A genuinely free VPS trial should give you a usable virtual machine, enough time to test it, and clear rules about what happens when the credit or trial ends. The offers below meet that standard as of August 9, 2026—but they are not interchangeable.
Oracle and Google have continuing free VM capacity. AWS, Azure, Kamatera, UpCloud, Akamai Connected Cloud, IONOS, and VPSserver.com primarily provide temporary credits. Cloudways is a short managed-hosting trial rather than a raw-root VPS, while Vultr’s current offer is limited to a specific OpenClaw promotion.
Most providers require a card or other payment verification. Before launching a server, check the region, instance type, storage, bandwidth, expiration date, and whether attached resources continue billing after the VM is stopped.

1. Oracle Cloud: the strongest long-term free option
Oracle Cloud is the closest match to a genuinely free VPS because its Always Free compute does not expire. New accounts also receive $300 in credit for up to 30 days, which is useful for temporarily testing larger machines, databases, or networking services.

Always Free compute includes either:
- Up to two AMD
VM.Standard.E2.1.Microinstances; or - Up to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of RAM in total on Ampere A1 Arm instances.
Oracle also includes up to 200 GB of Always Free block-volume storage, subject to the provider’s allocation rules. Always Free compute must be created in your tenancy’s home region. The current 2026 documentation lists 1,500 OCPU-hours and 9,000 GB-hours per month for Ampere A1 capacity, not the larger figures repeated by many older guides.
To deploy one, open Navigation menu → Compute → Instances → Create instance, then choose an image and shape marked Always Free Eligible.
The main failure mode is Out of host capacity. This means Oracle has no available capacity in the selected availability domain, not that your account is necessarily broken. Try another availability domain or wait and retry. You generally cannot solve this by switching to another region because Always Free compute is tied to the home region.

Oracle may reclaim an idle Always Free instance after seven days when CPU, network, and—on A1 instances—memory usage remain below its stated thresholds. Keep a small monitoring or maintenance workload if the server matters.
2. Google Cloud Compute Engine: best general-purpose free tier
Google Cloud provides $300 of trial credit for 90 days. During the trial, Google says you are not billed. The credit ends when it is exhausted or the 90-day period expires.
Afterward, the continuing Free Tier includes one non-preemptible e2-micro VM per month in eligible US regions, up to 30 GB of standard persistent disk, and 1 GB of outbound transfer. The VM offer is not available in every region, so select an eligible US region before creating the instance.
Google requires a billing account even when you intend to stay within the Free Tier. If you do not upgrade after the trial and grace period, your workloads are deleted. If you do upgrade, unused trial credit remains available until its original 90-day expiration.

Google Cloud’s interface and billing model are powerful but easy to overspend with. Premium-tier networking, snapshots, extra disks, static external IP addresses, and traffic over the allowance can consume credit or become billable after upgrading.
3. Amazon EC2: the AWS-native choice
New AWS customers from July 15, 2025 onward receive up to $200 in AWS Free Tier credits and a six-month Free Tier period. Accounts created before that date may still follow the older 12-month rules. Do not assume that the familiar “12 months free” description applies to a new 2026 account.

EC2 usage can qualify for up to 750 instance-hours per month, depending on the current Free Tier instance and resource rules. New customers can choose an AWS Free plan or a paid plan. A paid plan gives you access to resources beyond the free limits and applies remaining eligible credits to AWS bills, but it also makes overages billable.
To create a VM, open Amazon EC2 console → Instances → Launch instance. Confirm the instance family, storage, operating system, region, and public IPv4 usage before launching.

