MagnetDL was commonly used as a broad torrent index, but a magnet link is not automatically legal or safe. What matters is the material being shared and whether the publisher has authorized its distribution. For legitimate downloads, the most dependable alternatives are usually official project pages and specialist repositories rather than another general-purpose index.
The six options below focus on public-domain material, research data, Linux distributions, and other publisher-authorized downloads. Availability, domains, torrent metadata, and seeder counts can change, so treat “working” as a point-in-time description—not a permanent guarantee.

format:"Archive BitTorrent"Open the item’s page and check that the torrent corresponds to the version of the file you intend to download. An older torrent can become obsolete when the underlying Archive item is modified. That does not necessarily mean the torrent is malicious; it means the metadata may no longer describe the current item.
Best choice when: you need public-domain media, historical material, openly licensed books, old software, or a large collection rather than a current operating-system installer.
2. Academic Torrents
Academic Torrents is designed for large research datasets and scientific knowledge. It reports more than 298 TB of research data, making it more useful for datasets than for ordinary consumer downloads.

Seed availability is the main failure mode. A dataset can remain listed while having very few active seeders—or none at all. If a transfer stays at 0% for a long time, check the dataset’s page and tracker status rather than repeatedly reinstalling your torrent client.
Best choice when: you need a machine-learning dataset, scientific archive, public research collection, or other very large academic file.
3. LinuxTracker
LinuxTracker indexes torrents for Linux distributions and related operating-system images. Its listing shows the torrent file, size, seeders (S), and leechers (L), which makes it easy to spot a release with no active sources.
It can be useful when an official project page is difficult to navigate, but an index listing is not proof that an ISO is authentic. After downloading, compare the image with the checksum published by the Linux distribution itself. For security-sensitive installations, also follow the project’s signature-verification instructions.

LinuxTracker has announced a tracker change for affected torrents. The announce URL is:
http://tracker.linuxtracker.orgIf you edit a tracker entry, retain any existing text after that URL as instructed by the site. In practice, however, do not alter a torrent casually: changing metadata incorrectly can prevent the client from connecting or invalidate the expected torrent information.
Best choice when: you want a Linux ISO through BitTorrent and understand that the official project’s checksum or signature is the authority you should trust.
4. Ubuntu official BitTorrent downloads
For Ubuntu, there is little reason to use a third-party index. Canonical publishes torrents on its official Alternative downloads page.

5. Debian official BitTorrent downloads
Debian’s BitTorrent page provides official torrents for installation and live media. It covers CD/USB images, DVD/USB images, and live images for architectures including amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, riscv64, and s390x.

Choose the image type based on how you will use it:
- Installation media: for installing Debian on a computer or virtual machine.
- Live images: for booting a usable Debian environment without immediately installing it.
- DVD images: for a larger offline set of packages.
Check Debian’s current distribution page before downloading because stable release numbers and image sets change. transmission-gtkThe Fedora 44 directory, for example, lists image names, release dates, and file sizes. Those directories are version-specific, so check that the release is still supported and that you selected the correct spin before starting.

How to use these alternatives safely
1. Install a reputable BitTorrent client
Use a well-known client downloaded from its official project or operating-system repository. A torrent client handles transfer metadata; it does not determine whether the content is lawful or trustworthy.
2. Prefer the publisher’s page
For Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora, start at the distribution’s own website. Use LinuxTracker as a convenience index, not as the final authority. For public-domain or research files, read the item or dataset’s licensing and project information.
3. Check seeders, but do not confuse availability with authenticity
A high seeder count usually improves download speed. It does not prove that the file is genuine. Conversely, a legitimate torrent with zero seeders may simply be unavailable until somebody comes online.
4. Verify downloaded images
For an operating-system ISO, compare its SHA-256, SHA-512, BLAKE2, or published signature with the value from the official distribution website. On Linux, a basic SHA-256 check looks like this:
sha256sum downloaded-image.isoCompare the printed digest character-for-character with the publisher’s value. For stronger verification, use the project’s documented GPG or signature-checking procedure as well.

5. Keep licenses in mind
“Magnet” describes a way of identifying torrent metadata. It does not grant permission to redistribute a copyrighted film, television episode, game, book, or music album. Download only material that is public domain, openly licensed, or explicitly authorized for torrent distribution in your jurisdiction.
Why these are not all like MagnetDL
MagnetDL was associated with searching a wide range of torrent listings. The legitimate sources above are more specialized: the Internet Archive serves its own collections, Academic Torrents focuses on research, and Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora distribute their own software images. That narrower scope is a benefit because the download source, license, and verification path are clearer.
There is no reliable “working” label for a torrent site. Pages can remain indexed after trackers fail, files lose all seeders, or the source item changes. A current official page is more useful than a supposedly permanent alternative list.
FAQ
Are MagnetDL alternatives legal?
Some are, but legality depends on the material and the rights to distribute it—not on whether the source provides a magnet link or a .torrent file. The six sources covered here are intended for public-domain, openly shared, research, or publisher-authorized content.
Is a magnet link safer than downloading a torrent file?
No. A magnet link and a .torrent file are different forms of torrent metadata. Neither one proves that the files being shared are legal, authentic, or malware-free.
Why does a legitimate torrent have no seeders?
Torrent availability depends on users currently uploading the data. A page can remain online even when nobody is seeding its torrent, or when its tracker information has become obsolete.
How can I verify a Linux ISO downloaded by torrent?
Use the Linux distribution’s official checksum or signature page. For a SHA-256 value, run sha256sum downloaded-image.iso and compare the result exactly with the publisher’s checksum. A large seeder count is not a substitute for verification.
