To connect with developers around the world on GitHub, start at the GitHub Community page. It brings together discussions and other ways to participate, with a simple invitation: “Ask questions, get answers, share expertise.”

What is the GitHub Community Forum?

GitHub Community is an online, discussion-led space powered by GitHub Discussions. It is intended for support, learning, collaboration, brainstorming, and sharing feedback and ideas. You can ask questions, help other developers, discuss GitHub projects, and interact with GitHub staff.

GitHub Discussions also supports individual project communities. Repository discussions can focus on one project, while organization discussions can cover a broader set of repositories. Depending on the community and its categories, conversations may include questions and answers, announcements, planning, polls, or input on a project’s direction.

The GitHub Community page is the clearest starting point. Alongside discussions, it links to product feedback, education and learning, events, meetups, and other participation resources.

How to take part and get useful responses

Ask a clear, specific question

Explain what you are trying to do, what you have already tried, and where you are stuck. A pointed question with relevant context is easier for others to answer than a broad request. Follow up with details when people ask for clarification; GitHub’s getting-started guidance describes the Community as a place to ask and answer questions, learn, and interact with GitHub staff.

Search first and choose the right category

Before starting a new discussion, search for an existing conversation on the same topic. If you find one, add useful details or support it there rather than splitting responses across duplicate discussions. Choose the category that best fits your question or idea: categories help index conversations so people looking for relevant answers can find them.

Answer generously and keep the exchange constructive

Share expertise when you can, and make your replies clear, respectful, and on topic. GitHub’s Community Code of Conduct calls for empathy and constructive collaboration. Critique ideas rather than people, and remember that participants may have different experience levels.

Share links with context

When a link helps explain a question or answer, say what it contains and why it is relevant. The Community Code of Conduct cautions against unsolicited promotional links and links posted merely to drive traffic.

Choose Discussions for conversation and Issues for tracked work

Use Discussions when you want an open-ended conversation: to ask for advice, exchange ideas, gather community input, or talk about a project’s future. Use an Issue when there is concrete work to track, such as a bug report or a specific task. A discussion can help clarify an idea; if it leads to actionable work, move that work into an issue so it can be tracked.

Sharing product feedback

GitHub invites users to share product ideas and feedback in public Community discussions. Other users can view, comment on, and upvote a discussion, and the Product team reads and evaluates feedback. Most product areas have their own feedback category, so select the one that matches your suggestion. GitHub does not guarantee a response to every discussion. GitHub Enterprise customers are directed to GitHub Support for feedback.
