The best free backup software depends on what you need to recover. Restic and BorgBackup protect data in encrypted, deduplicated repositories; Veeam Agent and Clonezilla create system images; Time Machine and File History focus on convenient personal-file recovery. Tools such as rsync, rclone, and FreeFileSync can copy data effectively, but a mirror is not automatically a backup because it may reproduce deletions, corruption, or ransomware damage.
This ranking considers recoverability, reliability, platform support, version history, encryption, scheduling, restore options, and the limits of each free edition. Several entries are utilities or infrastructure products rather than traditional desktop backup applications, so their correct use case matters.

1. Restic
Best overall for technical users. Restic creates encrypted, deduplicated repositories on local disks, servers, and supported remote storage. It is cross-platform and resumes interrupted backups when the command is run again.
Recommended Free Tools
restic init --repo /srv/restic-repo
restic -r /srv/restic-repo backup /path/to/data
Restic has no built-in scheduler. Use cron, systemd timers, Windows Task Scheduler, or a wrapper such as resticprofile. Store the repository password in a secure password manager and keep a tested recovery copy: losing it makes the encrypted data irrecoverable. Linux users should also check the documented compatibility issues before placing a repository on a CIFS/SMB share.

2. BorgBackup
Borg is a strong choice for Linux and macOS users who want compressed, encrypted, deduplicated archives and precise retention policies. Pika Backup and Vorta supply graphical interfaces, but the underlying repository behavior remains Borg’s.
A common maintenance mistake is assuming borg prune immediately returns disk space. Pruning removes archives from the retention set; run borg compact afterward to reclaim unused repository segments. Preview destructive retention changes with borg prune -v --list --dry-run.
3. Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows Free
Veeam Agent is the strongest free Windows choice when restoring an entire computer matters. The standalone edition supports image-, volume-, file-, and folder-level backups to external drives, NAS shares, or a Veeam repository. It can create bootable recovery media on removable media or as an ISO.
Use it for a Windows recovery plan rather than just copying Documents. Create the recovery media immediately after installation and test that the computer can boot from it. Centralized management belongs to other Veeam products, not this free standalone edition.
4. Clonezilla
Clonezilla Live is a bootable imaging and cloning environment for offline recovery. It supports Windows NTFS and exFAT, macOS HFS+ and APFS, and many Linux filesystems. It is useful for replacing a disk or restoring a complete machine.
Its limitations are significant: it cannot create incremental or differential backups, it does not normally image mounted partitions online, and its images cannot normally be browsed for individual files. The destination partition must be at least as large as the source. Use Rescuezilla or a separate file-backup tool when single-file recovery is important.
5. Pika Backup
Pika provides a friendly GNOME interface over BorgBackup. It supports encrypted local, network, and remote repositories, schedules, archive browsing, and file or folder recovery. To configure a remote destination, use Setup Backup → Remote Location → Continue, choose encryption, and select Create.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Pika is a file-backup tool, not a complete system-imaging product. Pair it with a reinstall plan or a separate image-based recovery method.
6. Time Machine
Time Machine remains the easiest Mac option for recovering deleted files, older versions, and much of a Mac installation. In macOS Ventura and later, open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Time Machine → Add Backup Disk → Set Up Disk.
Time Machine normally retains hourly backups for 24 hours, daily backups for a month, and weekly backups after that, deleting older versions as space is needed. If encryption is enabled, the backup password is required for restoration, so do not lose it.
7. FreeFileSync
FreeFileSync works on Windows, macOS, and Linux and is particularly useful for external drives, NAS shares, local folders, FTP/FTPS/SFTP, Google Drive, and MTP devices. It supports versioning, batch jobs, and Windows VSS for copying locked files.
Also popular on Amazon
- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Configure it as a one-way backup with versioning rather than a two-way mirror. A mirror is faster and convenient, but it can carry accidental deletions and ransomware-encrypted files to the destination. RealTimeSync, listed separately below, can trigger these jobs whenever files change.
8. Duplicati
Duplicati is designed for encrypted, compressed, incremental backups to services including Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, SFTP, and WebDAV. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and is a good fit when the destination is cloud or object storage that you already pay for.
Check the release and deployment notes before upgrading. The 2.3 branch deprecated older OneDrive for Business and SharePoint backends in favor of Microsoft Graph. Its default AES format remains v2, while AES v3 is available for testing. New locked-down data-folder permissions can also break loosely configured Docker installations.
9. Rescuezilla
Rescuezilla adds a graphical interface to offline imaging and is compatible with Clonezilla images. It can restore or work with VDI, VMDK, VHDX, QCOW2, raw, and other image formats. It is easier to approach than Clonezilla for many users, while retaining the need to boot from external media.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Treat it primarily as an imaging and recovery environment, not as a replacement for routine versioned file backups.
10. AOMEI Backupper Standard
The free Standard edition supports Windows file, system, disk, and partition backups, scheduling, incremental jobs, local/external/network/NAS destinations, compression, image checking, bootable media, and command-line operations. It supports data-disk cloning but not system cloning in the free edition.
Differential backup, encryption, universal restore, and other advanced capabilities require a paid edition. Standard is listed for personal use, so businesses should check the license before deployment.
11–18: capable Windows and Linux file-backup applications
11. Windows File History
File History is built into Windows and maintains versions of personal files. Open Control Panel → System and Security → Save backup copies of your files with File History → Turn on. It can use an external drive or network location.

