There is no single best cloud host for every website or application. Atlantic.Net is the longest-established provider here, and it leads the list for buyers who weigh an operator’s track record and support commitments alongside price. For most developers who want a straightforward self-managed server, DigitalOcean is the safest default. Hetzner Cloud usually offers the strongest raw price-to-resource value, particularly in Europe. For users who do not want to administer Linux, Cloudways is the better managed option, while Hostinger Cloud is the more beginner-friendly website-hosting choice.
The important qualification is that these are not all the same product. This comparison includes managed website hosting, unmanaged cloud VPS services, and hyperscale infrastructure. A $5 virtual machine is not a direct substitute for a managed WordPress plan that includes migrations, staging, backups, support, and server tooling.
Prices and product details in this guide were checked August 9, 2026. Prices are generally in USD before tax unless stated otherwise; region, availability, usage, billing term, renewal pricing, and promotions can change. Recheck the provider’s pricing page before purchasing.
Quick recommendations
| Service | Best for | Management | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atlantic.Net | Buyers weighing provider longevity and support commitments | Unmanaged, with managed options | Configurations are quoted per build, so there is no published plan grid to compare against |
| DigitalOcean | Most developers and small technical teams | Unmanaged | Simple and predictable, but you manage the operating system, security, backups, and application |
| Hetzner Cloud | Lowest raw infrastructure cost | Unmanaged | Excellent value in Europe, but fewer locations and additional IPv4 cost |
| Cloudways | Managed WordPress, PHP, ecommerce, and agency hosting | Managed platform | Management convenience adds a premium over the underlying cloud provider |
| Hostinger Cloud | Beginners, small businesses, and managed websites | Managed web hosting | Low price depends on a long initial term and it is not a root-controlled VM |
| Amazon Lightsail | A simple entry point into AWS | Mostly unmanaged | Less flexible than EC2; transfer allowances and regional exceptions matter |
| Akamai Cloud, formerly Linode | Developers wanting simple plans and generous transfer | Unmanaged | Smaller service catalog than AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud |
| Vultr | Broad geographic choice and specialized VM types | Unmanaged | Prices vary by region, and stopped servers continue billing |
| UpCloud | SLA-focused buyers and predictable egress | Unmanaged | Production-oriented Premium plans cost much more than entry-level Starter plans |
| Google Cloud Compute Engine | Global infrastructure and Google Cloud integrations | Unmanaged IaaS | Total pricing depends heavily on machine type, region, storage, and egress |
For large-scale, regulated, or highly integrated workloads, also evaluate AWS beyond Lightsail, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. They offer more sophisticated networking, identity, databases, compliance options, and scaling patterns, but they require more technical expertise and careful cost modeling.

