Start by identifying the exact symptom and recording your PC’s GPU, game version, graphics API (DirectX 11 or DirectX 12), resolution, and graphics settings. Then check the game’s requirements, drivers, files, overlays, and background apps before assuming hardware is faulty. The right fix depends on the system and configuration; no single change guarantees a particular frame rate.
Identify the problem before changing settings
“Performance and graphics problems” can mean different things, and the game’s official support pages treat performance, crashes, resolution, NVIDIA HairWorks, and system requirements as separate topics. Note which symptom you have and when it began so you can choose a relevant fix rather than changing several things at once. See the official PC technical-support index.
- Low frame rate: the game consistently feels slow, especially at a particular resolution or graphics setting.
- Stutter or choppy play: movement or frame delivery is uneven, even if the average frame rate seems adequate.
- Long loading times: loading is unusually slow, including when loading a save.
- Crash: the game closes or fails to launch, including after loading a save.
- Visual or resolution problem: the image looks wrong, or the game is not displaying at the intended resolution.
Before troubleshooting, write down your GPU model, game version, whether you are using DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, output resolution, relevant graphics settings, and the precise symptom. Also note whether it began after a game update, driver update, or settings change. This record helps distinguish a general performance issue from a version- or configuration-specific fault.
Try the official first-line fixes for slow or choppy performance
CD PROJEKT RED’s performance guidance applies to PCs that meet the minimum requirements but still have low frame rates, slow or choppy performance, or long loading times. Follow its sequence, changing one item at a time where practical so you can tell whether the symptom improves.

- Clean-install the graphics driver. Use the NVIDIA- or AMD-specific driver path described on the official performance support page. If the problem started after a driver update, CD PROJEKT RED advises trying the previous driver and reporting the issue.
- Verify the game files. Use the file-integrity check available in the game launcher or platform where you installed The Witcher 3.
- Disable overlays or close the apps that provide them. The support page names Discord, Ubisoft Connect, and GOG Galaxy as examples. If you use an overlay, turn it off for a test launch.
- Close unnecessary applications before launching. In particular, test without hardware-monitoring apps and antivirus or anti-malware programs running in the background. Do not leave security software disabled as a permanent workaround.
- Contact CD PROJEKT RED support if the problem remains. Include a video if possible. If the issue occurs only in one location, include the relevant save file. The listed save directory is

For crashes, use the crash-specific checks
A crash is not the same issue as low frame rate or visual corruption. CD PROJEKT RED’s crash troubleshooting guidance recommends checking system requirements, closing nonessential applications, verifying game files, and clean-installing GPU drivers. It notes that an older driver might help; treat that as a troubleshooting possibility, not a guaranteed fix.
Check resolution and requirements when frame rate is low
Higher output resolution significantly affects frame rate, and performance also varies with the PC configuration, graphics settings, scene, and gameplay. CD PROJEKT RED says the FPS targets on its updated PC requirements page are based on its QA tests and may fluctuate. They are not a promise of the result on an individual computer.

Check that your system meets the requirements for the game configuration you are using, then test at your actual output resolution. If you lower resolution or graphics settings to diagnose a slowdown, change one setting at a time and compare the same area or activity. A large change in workload can help indicate whether settings are contributing, but it does not by itself diagnose a defective component.
Match known patch notes to the exact symptom
Some official patch records describe specific historical problems. They can help you recognize a match, but they do not establish that the same problem remains unfixed on every current installation.

- HairWorks and DirectX 11: CD PROJEKT RED announced a PC hotfix on June 6, 2024 for a crash after loading a save with HairWorks enabled on DirectX 11. See the June 6, 2024 hotfix announcement.
- DirectX 11 and certain AMD GPUs: the Patch 4.03 notes say a crash on launch or after loading a save on certain AMD GPUs was addressed. The notes also record the addition of Intel XeSS support. See Patch 4.03 changes.

For any apparent match, compare your game version, graphics API, GPU, and exact symptom with the note. Do not assume that every crash on DirectX 11, or every slowdown after an update, has the same cause.

If the official checks do not resolve the fault, send support a concise record of the configuration and the steps you already tried. For a location-specific issue, attach the save from %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves; a video can help show intermittent stutter, a visual artifact, or the point at which a crash occurs. Avoid replacing hardware based on an unspecified symptom alone: first establish the PC’s specifications and whether the problem persists after the software checks.
