When AI-generated code compiles but fails at runtime, do not start by asking the model to rewrite the file. First establish whether the program throws an exception or completes with an incorrect result, capture a repeatable failure, and run that exact case under the same runtime conditions as the real application. Then use a debugger to find the earliest incorrect value, audit the generated code’s API and dependency assumptions, make the smallest justified change, and prove the repair with a regression test plus related checks. A successful build only shows that the compiler accepted the code; it does not prove that the API exists in your installed version, that inputs have the expected shape, or that the behavior is correct.
What does it mean when AI-generated code compiles but fails at runtime?
Compilation validates syntax, types, and other language-level rules. Runtime execution introduces values, files, network services, permissions, timing, configuration, and external packages that a compiler may not exercise. The result can be a thrown exception, an early process exit, a timeout, or a program that finishes while returning the wrong answer.
AWS warns that code can compile and pass linting while still being functionally wrong. GitHub’s debugging guidance separates an application that crashes from one that runs but produces an unexpected result. Those are different investigations: a stack trace narrows an execution path, while a wrong result requires an independently established expected value.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A 2026 reproducibility study of 300 generated projects found that 68.3% executed out of the box under the paper’s clean-environment protocol; 31.7% did not. That sample is not a universal failure rate and does not measure already-compiling snippets specifically. It does show why a green build is a weak stopping point for generated software.

Is this a crash or a wrong-result bug?
Make this fork before editing. Preserve the complete exception and trace for a crash; for a wrong result, preserve a known expected value and the observed value. Do not treat a plausible-looking output as evidence that the implementation is correct.
Exception, timeout, or abnormal exit
- Copy the exception type, message, complete stack trace, exit code, and the command or user action that triggered it.
- Record whether the process failed immediately, after a particular request, or only after repeated use.
- Capture the input, configuration, working directory, runtime version, and external service state that were present at the failure.
Runs to completion but gives the wrong output
- Write the expected result before inspecting the implementation. Derive it from a specification, a trusted fixture, a calculation you can show, or an authoritative API contract.
- Save the exact input and actual output, including ordering, casing, units, precision, and error fields that may otherwise be overlooked.
- Check whether the output is nondeterministic. If it varies, record a seed, timestamp, request identifier, or other condition that makes the case reproducible.
| Symptom | First evidence to preserve | Most useful next action |
|---|---|---|
| Exception or process exit | Full error, stack trace, exit code, command, input, and environment | Launch the same entry point under a debugger and inspect the failing path |
| Wrong output with no exception | Expected-versus-actual pair and the exact input | Set a breakpoint before the first divergent calculation or branch |
| Only deployment fails | Local and deployed runtime, configuration, permissions, dependencies, and logs | Make the local launch match deployment before changing the algorithm |
What should I record before changing code?
Create a short failure record. It prevents an AI suggestion or a hurried edit from changing the conditions that made the bug visible.
- Trigger: the exact command, URL, button sequence, job, or message that starts the failing path.
- Input: the smallest real input that still fails, plus any required files, database rows, headers, or environment variables.
- Expected behavior: what the specification or user should receive.
- Actual behavior: the complete exception and trace, or the exact wrong output and exit status.
- Runtime: executable and version, operating system or container image, working directory, build mode, and relevant feature flags.
- Dependencies: installed package versions, local services, network endpoints, credentials’ presence (never the secret values), and required permissions.
- Frequency: whether it fails every time, only for certain inputs, or only under load or in a particular deployment.
Keep this record beside the issue and attach it to any AI request. A debugger is useful only when it starts the same entry point with the same arguments and required environment as the failing application; debugging a different script or a test-only configuration can produce a reassuring but irrelevant result.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow do I reproduce the failure in the real runtime setup?
Reproduction comes before diagnosis. A local build that succeeds under different settings does not resolve a failure that occurs in deployment.
- Identify the actual entry point. Use the command, service target, handler, scheduled job, or UI action that failed. Do not substitute a neighboring demo or a unit test unless it demonstrably reaches the same code.
- Match the executable and project configuration. Confirm the language runtime, architecture, build mode, package lockfile, working directory, and startup arguments. A generated call may exist in a newer library than the one your project installs.
- Recreate required environment. Supply non-secret configuration, feature flags, files, database state, network access, and permissions. If an external service is unavailable, record that fact instead of silently replacing it with a mock.
- Reduce to a stable trigger. Minimize the input while preserving the failure. For a wrong result, keep the smallest case with a trustworthy expected value; for an exception, retain the complete trace and the smallest request that produces it.
- Configure the debugger to match. Microsoft documents reusable debugger configurations that specify the entry point, arguments, environment variables, startup tasks, and process attachment. Visual Studio Code is one illustration; the principle applies to any debugger. Verify the configuration actually launches the same process that fails.
- Check equivalence before blaming logic. If the issue occurs only in a container, hosted service, or production account, compare runtime versions, file paths, case sensitivity, permissions, network policies, time zones, and dependency installation. A passing local run means only that the local conditions passed.
How do I use a debugger to find the first bad state?
Set a breakpoint near the failing operation, inspect variables and the call stack, then step through execution until an input, return value, or branch first contradicts the intended behavior. The line where an exception appears is often downstream from the assumption that became invalid.

