Keep personal data and secrets out of Node.js logs by logging only the fields needed for diagnosis, then applying structured redaction as a backstop before events are written or shipped. Redaction rules for object paths will not reliably clean free-form messages, errors, or every output hook, so those paths need separate controls and tests.

Start by deciding what should never be logged

Do not copy entire request or response objects into log events for convenience. Build an inventory of data that could enter logs through request bodies, headers, cookies, user profiles, database connection strings, errors, and child-logger bindings. Prefer an allowlist of diagnostic fields and remove unnecessary data at its source.

OWASP advises against directly recording session identification values, access tokens, passwords, sensitive personal data, database connection strings, encryption keys and other primary secrets, and bank or payment-card data. Names, phone numbers, email addresses, file paths, and internal network names may also need special handling depending on context. If identity is unnecessary, consider deleting, scrambling, or pseudonymizing direct and indirect identifiers. OWASP Logging Cheat Sheet

Decide what may be logged with your organization’s privacy and security owners. Redaction does not establish legal permission to collect data, determine retention periods, or resolve consent requirements; those rules depend on the jurisdiction and system.

Configure structured redaction in Pino

Pino’s redact option targets configured object paths. It supports nested and wildcard paths, censoring values or removing matched keys. Paths must reflect the event objects your application actually produces, and should be defined by trusted application code—not user input. The following is an illustrative schema, not a tested application; check behavior against the Pino version installed. Pino redaction documentation · Pino API

const pino = require('pino')

const logger = pino({
  redact: {
    paths: [
      'req.headers.authorization',
      'req.headers.cookie',
      'user.email',
      'user.phone',
      'payment.cardNumber',
      'session.id'
    ],
    censor: '[REDACTED]'
  }
})

logger.info({
  event: 'request.completed',
  requestId: 'server-generated-correlation-id',
  req: { headers: requestHeaders },
  user: currentUser,
  session: currentSession
}, 'request completed')

Use paths that match your application’s object structure. Pino documents bracket notation for keys containing hyphens, for example path["with-hyphen"]. A censor value keeps the field present with a replacement; removing a key omits it entirely. Choose between them based on whether downstream parsers and dashboards expect a stable schema and how much information they need.

Handle console output, messages, and errors separately

Node.js global console writes to process.stdout and process.stderr. Methods such as console.log accept multiple arguments formatted similarly to printf; an error passed to console.error can expose its message and stack trace. Audit direct console calls, template literals, interpolated values, exception handlers, and startup or shutdown diagnostics. Node.js Console documentation

Pino’s path-based rules cover structured object keys, not arbitrary text. Keep sensitive values out of free-form messages, thrown error messages, third-party service messages, and other strings that may contain personal data or tokens. Prefer stable event names and safe error categories to embedding raw user values.

Pino’s API also cautions against passing externally supplied objects directly as top-level log objects or child bindings. If such an object must be logged, place it under an application-controlled key, then sanitize and redact it. The project’s security guidance puts the safer default plainly: “As a matter of good security hygiene, prefer not to log untrusted data at all unless it is necessary.” Pino security guidance

Keep useful diagnostic context without full payloads

OWASP says application logs should record “when, where, who and what” for each event. Select fields for the monitoring and analysis purpose: for example, an event type, result, time, and a server-generated interaction identifier that connects events from one request or user interaction. Where identity is not needed, use an approved pseudonymous value or internal event identifier rather than a raw identifier. OWASP Logging Cheat Sheet

Minimize data before it reaches any destination. A hosted log platform may help centralize collection and management, but it cannot retroactively prevent an application from exposing sensitive data before collection. Review the full route from application output through stdout and stderr capture, local files, containers, collectors, retries, and temporary debug output.

Test the serialized output before shipping

Make redaction part of code review and security verification. Use unmistakable fake values for sensitive fields, serialize representative events, and assert that the values do not appear. These are recommended test cases based on path-based redaction behavior and OWASP logging guidance; they are not test results for a particular application.
