For most Windows 11 users, MediaHuman Audio Converter, fre:ac, and Switch Audio Converter Free are the best starting points. MediaHuman is the simplest choice for batch music conversion, fre:ac is the strongest open-source option and the best pick for CD ripping, and Switch is beginner-friendly with broad format support and a permanent free edition.
The right choice depends on what you are converting. VLC is convenient for occasional video-to-audio extraction, Audacity is better when editing is part of the job, FFmpeg is the most flexible option for command-line users, and Shutter Encoder or XMedia Recode provide more advanced controls. Format Factory is included as a browser-based alternative, but it uploads files for cloud processing and should not be used for private recordings.
This is a capability-and-workflow guide, not a laboratory performance ranking. The recommendations are based on documented Windows support, features, free-tier conditions, format coverage, and ease of use. No independent speed, audio-quality, malware, or reliability testing was performed.

| XMedia Recode | Advanced Windows graphical controls | Codec, channel, sample-rate, bitrate, conversion, and stream-copy controls | Its broad video-and-audio interface can feel complex for basic music jobs |
| Shutter Encoder | Professional-style transcoding workflows | FFmpeg-based sound conversion, queues, separate audio tracks, sample-rate changes, mixing, and audio mapping | More complex than ordinary music converters |
| foobar2000 | Conversion as part of a music library | Strong player and library workflow with a Free Encoder Pack for FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Opus, Musepack, WavPack, MP3/LAME, and Apple Lossless | Encoder setup and dependencies require more attention |
| Any Audio Converter | Traditional GUI conversion and video extraction | Supports listed formats including MP3, WMA, AAC, M4A, OGG, and FLAC, plus audio extraction from video | Online-service downloading features require separate rights and terms checks |
| Any Video Converter Free | Video-first workflows | Local video and audio conversion, audio extraction, and conversion without a watermark in the documented free Windows edition | Less audio-specialized than fre:ac, Switch, or MediaHuman |
| Format Factory Online | Simple jobs without installing software | No-sign-up browser conversion, batch processing, MP3 extraction, and format-specific tools | Files are uploaded to cloud workers, so privacy is the key trade-off |
Fast recommendation: choose MediaHuman for the least complicated batch workflow, fre:ac for open-source conversion or CD ripping, Audacity if you need to edit first, and FFmpeg if repeatable commands and precise control matter more than a graphical interface.

What to check before converting an audio file
Audio conversion is not automatically an improvement. The output format and settings determine whether the conversion preserves the source or discards information.
- Use a lossless format for an archive. FLAC, WAV, and ALAC are suitable when you want to preserve the source without lossy compression. FLAC usually offers a more practical music-archive workflow than uncompressed WAV because it is designed for lossless audio storage and supports metadata.
- Use a lossy format for compatibility or smaller files. MP3, AAC, and Opus reduce file size by discarding some audio information. They can be useful for phones, car stereos, sharing, or streaming-oriented workflows.
- Do not expect lossless output to restore lost quality. Converting an MP3 to FLAC makes a larger FLAC file, but it does not recover information already removed from the MP3.
- Avoid repeated lossy conversions. If possible, convert from the original WAV, FLAC, or other lossless source directly to the final delivery format.
- Check metadata settings. Album, artist, track number, artwork, and filenames may be preserved, rewritten, or dropped depending on the program and output format. Test a representative file before processing a large collection.
- Check the source rights. These programs are for files you own or are authorized to convert. A converter is not permission to bypass DRM or download copyrighted material from an online service.
The 12 best free audio converter programs
1. fre:ac — best open-source converter and CD ripper
fre:ac is the strongest all-around recommendation when you want a genuinely free and open-source Windows audio tool rather than a limited trial. The project documents support for formats including MP3, MP4/AAC, Opus, and FLAC, along with CD ripping, tag editing, playlists, cue sheets, chapters, multi-format output, and lossless verification.
It is particularly useful for building a digital music library from audio CDs. It can also fit a more careful archival workflow because the documented feature set goes beyond simply selecting an input and output extension. Users who need to rip CDs on a computer without a built-in optical drive may also need an optional external USB CD drive; the drive is not part of fre:ac and is unnecessary for files that are already digital.
Official Windows downloads include an installer and portable-style ZIP packages. The project also documents installation through a Windows package manager. The installer format and available builds can change, so check the official project download page and confirm that the package matches your Windows 11 system.