- Break before the suspected operation. Place a breakpoint at the API call, conversion, file access, database query, or branch that handles the recorded input.
- Inspect values, not just source text. Check nullability, data types, collection lengths, units, encodings, paths, identifiers, and whether optional fields are actually present. Compare each value with the contract the surrounding code expects.
- Read the call stack upward. The stack shows how execution reached the line. Follow caller arguments and return values to find where an invalid value was introduced.
- Step over and into deliberately. Step over stable library code; step into project code that transforms the input or selects a branch. Stop when the next value no longer matches the requirement.
- Use the debug console or watch expressions. Evaluate calculations that expose rounding, indexing, filtering, path construction, or authorization decisions. Record the result in the failure record rather than relying on memory.
- Repeat with the same trigger. If the value changes between runs, investigate nondeterminism, shared state, concurrency, time, or external responses before editing the apparent failure line.
These actions use documented debugger capabilities—breakpoints, stepping, variable inspection, call-stack views, and a debug console. They do not make a particular cause inevitable; your own observed state must support the diagnosis.
Which AI-specific assumptions should I audit?
Generated code often looks idiomatic while embedding an assumption that was never checked. GitHub’s official review guidance states: “Look for hallucinated APIs, ignored constraints, or incorrect logic.” Audit each category against the project, not against the model’s confidence.

Does every API and dependency actually exist?
- Verify the function, class, parameter name, return type, and exception behavior in the version installed by the project.
- Check import paths and package names. A plausible package can be unrelated, abandoned, malicious, or a typo that resolves to a different dependency.
- Compare generated calls with the project’s existing conventions. A method that exists in documentation for another edition or major version may compile only because a broad type or dynamic dispatch hides the mismatch until runtime.
- Review lockfiles, dependency declarations, and transitive packages. Do not accept a new package merely because the generated code imports it.
Were requirements silently dropped?
Read the original request beside the implementation. Look for omitted authorization checks, validation, ordering guarantees, transaction boundaries, retry limits, resource cleanup, localization, time-zone handling, or error propagation. A program can return a polished answer while violating a constraint that matters more than its syntax.
Are the data and control-flow assumptions true?
Trace the shape of real inputs through parsing, transformation, and output. Generated code commonly assumes a field is always present, a list is nonempty, a date is in one format, a path exists, or an API always returns a success payload. Add an explicit check or a clear failure path when the contract permits missing or malformed data; do not merely suppress the resulting exception.
Are packages and generated tests trustworthy?
Inspect suspicious dependencies, install scripts, network access, file writes, and permissions before running them. Treat an AI-generated test as another piece of code to review: its assertion may agree with a wrong implementation, use the same faulty formula, or avoid the edge case that exposed the bug. Never delete or skip a failing test just to obtain a green run.

