Microsoft Designer is a web and mobile generative AI graphic design app for creating images, social posts, invitations, and other personal projects. The free tier includes AI creation and editing with monthly credits, while consumer terms restrict the service to personal, non-commercial use; access and features vary by account, age, region, and rollout.
Designer combines text-to-image generation, AI-assisted layouts, templates, photo editing, text generation, background removal, object erasing, resizing, and Microsoft 365 integrations. The fastest way to begin is to open Designer, sign in with a personal Microsoft account, choose an AI, template, editing, or blank-canvas workflow, and refine the result manually before downloading it.
Key takeaways
- Microsoft Designer is a standalone web and mobile app for AI-generated images, editable graphics, templates, and lightweight photo editing.
- The free Designer tier uses monthly AI credits; Microsoft says eligible Designer and Copilot interactions can share the same credit balance.
- Microsoft 365 Personal and Family provide higher AI usage, but a subscription does not automatically grant commercial-use rights for consumer Designer.
- Important wording should be added with editable text boxes because AI-generated text can be misspelled or appear in the wrong language.
- Microsoft’s consumer terms describe Designer as personal-use software, so paid client work, business advertising, merchandise, and monetized content require careful licensing review.
What is Microsoft Designer?
Microsoft Designer is a generative AI graphic design app that turns descriptions, templates, and uploaded images into editable visual content. Designer can create images and layouts from text, suggest or rewrite copy, remove unwanted objects, remove or blur backgrounds, resize designs, and produce formats such as social posts, invitations, greeting cards, banners, stickers, collages, wallpapers, avatars, and digital postcards.
Designer is best understood as a fast, beginner-friendly creation and editing tool rather than a complete replacement for professional desktop publishing, advanced illustration, detailed photo compositing, or brand-management software. The Microsoft Designer overview describes the app’s current creation, editing, sharing, and Microsoft application integrations.

| Templates and ideas | Beginning with a prebuilt format or visual direction | Not every template element is necessarily editable in the same way |
| Image editing | Cropping, rotating, filtering, adjusting, restyling, framing, and resizing photos | Fine retouching and precise compositing remain limited |
| Generative erase | Removing unwanted people, objects, or distractions | Complex backgrounds may produce visible distortions |
| Text tools | Generating copy and rewriting existing text boxes | Generated copy is a draft and must be proofread |
Is Microsoft Designer free?
Microsoft Designer has a free tier, but free does not mean unlimited AI generation. Microsoft says AI creation and editing consume monthly credits, and credits refresh at the start of each month. Microsoft also says one credit is deducted for each eligible Copilot or Designer interaction, although the exact quota and accounting can depend on the account, plan, region, and current policy. See Microsoft’s current Designer and Microsoft 365 information before relying on a specific allowance.

U.S. Microsoft product-page results captured on August 18, 2026 showed Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year and Microsoft 365 Family at $12.99 per month. Prices, promotions, taxes, annual billing, and regional availability can change, so check the official product page at publication time.
How do you access Microsoft Designer?
The normal access path is a personal Microsoft account, although Microsoft’s support pages are not completely consistent about whether a free Microsoft account is sufficient or whether a personal Microsoft 365 account is required. Availability can vary by region, age requirement, account type, subscription, and staged feature rollout.
- Open https://designer.microsoft.com/.
- Sign in with a personal Microsoft account.
- Accept any applicable service terms or consent prompts.
- Choose an entry point such as Create with AI, Edit with AI, Design from scratch, a template, or a suggested idea.
- Describe the design or select a format, then generate or open the canvas.
- Adjust the result and download, copy, share, or save it.
Designer also has mobile availability through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Microsoft’s current interface can differ between web and mobile, and exact labels may change as Microsoft migrates users to newer editor experiences.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWork, school, and enterprise accounts may not have the same access as personal accounts. Microsoft’s overview documentation says enterprise access is unavailable in the described consumer experience. If Designer or a particular feature is missing, try a personal account, sign out and back in, and compare the web and mobile versions before assuming the service is unavailable everywhere. Age restrictions for generative AI also vary by region.
How do you create a design with AI?
Microsoft Designer’s AI creation workflow starts with a format and a description, then opens the generated result for manual editing. Use Create with AI or the equivalent creation option on the home page.
