Quick answer: The original 9Anime service rebranded as AniWave on August 2, 2023, and shut down in late August 2024. A website that now uses the 9Anime or AniWave name should not be assumed to be an official successor. The former AniWave community warned that post-shutdown sites making that claim were fake.
This guide explains what happened, how to recognize the risks of imitation domains, what may have happened to old watchlists, and how to watch anime through legitimate services instead.
What was 9Anime?
9Anime was a free, anime-focused streaming website that offered access to anime and other video content through embedded or linked streams. It was not a conventional licensed subscription service such as Crunchyroll. Contemporary reporting widely identified it as a major piracy platform.

The service reportedly began operating under the 9Anime name in 2016. Its popularity made the brand familiar to anime viewers, but the name alone never established that a particular stream was licensed, safe, or operated by the original service.

9Anime became AniWave in 2023
On August 2, 2023, 9Anime publicly rebranded as AniWave. Reporting at the time associated the change with legal pressure and the site’s visibility. The rebrand is important because many people searching for “9Anime” today are actually looking for the former AniWave service.
However, the historical connection should not be misused to authenticate later websites. A domain using the old name, logo, or interface may simply be copying the brand. There is no reliable basis for treating every later 9Anime- or AniWave-branded website as being run by the original operators.
When did AniWave shut down?
AniWave displayed a farewell message on August 27, 2024, stating that the service was gone and would not return. The message also warned users that websites claiming to be AniWave or 9Anime were fake.

The former site’s administrators did not publicly disclose a complete, definitive explanation of the internal cause of the closure, so it is more accurate to describe that enforcement context than to claim a specific legal outcome for AniWave itself.
Is 9Anime still operating?
The original 9Anime/AniWave service should be treated as permanently offline. The farewell announcement and contemporaneous reporting are stronger evidence than search results for domains that appeared afterward.
Do not interpret a search result, a familiar logo, or a copied website design as proof of authenticity. The former community’s warning was categorical: websites claiming to be 9Anime or AniWave after the shutdown were fake. No current 9Anime-branded domain was authenticated in the research for this guide, so this article does not publish a list of alleged “working” domains.

Why imitation 9Anime sites are risky
When a popular streaming service disappears, unrelated operators can reuse its name, artwork, layout, and search keywords to attract former visitors. A site presenting itself as 9Anime may be:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- a copied or unrelated unlicensed streaming service;
- an advertising or redirect network;
- a phishing page designed to collect account or payment information; or
- a site attempting to persuade visitors to install unwanted or malicious software.
That does not prove that every advertisement or pop-up on every unlicensed website is malicious. It does mean that the site’s ownership, licensing, advertising partners, and software are not automatically trustworthy. The U.S. Trade Representative has warned that illicit streaming markets can expose consumers to malware and other safety risks.
Never install a “player” to watch a stream
Be particularly cautious if an unverified site asks you to install any of the following:
- an APK or Android application;
- a browser extension;
- a desktop video player;
- a codec or “special” media package;
- a VPN application supplied by the streaming page; or
- a fake browser, security update, or system component.
A normal browser-based video does not require a random website to supply a special player. Use official apps obtained from the service’s own website or from the authorized app store for your device. Keep your browser, operating system, antivirus software, and device firmware updated.
Do not enter important credentials
Do not enter a payment-card number, email password, social-login credentials, or reused password on a site claiming to be the “new official 9Anime.” Even if the page looks familiar, the original service’s shutdown means the brand cannot authenticate the new operator.
Copyright and legal considerations for U.S. readers
In the United States, copyright owners control exclusive rights that include reproduction, distribution, public performance, and public display. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that unauthorized streaming can implicate multiple exclusive rights. It also discusses circumstances in which bypassing technological access controls can violate Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