It primarily works with libraries. To include another folder, right-click it, choose Show more options → Include in library. To restore, open File Explorer, right-click the containing folder, and choose Restore previous versions. It is not a full system-image solution.
12. Windows Backup
The Windows 11 Backup app is useful for migrating settings and selected folders, not for creating a bootable image. Open Start → type “backup” → Windows Backup, expand Folders, and choose Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, or Music for OneDrive backup.
It can also preserve some settings, Wi-Fi information, and installed-app information through a Microsoft account. The free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of Microsoft storage, which is quickly consumed by large folders.

13. Déjà Dup
Déjà Dup is a straightforward GNOME file-backup interface. Current versions use Restic for new backups: backups first created with version 49.0 or later use Restic, while backups first created with 48.2 or earlier use Duplicity.
For a fresh installation, restore through Backups → Restore From a Previous Backup… → Search. On an existing setup, use Backups → Browse Backups. It does not provide complete bare-metal recovery.
14. Iperius Backup Free
Iperius Free supports full, incremental, and differential file backups, schedules, ZIP compression, filters, network authentication, scripts, email notifications, and NAS, USB, RDX, and network destinations. It permits unlimited jobs.
Do not attribute every Iperius feature to the free edition. Disk imaging, databases, virtual machines, tape, and many cloud destinations require paid editions.
15. Cobian Reflector
Cobian Reflector is freeware for personal and commercial use and handles local, network, FTP, and SFTP destinations. It supports compression, encryption, scheduled service operation, and 32-bit or 64-bit operation appropriate to the installed Windows system.

16. Areca Backup
Areca is an open-source Windows and Linux file-backup application supporting full, incremental, differential, and delta backups. Features include ZIP/ZIP64 archives, AES-128/AES-256 encryption, FTP/FTPS/SFTP, filters, archive merging, point-in-time recovery, reports, and command-line automation.
The project has a legacy, SourceForge-based feel rather than the maintenance profile of a mainstream modern application. Evaluate the current package and test restoration before making it a long-term dependency.
17. SyncBackFree
SyncBackFree handles basic Windows backup and synchronization to local and NAS targets, with scheduling in the broader product family. The free edition is primarily file-level; many cloud providers and advanced integrity features belong to paid editions.

FBackup uses a wizard-oriented Windows interface with backup definitions, filters, and scheduling. It is approachable for routine file jobs, but the free product exposes prompts for paid features. Confirm the installed edition before claiming encryption, advanced backup types, or cloud support.
19–23: specialist and centralized tools
19. MSP360 Free Backup
MSP360’s free edition is intended for personal use on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It backs up to storage you provide, such as local, network, or cloud storage. It is not an unlimited cloud-backup subscription; storage and provider charges remain separate.

20. Snap Backup
Snap Backup is a deliberately simple GPLv3 utility for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Unix. It suits scheduled personal file backups, but not full-system images, deduplicated repositories, or disaster-recovery workflows.
21. UrBackup
UrBackup is designed for a central server backing up multiple client computers. It can fit a home lab or small network, but requires separate server and client installation and more administration than a single-PC application.

Bacula is a full client/server backup platform with centralized scheduling, catalogs, retention, and multiple clients. It is powerful for larger deployments, but its architecture is excessive for one laptop or a small personal workstation.
23. Bareos
Bareos provides open-source, enterprise-style client/server backups across Linux and Windows environments. Expect to configure a server, catalog, storage, clients, schedules, and retention policies. It is infrastructure software, not a one-click desktop backup utility.

24. Timeshift
Timeshift creates Linux system snapshots for rolling back failed updates or configuration changes. In the GUI, use Settings → Schedule to configure daily, weekly, monthly, hourly, or boot-time snapshots, and Create for an immediate snapshot.
timeshift --list
timeshift --create --comments "after update" --tags D
timeshift --restore
Timeshift is not a complete personal-data backup. Protect /home and other user data with a separate tool.
25. rsync
rsync is a file-copy engine commonly used in Unix, Linux, and macOS scripts. A basic one-way mirror is:
rsync -a --delete SOURCE/ DEST/
The --delete option is dangerous because source deletions propagate to the destination. Preview the result first:
rsync -a --delete --dry-run SOURCE/ DEST/
For actual backup protection, combine rsync with dated directories, hard-link snapshots, filesystem snapshots, or another retention system.
26. rclone
rclone transfers files between local storage and many cloud or object-storage providers. Use rclone copy for safer one-way transfers and test with --dry-run. The rclone sync command makes the destination match the source and can delete destination files, so it is not inherently a versioned backup.
27. GNU tar
GNU tar creates portable archives and is useful in scripts:

