Microsoft has confirmed that its next Xbox, Project Helix, is designed to play Xbox console and PC games—but it has not confirmed that the retail console will offer unrestricted Windows 11 desktop access. The idea that it will work like a full Windows gaming PC comes from reporting, not Microsoft’s published specifications. Microsoft has not announced a consumer release date or price.

What Microsoft has confirmed about Project Helix

On March 11, 2026, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald announced that Project Helix was in development. He wrote: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.” Microsoft says the system will use a custom AMD SoC, co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. Xbox Wire’s announcement does not identify the chip’s specifications or list compatible PC games.

Microsoft also said Helix would deliver an “order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability.” That is the company’s claim, not a result established by released hardware benchmarks. No retail performance figures are available in the cited announcement.

Will the next Xbox run Windows 11?

That has not been confirmed for the console. Microsoft has described Project Helix as able to play Xbox and PC games, but its announcement does not say whether buyers will have access to a conventional Windows 11 desktop, install arbitrary Windows applications, or choose among PC game storefronts.

The full-Windows-PC framing comes from Windows Central reporting by Jez Corden on February 8, 2026. Corden reported that the next Xbox was expected to be close to a Windows 11 gaming PC, with a TV-first console interface, and might run PC software and storefronts. Those are reported expectations, not features Microsoft has officially specified.

What Xbox mode means—and what it does not prove

Microsoft is bringing Xbox mode to Windows 11 PCs. Ronald described it as a way to switch between productivity and play, using a full-screen, controller-optimized Xbox experience while retaining Windows openness. The feature began rolling out in select markets in April 2026, according to Microsoft’s April 30 Windows Experience Blog post. Microsoft had earlier outlined its plans for Xbox mode and Helix in a March 11 post.

Xbox mode on Windows demonstrates how Microsoft is combining a controller-focused Xbox interface with Windows. It does not establish that the Project Helix console will expose the same desktop, apps, or settings. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is a current Windows gaming handheld associated with Xbox mode, but it is a separate product—not the Helix console or proof of its eventual specifications.

Can Project Helix play PC games?

Microsoft says it is designed to play PC games as well as Xbox console games. That is the clearest official answer, but the announcement does not name supported storefronts or provide a complete compatibility list. It also does not say that every Windows game will run on the console.

Microsoft separately said the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog contained more than 1,500 games as of Ronald’s March 11, 2026 post. That figure describes the Play Anywhere program, not the full catalog of Xbox or PC games, and does not by itself define Project Helix compatibility.

Backward compatibility and developer hardware

Microsoft said it remains committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable “for years to come.” The announcement does not provide a title-by-title list or explain every compatibility condition, so it should not be read as a guarantee that every game from those generations will work.

Release date and price: what is still unknown

Microsoft has not announced a consumer release date or price in the cited material. Corden’s February 2026 report relayed AMD CEO Lisa Su’s comment that semi-custom SoC development was progressing to support a 2027 launch. The same report said Microsoft had not firmly committed internally to that timing and that software readiness and other factors mattered. Treat 2027 as a reported possibility, not a confirmed retail launch year.

What to watch for in official details

The key unanswered questions are whether the final console will offer desktop Windows access, which PC storefronts and games it will support, and what hardware, price, and consumer release timing Microsoft will announce. Until those details are published, Project Helix is best understood as a next-generation Xbox with officially stated Xbox-and-PC game ambitions—not a confirmed, unrestricted Windows 11 PC.