The legal consequences depend on the conduct, the content, the jurisdiction, and the facts. This is not individualized legal advice, and viewers, downloaders, operators, and commercial distributors do not necessarily face identical exposure. As a general distinction, operating or commercially providing an unauthorized streaming service creates substantially greater legal risk than merely visiting a website, but neither security nor legal compliance should be assumed when a source is unauthorized.
A VPN does not turn an unlicensed source into a licensed one. It may also violate the terms of a legitimate service if used to access content that is not licensed in the viewer’s region. For example, Crunchyroll states that using a VPN to access content unavailable in a viewer’s territory is unsupported.
What happened to old AniWave watchlists?
Before closing, AniWave reportedly gave users instructions for backing up watchlists and moving data to services such as MyAnimeList and AniList. It also referenced MAL-Sync for synchronizing viewing history across supported services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThose instructions are historical. They should not be treated as evidence that the old AniWave export system remains available in 2026. If you still have an exported file or a browser backup, preserve it locally and import it only through the current official website or application for the destination service. Do not provide an old AniWave password to a third-party “recovery” site.

A free option: Crunchyroll Channel
Crunchyroll Channel is a free, curated, 24/7 anime channel available on select platforms, including supported LG smart TVs, Vizio smart TVs, Amazon Freevee, Roku, and other compatible devices. It does not require an account or payment where available.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
It is not the same as the full Crunchyroll on-demand Premium catalog. A linear channel chooses what is playing, while an on-demand subscription lets you select from the titles licensed for your region.
Offline viewing
Some legitimate services offer downloads for offline viewing under particular plans and on particular devices. Crunchyroll documents offline downloads through its mobile apps and Nintendo Switch. It does not generally provide the same download feature on a Windows or Mac PC, so do not assume that a desktop browser subscription includes unrestricted file downloads.
Finding a specific title legally
No licensed service carries every anime in every country. Distribution agreements differ by territory, and rights can move between platforms. Search for the specific title in the official catalogs available in your country rather than relying on an old list of where a show “always” streams. A reputable availability guide can help, but confirm the result with the service’s own catalog before paying.

Simply opening a web page does not prove that your device is infected. Take the following steps if you downloaded software, entered credentials, or noticed unusual behavior:
- Stop interacting with the site. Close the tab and do not follow additional pop-ups or “support” instructions.
- If you installed an application or extension, disconnect the device from sensitive accounts while you investigate. Do not use the affected device for banking until it has been checked.
- Uninstall the suspicious software using the operating system’s normal application or browser-extension settings. If it will not uninstall normally, seek help from the device manufacturer’s support documentation or a qualified technician.
- Run a reputable, fully updated security scan. Keep the operating system and security tools updated before scanning.
- Change exposed passwords from a clean device. Start with email, banking, shopping, and password-manager accounts. Do not reuse the old password.
- Enable multifactor authentication wherever it is available.
- Monitor financial and online accounts for unfamiliar logins, transactions, password-reset messages, or new devices.
These are general risk-reduction steps. They are not a finding that any particular 9Anime clone contains malware, and no individual post-shutdown domain has been tested or authenticated for this guide.

A quick safety checklist
- Assume that a “new official 9Anime” or “real AniWave replacement” claim is unverified.
- Do not install APKs, extensions, media players, codecs, VPN packages, or executables offered by an unknown streaming domain.
- Never reuse an email or payment password on an unverified site.
- Use official applications and authorized app stores.
- Check title availability and licensing in your own country.
- Remember that a VPN does not make unauthorized streaming legal.
- Do not trust a copied logo or interface as proof of common ownership.
What is not known
The original operators’ identities, the complete technical infrastructure, a definitive legal case record, and the authenticity of post-shutdown 9Anime-branded domains could not be independently established from reliable primary sources. Those limits matter: there is no sound basis for predicting a return, naming a successor as official, or recommending a particular mirror.
Frequently Asked Questions

What is the safest legal alternative to 9Anime?
For a dedicated anime catalog, Crunchyroll is the most directly relevant researched option. Crunchyroll Channel also offers a smaller, curated, free 24/7 experience on supported platforms without requiring an account or payment.
Can I download anime legally for offline viewing?
Some licensed services offer offline viewing under specific plans and on specific devices. Crunchyroll documents downloads through its mobile apps and Nintendo Switch, but not generally through a PC browser.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: 9Anime became AniWave in 2023 and the original service shut down in August 2024. Treat every later site using the 9Anime or AniWave name as unverified, do not install software or enter credentials there, and use licensed services such as Crunchyroll or its free Crunchyroll Channel where available.