How do I choose the smallest safe correction?
Change the earliest confirmed cause, not every line that looks unusual. A narrow correction preserves the evidence and makes it possible to tell whether the original trigger is fixed.
Recommended Free Tools
- State the violated assumption in one sentence, such as “the parser returns a missing field, but this branch treats it as mandatory.”
- Choose the smallest change that restores the stated contract: validate the input, use the installed API, correct the transformation, or handle the documented failure case.
- Keep unrelated refactoring, formatting, dependency upgrades, and prompt-driven rewrites out of the same change unless the diagnosis proves they are necessary.
- Preserve the original failing input as a regression case before or during the fix.
- Re-run the debugger when the result is surprising. If the first bad value has not changed, the edit addressed the symptom rather than the cause.
Do not “fix” an exception by catching every error, returning an empty value, widening a type, or deleting a validation check. Those changes can turn a visible failure into silent data corruption.
How do I verify that the runtime fix is real?
Verification is executable evidence, not a successful build. Retain a test for the original trigger, review what its assertion actually proves, and then expand the checks to related behavior.
- Write or preserve the regression test. Include the input that failed and an independently justified expected result or expected error. For a crash, assert the intended handling rather than merely asserting that any exception occurred.
- Run the focused test first. Targeted execution shortens the feedback loop and makes a failure attributable to the change. Microsoft documents targeted test execution and debugging workflows for this purpose.
- Inspect the assertion. Ensure it checks the meaningful value, not just that a function returned, a collection is nonempty, or a mock was called. Compare the expected value with a specification, fixture, or separately calculated result.
- Run related tests. Exercise neighboring inputs, boundary conditions, error paths, and integration points affected by the correction.
- Run applicable static checks. Linting, type analysis, formatting, dependency checks, and security scans can catch related issues, but none replaces runtime verification.
- Reproduce the original application action. Run the same command, request, job, or UI path under the equivalent environment. A passing unit test does not prove that packaging, configuration, permissions, or startup wiring are correct.
- Review the diff. Confirm that no test was skipped, deleted, weakened, or excluded and that generated changes did not add unreviewed packages or secrets.
What if it fails only in production or another environment?
Assume an environment mismatch until the evidence shows otherwise. Compare the conditions that control execution before changing an algorithm.
| Diagnostic option | Evidence available | Control over execution | Verification quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reproduced locally with a debugger | Variables, call stack, inputs, return values, and branch decisions | High: entry point, arguments, environment, and breakpoints are controllable | High when paired with a focused assertion and related tests |
| Production logs and traces | Recorded errors, request context, timings, and service responses that were captured | Limited: execution has already occurred and sensitive data may be redacted | Depends on whether logs include the failing input and expected-versus-actual evidence |
| Successful build or lint run | Syntax, type, and static-rule results | None over runtime state | Low for API availability, configuration, and behavioral correctness |
Check the deployed executable and package set, environment variables, working directory, file and network permissions, service identities, time zone, locale, architecture, concurrency, and external API responses. If you cannot reproduce the deployment conditions, say so explicitly in the issue and preserve the production evidence; do not claim that a local pass fixed the incident.

How should I ask an AI assistant for debugging help?
Use an assistant to generate hypotheses and checks, not to certify a repair. Provide the complete relevant error, a minimal reproduction, expected behavior, actual behavior, nearby code, runtime and dependency versions, and constraints such as “do not add packages” or “preserve ordering.” Remove credentials, tokens, personal data, and proprietary payloads before sharing.
A useful request asks for competing explanations and a way to falsify each one:
Here is the exact command and input: <command and minimal input>.
Expected: <independently verified result or intended error>.
Actual: <complete exception and trace, or exact wrong output>.
Runtime and dependency versions: <versions>.
Relevant code: <smallest surrounding excerpt>.
List the earliest assumptions to inspect, explain what evidence would confirm or reject each,
and propose the smallest change. Do not remove tests or add dependencies without justification.
GitHub’s April 23, 2026 changelog describes web-based stack-trace analysis in its coding assistant using repository context and reproduction steps. That is a vendor-described feature, not an independent performance measurement. Whether you use it or another assistant, inspect the proposed cause in your own debugger and rerun the original case.
Which tempting fixes should I reject?
- “Ask for a complete rewrite.” A rewrite destroys the evidence trail and can introduce new APIs, dependencies, and untested behavior.
- “Catch the exception and continue.” Suppressing an error can convert a visible outage into corrupted or incomplete data.
- “Make the type flexible.” Replacing a precise type with a dynamic value may postpone the failure until a more damaging operation.
- “Delete the failing test.” A green suite with no coverage for the trigger is not evidence of a repair.
- “Upgrade everything.” A broad dependency upgrade changes multiple variables and may hide the original incompatibility.
- “It works in the demo.” A different entry point, fixture, account, or environment does not establish equivalence.
- “The output looks reasonable.” Verify calculations, authorization, units, ordering, and edge cases against an independent expectation.
When should I stop debugging locally?
Escalate when the failure depends on production-only data, a remote service, permissions you cannot obtain, concurrency, data loss risk, or a security-sensitive package. Preserve the reproduction record, redacted logs, dependency manifest, deployment details, and the exact change already attempted. An escalation that includes evidence is more actionable than a request to “fix the crash.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Can code pass static analysis and still be unsafe to run?
Yes. Static tools do not observe live credentials, permissions, network responses, data-dependent branches, or the behavior of a newly installed package. Treat their clean result as one layer of evidence and still execute representative, security-reviewed cases.
Why does adding a log sometimes make the failure disappear?
Logging can alter timing, buffering, thread scheduling, or the amount of data processed. Capture the new evidence, but also investigate shared state and concurrency and keep a reproduction that does not depend on the log statement itself.
Should I share a full stack trace with an AI service?
Share only the portion needed to explain the control flow and redact secrets, access tokens, personal data, customer identifiers, and proprietary payloads. Retain the original privately so you can compare the assistant’s interpretation with the unredacted event.
