Microsoft Edge’s changes are not one blanket feature purge. Drop is retired in Edge 152, real-time video translation is being withdrawn gradually, shopping tools are moving into Copilot, and Manifest V2 extensions are being phased out on a separate schedule. Edge 154 also removes legacy Windows protections used by some organizations. What changes for you depends on your Edge version, region, and whether your browser is managed by work.
What is changing in Microsoft Edge?
Microsoft’s release notes list different kinds of change: complete retirement, gradual retirement, consolidation into Copilot, and removal of legacy code paths. Manifest V2 (MV2) extensions are a separate platform transition, not a built-in Edge feature retirement.
| Change | Timing and scope | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Drop | Retired in Edge 152, whose main release was August 27, 2026 | Drop can no longer be used to send files and notes between devices. The release note gives no procedure for moving or recovering Drop content. |
| Real-time video translation | Gradual retirement; timing can vary by environment | The feature is being withdrawn, but Microsoft does not give a single date when it will disappear for everyone. |
| Standalone shopping tools | Transitioning to Copilot in Edge | Price comparison, price history, price tracking, and cashback are being centralized in Copilot. The shopping icon is being deprecated as the main entry point. |
| WIP and MDAG code paths | Retired in Edge 154, released September 24, 2026 | Relevant primarily to organizations that configured these protections; they were off by default. |
| Manifest V2 extensions | Consumer transition began August 2026; completion targeted by end of 2026. Enterprise deprecation planned for early 2027. | MV2 extensions are to be gradually turned off by default. Users will be notified and directed to MV3 versions where available. Managed devices are excluded from the consumer rollout. |
Microsoft Learn’s release notes, last updated October 1, 2026, listed Stable 154.0.4258.53 and Extended Stable 152.0.4191.111 as the latest minor versions. Stable updates roll out progressively, so users may see changes at different times. See Microsoft Edge Stable and Extended Stable release notes.
Is Edge Drop gone?
Yes. Microsoft’s Stable release notes say Drop was retired in Edge 152. Drop let you send files and notes between devices. The release-note entry says, “We’re simplifying Microsoft Edge,” but does not give a migration procedure or explain what happens to stored notes and files. Do not assume all Drop content will be preserved or transferred; the published notice does not establish its retention details.

Where did shopping go in Edge?
Microsoft is discontinuing the standalone shopping tools and moving their capabilities into Copilot in Edge. The affected tools include price comparison, price history, price tracking, and cashback. Microsoft describes the consolidation as a way to provide shopping capabilities through a unified Copilot experience and says the capabilities remain available as they transition.
Availability is staged. Microsoft Support says Copilot Shopping features are rolling out in the US, with the majority available starting in early November and other markets to follow later. Personalized shopping features require a current Edge version, a signed-in Microsoft account, and the shopping setting enabled. Some alerts are still in development and may not appear for every user. Details are on Microsoft Support’s Copilot in Edge shopping page.

Is real-time video translation being removed?
Microsoft says real-time video translation is being retired through a gradual rollout, and availability may vary across environments. It has not published a universal date for when every user will lose access. The LiveVideoTranslationEnabled policy is also slated for deprecation in a future update, so administrators relying on it should watch Edge policy and release notices.
Will Edge extensions stop working?
Some may. Microsoft began transitioning consumers away from Manifest V2 in August 2026. MV2 extensions are to be gradually disabled by default, with notices directing users to MV3 versions when available. The rollout starts in Canary, Dev, and Beta before broadening to Stable. Microsoft targets completion of the consumer transition by the end of 2026; enterprise deprecation is planned for early 2027. Managed devices are not affected during the consumer rollout.

Microsoft says MV3 offers security and performance improvements. The Microsoft Edge Team reported on August 7, 2026, that 95% of the top MV2 extensions on Edge Add-ons had moved to MV3. It also said 58 MV2 extensions on the store had meaningful usage, and only three of those lacked a publicly available MV3-based extension. Those are Microsoft-published figures, not an independent measurement. Read the Microsoft Edge Team’s MV3 transition announcement.
- Check the extension’s listing for an MV3 version from its developer.
- If you use Edge at work or school, ask your administrator whether your device is managed and what extension policy applies.
- Do not assume a replacement has identical features or permissions; review its listing and permissions before installing it.
Do WIP and MDAG affect ordinary Edge users?
Usually not. Edge 154 retires the code paths for Windows Information Protection (WIP) and Microsoft Defender Application Guard (MDAG), but Microsoft says the change affects tenants that configured them. Both were off by default, targeted Windows 10, and were already unavailable on Windows 11 version 24H2. Microsoft frames their removal as alignment with the Windows platform, which had deprecated both technologies.

Organizations using these protections should validate replacements against their own policies and environment. Microsoft points to Purview Information Protection, Purview endpoint DLP, Data Loss Prevention, and Intune app protection policies for WIP use cases. For MDAG use cases, it points to Edge for Business security capabilities and native hardware isolation, as well as SmartScreen, Enhanced Security Mode, DLP, and website typo protection. These options are not automatically equivalent in every configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is Microsoft changing these features?
Microsoft has given different explanations, rather than one universal reason. For Drop, the release note says only, “We’re simplifying Microsoft Edge.” It does not say that Drop is being replaced by Copilot or establish another specific cause. For shopping, Microsoft says it is consolidating capabilities into a unified Copilot experience. For WIP and MDAG, it cites alignment with the Windows platform. For MV2, Microsoft points to MV3’s security and performance improvements and the availability of modernized extensions.

- [Independent Shortcut Keys]:The first row of the keys on the wireless keyboard are shortcut ones, which cover the functionality like screenshot, lock screen, volume adjustment, etc. These keys work independently and do not rely on the combination with the Fn key.
These changes therefore should not be read as evidence that every retired tool is being replaced by Copilot, or that all users will lose the same capabilities at once.