What cloud hosting actually means
"Cloud hosting" is an overloaded marketing term. It can describe:
- A managed hosting package marketed as cloud hosting.
- A virtual private server running on cloud infrastructure.
- An infrastructure-as-a-service virtual machine, such as a DigitalOcean Droplet or Google Compute Engine VM.
- A managed application, container, or platform-as-a-service product.
- A distributed architecture made from several services, such as virtual machines, managed databases, object storage, load balancers, and a CDN.
Those options differ substantially in price, control, responsibility, and reliability. A single VPS may run on modern cloud infrastructure while still being one server, one operating-system failure domain, and one application failure point. The word cloud does not automatically provide failover, replicated storage, disaster recovery, or zero downtime.
How this comparison was evaluated
The recommendations use public pricing, documentation, billing rules, backup information, regional availability, stated SLAs, management scope, and fit for small-business and developer workloads. They are editorial use-case recommendations, not claims that all ten providers were personally benchmarked.
A meaningful performance ranking would require identical regions, equivalent instance sizes, operating-system images, software versions, workloads, traffic patterns, and measurement periods. Without that controlled test, claims such as "fastest cloud host" or "most reliable provider" would be misleading.
The comparison also treats total ownership cost as more important than the smallest advertised number. A realistic bill can include a server, public IPv4, storage, snapshots, automatic backups, managed databases, load balancers, CDN or WAF services, egress, support, taxes, and renewal pricing.
1. Atlantic.Net — best long-established provider for fast, supported deployments
Best for: Buyers who weigh an operator’s track record and support commitments as heavily as the monthly price, and teams that would rather deploy a one-click application image than assemble a stack on a bare operating system.
Atlantic.Net has been in business since 1994, which makes it one of America’s and the world’s most experienced hosting providers. The company describes its cloud platform as built from the ground up for ease of use and cost effectiveness, backed by a 100% SLA and always-available support, and running on world-class data center infrastructure. It states that servers can be provisioned in less than 30 seconds and that every instance is backed by NVMe and SSD RAID 10 storage.
The catalog also includes multiple one-click applications, now also including OpenClaw and Herbes Agent hosting, so a stack that would otherwise need manual installation can be launched from the control panel rather than built by hand after first boot.
Important limitation
Unlike the other providers in this comparison, Atlantic.Net does not publish a single plan grid that could be checked line by line on the review date; cloud configurations are quoted per build, which is why no price appears for it here. Request the current recurring price, the renewal terms, and the cost of any managed add-on before comparing it with a $4 Droplet or a $3.50 UpCloud Starter server. A cloud instance is also unmanaged unless management is bought with it, so operating-system updates, firewall rules, backups, monitoring, and recovery stay with you.
Verdict: Choose Atlantic.Net when three decades of continuous operation, a stated availability commitment, and support you can reach at any hour matter more than reading a published price grid. Read that 100% SLA as you would any other on this page: it defines what the provider commits to and what it credits when it misses, not a guarantee that a single server cannot go down.
2. DigitalOcean — best overall self-managed cloud VPS
Best for: Developers and small technical teams that want an uncomplicated virtual machine with a useful dashboard, API, marketplace images, and a clear path to managed databases, Kubernetes, and other services.
DigitalOcean is the strongest default recommendation when the buyer is comfortable managing a Linux server. Its Droplets currently start at $4 per month for 512 MiB of RAM, one vCPU, 10 GiB of SSD storage, and 500 GiB of transfer. A more realistic small-production comparison is the 4 GiB, two-vCPU plan at $24 per month, with 80 GiB of SSD storage and 4,000 GiB of transfer.
Droplets moved to per-second billing on January 1, 2026, with a 60-second minimum and a monthly cap. Inbound bandwidth is free, while included outbound transfer depends on the plan. Backups cost extra: the listed percentage-based options are 20% of the Droplet price for weekly backups or 30% for daily backups; usage-based backups start at $0.01 per GiB-month. Snapshots are listed at $0.06 per GB-month. Confirm the current billable details for the selected region and resources.
What DigitalOcean does well
- Clean, relatively easy-to-learn VM management.
- Predictable Droplet plans and a monthly cap despite hourly or per-second usage accounting.
- APIs, one-click applications, monitoring, managed databases, Kubernetes, storage, and networking products.
- A useful middle ground between a budget VPS and a full hyperscale cloud.
Important limitation
A Droplet is unmanaged IaaS. According to DigitalOcean’s Droplet documentation, the customer is responsible for the operating system, applications, and data. You must configure SSH access, firewall rules, updates, backups, monitoring, database maintenance, and recovery. "Simple" means the product is easy to provision; it does not mean that the server is maintained for you.
Verdict: Choose DigitalOcean if you want a straightforward cloud VPS and can handle routine Linux administration. Choose Cloudways or Hostinger instead if you want the provider to handle much of the web-server and website-operations work.
3. Hetzner Cloud — best raw value, especially in Europe
Best for: Technical users who want as much compute, memory, storage, and transfer as possible for the money and whose users can be served well from Hetzner’s available locations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not use pre-June 2026 prices when comparing Hetzner. Under the June 15, 2026 price adjustment, the European CX23 is listed at €5.49 per month excluding IPv4, or $6.49 per month excluding IPv4, in Germany and Finland. The new prices apply to new orders and cloud-instance rescales from that date. A primary public IPv4 address costs an additional €0.50 per month excluding VAT, and cloud servers do not automatically include a public IP.
Hetzner provides hourly billing with a monthly cap. However, a server continues to incur charges while powered off until it is deleted. That distinction matters when testing images or temporarily taking a site offline. Shared-resource plans suit variable or moderate workloads; dedicated-resource plans provide more predictable CPU performance and cost more.
Reliability and backups
Hetzner’s Cloud SLA targets 99.9% monthly availability for each individual Cloud Server; that is not a promise that an application will achieve 99.9% uptime. Its automatic backups provide seven daily backup slots, but attached Volumes are not included in server backups. Back up databases, uploaded media, and volumes separately, and keep an off-site copy.

Hetzner’s location set is smaller than those of AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, or Vultr. Its price advantage can disappear if the server is far from customers, a database, a payment provider, or a required compliance region. Also check architecture compatibility: Hetzner states that its Arm64 CAX plans do not support Windows Server.

