Editor’s note: This is a dated 2025 buying guide. The underlying WIRED guide has since changed to an 8-product 2026 guide, so do not treat this list as a current ranking without checking the latest specifications and prices. The recommendations below remain useful as a comparison of the 2025 models and their documented limitations.

The most important distinction is simple: a travel adapter changes the shape of the plug; it usually does not convert electricity from 220–240 volts to 110–120 volts. Before buying, check your destination’s socket type, your device’s input rating, whether you need grounding, and how much USB-C power your equipment actually requires.

Quick comparison

Adapter Best for Important limitation
Ceptics GaN 100W Universal High-output, multi-device charging Not grounded; USB ports have much lower individual limits than the headline 100W
Tessan GaN Universal Laptop and phone charging Output is redistributed when several ports are used
Epicka Pulse Compact universal charging Not a voltage converter; may loosen in some outlets
Ceptics 6-in-1 Worldwide Grounded regional connections Bulkier because it uses separate attachments
Ceptics World Travel Plug Set Travelers carrying their own charger No USB charging
Foval Voltage Converter Devices that genuinely need conversion Not for appliances over 230W, including many hair dryers
Apple World Travel Adapter Kit Apple charger owners Plug heads only; charger is not included
Anker European Travel Plug Adapter Trips in Europe with light USB charging USB output is limited to 15W total
Masterplug Visitor to UK, 3-pack Visitors using UK outlets UK-specific and has no USB ports
Baseus 70W Universal Retractable-cable convenience Advertised cable output is not simultaneous output for every port
Epicka Universal Basic multi-device charging Does not support charging in India or South Africa
Epicka Hybrid European Multiple low-power USB connections USB charging is capped at 20W total
EZQuest WorldTravel GaN Many USB-C connections Boxy, and its sliders do not lock as securely as some rivals

These are not interchangeable choices. A compact plug head may be ideal for a phone charger in France, while a grounded adapter with regional attachments is safer for equipment that needs an earth connection. A voltage converter is a different category altogether.

Anker Nano Travel Adapter (1-Pack), 2 USB-C Universal Charger, 20W
  • Universal Plug Compatibility: Type A (US / Canada / Japan / China), Type C (EU), Type G (UK / Singapore), and Type I (Australia).
  • Power 5 Devices at Once: Includes 1 AC outlet, 2 USB-A ports, and 2 USB-C ports. The USB ports support up to 20W total output or 15W max when shared. A single USB-C port delivers up to 20W and charges iPhone 16 to 50% in 28 minutes. The maximum current is 6A.
  • Exceptionally Compact: Measuring just 3.39 × 1.97 × 0.98 in (86 × 50 × 25 mm), it has a credit card-sized footprint and is 43% smaller than similar models. See image 4 for the size comparison. Foldable and retractable pins make it even easier to carry.
  • 2-Pin to 2-Pin Connection: The safe 2-pin design helps reduce the risk of electric shock for worry-free travel. The AC outlet does not support 3-prong grounded plugs, including EU Schuko, UK 3-pin, or grounded laptop chargers.
  • What You Get: 1× Anker Nano Travel Adapter (5-in-1, 20W), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The headline “100W” needs careful reading. The individual USB-C ports listed for this model are limited to 15W each, while the USB-A ports are limited to 12W each. Do not assume that every connected port can deliver 100W, or that the built-in cable and all other ports can operate at their maximum simultaneously.

The larger concern is grounding. WIRED identifies this adapter as not grounded. Do not connect equipment with a third metal grounding pin, particularly metal-cased or high-power equipment.

2. Tessan GaN Universal Travel Adapter

The Tessan covers more than 200 countries and supports Type A, C, G, and I configurations. It has two USB-C and two USB-A ports, with the USB-C ports rated up to 65W. That makes it a more plausible choice than a low-output cube for charging a compatible laptop alongside smaller devices.