- Choose a starting point. Select a suggested idea or enter a custom prompt.
- Define the purpose. Say whether the result is a square social post, invitation, wallpaper, banner, card, or another format.
- Describe the visual. Include the subject, setting, composition, colors, mood, and style.
- Reserve space for copy. Tell Designer where a headline, date, or logo should go, but avoid asking the illustration itself to render important wording.
- Select Generate. Compare the returned options rather than accepting the first result automatically.
- Open the best result in Edit. Correct spacing, colors, cropping, text, and visual defects on the canvas.
- Export or share. Download the finished design, copy it, share it, or save it for later editing.
A practical prompt formula is:
Create a [format] for [audience/use]. Show [subject] in [setting], with [composition], [color palette], [mood], and [style]. Leave clear space for [headline or logo]. Avoid [unwanted elements].
For example:
Create a square social post for a neighborhood book club. Show a stack of colorful novels beside a coffee cup on a warm wooden table, with soft morning light, a welcoming editorial style, and empty space at the top for a date. Avoid readable text inside the illustration.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Microsoft says users can share a prompt as a template so other people can create similar images. Generated lettering can still be misspelled or appear in the wrong language. Put names, dates, addresses, prices, URLs, and calls to action in editable text boxes instead of trusting text drawn inside the generated image.
When should you use a template instead of a prompt?
Use a template or design idea when you already know the type of graphic you need and want a more structured starting layout. Search the Designer home page for a format or theme, choose an existing template or an Explore ideas example, and replace the sample content.

- Search for a format such as an invitation, social post, banner, greeting card, collage, wallpaper, or sticker.
- Open a template or idea that has the right general proportions and layout.
- Replace sample text and images.
- Change colors, fonts, size, and arrangement.
- Inspect every element before saving or exporting.
A template is usually more efficient than pure image generation when legible text and a familiar layout matter. A prompt is more useful for creating an original illustration or visual concept. Neither method removes the need to check whether all assets, wording, and design elements are suitable for the intended use.
How do you edit an existing image in Designer?
Choose Edit with AI, upload a photo or select an available image, and then combine ordinary editing controls with AI tools.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Edit with AI.
- Upload an image or select one from the available gallery.
- Use standard controls such as Crop, Rotate, Adjustments, Filters, Text, and Resize.
- Try AI controls such as Remove background, Blur background, Generative erase, Restyle, Frame, or Upscale where available.
- Zoom in and inspect edges, repaired areas, faces, hands, and text.
- Accept the result, undo it, or retry with a different selection or setting.
- Download, copy, share, or open the edited image on the Designer canvas.
Microsoft documents these editing options in its Windows image-editing instructions and Designer FAQ. Exact controls may vary by image, account, device, and current editor.
How does generative erase work?
Generative erase removes a selected object and uses AI to fill the surrounding area. Designer provides Quick select for automatically selecting an object and Brush select for manually painting the area to remove.
- Open the image-editing tools and choose generative erase or erase object.
- Use Quick select and click a clear object, or choose Brush select and paint over an irregular object.
- Use Start over if the selection mask is wrong.
- Choose Erase object to apply the removal.
- Choose Looks good to accept the result, or use the undo/retry controls if the fill is distorted.
- Use X to exit or Report to report a problem with the output.
If remnants remain, select a slightly larger area so the AI has more surrounding context. If nearby details disappear, use a smaller mask. Brush selection is generally more controllable around hair, fingers, foliage, patterned backgrounds, and objects that touch the subject. Several small passes can work better than one large removal.
How do you remove or blur a background?
Remove background isolates a subject, while Blur background retains the environment but reduces its visual distraction. Microsoft lists both functions among Designer’s image tools.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Automatic removal can struggle with fine hair, transparent objects, smoke, glass, lace, foliage, motion blur, low-resolution images, and foregrounds that have colors similar to the background. Use a higher-resolution original when possible, and place the cutout over a contrasting temporary background to reveal halos around hair, fingers, and other detailed edges.
How do you generate or rewrite text?
Designer can generate text from the canvas or rewrite text already placed in a text box. On the canvas, choose Text, describe the wording you need, and select Generate. For existing copy, select the text box and choose Rewrite to produce alternatives.
