Acer Predator 15: At First Glance
For a while now, Acer has been one of the greatest gaming PC manufacturers in the world. Moreover, Acer has given us excellent gaming PCs like the Acer Predator G6 and the Acer Predator 21 X in previous years.
To add to its gaming PC collection, Acer released the Predator 15, which is a 15-inch gaming laptop with an outstanding GPU. Furthermore, this laptop comes with a good number of functional ports as well as a brilliant keyboard.
However, as most of us know, gaming laptops with such features are normally expensive. To give more details, when I wrote this article in December 2021, the Acer Predator 15 had a starting price of $2,999.11
Now the question is does the Acer Predator 15 actually worth this massive price tag? Read on to satisfy your curiosity.

Acer Predator 15: Design, Dimensions, and Weight
To start with, the Acer Predator 15 comes with a plastic chassis. However, the design of this laptop is somewhat boring.
This isn’t surprising, though, as gaming laptops aren’t really known for offering an appealing design. On a positive note, this Acer gaming laptop features a rather impressive-looking lid that gives it a bit of elegance.
To give more details, the laptop’s lid comes with a soft-touch black finish. Also, there is a “Predator” emblem finely placed at the center of the lid.

That said, like most gaming laptops, the rear of the Acer Predator 15 has a series of cooling vents. However, instead of a plain black lining seen on most gaming laptops, the Predator 15’s vents are surrounded by redlining.
Moving on, upon opening the laptop’s lid, you will be greeted by the laptop’s black interior, 15.6-inch display, and keyboard.
Speaking of the keyboard, the Acer Predator 15 features a chiclet-type keyboard. The W, A, S, D, and directional keys on this keyboard are surrounded by red highlights.
Furthermore, the keyboard has a backlit feature, specifically a red-backlit feature. Basically, the keyboard glows red anytime you enable the backlit feature.

One of these macro keys is for tuning the level of the laptop’s cooling fan.
Another key among these macro keys is a shortcut for the Win + D command, which minimizes all tasks and takes you immediately to your desktop screen.
Performance-wise, the Acer Predator 15’s keyboard is very responsive, thus; making it comfortable to type on.
Moving on, there is a full-sized touchpad as well as a very spacious palm rest below this keyboard. Moreover, this touchpad is also surrounded by red highlights.

Furthermore, the touchpad is quite smooth and responsive to touch. Interestingly, there’s a button immediately to the right of this touchpad that allows you to instantly disable it for long typing sessions or gaming.
Proceeding to the Acer Predator 15’s display, this laptop features a 15.6-inch display, as mentioned earlier. This display comes with a Full-HD (1920 x 1080) resolution that allows it to deliver colorful and clear content.
Above this display, you will see an HD webcam. This webcam isn’t particularly great for taking pictures, but it is ideal for video conference calls or casual skyping.
Next up, the ports. The Acer Predator 15 comes with a good number of ports that are well distributed across its sides.

Also, there is an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and a Kensington lock slot on the right side of the laptop.
The left side, on the other hand, features an SD card reader, a headphone/mic jack, two more USB 3.0 Type-A ports, and a removable optical drive.
Unfortunately, despite featuring plenty of ports, the Acer Predator 15 lacks a Thunderbolt port. On a positive note, this laptop features Bluetooth 4.1 and IEEE 802.11ac WIFI for wireless connectivity.
Moving on to the dimension and weight of this laptop, the Acer Predator 15 measures 391 x 299.5 x 38.5 mm and weighs a massive 3700 g.

However, the Acer Predator 15’s 3700 g weight is too heavy even for a gaming laptop standard.
In fact, there are various gaming laptops that are less heavy than the Acer Predator 15. For example, the ASUS Vivobook Pro 17 N705 and the Alienware m15 R2.
Specifically, the ASUS Vivobook Pro 17 N705 weighs only 2200 g. The Alienware m15 R2, on the other hand, weighs 2160 g.
To conclude this design review section, I will rate the Acer Predator 15 an eight out of ten.
Acer Predator 15: Processor (CPU) Performance
For the processor, the Acer Predator 15 features a 4-core Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor. This processor comes with a 2.80 GHz base frequency and a maximum frequency of 3.80 GHz.
In addition to its base and maximum frequencies, this processor also comes with a cache memory of 12 MB.

Performance-wise, with this processor, the Acer Predator 15 will be able to handle any kind of computing task you throw at it. Also, the laptop will be able to run high-end games as well as multitask easily with this processor.
That said, to prove how well this processor can perform, I will now share the Acer Predator 15’s results on a Geekbench 4 test. For clarity, the Geekbench 4 is a benchmark test that measures the overall performance of a computer’s CPU.