tar -cJf backup.tar.xz /path/to/data
It does not provide scheduling, deduplication, retention, cloud transport, or automatic verification. Restore into a staging directory first because extracting an archive can overwrite existing files.
28. Windows wbadmin
wbadmin is a command-line Windows backup utility primarily relevant to Windows Server and administrative scripting. It is distinct from both the modern Windows Backup app and File History. Check that the command and required backup features are available on the specific Windows edition before automating it.
29. FreeFileSync RealTimeSync
RealTimeSync monitors folders and launches a configured FreeFileSync batch job when changes occur. This is useful for near-real-time copying, but it can reproduce a deletion or corrupted file immediately. Select FreeFileSync versioning rather than an unprotected mirror when historical recovery matters.
30. Vorta
Vorta is a graphical front end for BorgBackup. It can make Borg more approachable, but repository encryption, pruning, compaction, compatibility, and restore behavior remain Borg concerns. When troubleshooting, verify the Vorta package and Borg version together.
31–32: entries to approach cautiously
31. Macrium Reflect Free
Macrium Reflect Free should not be recommended as a current download. Macrium identifies Reflect Free v8.0 as the last free version, says it is no longer available to download, and states that security changes stopped after January 1, 2024. It supports Windows through Windows 11 version 22H2 only, with no promised support for later updates. Existing installations may still run, but it is obsolete for new deployments.
32. Legacy Windows Backup and Restore tools
Older guides often recommend “Backup and Restore (Windows 7)” as if it were the current Windows backup product. Modern Microsoft documentation separates Windows Backup, File History, and point-in-time restore. Identify the exact Windows version and tool name rather than using “Windows Backup” as a generic label.
How to choose the right free backup tool
- Decide what must be restored. Choose File History, Time Machine, Restic, Borg, or Duplicati for files and versions. Choose Veeam Agent, Clonezilla, Rescuezilla, or AOMEI for complete system recovery.
- Choose the destination. An external drive is simple, a NAS is convenient, and cloud/object storage helps with off-site recovery. Do not let the only copy remain permanently attached to the computer.
- Require historical versions. Avoid an unversioned mirror as the only backup. Retention, snapshots, archives, or immutable storage protect against deletion and ransomware.
- Protect credentials. Encrypted repositories are useless without their passwords. Store keys separately from the computer and document the restore process.
- Create rescue media when needed. Image tools generally require a bootable USB or ISO. Create it before a disk failure, not afterward.
- Test restoration. Restore several files to a temporary directory and perform a full recovery drill for system images. A successful backup job is not proof that recovery works.
A practical 3-2-1 setup
For important data, keep at least three copies, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site. A practical home setup might use Time Machine or File History for daily file versions, an encrypted Restic or Borg repository on a NAS, and a disconnected external drive rotated away from the computer. Windows users needing rapid whole-PC recovery can substitute Veeam Agent for the image component.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do not count a second folder on the same disk as meaningful redundancy. Also remember that synchronization tools, cloud drives, and RAID protect against some hardware failures but do not automatically provide historical recovery.
FAQ
What is the best free backup software overall?
Restic is the best overall choice for users comfortable with the command line because it provides encrypted, deduplicated, cross-platform repositories and can resume interrupted backups. Time Machine is easier for Mac users, while Veeam Agent is better for Windows bare-metal recovery.
Is Windows Backup the same as a full system image?
No. The current Windows Backup app mainly protects selected folders, settings, Wi-Fi information, some app information, and Microsoft-account data through OneDrive. It is not equivalent to a bootable full-disk image. Use Veeam Agent, Clonezilla, Rescuezilla, or another image-capable tool for that purpose.
Are rsync, rclone, and FreeFileSync proper backups?
They can be part of a backup system, but an unversioned mirror is not sufficient by itself. Commands such as rsync –delete and rclone sync can propagate deletions, corruption, and ransomware changes. Use versioning, dated snapshots, retention, or a separate offline copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan Macrium Reflect Free still be downloaded?
No. Macrium says Reflect Free v8.0 was the final free version, is no longer available as a current download, and stopped receiving security changes after January 1, 2024. Existing installations may work, but it should not be selected for a new backup deployment.
The Bottom Line
For most people, use the tool already integrated into the operating system only when its recovery scope is sufficient: Time Machine for Macs and File History for Windows personal files. Choose Veeam Agent for Windows system images, Restic or Borg for encrypted technical backups, and Pika Backup when you want Borg through a friendly Linux interface. Whichever tool you select, enable versioning, keep at least one copy offline or off-site, save encryption credentials safely, and perform a test restore.
