Microsoft has announced 2026 second editions of the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch, both powered by Snapdragon X2 Plus. Their announced US starting prices are $1,149.99 and $1,199, respectively, and Microsoft says availability begins October 13, 2026, in select markets. As of October 4, that date is still ahead; the announcement does not establish live stock or a current discount. So “at great prices” is not yet a verified deal claim.
What Microsoft announced—and when you can buy them
Microsoft announced the two devices on September 23, 2026. Both are second editions, and both switch to the Snapdragon X2 Plus processor. Microsoft lists October 13, 2026, as the start of availability in select markets, including availability to commercial customers through Surface for Business. That is an announced date, not confirmation that a particular retailer or region has stock.
| Device | Processor | Announced US starting price | Availability announced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface Pro 12-inch (2nd Edition, 2026) | Snapdragon X2 Plus | $1,149.99 MSRP | October 13, 2026, in select markets |
| Surface Laptop 13-inch (2nd Edition, 2026) | Snapdragon X2 Plus | $1,199 MSRP | October 13, 2026, in select markets |
These are Microsoft’s announced US starting prices, not evidence of a retailer’s current price or an active markdown. Local availability, configurations and prices may differ. Microsoft’s September 23 announcement does not provide live retailer listings.
Which one fits your work style?
Surface Pro 12-inch: choose it for a tablet-first setup
The Pro is a detachable 2-in-1: use it as a tablet, or add the separately sold Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard for a laptop-like setup. Microsoft highlights its thin, light, fanless design and 500-nit touchscreen. The keyboard and Surface Slim Pen are extra costs, so compare the complete setup price with the Laptop rather than comparing only the Pro’s starting MSRP. The 2026 announcement does not establish whether first-edition keyboard or pen accessories work with this edition; check compatibility before buying an older accessory.

What the performance and battery figures mean
Microsoft says its September 2026 comparisons found up to 17% faster Office productivity performance, more than 60% faster graphics performance and up to 95% faster local AI inference versus the previous-generation devices. The company cites Procyon Office Productivity, 3DMark Steel Nomad Lite and Procyon AI tests. These are manufacturer test results, not independent head-to-head reviews; Microsoft cautions that results vary by configuration, workload and other factors.
For the second-edition Laptop, Microsoft advertises up to 22.5 hours of local video playback. Its battery-life footnote says results vary significantly with use, settings and other factors, so treat the figure as a manufacturer test claim rather than a normal-use guarantee.

For the Pro, Microsoft describes an extra hour of active web browsing. That comparison used a preproduction 16GB/256GB configuration in August 2026, twelve popular websites, multiple open tabs, Wi-Fi and 150-nit brightness. Those specific test conditions matter; the claim does not establish how long every configuration will last in everyday use.
How the new prices compare with first-edition launch prices
| Device | First-edition launch price (2025) | Second-edition announced starting price (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Pro 12-inch | $799 at announcement | $1,149.99 MSRP |
| Surface Laptop 13-inch | $899 at announcement | $1,199 MSRP |
The older figures were launch prices for the 2025 first editions, not current prices or like-for-like retailer quotes. Microsoft’s May 6, 2025 launch announcement described those first-edition models as using Snapdragon X Plus, 8-core. Do not use their launch prices as the current price of either edition.

Snapdragon X Plus is ARM-based and supports most mainstream apps, but some older, specialized, plugin-based, or driver-dependent software may have limited compatibility.
Is either Surface actually on sale at a great price?
Not on the evidence available in Microsoft’s announcements. As of October 4, 2026, the stated October 13 availability date has not arrived, and the announced MSRPs do not prove that either device is discounted. Nor do the announcements establish whether either price is competitive against current retailer prices or comparable products. Once sales begin, check the exact edition, configuration, local stock and final price—including the Pro’s keyboard and pen if you need them—before deciding whether a particular offer is good.
