If Microsoft Teams won’t open on your Windows PC, start by quitting any stuck Teams process and restarting Windows. Then use Teams on the web to get back to work while you try the less disruptive fixes below. Clear the Teams cache or use Windows’ Repair option before considering Reset or reinstalling; these are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.

Try these quick checks first

1. Quit Teams completely, then reopen it

Teams may still be running even when its window is closed. If its icon appears in the taskbar notification area, right-click it and choose Quit, then launch Teams again from the Start menu. Microsoft documents quitting and restarting the Windows app as a manual way to refresh Teams. Microsoft’s Teams sync guidance has the instructions.

2. Restart your PC

Save your work, choose Start > Power > Restart, and try Teams after Windows starts again. A restart is a general Windows troubleshooting step, not a Teams-specific diagnosis; it can clear a temporary issue without changing the app’s settings. Microsoft includes restarting the PC in its guidance for problems installing or removing programs: Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed.

3. Use Teams on the web while you troubleshoot

Open Teams on the web and sign in with your work, school, or personal account. Microsoft recommends the web app as a fallback when the desktop client has trouble. If the browser version works, you can continue using Teams there while you investigate the Windows app; that alone does not identify the cause of the desktop failure. See Microsoft’s Teams reconnection guidance.

Refresh Teams’ local app data

4. Clear the Teams cache

  1. Quit Teams from the taskbar notification area, if it is running.
  2. Open File Explorer, enter %appdata%MicrosoftTeams in the address bar, and press Enter.
  3. Delete the contents of that folder, then reopen Teams and sign in.

Microsoft says clearing this cache removes locally stored web-client cache, icons, thumbnails, local message history, display images, and add-ons. It does not remove the Teams installation, but you may need to sign in again. If the folder does not exist, do not assume the path applies to your installed client: Teams packaging and support guidance can change. Follow the current instructions for your client in Microsoft’s reconnection article.

Repair or reset Teams in Windows Settings

5. Run Repair, if Windows offers it

Repair is a lower-impact option than Reset, but it is not available for every app. Find Teams in Settings and open its Advanced options:

  • Windows 11: Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Select the three-dot menu beside Teams, then Advanced options > Repair.
  • Windows 10: Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Select Teams, then Advanced options > Repair.

Wait for Windows to finish, then try opening Teams. If you do not see Advanced options or Repair, skip this step rather than looking for an unrelated system repair. Microsoft describes the Windows paths and notes that the options vary by app in Repair apps and programs in Windows.

6. Use Reset only if Repair is missing or did not help

Return to the same Teams Advanced options page and choose Reset if Windows provides it. Reset is a stronger app-level action than Repair. Microsoft lists it as a next option, but its guidance does not specify exactly what a Teams reset removes, so do not assume that local app state will be preserved.

Update or reinstall the desktop app

7. Install an available Teams update

This step requires Teams to open far enough to show its update control. If it does, choose Update and restart Teams when prompted. Microsoft says the desktop app updates automatically when an update is available and Teams is idle; an update may therefore already be applied when you next open it. Details are in Update Microsoft Teams.

8. Uninstall and reinstall Teams

If the earlier steps fail, uninstall Teams through Windows Settings, then reinstall it from the same official source you originally used or the source your organization specifies. Microsoft includes reinstalling among its Teams troubleshooting options. On a work- or school-managed PC, check with your IT administrator before removing the app: your organization may control the installation or require a particular version. See Microsoft’s Teams reconnection guidance and its general installation and removal troubleshooting.

When the problem may be Windows-wide

9. Troubleshoot Windows only if other apps or updates are affected

If other apps also fail to open, or Windows Update is having problems, use the troubleshooter relevant to that broader issue or ask your IT administrator for help. Microsoft provides a Windows Update Troubleshooter guide. Avoid using Reset this PC just to fix an isolated Teams launch problem: Microsoft recommends considering less disruptive recovery options first, and some recovery choices can cause data loss. Windows 10 support status

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That lifecycle change is important for ongoing PC support, but it does not establish why Teams fails to open on a particular computer. The date is documented in Microsoft’s Windows app repair guidance.
