Short answer: the standard WhatsApp app does not offer a universally available “Schedule message” button for ordinary personal chats as of August 11, 2026. On an iPhone, you can use a time-based Apple Shortcuts automation. On Android, you can use a carefully vetted third-party automation app, although delivery may depend on permissions and phone settings. For businesses, WhatsApp Business offers scheduled broadcasts and automatic replies—but those are business tools, not a general scheduler for personal messages.
These options are not equivalent. A true scheduler queues a message and sends it later. A phone automation attempts to open WhatsApp or prepare the message at the chosen time. Business broadcasts and away messages follow separate business rules.
Before you start: what “schedule” means on WhatsApp
There are three different mechanisms that are often described as scheduling:
| Method | What happens | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone Shortcuts | Your iPhone runs a time-based automation that may open WhatsApp, prepare a message, or perform an available WhatsApp action. | Personal reminders and routine messages on iPhone | It is device automation, not a WhatsApp message queue. Some actions may still require confirmation. |
| Android automation app | A third-party app attempts to interact with WhatsApp at a scheduled time. | Delayed personal messages on Android | It may require accessibility access, an unlocked screen, battery-optimization changes, or other broad permissions. |
| WhatsApp Business tools | Business broadcasts or automatic replies are sent according to business features and rules. | Opted-in customer communication | Greeting, away, and broadcast features are not ordinary personal-chat scheduling. |
WhatsApp has been reported to be developing native scheduled messages, including controls for choosing a date and time and managing scheduled messages. However, the feature was still described as under development in beta reporting rather than as a stable feature available to everyone. Check your WhatsApp version and official release notes before assuming a native scheduler has arrived.

Method 1: Schedule a WhatsApp automation with Apple Shortcuts on iPhone
Apple Shortcuts can create a personal automation triggered at a specific time of day. Depending on your iOS version and the WhatsApp actions available on your iPhone, the automation may send a message, open WhatsApp with a prepared message, or stop for confirmation.
Set up the time trigger
- Open Shortcuts on your iPhone.
- Tap Automation.
- Tap the option to create a new personal automation. If you already have automations, tap the + button first.
- Choose Time of Day.
- Set the time at which you want the automation to run.
- Choose whether it should repeat Daily, Weekly, or Monthly. For a one-time message, use the available one-time option or delete the automation after it runs.
- Tap Next, then add a WhatsApp-related action if one is available on your device.
Choose the WhatsApp action
Search the action list for WhatsApp or use an action sequence that opens WhatsApp and prepares the message. The exact actions can vary by iOS version, WhatsApp version, and what WhatsApp exposes to Shortcuts.
Before saving, read the complete action sequence. Confirm that it targets the correct contact or group, contains the correct text, and does not accidentally use a previous recipient or copied message.

Review unattended execution
- On the automation summary screen, review the trigger and actions.
- If the option appears, turn off Ask Before Running only after confirming that the particular actions support unattended execution.
- Complete the setup and leave the automation enabled.
Disabling Ask Before Running does not guarantee that every WhatsApp workflow will send silently. Some actions or app interactions can still require the phone to display a prompt or for you to confirm the final step.
Test it safely
Schedule a low-stakes message to yourself or a consenting contact a few minutes in the future. Check what actually happens: whether WhatsApp opens, whether the message is merely prepared, whether a confirmation appears, and whether the message is delivered while the phone is locked.
Important iPhone limitations
- Shortcuts is not WhatsApp’s own scheduler. It runs an automation on your iPhone rather than placing a message in WhatsApp’s server-side queue.
- Background delivery is not guaranteed. The result depends on the action, iOS, WhatsApp integration, and device state.
- Automations are device-specific. Personal automations may be backed up to iCloud, but they do not automatically synchronize as active automations across all your Apple devices.
- Updates can change behavior. An iOS or WhatsApp update can rename, remove, or restrict an action.
Best use: recurring personal messages or reminders where you can tolerate a test-and-confirm workflow. Do not rely on an untested Shortcut for an urgent, sensitive, or time-critical message.
Method 2: Use an Android WhatsApp scheduler or automation app
Android does not provide a WhatsApp-native scheduling button through the standard WhatsApp app in the reviewed information. Android users therefore commonly use a third-party scheduler or automation tool. Examples reported in how-to coverage include SKEDit and SMS Auto Reply / Scheduler, but naming an app does not make it official, secure, reliable, or compatible with every Android phone.

