Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel: At First Glance

In 2020, Acer, a Taiwanese manufacturer wowed users with its new convertible laptop – ConceptD 3 Ezel. The Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel has an impressive Ezel hinge unlike the flip-and-fold design of most convertible laptops.

Although the laptop is slightly expensive, if you are the type that values innovation, then this notebook definitely got you covered. Its weird-looking hinge will fascinate you.

Talking about expensive, as of November 2021 when I published this review, Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel was going for $1,299.99.

With this high price tag, will users be convinced that the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel is worth it? Read on as I provide you with all you need to know to help you answer this question.

Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel: Design, Dimension & Weight

Acer unleashed its creativity in the design aspect of this laptop. There are several convertible laptops these days but the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel has leverage over most of its competitors.

Starting from the laptop’s case, Acer’s design is commendable. The ConceptD 3 Ezel’s outer covering is built with magnesium alloy.

Its lid is beautifully covered with a white ceramic layer that gives the laptop a beautiful sheen. Furthermore, this lid is built with a premium aluminum alloy chassis.

The aluminum build material contributes to the laptop’s lightness.

In its closed position, the Acer ConceptD 3 looks like a normal laptop. It is when you attempt to open up the laptop that you begin to see something very different.

Acer’s big design feature is between the laptop’s hinge and display. In fact, the name Ezel is gotten from the laptop’s flexible screen hinge.

This Ezel hinge allows users to switch the laptop’s form into different modes. You can switch to whichever mode pleases you at any particular time.

For the most part, it is different from the flip-and-fold design in most 2-in-1 laptops. You can use the Acer ConceptD 3 in Stand, Share, Pad, Display, Float, or Laptop modes.

The Ezel hinge allows you to work on the move with Stand mode. This unique convertible laptop also offers you the option to collaborate with two or more persons using its Share mode.

Furthermore, the laptop also allows you to explore write-ups or content on Pad mode. That is not all, you can also use it in Display mode – particularly useful for delivering a speech.

Thanks to its hinge, this laptop can as well be used either in Float mode or Laptop mode.

In the interior part of the laptop, you won’t be able to help but notice the thick top and bottom bezel on the Acer ConcepD 3’s display. Maybe the top bezel, in particular, was made thick in order to comfortably accommodate the 720p HD webcam.

The side bezels on the other hand are slightly thinner.

Moving on, you can purchase this laptop with two display options. You can either have it as a 14-inch or 15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) pixel resolution display with 400 nits brightness.

Talking about features, this laptop is perfect for designers and professional artists because it features a Pantone-validated touch screen. For clarity, Pantone validated touch screens are screens that have gone through and passed the color test.

Moving on to other specs, on the bottom part of the laptop, there’s a speaker that shares the deck area with the keyboard. This speaker produces low sounds and lacks bass, but overlapping tracks can be easily distinguished on this speaker.

Moving to the keyboard, Acer offers a full-width keyboard. Acer properly laid out the keyboard using the QWERTY ANSI layout.

The keys on the keyboard have a 1.55 mm key travel that makes typing convenient. Another feature that helps to improve the typing experience on the Acer ConceptD 3’s keyboard is its orange backlighting feature that beams whenever it is turned on.

Below the keys, you will find a Gorilla glass surface touchpad. This touchpad gracefully responds to finger taps and drags.

Overall, the keyboard and touchpad on this laptop offer incredible functionality.

Now on the weight and dimension of this convertible laptop, the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel weighs 1728.1 g and measures 327.6 x 228.6 x 23.8 mm. Comparatively, Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel is a bit heavier and bigger than the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6.

Specifically, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 weighs 1399 g and measures 313 x 223 x 14.9 mm.

In terms of ports, the left side of the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel laptop features a Kensington lock, an HDMI port, a Thunderbolt 3 port, and a Mini Display Port. On the right side of the laptop, you get an audio jack and two USB 3.2 type-A ports.

In conclusion, the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel receives a nine in this design, dimension & weight review. This rating is due to its unique design.

To be clear, our review unit features the Core i7 processor. Being a core-i7 processor, one would expect the processor to be powerful.

Unfortunately, the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel CPU is so frustrating, in terms of its processor performance. It is slow and inefficient.

In fact, the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel’s Cinebench benchmark test result was low when I compared it with the scores of its major competitor. If you’re wondering, the Cinebench benchmark test is for measuring a laptop’s processor performance.

In this benchmark, a higher score means a better processor performance.

For its memory configuration, Acer equips the ConceptD 3 with an 8 GB DDR4 SDRAM memory. The Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel features just one memory slot, but its memory can still be upgraded to a maximum capacity of 16 GB.

To discover the RAM performance capabilities of the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel, we took records of its performance on the PCMark 10 benchmark test. The PCMark 10 benchmark test usually analyzes the memory performance of a laptop.

The more the scores, the better it performs.

On the test, the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel scored 4690 Points. This score is lower than the Asus ROG Flow X13’s 5971 Points.

Meanwhile, the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel performed better than the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2020 that scored 4251 Points.

Based on the results of these tests, the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel is effective in carrying out multitasking operations. It can also handle most computational tasks without hitches.

These results show that this Acer laptop has what it takes in terms of memory performance. Evidently, it performs better than at least some laptops in its category.

Hence, the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel scores an eight in this memory performance review.

Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel: Battery Life & Performance

The battery that comes with the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel is a 4-cell Lithium-Ion (Li-ion). Acer stated that this battery can offer a runtime of up to 18 hours under normal operations.

On a continuous web surfing test, the Acer ConceptD’s battery lasted for 10 hours 30 mins at 50% screen brightness.

This didn’t go in line with Acer’s claim, but 10 hrs 30 mins isn’t bad either. This run-time is enough to do some basic computational tasks and other minimal tasks before the laptop go off.

Furthermore, on a PCMark 10 video rundown test, the ConceptD 3 delivered a run time of 15 hours 10 minutes.

Comparatively, this laptop lasted longer than MSI prestige 14 that lasted for 13 hours 22 minutes. In contrast, the ASUS Expertbook B9450 outperformed the Acer ConceptD with a runtime of 29 hours 7 minutes.

Hence, the Acer ConceptD 3 Ezel scores a seven in this battery performance review section.