Set a usage alert immediately: AWS Billing and Cost Management console → Billing preferences → Alert preferences → Edit → Receive AWS Free Tier usage alerts → Update.
Deleting an EC2 instance does not necessarily delete its EBS volumes, snapshots, Elastic IP addresses, or other related resources. Public IPv4 usage is free only within the applicable 750-hour allowance; excess public IPv4 usage is charged separately.
4. Amazon Lightsail: easier than EC2
Lightsail is AWS’s simplified VPS product. It offers a more predictable interface than EC2, with bundled compute, storage, and transfer on selected plans.
The current trial lasts 90 days for selected plans, including certain Linux/Unix plans priced at $5, $7, and $12 per month, selected Windows plans, and some IPv6-only plans. This is separate from the newer six-month AWS account Free Tier.
Lightsail is a good choice when you want a conventional VPS without learning EC2’s many independent billing components. It is less suitable if you need a particular EC2 instance family, advanced networking architecture, or a broad selection of managed AWS services.
Check that the exact plan and add-ons are included before deploying. Extra snapshots, static IP usage, data transfer, or products outside the trial list may not be covered. Resources left active after the trial become billable.
5. Microsoft Azure: best for Windows testing
Azure Free Account provides $200 in credit for 30 days, plus free monthly amounts of more than 20 popular services for 12 months and selected always-free services. It is one of the more useful trials for testing Windows Server, Microsoft tooling, and Azure-specific deployments.

Microsoft may place a temporary $1 authorization on the payment card. It is reversed and is not the same as a service charge.
The Azure Free Account spending limit normally matches the available credit. When you reach it, VMs are stopped and deallocated and resources may be removed from production. However, the limit does not protect every purchase: Marketplace products, licenses, support plans, and some third-party services can create separate charges.
Review the account from Azure portal → search “Cost Management + Billing” → select the subscription or billing scope. When the 30-day credit is nearly exhausted, export anything you need and delete test resources—or upgrade deliberately if you want to keep them.
6. Kamatera: a flexible 30-day cloud VPS
Kamatera offers up to $100 in cloud-service credit for one server for 30 days. You can choose the data center, operating system, CPU, RAM, storage, and other server settings, making it more representative of a normal configurable VPS than a micro instance.
The trial includes one cloud server, up to 1 TB of block storage, and up to 1 TB of traffic. A valid credit card is required.
The credit is an allowance, not unrestricted cash. A large configuration can consume $100 before the 30 days end. If you want to use the entire period, start with a small server and scale it only when needed. Delete the server and any separately billed storage when testing is complete.
7. UpCloud: useful, but verify the trial length
UpCloud’s own pages currently show conflicting terms. Its Getting Started FAQ says seven days, while a newer marketing page advertises 14 days and €250 in free credit. The term shown during your signup should be treated as authoritative.
The stable trial restrictions are clearer:
- Linux cloud servers only;
- Up to 2 CPUs;
- Up to 4 GB of RAM;
- Up to 60 GB of storage;
- Up to 1 TB of transfer;
- No Windows server deployment during the trial.
A card is required for identity verification, and UpCloud may place a temporary $0 or $1 authorization. Trial servers have a firewall enabled that permits only standard web-server ports. You can delete and redeploy within the trial quotas.
To keep using the server, UpCloud requires a one-time deposit of at least $10 or €10. Because the provider’s advertised duration is inconsistent, do not plan a multi-week test until the signup screen confirms the exact deadline.

8. Akamai Connected Cloud: $100 for eligible new customers
Akamai Connected Cloud, formerly Linode, offers eligible new customers $100 in promotional credit. The credit can cover many Compute plans, Object Storage, Block Storage, and NodeBalancers. GPU plans are excluded, and usage beyond the credit is charged at standard rates.
This is a good trial for Linux cloud infrastructure when you want a familiar root-server workflow and access to related storage services. The promotional page does not state a universal duration in its headline, so avoid repeating older “60-day” claims unless that period appears in the promotion attached to your signup.
Credit may fail to appear when the promotion link is expired or the account has already used a trial. Check the balance in Cloud Manager under the account billing area before launching anything expensive.
9. IONOS Cloud: a minute-billed trial
IONOS advertises a $200 starting credit for 30 days on its US cloud-server signup page. The initial test account has limited access; payment details are needed to activate the full version.
IONOS Cloud documentation describes test-account resources of up to 8 cores, 20 GB of RAM, 600 GB of SSD/HDD storage, and one static IP, with a 30-day or €500 maximum-consumption limit. The US marketing page and documentation use different currencies and figures, so the exact allowance depends on the regional product and signup flow.
Resources are billed by the minute with no minimum contract period. If you continue after the trial, the account becomes productive and the saved payment method is used for billing. Deleting a server stops its resource charges, but it is not necessarily the same as canceling the account or contract.
10. VPSserver.com: a straightforward root VPS test
VPSserver.com offers a 30-day trial with up to $100 in service credits. It provides a real cloud VPS with root access and lets you select the operating system, vCPU, RAM, NVMe storage, and data center.
The provider shows a starter configuration at $4 per month or $0.005 per hour. Plans advertise between 1 TB and 5 TB of traffic, or 50 Mbit/s unmetered options depending on configuration. Additional traffic can be billed.

