A May 30, 2025 report from Windows Central, citing unnamed sources, said the company had parked its own handheld while prioritizing Windows 11 improvements for partner devices, particularly its ASUS collaboration. The Xbox-branded ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is a separate Windows PC handheld—not confirmation that Microsoft’s own device has launched.
Is Microsoft still making an Xbox handheld?
The most accurate status is that Microsoft’s first-party handheld was reportedly paused or reprioritized, not officially canceled. Windows Central reported on May 30, 2025, citing unnamed sources, that Microsoft was directing attention to Windows 11 handheld performance and the ASUS partnership instead. The report distinguished Microsoft’s possible device from the ASUS project, which it called “Kennan,” and said the Microsoft device’s codename was uncertain.
Microsoft’s reviewed public statements do not confirm a first-party handheld, a cancellation, or a release timetable. Treat the pause as reported status, not an official product announcement. The project could return, remain on hold, or never ship; the available statements do not settle which outcome will occur.
Why was the handheld reportedly put on hold?
According to Windows Central’s report, Microsoft’s near-term focus shifted to making Windows 11 work better for handheld gaming and supporting its ASUS partner device. That puts software and the partner collaboration ahead of a separate Microsoft-made handheld, at least for the period described by the report.

Microsoft has also described a wider effort to make Xbox experiences more consistent across console, PC, and other screens. In its March 11, 2026 update, Xbox discussed cross-device play, Xbox mode on Windows 11, and next-generation hardware development. Those priorities help explain the ecosystem direction, but they do not confirm that a first-party handheld is part of the shipping hardware lineup.

On June 10, 2026, Xbox leadership described console, Windows, and game publishing as foundations for a stronger Xbox. In its FY2026 Q4 earnings call, Microsoft framed its decisions across content, platform, and operations as a business reset intended to support long-term growth, with a return to growth expected in fiscal 2027. These company-wide priorities provide context for shifting effort, but Microsoft has not publicly tied them specifically to a decision to cancel or delay a first-party handheld.