Generated copy is a draft, not a fact-checking or proofreading system. Manually verify every name, date, address, price, URL, spelling, tone, legal statement, safety claim, and call to action before publishing. For a poster or invitation, editable text boxes are safer than text embedded in an AI-generated illustration.

How do you resize a Designer graphic?
Resizing adapts a design to another social platform, card format, phone wallpaper, or custom canvas size where that option is available.
- Open the design on the Designer canvas.
- Choose the size or resize control.
- Select a target format or custom dimensions.
- Inspect the new arrangement rather than assuming the original layout transferred correctly.
- Reposition text, images, and logos manually.
- Check line breaks, alignment, margins, and cropping.
- Export a separate version for the new format.
Microsoft lists resizing as a current Designer capability, but preset names and available dimensions can change. Keep important content away from the edges and recheck every resized version before sharing.
How do you save, download, copy, or share a design?
After editing, Designer can offer several ways to keep or distribute the result: save it within Designer, download it to the device, copy the image for pasting into another app, share through supported Microsoft workflows, or send it to a phone through a QR-code option when that option appears.
Saved work can be reopened from My creations where that section is available. Microsoft says Designer components are supported in Teams, Outlook, Word for the Web, OneNote, and PowerPoint, although integrations and account availability can change. Download a local copy when the design matters, and keep separate exports for different destinations rather than relying on one resized file everywhere.
Can Microsoft Designer create a brand kit?
Microsoft’s FAQ describes an AI-generated brand kit containing a personal logo, brand voice, font, and color palette, with only one brand kit currently saved at a time according to that documentation. A generated logo or palette is a starting point, not proof of trademark clearance, originality, accessibility, or a complete brand system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Availability is especially uncertain because Microsoft’s welcome page announced deprecation of the legacy visual editor on October 20, 2025, while the current FAQ still describes brand-kit functionality. Microsoft’s pages therefore do not support one universal menu path. If the brand-kit control is missing, the account may be using the newer editor, the feature may not be included in the rollout, or Microsoft may have relocated it.
How do Microsoft Designer credits work?
Eligible AI interactions consume credits, and Microsoft says credits refresh monthly. Designer and eligible Copilot experiences can share the balance, so using Copilot elsewhere may reduce the credits available for Designer. A paid Microsoft 365 plan increases usage limits but does not necessarily provide unlimited generation.
Microsoft does not present one universally applicable monthly quota in the supplied documentation. The practical rule is to check the balance and plan information shown for the specific account. If credits run out, wait for the monthly reset or consider an eligible upgrade; do not assume that repeated generations remain free.
What are Designer’s privacy and provenance considerations?
Microsoft says it collects information about prompts and model responses to investigate harmful content, provide and improve the service, and support Designer, subject to Microsoft’s privacy statement. Avoid putting confidential client information, trade secrets, private addresses, or sensitive personal details into prompts.

Microsoft also says supported AI-generated and AI-edited images receive content credentials or provenance metadata based on the C2PA standard. Content credentials can help indicate AI involvement, but metadata is not guaranteed to survive every download, edit, screenshot, conversion, or social-platform upload. Provenance metadata also does not establish ownership, originality, trademark clearance, or permission to use a person’s likeness.
Upload sensitive photos only when you are comfortable with the service’s handling of those images. Review Microsoft’s Designer FAQ, current privacy statement, and applicable terms before using Designer for sensitive material.
Can you use Microsoft Designer for commercial work?
The consumer version of Microsoft Designer should not be treated as a general-purpose commercial design license. Microsoft’s consumer Designer terms state that the service is for personal use and not for use in the course of trade or commerce.
That restriction is relevant to paid client deliverables, business advertising, e-commerce artwork, monetized social content, commercial logos, merchandise, and work produced for an employer or customer. A Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription can provide higher AI usage and other Microsoft 365 benefits, but the subscription does not automatically resolve the consumer-use restriction.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are Microsoft Designer’s main limitations?
| Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|
| Very low barrier to entry | Less control than professional design applications |
| Fast AI ideation | Outputs may contain artifacts, inconsistent subjects, or poor typography |
| Free personal access | AI usage is credit-limited |
| Microsoft 365 integration | The experience depends on account, subscription, region, and rollout |
| One-click photo edits | Fine details may require repeated masking and manual correction |
| Brand-kit assistance | It is not a substitute for trademark, brand, or legal review |
| Cloud workflow | Prompts and responses are handled under Microsoft’s service and privacy terms |
| Easy social formats | Resizing can break line wraps, crops, and spacing |
| AI provenance support | Content credentials may not survive every transformation or upload |
Designer is a good fit for quick personal social graphics, invitations, AI visual concepts, simple photo cleanup, Microsoft ecosystem integration, and beginner-friendly resizing. Designer is a poor fit when you need advanced vector illustration, professional color management, detailed typography, multi-brand asset libraries, sophisticated approvals, print-production controls, batch automation, API access, or guaranteed factual and typographic accuracy.