Its 60W and 5W USB-A ratings, along with the USB-C allocation rules, matter when several devices are connected. “Up to 65W” describes a port’s maximum under the relevant conditions, not guaranteed output from every port at once. Like other large universal adapters, it can also sag in a loose or awkwardly positioned wall outlet.

3. Epicka Pulse Travel Adapter

The Epicka Pulse is the compact option among the universal charger-style adapters. Its sliding design covers Type A, C, G, and I sockets and supports more than 200 countries. It provides two USB-C and two USB-A ports. Either USB-C port can provide up to 45W, while the USB-A ports are rated up to 18W.

That combination suits a phone, tablet, or some USB-C laptops better than a basic plug-only adapter. The universal-prong arrangement can become loose in certain outlets, however. It is also a plug adapter and charger—not a voltage converter—so the connected device still needs to accept the local mains voltage.

4. Ceptics 6-in-1 Worldwide Travel Adapter

This model takes a more modular approach. It uses separate plug attachments rather than relying entirely on sliding universal prongs, includes two grounded US AC outlets, and adds a retractable USB-C cable, two USB-A ports, and two USB-C ports.

The USB-C ports support up to 20W each. The USB-A ports and built-in cable share a 15W maximum, so the extra connections are useful for convenience but should not be confused with high-speed, high-wattage charging. It is larger than a typical universal cube, but the separate regional attachments can offer a more secure fit and preserve grounding where appropriate.

5. Ceptics World Travel Adapter Plug Set

Choose this when you already own a good charger and only need the correct physical plug. The 12-piece set covers Type A, B, C, D, E/F, G, H, I, J, L, M, and N adapters. WIRED describes the individual adapters in that set as grounded.

There is also a five-piece set covering B, C, E/F, G, and I. It saves space and money, but the cheaper set is described as flimsy, lacking grounding, and potentially unsuitable for recessed European sockets. Neither set includes USB ports, so you must pack a separate wall charger.

6. Foval Travel Voltage Converter

The Foval is for the problem a normal travel adapter cannot solve: a single-voltage appliance being used on a different mains voltage. It is rated for more than 160 countries and includes two standard outlets and four USB ports.

Its power limit is the deciding factor. Condé Nast Traveler’s guidance says not to use it with hair dryers or household appliances over 230W. That excludes many high-wattage heating appliances. Check the appliance’s wattage before connecting it; “voltage converter” does not mean “safe for every appliance.”

7. Apple World Travel Adapter Kit

Apple’s kit is a simple solution for people who already use compatible Apple power equipment. Apple says the plug heads work with Apple USB, USB-C, or MagSafe power adapters that have a removable AC wall adapter, often called a “duckhead.”

This is not a standalone multi-port charger and it does not convert voltage. You supply the compatible Apple charger separately, then attach the regional plug head needed at your destination. It is a particularly tidy option if your devices are already centered on Apple’s charging ecosystem.

8. Anker European Travel Plug Adapter

This regional adapter provides one grounded US outlet, one USB-A port, and two USB-C ports when used with most European outlets. It is a better fit for a Europe-focused trip than a bulky worldwide cube when you want a compact connection for a charger and a few low-power devices.

The USB ports are limited to 15W total. That is adequate for overnight phone or accessory charging, but not a sensible choice for high-speed laptop charging. A UK version is sold separately, so do not assume the European model fits UK sockets.