Choose fre:ac if: you want open-source software, CD ripping, tagging, verification, or a flexible library-conversion workflow.
2. MediaHuman Audio Converter — best for straightforward batch conversion
MediaHuman Audio Converter is the easiest recommendation for ordinary music-file conversion when you want a graphical interface without starting with command-line options. Its documented Windows features include batch conversion, simultaneous processing, lossless-format conversion, CUE splitting, preservation of folder structure, tag-based filenames, and extraction of audio tracks from video.
That combination makes it useful for collections rather than just one file. Folder preservation and tag-based naming can reduce cleanup work after a large conversion, while CUE support is helpful when a disc image and cue sheet represent a complete album. It is also a practical option when the input is a video file but the desired result is an audio file.
The official download page lists Windows 64-bit and 32-bit packages. The research snapshot lists version 2.3.7 with an update date of May 24, 2026; version numbers and download packages should be checked on the current official page before installation.
Choose MediaHuman if: you want simple batch conversion, organized output folders, and minimal setup.
3. Switch Audio Converter Free — best beginner-oriented broad-format option
Switch Audio Converter Free is a good fit for users who want a conventional desktop converter with broad documented format support. NCH lists more than 75 common audio formats, batch conversion, normalization, tag support, playlist import, and extraction of audio from video. Its compatibility listing explicitly includes Windows 7 through Windows 11.
The free version does not expire and remains freeware, but Switch also has a paid Plus edition with additional professional features. That distinction matters: “free” here describes a continuing free edition, not that every feature in the product family is available without payment.
The Windows release history lists version 14.03 as uploaded on February 22, 2026. Use the vendor’s current download and licensing information because edition boundaries and release numbers may change.
Choose Switch if: you are new to audio conversion, need a long format list, or want features such as normalization and playlist import in a standard Windows interface.
4. VLC Media Player — best if it is already installed
VLC is primarily a media player, but its official documentation includes a Windows Convert/Save workflow and audio-output profiles. It can convert media files that VLC can open and can save or extract audio from local media.
Rank #2
- USB audio grabber with 3.5mm and R/L audio connector input, via usb connected to pc, recording audio into computer and convert to MP3/WAV
- Audio Capture Card, Plug and play, no extra power supply. Easy to record from Microphone/Line In/Auxiliary input
- Coming with professional audio capture/converting software ( Audacity) and online updating
- Easily recording live audio or transfer analog to be digital formats such as MP3, WAV. User can save & listen to music on MP3 player, computer, portable CD player, or car stereo or home stereo system
- Supporting OS: Windows 10 / 8.1 / 8 / 7 / Vista / XP, Mac OS 10.11 and more.
For a one-off job, VLC can be convenient because many Windows users already have it installed. A typical Windows workflow is:
- Open VLC and select Media > Convert / Save.
- Use Add to select the local media file.
- Select Convert / Save.
- Choose an audio output profile, such as an audio format profile available in your VLC installation.
- Set the destination file and start the conversion.
The exact profile names and available codecs can vary with the VLC build. VLC is less specialized than MediaHuman, fre:ac, or Switch for large music batches, metadata-heavy libraries, and detailed audio settings.
Choose VLC if: you need occasional conversion or audio extraction and do not want to install a separate converter.
5. Audacity — best when editing and conversion are combined
Audacity is the right choice when conversion is only one part of the job. It is an audio editor, so it can trim silence, remove or reduce unwanted noise, normalize or adjust levels, mix tracks, and then export the result. Its documented export formats include MP3, WAV, and OGG.
Optional FFmpeg integration expands Audacity’s import and export support to formats including AC3, M4A, MP4, and WMA. It can also import audio from many non-DRM video files. If Audacity cannot open a particular source, installing and configuring the optional FFmpeg library may provide the additional format support required.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Audacity is less efficient than a dedicated converter when the goal is to transcode hundreds of untouched files. Editing and re-exporting can also change the audio, so keep the original source files and export to a new destination.
For cassette, vinyl, or another analog source, Audacity is often part of a larger workflow: capture the signal into Windows, edit or clean it, and export the finished recording. A USB audio capture adapter is optional hardware for that analog-input stage; it is not needed to convert an existing MP3, FLAC, WAV, or video file.
Choose Audacity if: you need to edit, clean up, trim, mix, or inspect audio before exporting it.