How do you troubleshoot common Designer problems?
The app or a feature is unavailable
Missing access can result from using a work or school account, age restrictions, regional availability, subscription entitlement, staged rollout, or a temporary service issue. Try a personal Microsoft account, sign out and back in, and compare the web version with the mobile app. Do not assume every account displays the same menu.
Generated text is wrong
Use the generated image as a visual background, then add important wording with editable text controls. Proofread names, dates, addresses, prices, URLs, and calls to action manually.
Erase creates a strange patch
Use Quick select for simple high-contrast objects and Brush select for irregular shapes. Include enough surrounding background for the AI to reconstruct the area, work in smaller passes, and undo the result when a different mask would produce a cleaner fill.

Resize breaks the layout
Choose the target format early when possible, keep essential content away from edges, and manually reposition text and images after resizing. Export separate versions instead of expecting one layout to fit every platform.
Background removal leaves halos
Use a higher-resolution original, avoid strongly backlit or motion-blurred subjects, and inspect hair, fingers, transparent objects, and high-contrast edges against a contrasting background.
Credits disappear faster than expected
Designer and eligible Copilot interactions can share a credit balance. Check whether Copilot use on the same account consumed credits, then wait for the monthly refresh or review the plan options available to that account.
Which alternatives should you consider?
The right alternative depends on the workflow rather than on an unsupported claim that one app is universally best.
| Tool | Consider it when you need | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Canva | Template-led social graphics, presentations, and brand-content workflows | Plan limits, asset licenses, and commercial terms must be checked for the intended use |
| Adobe Express | Quick content creation connected to the Adobe ecosystem | May be more than needed for occasional personal invitations |
| Adobe Firefly | Generative image workflows within Adobe products | Not a complete substitute for a layout-first design editor |
| Adobe Photoshop | Detailed image manipulation and professional manual control | More complex and subscription-dependent |
| Affinity | Manual design and image-editing control | Less beginner-oriented and not primarily a generative-AI app |
Check each vendor’s current plans, asset licenses, and commercial terms before using an alternative for paid work. Designer remains compelling for personal Microsoft-account users who want quick AI-assisted graphics, but its credit limits, changing interface, account variation, and consumer licensing terms are central parts of the decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many free Microsoft Designer credits do you get each month?
Microsoft Designer provides monthly AI credits, but the supplied Microsoft documentation does not establish one universal quota for every account and region. Credit limits can depend on the plan, account, region, and current Microsoft policy, and eligible Copilot and Designer interactions may share the same balance.
Can I use Microsoft Designer images for a business or client project?
Do not assume that the consumer version of Microsoft Designer permits business or client work. Microsoft’s consumer terms describe the service as personal use only and not use in the course of trade or commerce, while a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription does not automatically grant commercial-use rights.
Why is a Microsoft Designer feature missing?
A missing Designer feature can result from an account type, age restriction, region, subscription entitlement, staged rollout, editor migration, or temporary service issue. Try a personal Microsoft account and compare the web and mobile versions, but do not expect every account to show the same controls.
Does Microsoft Designer’s AI-generated text always spell words correctly?
No. Text rendered inside AI-generated images can be misspelled or appear in the wrong language. Add important names, dates, addresses, prices, URLs, and calls to action with editable text boxes, then proofread them manually.
The Bottom Line
Microsoft Designer is an accessible way to create and edit personal graphics with generative AI, especially when you want quick prompts, templates, background tools, resizing, and Microsoft integration. Start with the free tier, monitor monthly credits, inspect every AI result, and treat the interface as account-dependent. For paid, client, business, or monetized work, review the applicable commercial terms before using the consumer service.
