A processor is a hardware component that executes instructions and calculations. In everyday computer discussions, “processor” usually means the central processing unit (CPU), which runs operating-system and application instructions and coordinates general computing tasks. CPUs are only one kind of processor: GPUs, NPUs, FPGAs, and ASICs are designed for different workloads or purposes.

What does a processor do?

Software provides instructions and data for a processor to work on. The CPU carries out operations, makes decisions, and produces results that other parts of the system can use. Intel describes the processor as “the brain of your computer”; that is a useful shorthand, but its practical role is executing instructions and coordinating computing activity.

A simplified way to understand CPU operation is to imagine it fetching an instruction, interpreting what it calls for, and carrying it out. This is a conceptual model, not a claim that every modern processor handles every instruction in a simple one-at-a-time sequence.

The CPU works with other components rather than doing everything alone. For example, RAM temporarily holds information the processor needs. The CPU executes instructions; RAM stores working information for quick access. More RAM does not automatically make the CPU itself faster in every task.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What kinds of processors are there?

“Processor type” can describe either a chip’s role and design or the kind of system it is intended for. These are separate ways to classify processors: a computer can contain multiple processing types, while a CPU may also be described by its target system.

By workload or processing role

Type Typical role
CPU General-purpose control and computing, including running operating-system and application instructions.
GPU Graphics and parallel workloads; it can also be used for certain compute and AI tasks. It often complements the CPU.
NPU Specialized AI inference tasks, such as voice recognition or image classification.
FPGA Reprogrammable hardware suited to specialized jobs.
ASIC Task-specific integrated hardware designed for its target job.

These are not mutually exclusive alternatives. A system may combine a CPU with a GPU and an NPU, for example, assigning different kinds of work to each. FPGA and ASIC describe different design approaches: one is reprogrammable, while the other is built for a specific task.

By the system that uses the CPU

  • Desktop CPUs are intended for desktop computers. Intel’s desktop processor support information also describes boxed desktop processors as products for people building systems.
  • Mobile or laptop CPUs are designed for laptop form factors. Intel’s form-factor description includes a built-in battery, display, keyboard, and pointing interface.
  • Server CPUs are used for server workloads; the right priorities depend on the application and system requirements.
  • Workstation CPUs may be chosen for professional work such as rendering or computer-aided design (CAD).
  • Embedded CPUs are used inside embedded systems and devices, where the processor is part of a purpose-built product.

Where do processors get used?

Everyday activities such as browsing, office work, and general multitasking rely on CPU work. Gaming and content creation can draw on both CPU and GPU resources, with the balance depending on the task and system. AI-enabled devices may divide work across a CPU, GPU, and NPU. Servers and workstations serve different needs: a server’s priorities depend on its services, while a workstation may be configured for rendering, CAD, or other professional workflows. Embedded processors serve the particular needs and constraints of their devices.

These examples describe common roles, not a guarantee that any particular processor will meet a performance target. The chip, software, memory, power limits, cooling, and overall platform can all affect results.

What matters when comparing processors?

There is no single specification that determines how fast a processor will feel in every situation. Compare processors in the context of the work and system they will serve.

  • Workload: Everyday use, gaming, content creation, server services, CAD and rendering, and local AI can place different demands on a system.
  • Core design and configuration: Core count can matter, as can whether a chip combines cores aimed at performance with cores aimed at efficiency. Core count alone is not a universal performance score.
  • Graphics and acceleration: Check whether the system uses integrated graphics, a separate GPU, an NPU, or some combination suited to the intended tasks.
  • Power and thermal limits: These are especially relevant to battery-powered laptops, compact computers, and sustained workloads.
  • Platform compatibility: A desktop CPU must be supported by its motherboard and platform. Verify compatibility for the exact parts before choosing them.

Clock speed can offer context, but it does not by itself predict real-world performance across different processors. Vendor explainers can help clarify terminology and intended use; they are not independent benchmark comparisons. A sound comparison should use performance evidence for the exact models and workloads that matter to you.