6. FFmpeg — best for power users and automation
FFmpeg is the most technically capable option in this list. Its official documentation describes it as a universal media converter that reads many input types and transcodes to a large range of output formats. It provides command-line control over codecs, containers, filters, resampling, and other audio and video parameters.
For example, a basic FLAC-to-MP3 conversion can be written as:
ffmpeg -i "input.flac" -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 "output.mp3"
A WAV-to-FLAC conversion can be written as:
ffmpeg -i "input.wav" -c:a flac "output.flac"
To extract audio from a video and encode it as MP3:
ffmpeg -i "input.mp4" -vn -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 2 "output.mp3"
These are examples, not universal best settings. The input codec, source quality, desired compatibility, metadata, channel layout, and target file size may require different options. The key advantage is repeatability: once a command is correct, it can be scripted for many files and reused consistently.
FFmpeg is open-source software in the broader technical sense, but it is not beginner-oriented. Windows users who prefer a graphical interface can use a front end such as Shutter Encoder or XMedia Recode while retaining access to FFmpeg-based capabilities.

7. XMedia Recode — best advanced Windows GUI
XMedia Recode is a free all-in-one Windows converter for video and audio. Its documented Windows support includes Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11. Listed audio formats include AAC, AC3, FLAC, Opus, MP3, and WMA, alongside many video and container formats.
Its audio tab provides controls for conversion or stream copying, codec selection, channels, sample rate, and bitrate. Stream copying can be useful when the existing audio stream is already suitable and you want to avoid re-encoding, while codec and sampling controls are available when a genuine transcode is required.
The interface is more involved than a basic drag-and-drop converter, but that is also its strength. The research snapshot lists version 3.6.2.2 in a January 25, 2026 update. Verify the current Windows build and supported architecture on the official site before downloading.

8. Shutter Encoder — best professional-style transcoding workflow
Shutter Encoder uses FFmpeg and is aimed at a more structured media-production workflow. Its documentation covers sound conversions to and from WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, MP3, AAC, AC3, OPUS, Vorbis, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby TrueHD. It also documents separate audio tracks, sample-rate changes, audio mixing, audio mapping, and batch queues.
This makes Shutter Encoder particularly useful when audio is part of a video or post-production workflow. You can queue multiple operations, work with separate tracks, and make routing or sample-rate decisions that simpler music converters may hide.
Windows portable downloads are documented, which can be useful when you want to run the tool without a conventional installation. The homepage lists version 20.2 in the research snapshot. Because the interface exposes more media concepts, beginners may find MediaHuman or Switch easier for ordinary music files.

9. foobar2000 — best for a managed music-library workflow
foobar2000 is primarily a Windows music player and library manager, but its Converter component makes it a strong choice for people who want conversion integrated with collection organization. The official Windows page lists foobar2000 version 2.25.10 as the latest stable version in the research snapshot and states Windows 7 or newer requirements, which encompasses Windows 11.
Its Free Encoder Pack supplies encoders for FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Opus, Musepack, WavPack, MP3/LAME, and Apple Lossless. The pack has stated dependencies and licensing limitations for some AAC encoders, so install and review the encoder-pack documentation rather than assuming every format is bundled in exactly the same way.
foobar2000 is not the fastest path for a single conversion if you have never configured it. It becomes more attractive when you already manage a large collection, want playback and conversion in one application, or want control over encoder presets and naming rules.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose foobar2000 if: your audio files are part of a maintained library and you want conversion, playback, tagging, and organization together.
10. Any Audio Converter — best traditional GUI with video-to-audio extraction
Any Audio Converter is a conventional free conversion application with support listed for formats such as MP3, WMA, WMV, AAC, M4A, OGG, and FLAC. The vendor also documents extracting audio from video, which makes it useful when the input is a local video and the desired output is a music or spoken-audio file.

The product pages promote online-service downloading features as well. Those features should not be treated as blanket permission to copy online material. Use them only when you have the necessary rights and the workflow complies with the relevant service’s terms.
Choose this program when you want an approachable converter with video extraction but do not need the open-source features of fre:ac or the editing capabilities of Audacity.
Choose Any Audio Converter if: you want a familiar desktop conversion interface and frequently extract audio from local video files.
11. Any Video Converter Free — best when the input is mainly video
Any Video Converter Free is better viewed as a video-first utility that also handles audio. Its official Windows download information describes common video and audio conversion tasks, local-file processing, audio extraction, and conversion without a watermark in the free edition.
