An HP Stream can run desktop Microsoft Office only if its exact Windows version and hardware meet the requirements for the Office edition you want. Check the model, available storage, and whether Windows is in S mode before downloading an installer. If your Stream runs ChromeOS, use Microsoft 365 in a browser instead.
Can I install MS Office on an HP Stream?
There is no single answer for every HP Stream: the name covers different laptops and configurations. Microsoft currently lists Windows 11 for its Microsoft 365 for home and Office Home 2024 requirements. Many older Streams shipped with Windows 10, so a laptop might fall short of the current requirements even if it can run Windows and has enough space.
For example, HP lists the Stream 11-r001tu with Windows 10 Home 64, 2 GB RAM, and 32 GB eMMC, while the 11-ak0292ng has Windows 10 Home in S mode, 4 GB RAM, and 64 GB eMMC. These are model-specific examples, not specifications for every Stream. Check the HP 11-r001tu specifications or HP 11-ak0292ng specifications only if one is your exact model.
Check your Stream’s Windows version, hardware, and free space
- Check the operating system and hardware: Open Settings > System > About. Note the Windows edition and version, processor, and installed RAM.
- Check available storage: Open Settings > System > Storage. Compare available internal space—not the drive’s advertised capacity—with Office’s free-space requirement.
- Identify the exact model: Find the product number on the laptop label or look up the device on HP Support. Use that model’s specifications rather than assuming all HP Streams are alike.
- Check S mode: In Windows Settings, look under System > Activation for the S mode status and switching option.
- Compare your results with the requirements for your Office edition: Check both the operating-system requirement and the hardware figures below. Meeting RAM and storage figures alone does not establish compatibility.
Compare the current Windows requirements
These are Microsoft’s listed requirements for the Windows versions of the named products. Microsoft’s current pages specify Windows 11 for both; the figures do not guarantee that a particular Stream can run either product.

What Windows 11 eligibility means for an older Stream
Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimums include 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage, alongside other processor, firmware and security, graphics, display, and connectivity requirements. A device meeting the RAM and storage minimums is not automatically eligible; check the complete Windows 11 system requirements. Microsoft recommends checking eligibility with PC Health Check or Windows Update.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Check your laptop’s Windows 11 eligibility before treating an Office installation as the only decision.
How S mode affects Office installation
Windows in S mode restricts app installation to Microsoft Store apps. If the desktop Office installer you need is not available there, switching out of S mode allows apps from other sources. Microsoft says the switch is free, but one-way: you cannot return to S mode, and you lose its security and performance benefits. Read Microsoft’s S mode switching guidance before changing it.

- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Find the option to switch out of S mode and select the link to open the Microsoft Store page. Do not select the separate Windows edition upgrade option.
- On the Store page titled Switch out of S mode, select Get. Switching is free, but the change cannot be undone.
For the specific legacy case Microsoft documents, error codes 31-BOOTSTRAPPER_PREREQ-office_version and 29-BOOTSTRAPPER_PREREQ-office_version can occur when installing Office builds below version 1902 on Windows 10 S. Microsoft’s stated remedies are switching out of S mode or trying a newer Office build. See its error-code guidance; those remedies do not explain every Office installation error.
Install desktop Office if your Stream meets the requirements
Once you have confirmed the operating system, hardware, free space, and S mode status, use the setup route for the license you have. Microsoft 365 is subscription-based. Office suites such as Office Home 2024 are one-time purchases for a single PC or Mac.

- For a Microsoft 365 subscription, go to Microsoft 365 setup or your Microsoft account, then sign in with the account associated with the subscription.
- For a one-time Office purchase, go to Office setup or your Microsoft account and follow the setup instructions for that purchase.
- Follow Microsoft’s prompts to download and install the apps. If installation fails, check the displayed error against Microsoft’s support guidance rather than assuming S mode is the cause.
Use Word and other Microsoft apps in a browser
If desktop installation is unsuitable, Microsoft 365 web apps are an alternative on a supported browser. Microsoft’s Chromebook guidance lists Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive, and Outlook. Signed-in Microsoft account users can view and do basic editing; subscribers can access more advanced editing features. See Microsoft’s Chromebook guidance.
This is also the route for a Stream running ChromeOS: Microsoft says Windows or Mac desktop versions of Microsoft 365 or Office 2016 cannot be installed on a Chromebook. Open Microsoft365.com to use the web apps. Do not follow Windows installer or S mode steps on a ChromeOS device.

Choose the option that fits your Stream

Choose based on whether you need desktop-only features or offline use, whether the laptop meets the edition’s requirements, and whether you prefer a subscription or a one-time purchase. Microsoft 365 Personal and Family are subscriptions; Microsoft says they include premium productivity apps and 1 TB of cloud storage per user. Cloud storage does not replace the free internal disk space required to install desktop apps.
