A hybrid work schedule divides work between a workplace and a remote location, but it does not set one standard number of office days. An employer might assign fixed office days, let employees choose days to meet a weekly minimum, or vary attendance according to the job. A three-days-remote, two-days-in-office week is one possible arrangement—not a universal rule.
Common hybrid work schedule models
The main difference between hybrid schedules is who decides when employees work on-site and how consistently those days repeat. The examples below describe common arrangements; an employer’s policy determines the actual schedule.
Fixed weekly split
The employer sets both the number of workplace days and the days themselves. For example, a schedule could put employees in the workplace on Tuesday and Wednesday and have them work remotely on the other three weekdays. Acas gives a three-days-at-home, two-days-in-the-workplace week as an example of hybrid working: Acas’s hybrid working guidance.
Fixed office or anchor days
Employees attend on the same days each week, sometimes called anchor days. Recurring days make it easier for colleagues to plan shared work and know when they are likely to see one another in person. Canada’s Department of National Defence describes fixed-days arrangements as one option in its workplace wellness guidance.

Flexible days chosen by the employee
The employer sets a required number of workplace days, but employees choose which days to attend. For instance, a person might need to be in the office three days per week and select those days around their work and personal commitments. The Australian Government’s National Mental Health Commission describes this kind of flexible split in its hybrid working guide.
Some fixed days, some flexible
A schedule can combine required shared days with employee-selected attendance. A team might have one or two set days for collaboration, with employees choosing any remaining days needed to meet the on-site requirement. The Canadian guidance also describes combinations of fixed and flexible days.

Attendance based on operational needs
Some roles require more frequent on-site work because of the tasks, equipment, safety requirements, or services involved. A department’s guidance may allow a position to require up to five on-site days when operations demand it; that is a role-specific example, not a definition of hybrid work for all employers. Other policies allow required attendance to change from week to week as operational needs change.
Minimum attendance with occasional workplace days
An employer may set a minimum number of days on-site while allowing employees to choose when to meet it. At the other end of the range, Acas gives an example involving at least one workplace day and remote work for the rest of the week. Some employers describe arrangements with infrequent visits as remote-first, but terminology varies.

What do hybrid schedules look like in practice?
These sample weeks show how the models can differ. They are illustrations, not standard schedules or a promise that a particular employer offers them.

How many days a week do hybrid employees go to the office?
There is no universal office-day count. Gallup reported that hybrid workers in its 2023 research averaged 2.6 office days per week. That is an average for Gallup’s studied group, not a requirement or a benchmark that applies to every country, industry, team, or employer. The same research reported different policy arrangements: 31% of hybrid employees had full autonomy to choose their weekly office schedule; 10% were encouraged, but not required, to follow guidelines; 28% were required to attend on specific days; and 22% had to be on-site a minimum number of days but could choose which days. A separate UK Department for Work and Pensions employer survey reported that 39% of surveyed employers offered hybrid working and 77% offered flexibility in working hours in 2024. These figures describe what employers in that survey said they offered, not the share of workers who personally used each arrangement. - Team overlap: Fixed or anchor days can make shared meetings and collaboration easier to plan. With employee-chosen days, teams may need to coordinate explicitly so the right people are in the workplace at the same time.
- Job tasks and equipment: Some duties can be done remotely; others depend on specialist equipment, in-person services, or workplace facilities.
- Space and safety: Office capacity, accommodation needs, and safety considerations can influence which days or roles can be on-site.
- Autonomy and boundaries: Different models can affect employees’ control over their schedules, visibility, relationships, work-life boundaries, and clarity about roles. These are considerations, not guaranteed outcomes for every team.
What should a hybrid work policy make clear?
Before planning around a schedule, check the written arrangement rather than assuming that “hybrid” means a particular split. U.S. Office of Personnel Management guidance recommends clarifying core details such as the schedule, how changes are handled, hours, communication expectations, and notice for required reporting in a written agreement. Its telework agreement guidance is a U.S. federal source; employers elsewhere may follow different rules.