It is a sensible choice for extracting a soundtrack from a local video when you already use a video-conversion workflow. For a music collection, however, fre:ac, MediaHuman, or Switch are more natural starting points because they are more directly focused on audio conversion and library tasks.
Choose Any Video Converter Free if: most of your inputs are video files and audio extraction is an occasional requirement.
12. Format Factory Online — best browser-based alternative for simple jobs
Format Factory’s current offering includes an online, no-sign-up converter rather than only a traditional Windows desktop workflow. The site lists audio conversion, MP3 extraction from video, batch processing, and format-specific tools such as WAV-to-MP3, FLAC-to-MP3, and MP3-to-WAV.
The convenience comes with an important privacy trade-off: files are uploaded to cloud workers for processing. Do not use a browser converter for confidential interviews, unreleased music, private family recordings, business material, or any file whose upload you cannot authorize. For sensitive files, choose an installed Windows application instead.
Online availability, file-size limits, supported formats, and processing policies can change more frequently than those of installed software. Review the current site’s terms and privacy information before uploading anything.
Choose Format Factory Online if: you need a quick, non-sensitive conversion and do not want to install an application.

How to choose the right converter
Choose the easiest tool for ordinary music files
Start with MediaHuman Audio Converter, Switch Audio Converter Free, or fre:ac. All three are more suitable than a media player for repeated music conversion. MediaHuman emphasizes a straightforward batch workflow, Switch offers a broad documented format list and beginner-friendly features, and fre:ac adds open-source licensing, CD ripping, and verification-oriented features.
Choose fre:ac for CD ripping
fre:ac is the first choice when the source is an audio CD and you want ripping, tags, playlists, cue sheets, or lossless verification in the same tool. Switch is another documented option for CD-related conversion, but fre:ac is the more focused recommendation for this use case.
Choose Audacity for editing
Use Audacity when the audio needs trimming, cleanup, level adjustment, mixing, or another edit before export. A converter preserves or changes formats; an editor changes the content or structure of the audio. Keeping those jobs separate can be useful, but Audacity combines them when you need both.

Choose VLC for an occasional extraction
VLC is convenient when it is already installed and you only need to extract or convert audio from a local file occasionally. It is not the best choice for managing a large batch, carefully preserving a music-library folder structure, or configuring many encoder presets.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose FFmpeg, Shutter Encoder, or XMedia Recode for control
FFmpeg offers the deepest command-line control and automation. Shutter Encoder presents many FFmpeg capabilities in a professional-style interface with queues, mapping, and mixing. XMedia Recode is a good advanced Windows GUI when you want codec, channel, sample-rate, bitrate, and stream-copy choices.
Choose foobar2000 for a library
foobar2000 makes the most sense when conversion is part of a maintained music collection. Its player, library, converter, and encoder-pack workflow can be more valuable than a minimal converter, especially when naming and organization matter.
Practical Windows 11 conversion workflows
Convert FLAC to MP3 for a phone or car
- Keep the FLAC files as your archival originals.
- Open them in MediaHuman, fre:ac, Switch, foobar2000, or another converter that supports both formats.
- Choose MP3 as the output and select a quality or bitrate preset appropriate for the device.
- Write the output to a separate folder rather than overwriting the FLAC files.
- Convert one or two tracks first and check playback, tags, artwork, and filenames.
- Process the rest of the collection only after the test result is correct.
Extract audio from a local video
For an occasional file, VLC is convenient. Switch, MediaHuman, Any Audio Converter, and Any Video Converter Free are better suited when you have several files or need a more repeatable batch workflow. Audacity can import many non-DRM video files when its optional FFmpeg support is configured, which is useful if you also need to edit the extracted audio.
When extracting, decide whether you want to preserve the existing audio stream or re-encode it. Stream copying can avoid another lossy generation when the source stream and destination container are compatible; otherwise, choose an output codec and settings deliberately.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchRip an audio CD to an archive
- Install fre:ac from its official project source and insert the audio CD.
- Choose a lossless output such as FLAC if you want an archival copy.
- Review track names, artist information, album data, and output folder settings.
- Enable or use lossless verification where the workflow provides it.
- Rip a small test or the first disc, then check the files in a player before continuing.
