible to reach a model, but the downstream service must still check authorization when a tool is invoked. This prevents a compromised or confused model from turning one permitted task into access to unrelated records.
AWS identifies IAM, schema validation, Cedar policies and permission boundaries as deterministic controls that belong in this layer. These mechanisms are preferable to instructions such as “only access invoices for this customer,” which a model may misunderstand or ignore.

How do you validate request syntax, budgets and resource use?
Reject malformed or over-budget calls before they consume model capacity. Validation should be deterministic and fast.
| Check | What to enforce | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Content type | Accept only declared media types and reject ambiguous encodings. | Prevents parser differentials and unexpected payloads. |
| JSON or tool schema | Require known fields, types, ranges and enumerations; reject unknown fields where possible. | Stops hidden arguments and malformed tool calls. |
| Model selection | Allow-list model names and provider routes per tenant. | Prevents unapproved models and surprise costs. |
| Context and output size | Set maximum input tokens, retrieved-content volume and output tokens. | Limits denial-of-service risk and spend. |
| Timeouts and concurrency | Set per-call deadlines, queue limits and cancellation behavior. | Protects shared capacity when a provider stalls. |
| Rate and quota | Apply tenant, user, application and endpoint limits. | Contains abuse and noisy neighbors. |
Validate structured output again after generation. A response that looks like JSON may contain extra fields, invalid types or an embedded instruction. Parse it with a strict schema before an application acts on it.
How can you detect prompt injection and unsafe input?
Combine deterministic matching with semantic analysis, and treat both as signals rather than proof of safety. Exact and regular-expression rules are useful for known attack strings, secret formats and prohibited data. They will miss paraphrases, multilingual variants, encodings and instructions hidden in retrieved content.
Deterministic screening
Maintain versioned rules for known jailbreak phrases, credential formats, internal hostnames, prohibited file paths and other high-confidence patterns. Kong’s Prompt Guard evaluates user message content with allow and deny patterns; its semantic guard compares requests with semantic rules. Keep rules scoped to the tenant or application so an engineering assistant can allow technical content that a public chatbot must block.
Semantic and model-based screening
Use classifiers or a separate policy model for intent, topic, indirect injection, sensitive information and unsafe content. These checks can recognize meaning beyond a fixed string, but they add latency and cost and introduce another model that must be secured and monitored. A semantic checker should not receive more sensitive data than necessary, and its decision should not grant permissions.
Inspect retrieved context, not just the user message
An indirect injection may say “ignore previous instructions” inside a web page, support ticket or document. Scan each untrusted source before it is assembled into context, preserve provenance, and pass only the minimum required fields. Even a clean scan cannot make a document trusted; the tool executor still has to enforce permissions.

How should you inspect model responses?
Apply response policies before returning text to a user or passing structured data to another service. Amazon Bedrock Guardrails evaluates both user inputs and model responses and supports content, denied-topic, sensitive-information, word and image policies.
Text and media checks
- Detect prohibited content and denied topics.
- Find personal data, credentials, access tokens and internal identifiers.
- Check links, markup and code for unsafe rendering or unexpected destinations.
- Apply image policies when the model or application handles images.
Structured-output checks
Parse JSON, function calls and action plans against a strict schema. Reject extra properties, invalid values and references to resources outside the authorized task. Do not allow a natural-language explanation attached to a tool call to bypass the parser.

