If an Android update causes trouble, start with low-risk checks: restart the phone, check the update status and available storage, and test whether a downloaded app may be involved. Avoid a factory reset until you have verified a backup. Menu names and update timing vary by manufacturer and carrier, so use the device maker’s instructions when general Android guidance does not match your phone.
First, identify the problem and prepare safely
Note what changed after the update: whether it will not download, the phone feels slow or freezes, it repeatedly restarts, or battery use seems higher. The right next step depends on the symptom.
- Use Wi-Fi and charge the phone to at least 75% before attempting an update, as Google recommends in its Android update help.
- Do not assume every Android phone uses the same Settings path. Google directs owners of non-Pixel devices to their manufacturer or carrier for update information. Older devices may not be able to run newer Android versions.
- Prefer reversible checks before steps that erase data. Do not try button combinations or recovery procedures for another brand’s phone.
If the update will not download or finish
Open Settings and look for System or Software updates. On some phones, updates may be under About phone, and labels vary. Follow the status and instructions shown on your device rather than repeatedly tapping the update control.
Google says that when a download does not finish, Android automatically tries again over the next few days and sends another notification. That does not guarantee a particular completion time: availability and timing depend on the device, manufacturer, and carrier. For a device-specific schedule or a failure that persists, contact the manufacturer or carrier.

If the phone is slow, frozen, or unresponsive
- Restart the phone. Use the restart method in the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.
- Check for an update or status message. In Settings, find the system or software update area; the exact path varies by phone.
- Check free storage. Google’s general troubleshooting guidance says problems can begin when less than 10% of storage is free. This is a troubleshooting threshold, not a universal technical guarantee or an update-specific requirement. Remove or move files only if you know they are backed up or no longer needed.
- Test for an app-related cause. Use the manufacturer’s instructions to start Safe Mode. Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the problem goes away there, a downloaded app may be involved; investigate recently installed or updated apps. Safe Mode tests for app involvement—it does not repair the operating system update.
Storage and memory are different: storage holds items such as photos and music, while memory is used to run apps and the system. Clearing space addresses storage, not a general promise to fix every performance issue.
If the phone keeps restarting or crashing
Google’s general Android troubleshooting guidance includes recurring restarts and crashes. Check for system updates, available storage, and whether an app may be contributing. If those checks do not resolve the problem, contact the manufacturer.

If the phone is stuck in a boot loop or will not start, do not improvise a recovery-mode or rollback button sequence. Android brands and customized builds differ, and there is no single recovery procedure established for every device. Follow the maker’s instructions or contact its support team.
If battery use seems worse after an update
Google says that on Pixel phones, battery use is normally higher than usual after a software update while the device downloads, optimizes, and sets up the new software. Google does not establish a universal duration for this activity, and that Pixel-specific explanation does not show that every battery problem on every Android phone is normal. For persistent or severe battery symptoms, follow support guidance for your specific device.

Should you factory reset the phone?
A factory reset is an advanced step, not the default fix for an update problem. Google warns that it removes data from the phone and uninstalls apps and their associated data. Some data stored in a Google Account may be restorable, but do not assume everything is backed up.

- Verify that important data is backed up and that you can access the accounts needed to restore it.
- Consult the manufacturer’s current reset instructions for your model.
- Proceed only if you accept the data loss risk and simpler checks have not resolved the problem.