A computer without an optical drive will need an optional external USB CD drive. That hardware is relevant only to physical-disc workflows; it does nothing for converting files already stored on the PC.
Digitize cassette or vinyl before converting
A cassette, turntable, or other analog source cannot be converted by software until it has been recorded into the computer. The workflow is: connect the source to suitable capture hardware, record into Windows, edit or clean the recording in Audacity if needed, export a lossless master, and create smaller MP3, AAC, or Opus copies only afterward.
An optional USB audio capture adapter may provide the computer’s analog-input stage. It is separate from ordinary file conversion, and the correct hardware depends on the source connection, signal level, and whether a turntable requires a phono preamp. Do not buy capture hardware if all of your source files are already digital.
Free does not always mean open source
These terms describe different things:
- Freeware: software available without a purchase under the vendor’s stated conditions. Switch’s free edition is documented as non-expiring, but the Plus edition adds features.
- Open source: software whose source code is available under an open-source license. fre:ac is the clearest open-source recommendation in this list. FFmpeg is also open source, but it is primarily a command-line media toolkit rather than a beginner desktop converter.
- Free tier: a version that may coexist with paid editions or optional features. Read the product’s current edition and licensing information before relying on a feature.
- Browser-based: a service that processes files online. Format Factory Online requires uploading files, so its privacy characteristics differ from installed Windows software.
Audacity may require the optional FFmpeg library for additional import and export formats. foobar2000’s Free Encoder Pack also has dependencies and licensing notes, particularly around some AAC encoders. These are not reasons to reject the programs; they are reasons to check the current documentation during setup.
Windows 11 installation and safety checklist
- Download installers from the developer’s official project or product page instead of an unknown mirror.
- Check whether the download is a 64-bit, 32-bit, installer, or portable package and choose the appropriate build for your PC.
- Read the installer screens. A free converter may have a paid edition, optional components, or settings that are not relevant to your workflow.
- Keep the original audio files until the converted files have been checked.
- Test tags, artwork, channels, sample rate, and playback on the device where the output will be used.
- For large batches, convert a few representative files first, including files with long names, unusual tags, multiple channels, or embedded artwork.
- Do not upload private recordings to an online converter unless you have reviewed and accepted its processing and privacy terms.
- Do not interpret “free” as a guarantee of open-source licensing, unrestricted commercial use, or access to every feature.
Windows support changes as applications release new builds. Switch and XMedia Recode explicitly list Windows 11 support in the researched product information, while foobar2000 lists Windows 7 or newer. MediaHuman provides current Windows packages, and the other projects publish Windows builds or Windows-oriented documentation. Always confirm the current installer requirements before deployment, especially on ARM-based Windows 11 PCs or managed work computers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which free audio converter is best for Windows 11 beginners?
MediaHuman Audio Converter is the simplest starting point for batch music conversion. Switch Audio Converter Free is also beginner-friendly and lists support for more than 75 common audio formats. Use VLC instead if you only need to convert or extract one occasional local media file.
What is the best free audio converter for ripping CDs?
fre:ac is the strongest recommendation because it combines CD ripping with tagging, playlists, cue sheets, multiple output formats, and documented lossless verification. A computer without an optical drive will also need an external USB CD drive.
Can converting an MP3 to FLAC improve its quality?
No. FLAC is lossless, but it cannot restore information that was already discarded when the MP3 was encoded. Keep the original FLAC, WAV, or other lossless source and convert directly to the final delivery format.
Is VLC a full replacement for an audio converter?
VLC can convert media it opens through Media > Convert / Save and is useful for occasional jobs. It is less specialized than a dedicated converter for large batches, detailed encoder presets, metadata-heavy libraries, and CD ripping.
Should I use an online audio converter for private recordings?
No, not unless you have reviewed and accepted the service’s upload and processing terms. Format Factory Online processes files through cloud workers, so use installed Windows software for confidential, personal, unreleased, or business recordings.
The Bottom Line
For most Windows 11 users, start with MediaHuman Audio Converter, fre:ac, or Switch Audio Converter Free. Choose MediaHuman for simple batch jobs, fre:ac for open-source conversion and CD ripping, Switch for a broad beginner-friendly format list, Audacity for editing, and FFmpeg, Shutter Encoder, or XMedia Recode for advanced control. Keep lossless originals, test a few files before a large batch, and treat online conversion as unsuitable for sensitive recordings.