Choose a safe response
For a high-confidence violation, block the response and return a generic explanation that does not disclose detection logic. Redact a field only when removing it cannot change the meaning in a dangerous way. Otherwise route the case to review or return a safe fallback. Store the original only under an approved retention and access policy.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How do you enforce tool permissions outside the model?
Put an execution service between the model and every tool with side effects. The service should receive a typed proposal, not an unrestricted prompt, and make a fresh authorization decision.
- Parse the proposed tool name and arguments against a strict schema.
- Resolve the caller, tenant, task grant and target resource from trusted server-side state.
- Check that the action and resource are permitted for that identity and task.
- Constrain quantities, paths, record ranges, destinations and time windows.
- Use a separate credential whose scope matches the action.
- Require explicit, action-specific approval for destructive or high-impact operations.
- Execute the tool and return only the minimum result needed by the model.
- Log the authorization decision, tool outcome and correlation ID.
Never let the model select its own role, tenant, approval status or credential. A “send email” tool should obtain the recipient and sender identity from authorized application state, then apply its own outbound-data policy. A database tool should expose parameterized operations rather than arbitrary SQL.
Which enforcement mode should you use?
Introduce policy gradually. Blocking every uncertain match on day one creates workarounds and hides false positives; allowing everything indefinitely leaves known risks uncontained.
| Mode | Use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Audit or detection-only | Observe production traffic, matched rules and likely impact before changing user-visible behavior. | Finds tuning issues but does not stop violations. |
| Redaction | Remove a well-defined sensitive field when the remaining output is safe and useful. | Can damage meaning or create misleading output if applied broadly. |
| Block | Stop high-confidence policy violations, malformed requests and unauthorized actions. | Protective, but false positives can interrupt legitimate work. |
| Human approval | Escalate destructive, financial, legal, medical or otherwise high-impact actions. | Adds delay and operational staffing requirements. |
Kong documents none, stealth and verbose rejection modes, plus a continue_on_detection setting for staged enforcement. Whatever product you use, define what the caller sees, what the operator logs and what happens if the guardrail service is unavailable. Fail closed for high-impact actions; a lower-risk summarization path may use a controlled fail-open decision with conspicuous telemetry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do you log, monitor and operate guardrails?
Record enough context to investigate a decision without creating a new data-leakage channel. A useful event includes a correlation ID, timestamp, tenant, principal, model route, policy version, matched control, action taken, latency, token counts and final outcome. Hash or tokenize sensitive fields, restrict log access and apply a retention period appropriate to the data.
Monitor behavior, not just uptime
- Alert on repeated blocked requests, encoded or multilingual variants and sudden changes in bypass attempts.
- Track approval and refusal rates by model, tenant, policy version and release.
- Watch latency and cost added by semantic checks.
- Sample allowed and blocked traffic for human review.
- Compare tool-call proposals with executed actions to find authorization gaps.
OWASP recommends logging every guardrail decision and watching for drift. Provider models and classifiers can change behavior over time. Amazon notes that the underlying models used with Bedrock Guardrails are periodically updated, so continue testing after provider changes rather than assuming yesterday’s thresholds remain valid.
How should you test before broad enforcement?
Build a fixture set that represents both normal work and adversarial behavior. Run it in CI for policy changes and in a staging environment with realistic retrieval and tool flows.
- Direct jailbreaks and instruction-conflict prompts.
- Indirect injections in documents, web pages, email and tool results.
- Multilingual, obfuscated, encoded and fragmented payloads.
- PII, credentials, secrets and proprietary identifiers in inputs and outputs.
- Unsafe or prohibited topics and hostile markup.
- Malformed JSON, extra fields, wrong types and oversized arguments.
- Confused-deputy attempts that ask the model to use another user’s authority.
- Benign content that resembles an attack string, to measure false positives.
- Provider timeouts, guardrail outages and partial responses.
Measure false positives, false negatives, added latency, token use, cost and user-visible recovery behavior. A passing keyword test is not evidence that indirect or encoded injection is contained. Include human review for high-impact action scenarios.