If you are comparing an Android WhatsApp scheduler, treat it as software with significant access to your phone and possibly your messages—not as a simple calendar utility.
Vet the app before installing it
Open the app’s current Google Play listing and check all of the following:
- Developer identity and contact information
- Recent update history
- Recent reviews, especially reports about failed delivery or account problems
- Privacy disclosures and the data the app says it collects or shares
- Requested permissions, including accessibility access, notification access, overlay or “display over other apps” permission, and battery or background-operation requests
- Whether the app is still available from a reputable official store
- Whether its terms prohibit spam, bulk abuse, or other activity that could put your WhatsApp account at risk
Do not install an APK from an unknown download site merely because it promises fully automatic sending. A scheduler that can read screen content, control taps, or display over other apps can create a larger privacy and security risk than the original scheduling problem.
Typical Android setup
- Install a scheduler or automation app from a reputable store after reviewing its current listing and permissions.
- Open the app and choose WhatsApp as the target.
- Select the contact or group. Verify the recipient carefully; group messages are particularly easy to send to the wrong audience.
- Enter the message text.
- Set the date and time, including the correct time zone if the app offers that option.
- Follow the app’s instructions for accessibility access or other permissions. Grant only access you understand and are comfortable with.
- Review Android’s battery settings. If the scheduler says battery optimization must be excluded, understand that this allows the app to run more freely in the background.
- Check whether the screen must be unlocked, the phone must be awake, or WhatsApp must remain logged in.
- Schedule a test message to yourself and observe the result.
Why Android scheduling can fail
- The phone is powered off, has no battery, or is in a restrictive power-saving mode.
- The phone has no internet connection at the scheduled time.
- WhatsApp is logged out, disabled, updated, or no longer installed.
- Android has stopped the scheduler in the background.
- Battery optimization has interrupted the app.
- The screen is locked when the automation needs to tap through WhatsApp.
- Accessibility, overlay, notification, or other required permission has been revoked.
- A WhatsApp or Android interface change has broken the automation steps.
Some tools do not truly queue and transmit a message independently. Instead, they wait until the scheduled time and simulate the actions a person would take. That is why a phone may need to be powered on, connected, unlocked, and able to display WhatsApp.
Privacy warning: accessibility-based automation may be able to observe or control visible content on the screen. Do not grant that access casually, and remove the app and revoke its permissions if you stop using it. There is no basis for calling a particular third-party scheduler safe or officially endorsed without checking its current permissions, privacy policy, store status, and track record.
Method 3: Use WhatsApp Business scheduling and automatic replies
If you operate a business, WhatsApp Business can address several scheduling-related needs. These features are designed for customer communication and are not a replacement for scheduling an ordinary personal message to a friend.
Scheduled business broadcasts
WhatsApp Business describes business broadcasts as private, one-to-one messages sent to multiple people, with scheduling intended to reach recipients when they are more likely to notice them. Availability is limited to eligible users in select countries, so the option may not appear in every account or region.

Use a scheduled broadcast only for legitimate business communication to people who have opted in. A broadcast is not permission to send unsolicited promotions to any list of phone numbers.