Furthermore, on this benchmark test, a higher score means better performance. So, on the Geekbench 4 benchmark test, the Predator 15 scored 13,216 points.
Impressively, this laptop’s score is way above the category average of 8,488 points. That’s not all; the Acer Predator 15 also performed better than the majority of its competitors on the Geekbench 4 test.
For instance, the ASUS ROG Strix Scar III, which uses an Intel Core i5-9300H processor, scored 12,947 points on the Geekbench 4 test.
In conclusion, the Acer Predator 15 features a powerful processor one would expect from a gaming laptop. Therefore, I will rate the laptop a nine out of ten in this processor review section.
Acer Predator 15: Memory (RAM) Performance
The standard memory you will find on the Acer Predator 15 is 16 GB DDR4 SDRAM. Impressively, this laptop has four RAM slots and supports a maximum RAM capacity of 64 GB!
This review, however, is based on the Acer Predator 15 with the standard RAM of 16 GB. Although the laptop with a max of 64 GB will deliver better performance, the 16 GB will suffice for whatever task you would be performing on the laptop.
To be more specific, the Acer Predator 15 will be able to run most title AAA games with 16 GB RAM. Additionally, with 16 GB RAM, this laptop will be able to perform intensive multitasking with ease.
To give more details, you will be able to open about 35 Chrome tabs on the Acer Predator 15 without slowing down. Also, while these Chrome tabs are opened, you should be able to run multiple applications like YouTube concurrently on the laptop.
That said, to further prove the capabilities of this laptop with 16 GB, I will now share the laptop’s results on a PCMark 8 test. Briefly, PCMark 8 is a memory benchmark test that measures how fast a computer can perform office-related tasks like word processing.
In addition to that, a high score on the PCMark 8 test indicates a great performance. So, on the PCMark 8 test, the Acer Predator 15 scored a whopping 6,520 points.
Comparatively, the Acer Predator 15 achieved a better score than most of its competitors. For example, the MSI GT62VR-6RE Dominator Pro scored 5,926 points on the PCMark 8 test.
After thorough consideration, I believe the Acer Predator 15 deserves a rating of nine out of ten in this memory review section.

The Acer Predator 15 comes with two storage configuration choices. To give more details, you can choose to purchase the laptop with an HDD or SSD storage.
The maximum capacity that the HDD storage option supports is 1 TB. On the other hand, the SSD storage option supports a max capacity of 128 GB.
The Acer Predator 15 with HDD storage is the ideal choice if you prefer storage space to speed. However, if speed is more important to you than storage space, the laptop with SSD storage is the best choice.
Before moving on, it is important to note that this review is based on the Acer Predator 15 with 128 GB SSD storage. As most of us are aware, solid-state drives (SSDs) are the fastest storage system available today.

CrystalDiskMark is a storage benchmark test that determines a computer’s SSD’s or HDD’s read and writes speed.
If you’re curious, read speed refers to how long it takes for a computer’s storage to open a file. The time it takes the storage to save a file, on the other hand, is known as write speed.
So, according to the CrystalDiskMark test, the Acer Predator 15 has a sequential read of 1728 MB/s. Also, the laptop has a 1562 MB/s sequential write speed.
Comparatively, the Acer Predator 15 has a faster sequential read and write speed than the ASUS ROG Strix G531GT. Specifically, based on the CrystalDiskMark test, the ASUS ROG Strix G531GT has a sequential read and sequential write speed of 1505.3 MB/s and 945.7 MB/s, respectively.
In conclusion, the Acer Predator 15 offers multiple storage options for users to choose from. Also, the laptop’s SSD storage is very fast compared to most of its competitors.
Therefore, it is ideal to rate the Acer Predator 15 a nine out of ten in this storage review section.
Acer Predator 15: Graphics Card Performance
The Acer Predator 15 comes with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card. This GPU has a base frequency of 1506 MHz and a boost frequency of 1708 MHz.

For instance, the laptop will achieve around 60 fps (frame per second) when playing the Witcher 3 video game. Also, playing graphics-demanding games like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the laptop should deliver a frame rate of around 40 fps.
To further prove the graphics capabilities of the Acer Predator 15 with this GPU, I will now share the laptop’s result on a 3DMark test. Just to be clear, 3DMark is a benchmark test that measures how well a computer can render 3D graphics.
Also, on this 3DMark benchmark test, the higher the score, the better the performance. So, based on the benchmark test results, the Acer Predator 15 scored a massive 22,246 points.
This score is way above the 14,222 points scored by the Schenker XMG P507 on the same benchmark test. That’s not all; the Acer Predator 15’s score also beat the category average of 15,000 points.

For the battery, the Acer Predator 15 is powered by an 8-cell lithium-ion 6000 mAh battery. Acer claims that this laptop will last around 3 hours with this battery.
Before you get totally disappointed, keep in mind that gaming laptops are quite infamous for having poor battery life. The Acer Predator 15, sadly, is no exception.
However, even though Acer claimed that the laptop would last 3 hours, the laptop’s actual battery life isn’t up to that. Specifically, on a video playback test, the Acer Predator 15 lasted only 2 hours and 28 minutes.

Also, on this test, the laptop’s screen brightness level is normally set to 50%.
When compared to the ASUS ROG Strix G531GT, the Acer Predator 15 has longer battery life. Specifically, on the video playback test, the ASUS ROG Strix G531GT lasted only 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Even though the Acer Predator 15 has a better battery life than the ASUS ROG Strix G531GT, its 2 hours+ battery life is still poor.
Therefore, I will rate the Acer Predator 15 a seven out of ten in this battery review section.

Notwithstanding, the Acer Predator 15 is a worthy performer, and I totally recommend it to anyone that can afford it.