How can you implement this with Kong AI Gateway?
Kong’s Kubernetes Operator guide applies an AIGatewayPolicy in the data plane, allowing guardrails to run on every LLM request without application changes. A documented pattern combines deny patterns for injection or jailbreak attempts with allow patterns for an engineering-only scope.
Use that pattern as a starting policy, then add tenant authorization, request limits, response inspection and tool-executor checks. Kong’s policy hub lists provider integrations, PII sanitization, semantic prompt and response guards, rate limiting and OpenTelemetry- and Prometheus-style observability integrations. Verify the exact plugin versions, failure behavior and data handling for your deployment; a gateway policy does not replace authorization in downstream tools.
When does Amazon Bedrock Guardrails fit?
Bedrock Guardrails is a managed choice for applications already using Amazon Bedrock. AWS describes multiple guardrails per account and policy bundles for content filters, denied topics, sensitive information, words and images. It evaluates both user inputs and model responses, which can reduce the amount of custom filtering code in an application.
It is most convenient when your traffic, identity and deployment already center on Bedrock. If you route to several providers or need a provider-neutral policy layer, place a separate gateway in front and treat Bedrock’s controls as an additional policy point. Re-test after underlying model updates and define how blocked, redacted and unavailable responses propagate to callers.

LiteLLM Proxy is a self-hosted gateway approach. Its documented quick start shows pre_call, during_call and post_call modes, with examples for prompt-injection detection and PII masking.
Self-hosting gives you control over deployment, provider routing and data residency, but your team owns upgrades, policy distribution, classifier availability, logging protection and incident response. Confirm that every provider route passes through the same hooks and that action authorization remains in an execution service rather than in proxy configuration.

What are the common implementation mistakes?
Relying on a keyword deny-list
Attackers can paraphrase, encode or place instructions in retrieved content. Keep pattern rules for high-confidence signals, but add semantic checks and enforce permissions at execution time.
Putting authorization in the system prompt
Prompt instructions are not an access-control mechanism. Resolve identity and resource scope in trusted services, then pass only permitted data to the model.
Scanning only the user message
Indirect injections often arrive through documents, web pages, email and tool results. Mark every external source untrusted and inspect it before context assembly.
Allowing free-form tool calls
Require strict schemas, bounded arguments and a fresh authorization decision for each call. Do not let a model choose credentials or approval state.
Enforcing before measuring
Start with detection-only traffic, review benign matches and establish recovery paths. Then block high-confidence cases and expand coverage as evidence supports it.
Logging sensitive payloads indiscriminately
Guardrail logs can become a copy of every secret sent to the model. Minimize fields, mask sensitive values, restrict access and set retention limits before production rollout.
What is a practical rollout sequence?
Use this order to move from design to controlled enforcement:
- Inventory identities, tenants, models, data sources, tools and consequences.
- Place one gateway route in front of every model provider and remove bypass paths.
- Implement authentication, deny-by-default model authorization and tenant quotas.
- Add content-type, schema, context, output, timeout and rate validation.
- Deploy inbound and outbound screening in audit mode, including retrieved content.
- Build the external tool executor with schemas, least-privilege credentials and approval gates.
- Create benign and adversarial fixtures and measure false positives, misses, latency and cost.
- Block high-confidence violations and redact only well-understood sensitive fields.
- Enable alerts for bypass patterns, drift, approval changes and guardrail outages.
- Review policies after provider, model, classifier or application changes, and roll back when metrics regress.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a gateway guarantee that prompt injection will never succeed?
No. Rephrasing, encoding and instructions hidden in retrieved content can evade input filters. A defensible design limits the consequences with least-privilege authorization, isolated tools, strict schemas and approval for high-impact actions.
Should guardrails fail open or fail closed when the inspection service is down?
Choose by consequence, not convenience. Fail closed for destructive, regulated or high-impact actions; a low-risk read-only response may use a narrowly scoped fallback, with an explicit outage event and no silent bypass.
How do I prevent guardrail logs from exposing customer secrets?
Log policy metadata, hashes or redacted excerpts instead of full prompts and responses where possible. Restrict access, encrypt the log store, define retention, and test that masking also covers tool arguments and classifier payloads.
Do I need a separate guardrail model for every foundation model?
Not necessarily. A gateway can apply shared classifiers and deterministic policies across providers, but thresholds and refusal behavior may differ by model. Maintain provider-specific fixtures and revalidate after model or guardrail updates.