TESSAN European Travel Plug Adapter 2 Pack, Type C Plug
  • Adapter for Europe Plug: Europe plug adapter works in European countries such as Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Greece, Iceland, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Turkey, Poland, etc; Some countries or regions use multiple socket types (Note: Type C adapters are not supported in the UK, Ireland, Scotland)
  • NOTE: This Europe adapter is a PLUG ADAPTER ONLY, NOT a VOLTAGE CONVERTER. If you want to use a hair dryers, straighteners, or curing irons, please check if they support wide voltage (110V-240V). If they support 110V only or 240V only, you cannot use this adapter.
  • Power Range: This travel adapter supports voltages from 100V to 250V with a rated current of 10A. Maximum total power is 2500W at 250V local voltage and 1000W at 100V local voltage. Please check local voltage before use to avoid device malfunction.
  • USB C PD 20W: TESSAN European travel plug adapter USB C is of 20W Max output, charging your phone, earphones and other devices; EU adapters for travel also has 2 USB A port to meet the charging needs of various devices
  • Compact and Portable: Compact size 2.24 x 3.14 x 2.65 in and lightweight 3.48 ounces; International plug adapter fits easily into your bag; EU adapter with 4 sided design won't block when plug in large adapter; No surge protection, cruise ship essentials

9. Masterplug Visitor to UK Travel Adapter, 3-pack

This is a straightforward UK plug adapter for visitors carrying European, American, Australian, or Asian plugs. It uses a single-outlet design and a 13-amp fuse. The three-pack is practical when several family members need the same basic adapter.

There are no integrated USB ports, and it is not a universal voltage converter. It is specifically for adapting a foreign plug to a UK outlet. The UK, Ireland, Singapore, and Hong Kong use Type G sockets, so a Type C European adapter is not a substitute.

10. Baseus 70W Universal Travel Adapter with Retractable Cable

The Baseus covers more than 200 countries and provides a retractable USB-C cable, one additional USB-C port, and two USB-A ports. Its advertised output reaches 70W, making it appealing to travelers who want a cable built into the adapter rather than another loose item in the bag.

The trade-off is the same one seen across multi-port chargers: the cable’s maximum does not mean that every other port can deliver its maximum at the same time. Treat the 70W figure as a maximum or allocation-dependent rating, and check the port-sharing behavior before relying on it for a laptop.

11. Epicka Universal Travel Adapter

This older-style Epicka universal adapter uses sliding plugs to cover 150 countries. It has four USB-A ports and one USB-C port, plus an 8-amp fuse and spare. RoHS, CE, and FCC certifications are listed for the model.

It has a significant destination limitation: Condé Nast Traveler specifically says it does not support charging in India or South Africa. It also does not convert voltage. Universal designs may loosen under the weight of several cables, so this is better suited to moderate charging than to a heavy collection of plugs and high-power equipment.

12. Epicka Hybrid European Travel Plug Adapter

The Hybrid European model turns one outlet into four and adds two USB-A and two USB-C ports. Its USB charging supports QC 3.0 or PD 3.0, which is useful for compatible devices that support those charging standards.

Do not select it solely because it has four USB ports. Combined USB output is limited to 20W total. That is a shared pool, not 20W per port, and is more appropriate for phones and accessories than for simultaneously charging several demanding devices.

13. EZQuest WorldTravel GaN 5-Port Wall Charger

The EZQuest has four USB-C ports and one USB-A port, with sliding prongs covering more than 150 countries. It includes a 10-amp fuse and spare, and is listed as RoHS-, CE-, and FCC-certified. The five-port arrangement is useful for a traveler whose devices are predominantly USB-C.

WIRED found the unit boxy and noted that its sliders do not lock as securely as some competing designs. That matters when the adapter is supporting several cables in a wall outlet. A separate 65W version is available, so check the exact model and output rating rather than assuming every WorldTravel version has the same charging capability.

How to choose the right travel adapter

1. Identify the socket at your destination

Do not stop at “Europe” or “Asia.” Europe commonly uses Type C, E, and F variants, and recessed sockets are not always equally accommodating. The UK, Ireland, Singapore, and Hong Kong use Type G. Australia, New Zealand, and parts of China use Type I configurations. A product that accepts Type C alone will not fit a UK outlet.