A greeting message can automatically welcome a customer when they begin a conversation with the business. It is triggered by the conversation or business settings; it is not a message you compose now and schedule for delivery to a personal contact at a chosen future time.
Away messages
An away message can respond when customers contact the business outside configured business hours. It is useful for setting expectations—such as explaining when the business will respond—but it is triggered by an incoming customer message and is not a general-purpose delayed sender.
Business Platform and CRM automation
For larger or more structured operations, a WhatsApp Business Platform provider, CRM, or Meta business tool may support approved customer workflows. These systems still operate under business messaging rules. Businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform can initiate conversations only with pre-approved templates, and they must respect opt-ins, customer control, feedback, blocking, and reporting behavior.
In other words, business automation is not a workaround for sending unrestricted bulk marketing messages. Confirm current country eligibility, provider availability, pricing, templates, and policy requirements before choosing a platform.

Troubleshooting scheduled WhatsApp messages
The automation did not run
- Confirm the date, time, repeat setting, and time zone.
- Make sure the automation is enabled.
- Keep the phone powered on and connected to the internet.
- Open WhatsApp manually and confirm that it is logged in.
- On Android, review battery optimization and background restrictions for the scheduler.
- On iPhone, check whether the action supports unattended execution or requires confirmation.
The app opened, but the message was not sent
This usually means the workflow is preparing an action rather than performing true delayed sending. Check whether the phone was locked, whether an accessibility prompt appeared, and whether a final Send confirmation was required. Change the automation only after testing it with a message to yourself.
The wrong person or group was selected
Delete the scheduled item, verify the contact or group name, and create a new test. Avoid relying on a workflow that identifies recipients by screen position or a fragile sequence of taps.

The feature disappeared after an update
Review the scheduler’s current instructions and permissions, then check WhatsApp and Android or iOS for changes. Interface-based automation can break after an update. If the app requests new, broader permissions, reassess whether the convenience is worth the privacy risk.
Can Google Messages schedule WhatsApp messages?
No. Google Messages has an official scheduled-send feature on Android 7.0 and later: you compose a message and long-press Send to choose a time. That feature applies to Google Messages, SMS, or supported chat messaging—not automatically to WhatsApp. Google’s documented behavior also says a disconnected phone sends the message when it reconnects, which is different from WhatsApp scheduling.

Which method should you use?
- iPhone personal chat: Try Apple Shortcuts, but test whether your specific WhatsApp action can run without confirmation.
- Android personal chat: Use a third-party tool only after reviewing its permissions, privacy information, recent reviews, and battery requirements. Do not assume it is reliable or WhatsApp-approved.
- Business customer communication: Use eligible WhatsApp Business broadcasts, greeting messages, away messages, or a compliant Business Platform workflow.
- Mission-critical delivery: Do not depend on an untested device automation. Use a communication channel with a documented native scheduling queue, or set a reminder and send manually.
For any method, schedule a test first. The test should verify the recipient, message text, delivery time, behavior with the screen locked, and what happens when the phone briefly loses connectivity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WhatsApp have a native schedule-message feature?
Not as a universally available feature for ordinary personal chats based on the reviewed information as of August 11, 2026. WhatsApp’s native scheduled-message capability had been reported as under development in beta coverage, so availability should be checked in the current stable app.
Can I schedule a WhatsApp message without keeping my phone on?
Usually not with device automation. Shortcuts and Android scheduler apps generally depend on the phone being powered on, and Android tools may also require connectivity, background access, or an unlocked screen. This is different from a true server-side message queue.
Are WhatsApp Business away messages scheduled messages?
No. Away messages are automatic responses to customers who contact the business outside configured hours. Greeting messages and business broadcasts also serve specific business workflows rather than general personal-chat scheduling.
Is it safe to give an Android scheduler accessibility permission?
Accessibility access can allow an app to observe or control visible screen content, so it should be granted only to an app you have carefully vetted. Review the developer, privacy disclosures, permissions, update history, and reviews, and revoke access when you stop using the tool.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal, dependable native scheduler for ordinary WhatsApp chats to recommend to everyone. On iPhone, Apple Shortcuts is the least complicated workaround, but it may need confirmation. On Android, third-party automation can work only when its permissions and device conditions cooperate, so test it and treat broad access as a serious privacy decision. Businesses should use WhatsApp Business features only for compliant, opted-in customer communication.
