The most useful motorcycle gadgets solve a specific problem before, during or immediately after a ride. They do not make unsafe riding safe. Start with a correctly fitted, certified helmet and a repeatable tire inspection; then add electronics that match your valves, helmet, phone and riding partners.

For U.S. riders, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports 6,228 motorcyclists were killed in 2024, representing 16% of all traffic fatalities. Per vehicle miles traveled, motorcyclists were almost 27 times as likely to die and almost five times as likely to be injured as passenger-car occupants. Those figures explain why protective equipment and maintenance belong ahead of novelty accessories. The nine items below are a practical equipment map, not an independently tested ranking. Only some have model-specific evidence; the rest are tools or compatible devices you should choose for your own motorcycle and riding habits.

Put protection and inspection ahead of electronics

A gadget is worthwhile when it helps you notice a mechanical problem, communicate without taking your hands off the controls, or meet a clearly defined riding need. It is not a substitute for training, speed control, lane awareness or protective clothing.

NHTSA says a helmet carrying the DOT mark on its rear label indicates the manufacturer certifies compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 218. NHTSA does not approve individual helmets; it relies on manufacturer self-certification and enforcement testing. The agency recommends trying a helmet for proper fit and warns against novelty helmets. Its older Countermeasures That Work summary cites studies from 2003–2019 associating helmet use with a 22%–42% reduction in rider fatalities and a 41%–69% reduction in brain injuries. Those ranges come from the cited 2003–2019 studies, not a new 2024 measurement.

Before every ride, NHTSA advises checking tire pressure and tread depth. A monitoring system can help you notice pressure changes while riding, but it cannot replace that hands-on check.

The nine gadgets and tools that make sense

1. A properly fitted, DOT-compliant helmet

A helmet is the first purchase, not an optional gadget. Look for the DOT label associated with FMVSS No. 218, then verify that the shell and retention system fit your head evenly without pressure points. Keep the helmet on for several minutes in the shop; a fit that feels merely comfortable at first can loosen or create hot spots later. The chin strap should remain secure when fastened, and the helmet should not rotate freely when you move your head.

Do not select a novelty helmet because it is smaller or cooler. NHTSA specifically warns that novelty helmets do not provide the protection of a compliant motorcycle helmet. Style, integrated speakers and a dark visor come after certification, fit and an unobstructed field of view. Replace a helmet after a significant impact or when the manufacturer’s service guidance says its materials have aged.

2. A motorcycle tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS)

TPMS is the strongest gadget example for riders who want continuous information about a safety-critical condition. The motogadget mo.pressure system is described as two valve-mounted sensors that send data by Bluetooth to an app. The app can alert you when pressure diverges from a rider-set value.

The same U.S. product listing specifies Schrader/AV valve compatibility, IP68 certification and a claimed battery life of up to two years. Those are manufacturer specifications for that product, so confirm the current listing before buying. Check your motorcycle’s valve type and wheel clearance; a sensor that cannot be installed securely is not useful. Also confirm whether the app supports your phone’s operating system and whether you can see alerts through your normal riding setup.

Set alert thresholds from the motorcycle manufacturer’s recommended cold pressures, not from a random default. Treat an alert as a reason to slow down safely, inspect the tire and measure it with a gauge. TPMS detects pressure status; it does not identify every puncture, tread defect or wheel problem.

3. A separate tire-pressure gauge

A dedicated gauge is the simple companion to TPMS. NHTSA’s instruction to check pressure before every ride requires a measurement at the tire, ideally when it is cold and before riding has warmed the carcass. A gauge lets you verify a sensor reading, set pressure at home or a fuel station, and investigate a warning without relying on a phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a gauge whose fitting reaches both valve stems and whose scale covers your motorcycle’s recommended range. Keep it clean, protect it from impacts and compare it occasionally with a known reference. No particular gauge model, accuracy rating or price is specified, so treat those as purchase decisions rather than universal specifications.

4. A tread-depth measuring tool

Pressure is only half of NHTSA’s pre-ride tire check; tread depth is the other half. A small tread-depth gauge gives you a repeatable reading instead of relying on visual judgment. Measure the main grooves at several points around each tire, looking for uneven wear, exposed indicators, cuts, cracking or objects embedded in the tread.

Use the motorcycle and tire maker’s replacement limits for your decision. A gauge cannot tell you whether the carcass has internal damage or whether a repair is safe. If wear is uneven, damage is visible or the reading is near the limit, have the tire inspected by a qualified technician. No model-specific gauge, scale or accuracy claim is specified, so do not treat an unspecified tool as a precision instrument.

5. A Bluetooth helmet intercom

An intercom consolidates rider-to-passenger communication, bike-to-bike conversation and navigation audio in a helmet-mounted system. Interphone’s U-COM 3 product page says it connects compatible smartphones, GPS units and TFT displays, supports rider/passenger and motorcycle-to-motorcycle communication, offers up to 500 metres of communication range and provides up to 10 hours of battery life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those figures are manufacturer specifications for the U-COM 3, not a guarantee for every intercom or every terrain. Range can be affected by hills, traffic, weather, antenna orientation and the other rider’s equipment. Confirm that the clamp, adhesive mount or speaker position fits your helmet shell and that the people you ride with use compatible systems or a supported pairing mode.