2. Read the input label on every important device

Look for wording such as 100–240V, 50/60Hz. That indicates dual-voltage operation and is common on modern phone, tablet, laptop, camera, and USB power-brick chargers. A device marked only for 120V is not automatically safe on a 220–240V supply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hair dryers, curling irons, irons, kettles, and some shavers are the recurring exceptions. If an appliance is single-voltage, you need a suitably rated converter—or should leave it at home. A plug adapter alone can damage it or create a safety hazard.

3. Check grounding

A two-pin adapter can physically power a device while failing to preserve its earth connection. If the equipment has a three-pin grounded plug, choose an adapter that explicitly supports grounding. The Ceptics GaN 100W Universal, for example, is specifically identified as not grounded.

4. Ignore the biggest wattage until you read the port table

For a laptop, check the USB-C port’s individual rating and the multi-port sharing rules. A “70W” or “100W” label may refer to a maximum or combined capability. Other ports can be limited to 15W, 20W, or less, and connecting more devices can redistribute the available power.

5. Consider outlet stability

Universal cubes are convenient, but their weight can pull them downward in loose, recessed, or poorly positioned outlets. For a one-country trip, a small regional adapter may sit more securely. If you choose a large universal model, avoid hanging several heavy chargers and cables from it when the wall socket feels loose.

Adapter, charger, or voltage converter?

What you need Correct product What it does not do
Plug shape does not fit the wall Plug adapter Does not change voltage
Several USB devices from one outlet Travel adapter with USB ports or a USB charger plus plug adapter More ports do not guarantee more total power
Single-voltage appliance on incompatible mains Voltage converter rated for that appliance’s wattage Is not automatically safe for high-wattage appliances
Grounded equipment abroad Grounded regional adapter or grounded universal model A two-pin adapter does not preserve the earth connection

Airport and packing notes

Travel adapters are not power banks and are not subject to the lithium-battery rules that apply to power banks. Even so, TSA says an item that is generally permitted can receive additional screening or be refused if it triggers an alarm, appears tampered with, or presents a security concern. Pack the adapter so it can be removed easily, and check TSA’s “What Can I Bring?” tool for the specific item before departure.

Do not plug one travel adapter into another. Besides being unstable, adapter stacking is specifically addressed in the IEC’s 2026 draft revision for travel adapters, alongside requirements for USB power supplies, markings, electromagnetic compatibility, and warnings. Certification marks such as CE, RoHS, or FCC do not prove that a product converts voltage or preserves grounding.

FAQ

Does a travel adapter convert 220V to 110V?

Usually, no. A plug adapter only changes the physical shape of the connection. Check the charger or device label for “100–240V, 50/60Hz.” If it is single-voltage, use a properly rated voltage converter or do not take the appliance.

Can I use a universal adapter with a hair dryer?

Only if the appliance’s voltage, wattage, and grounding requirements are compatible with the adapter or converter. Many hair dryers exceed the 230W limit cited for the Foval converter, and a normal plug adapter does not perform voltage conversion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a 100W travel adapter capable of charging every port at 100W?

No. The headline figure usually describes a maximum or combined output. Individual ports have their own limits, and connecting multiple devices can redistribute power. Read the port-level specifications and sharing rules.

Do I need a UK adapter if I already have a European adapter?

Yes. The UK, Ireland, Singapore, and Hong Kong use Type G outlets. A Type C European adapter is not designed for those sockets. Choose a Type G-compatible adapter or a universal model that explicitly includes the UK configuration.

The Bottom Line

For a single universal unit with substantial USB-C capability, the Tessan GaN Universal Travel Adapter is the more compelling 2025 choice, while the Ceptics GaN 100W Universal offers broad coverage and useful built-in connections but must not be used with grounded equipment. Choose the Ceptics World Travel Adapter Plug Set if you already have a charger, the Anker European adapter for compact low-power charging in Europe, and the Foval only when you have confirmed that a voltage converter is necessary and that your appliance is below its wattage limit.

Whatever you buy, verify four things before packing: destination socket type, device input voltage, grounding, and actual per-port/shared USB output.
