Its Arduino Nano coordinates a countdown, user-operated interlocks, environmental sensors and a mission timer. The Arduino Team described the build on January 17, 2023; Hackaday’s Al Williams covered it on January 23, 2023.
What the controller is designed to do
Hobby model rocket motors use disposable propellant and are electrically ignited. A simple controller can provide ignition with a battery, boost converter and cables. This project adds a more elaborate interface: a keyed enable, two buttons that must be held during the countdown, environmental readings and mission elapsed-time tracking.
The sensors report temperature, humidity and barometric pressure. Those readings add context to the launch process; the project coverage does not show that they improve flight performance or establish how the readings are used to make launch decisions.
Major components in the build
The Arduino Team names these major parts, but notes that the full bill of materials is longer. They should not be treated as a complete shopping list.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Part | Role described in the coverage |
|---|---|
| Arduino Nano | Controller board |
| 16×2 character LCD | Display for the controller |
| BMP180 pressure sensor | Barometric pressure readings |
| DHT11 sensor | Temperature and humidity readings |
| DS1370 real-time clock | Clock component named for the build |
The enclosure is described as a 13-inch toolbox with a chipboard panel. The cited coverage does not specify a Nano revision or establish current availability for the individual parts.
How the launch sequence is described
The Arduino Team’s project description calls for two power supplies and a key-operated enable. During the countdown, the operator holds both the safety and fire buttons. Hackaday specifies a 10-second countdown and reports that releasing either button cancels it. Hackaday also says the controller tracks mission elapsed time.

This describes the intended operating sequence in the coverage, not a validated procedure for a particular launch site, motor or rocket. The articles do not provide a full wiring diagram or complete bill of materials in the information summarized here.
How it compares with a basic controller
| Approach | Features described | What the coverage does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Basic ignition controller | Battery, boost converter and cables | Comparable price or measured performance |
| Arduino Launch Control System | Keyed enable, two-button countdown interlock, environmental sensors and elapsed-time tracking | Comparable price, measured performance or independent test results |
The Arduino version is therefore more feature-rich, but the sources do not quantify whether that added complexity improves reliability or launch outcomes.

What the interlocks do—and do not—prove
Requiring a key and simultaneous button holds are design features intended to make launch activation deliberate. They are not proof that inadvertent ignition is impossible. Hackaday discusses switch-failure scenarios and the possibility of an unintended launch; the cited articles do not report testing against those failures.
The project coverage also does not establish certification, compliance with a safety standard, regulatory suitability or professional launch-system suitability. Treat this as a maker project description, not a safety assessment. Anyone considering a build should evaluate applicable local rules and established model-rocket safety guidance rather than relying on the presence of interlocks alone.