“Bluetooth® 5.1 connectivity lets you manage conversations, phone calls, music and GPS navigation directly from your helmet.” — Interphone, U-COM 3 product description

Use the intercom to reduce the need to remove a hand from the controls or turn around to speak. Do not treat calls or music as a safety feature: keep volume low enough to hear traffic and disable distracting functions when conditions demand full attention.

6. A smartphone configured for riding tasks

A smartphone is often the control screen for a TPMS app and the audio source for an intercom. Before relying on it, configure navigation, emergency contacts and pairing while stationary. Enable a weather-resistant mount or store the phone where it can remain connected without obstructing instruments, controls or your view.

  • Smart Noise Reduction, 2 Phones Connected: FX-S motorcycle communication system utilizes CVC & DSP noise cancellation to effectively eliminate the effects of all types of noise and maintain the purest and clearest vocals. Supporting 2 phones connected, you can easily switch between them without frequently pairing

Keep notifications, incoming calls and voice prompts under control. A phone that constantly lights up or announces messages can create more distraction than convenience. Test Bluetooth reconnection after the phone and intercom have both been powered off; many pairing problems appear only after a restart. No universal motorcycle mount, waterproof rating or battery-life figure is specified, so select those features for your bike and climate.

7. A dedicated GPS unit when phone dependence is a problem

A standalone GPS can be useful if you want navigation without keeping your phone exposed or continuously active. The U-COM 3 documentation lists GPS connectivity, but compatibility is model-specific: verify Bluetooth profiles, audio routing and mounting space before purchasing either device.

Plan routes before moving, use spoken prompts only when they do not mask traffic sounds, and pull over for complex changes. A GPS cannot account perfectly for closures, surface hazards or rapidly changing weather. Carry a basic route backup, such as a printed map or downloaded offline data, when riding beyond reliable cellular coverage.

8. A motorcycle TFT display that integrates with your devices

Some motorcycles include a TFT display that can act as the central interface for a phone, GPS and helmet intercom. Interphone identifies TFT connectivity for the U-COM 3, but that does not mean every display, firmware version or helmet unit will expose the same controls.

Check the motorcycle manual for supported Bluetooth functions, pairing order and whether navigation, calls or media are allowed simultaneously. Update firmware only when the bike is parked and stable. Keep critical information—speed, warnings and fuel status—visible without digging through menus. A display is an interface, not a reason to add more notifications while riding.

9. A conspicuity or protective-clothing aid

Visibility equipment belongs on the practical side of the gadget list when it addresses a specific traffic environment. NHTSA publishes guidance on strategies to increase rider conspicuity and use of protective clothing at its motorcycle-safety countermeasures page. Depending on your riding conditions, that may mean reflective elements, high-visibility material or lighting designed for lawful use on your motorcycle.

Check your state’s equipment rules before adding auxiliary lights or reflective products, and make sure an accessory does not hide the plate, indicators or required lamps. Conspicuity aids support attention from other road users; they do not guarantee that a driver will see you. Choose equipment that remains visible in the weather and riding position you actually use rather than buying the brightest-looking item without checking fit and legality.

A compatibility-first buying checklist

  1. Write down the problem. Decide whether you need pressure monitoring, group communication, navigation, visibility or a measurement tool. If you cannot name the problem, postpone the purchase.
  2. Check the motorcycle. Confirm valve type, available mounting points, handlebar and instrument clearance, existing TFT functions and any restrictions in the owner’s manual.
  3. Check the helmet. Verify DOT/FMVSS No. 218 labeling, fit, speaker pockets, clamp space and whether the intercom can be removed without damaging the shell or liner.
  4. Check the other devices. Confirm phone operating-system support, GPS audio compatibility, TFT Bluetooth functions and the intercom systems used by passengers or riding partners.
  5. Install while parked. Route cables away from steering movement, hot surfaces and controls. Pair devices, set alert thresholds and perform a short stationary test before a road test.
  6. Carry a fallback. Keep a pressure gauge, basic route backup and enough battery for the ride. Electronics can lose power, disconnect or fail in weather.

A five-minute pre-ride routine

  1. Check the helmet’s condition, fit and retention strap.
  2. Measure cold tire pressure with the gauge and compare it with the motorcycle manufacturer’s specification.
  3. Inspect tread depth and look for cuts, cracking, embedded objects, leaks or unusual wear.
  4. Confirm the TPMS app has connected and that its baseline and alerts are sensible; do not ignore a warning because the app is convenient.
  5. Secure the phone, intercom and any visibility accessory, then verify that nothing blocks instruments, lights, indicators or controls.

This routine separates a useful gadget from a false sense of security. A TPMS can warn you while moving, and an intercom can make coordination easier, but only a physical inspection tells you what the tire and helmet look like before departure.

What these specifications do and do not establish

The mo.pressure product information describes it as a motorcycle-specific monitoring example, and the U-COM 3 product information describes it as a connected helmet-intercom example. Their specifications are manufacturer claims and should be rechecked for the exact model, region and current revision. These details do not show that one brand is best, that all nine items are necessary, or that a particular accessory improves crash outcomes.

Use the list as a decision framework: buy protective equipment first, add measurement tools for the inspections you will actually perform, and choose communication hardware only after confirming every connection in your riding group. If an accessory distracts you, interferes with controls or encourages you to skip a check, it is the wrong gadget regardless of its feature list.