Cancel before the trial ends if you are only testing deployment, SSH access, backups, or a web stack.

11. Cloudways Flexible: a managed hosting trial, not a raw VPS
Cloudways Flexible provides a three-day trial without requiring a credit card. It is useful for testing a managed server, deploying an application, or migrating a website, but it should not be described as an unrestricted VPS. Cloudways manages the underlying infrastructure and does not provide the same control as a conventional root server.
The current path is Cloudways Platform → Cloudways Flexible → Get Started → 3-days free trial. Select the server and application details, then choose Launch Now.
After the trial, add a valid card and upgrade to Full Access. Cloudways also documents a separate three-day Autonomous trial for WordPress and WooCommerce. That trial uses a US data center, a Cloudways domain, 15 GB of disk, 50 GB of bandwidth, and 10,000 visits. Reaching a limit ends the trial immediately.

Vultr does not currently offer a stable, universal public VPS trial with terms that apply to every new account. Its verified current offer is a promotion for OpenClaw on Vultr: seven days and up to $25 in credit.
That makes Vultr appropriate only when you are specifically testing the promoted OpenClaw deployment. Do not list it as a general free VPS trial unless the signup page presents a separate offer for your account.
How to avoid an unexpected VPS bill
- Record the expiration date. Put the end date in your calendar and set a reminder several days early.
- Use the smallest suitable VM. A two-core server is unnecessary for testing SSH, Nginx, Docker, or a simple application.
- Check all billable components. Look for disks, snapshots, public IPv4 addresses, load balancers, databases, reserved IPs, and traffic.
- Configure alerts before deployment. AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Oracle, and other platforms expose billing or budget screens; use them.
- Do not assume a stopped VM costs nothing. Stopping compute may leave storage and IP charges active.
- Delete, then verify. Confirm the resource list and billing page show no unwanted active components.
- Back up before expiry. Trial workloads may be stopped, deleted, or reclaimed when the credit runs out.
- Read the signup terms, not an old blog post. AWS’s account-age rules, Oracle’s A1 capacity, UpCloud’s duration, and Akamai’s promotion period have all changed or vary by offer.
Which free VPS trial should you choose?

Oracle Cloud is the strongest long-term choice because eligible Always Free compute does not expire. Google Cloud is another option with one eligible free e2-micro VM per month, although it is restricted to eligible US regions and has small disk and transfer allowances.
Do free VPS trials require a credit card?

Will a free VPS automatically start charging after the trial?
It can. Temporary credits normally stop covering active resources when they expire or run out. Depending on the provider, the server may become billable, stop, or be deleted. Delete the VM and separately billed disks, snapshots, IP addresses, and other resources if you do not intend to continue.
Is Cloudways a free VPS provider?
Cloudways offers a short managed-hosting trial, not an unrestricted raw VPS. It is suitable for testing managed applications and website migrations, but it does not provide the same root-level control as providers such as Kamatera, UpCloud, or VPSserver.com.

For a VM you can keep beyond a promotional period, start with Oracle Always Free and consider Google Cloud’s eligible e2-micro tier. For a normal configurable VPS, Kamatera is the clearest 30-day test, while UpCloud, Akamai Connected Cloud, IONOS, and VPSserver.com are useful alternatives with stricter or variable terms.