Verdict: Hetzner is the value leader when the location works and the buyer can self-manage. Compare the complete cost, including IPv4, backups, volumes, and taxes—not just the headline CX23 price.
4. Cloudways — best managed cloud platform
Best for: Business owners, agencies, WordPress users, PHP developers, and ecommerce operators who want cloud capacity without administering the full Linux and web-server stack.
Cloudways currently presents managed cloud servers from approximately $11 per month, although its pricing page contains several provider, plan, and promotional blocks. Verify the exact configuration and checkout total before purchasing. Cloudways can deploy infrastructure from DigitalOcean, Vultr, Akamai Cloud/Linode, AWS, and Google Cloud.
The platform advertises managed application and server tooling, free migration, SSL, staging, caching options, firewall features, and 24/7 support. DigitalOcean, Akamai/Linode, and Vultr servers generally use a capped monthly model within Cloudways; AWS and Google Cloud pricing is passed through using their more usage-sensitive models. Off-site backups, advanced support, and some additional features may cost extra. Cloudways Autonomous is a separate managed WordPress product with autoscaling and usage-based charges.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why pay a management premium?
Buying the same underlying infrastructure directly can be cheaper, but the comparison is incomplete. Cloudways can save time on provisioning, migrations, SSL, staging, caching, routine configuration, and support. That has real value for an agency or business owner who would otherwise pay an employee or contractor to maintain the server.
Verdict: Cloudways is a better fit than a raw Droplet when the website matters more than operating-system control. It is not the cheapest way to buy compute, and the provider-specific bandwidth and backup rules should be read in the Cloudways billing guide.
5. Hostinger Cloud — best beginner-friendly managed website hosting
Best for: Beginners, small businesses, agencies, WordPress sites, and small ecommerce websites that value a control panel and included website features over root access.
Hostinger’s U.S. page lists Cloud Startup at $7.99 per month on a 48-month plan, Cloud Professional at $15.99 per month, and Cloud Enterprise at $29.99 per month. Cloud Startup is listed with four CPU cores, 4 GB of RAM, 100 GB of NVMe storage, managed hosting, a dedicated IP, CDN access, and support for up to 100 websites. It also advertises a 99.9% uptime guarantee, daily backups on cloud plans, free SSL, a qualifying free domain for the applicable term, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The $7.99 figure is not a normal month-to-month comparison: it is tied to a four-year commitment and requires a substantial upfront payment. Before checkout, record the renewal price, total amount charged, tax, refund conditions, domain terms, backup scope, email inclusions, and plan limits. See Hostinger’s plan limits and backup documentation.
Hostinger Cloud is managed web hosting, not a conventional general-purpose VM with root control. That is an advantage for a website owner who does not want to maintain Linux, but a disadvantage for a developer deploying custom system services.
Verdict: Hostinger Cloud is a practical beginner choice when the long-term term price and renewal terms are acceptable. Do not compare its promotional price directly with an unmanaged VPS without accounting for the management and bundled website features.
6. Amazon Lightsail — best simple entry into AWS
Best for: Small websites and applications that want simple bundled pricing today and a straightforward path to AWS databases, storage, CDN, queues, identity, or other services later.

IPv6-only bundles start at $3.50 per month with the same listed RAM, vCPU, storage, and transfer. Lightsail includes a static IP, DNS management, browser-based SSH for Linux, RDP for Windows, monitoring, and an API. Snapshots cost $0.05 per GB-month, while block storage starts at $0.10 per allocated GB-month.
Some Asia-Pacific and South American regions receive half the listed transfer allowance. The low IPv6-only price can also create operational issues if users, APIs, monitoring systems, mail systems, or corporate networks still expect IPv4. Check the regional Lightsail pricing table before deployment.
Lightsail is easier to understand than EC2, but it does not expose EC2’s full range of configuration and service options. A $5 Lightsail bundle also has far less than the 4 GB RAM used in a realistic small-production comparison, so the actual plan for a WordPress store or application may cost more. Snapshots, block storage, managed databases, transfer overages, and other AWS services can increase the bill.
Verdict: Choose Lightsail when AWS ecosystem access matters but EC2’s complexity does not. Choose DigitalOcean or Akamai Cloud for a cleaner standalone developer VPS.
7. Akamai Cloud, formerly Linode — best straightforward developer alternative
Best for: Developers who want simple plans, API access, generous included transfer, SSD storage, Linux distributions, and a provider connected to Akamai’s wider network ecosystem.
The current commercial identity is Akamai Cloud, although the Linode name remains widely used. Akamai’s European pricing page lists the Nanode 1 GB at $5 per month, with one vCPU, 25 GB of storage, and 1 TB of transfer. The listed Linode 2 GB plan costs $12 per month and includes 2 GB of RAM, one vCPU, 50 GB of storage, and 2 TB of transfer. Review the regional pricing page because prices and availability vary.

- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
Akamai offers compute instances, APIs, Linux images, managed Kubernetes, and other cloud services. Most services use a monthly cap plus hourly usage. However, from July 1, 2026, G8 dedicated Linodes, GPU Linodes, and additional IPv4 addresses use actual-hours billing without a monthly cap, according to Akamai’s billing documentation.
Verdict: Akamai Cloud is a strong DigitalOcean alternative, especially when transfer allowance or Akamai’s network ecosystem matters. Its smaller catalog makes it less suitable than a hyperscaler for complex enterprise architectures.

8. Vultr — best for geographic choice and specialized instance types
Best for: Buyers who need a particular global region or want to choose among shared CPU, dedicated CPU, high-frequency, high-performance, GPU, and bare-metal products.
Vultr’s Cloud Compute datasheet describes shared-CPU instances starting at $5 per month, with storage and bandwidth included. It positions Cloud Compute for bursty workloads, low-traffic websites, development, testing, CMS applications, and small databases. Its documentation describes 33 global cloud data-center regions, although availability and prices vary by location.
Vultr bills servers hourly, with most non-GPU server types capped at 672 hours per month. A critical billing trap is that stopping a server does not stop the compute charge. You normally have to destroy the server after taking a recoverable image if your objective is to end compute billing. Also, according to Vultr’s FAQ, a Cloud Compute instance cannot be downgraded after deployment; select the initial size carefully.
Standard Cloud Compute uses shared CPU and regular SSD. Do not describe every Vultr product as high performance: high-frequency, dedicated, GPU, and bare-metal plans are separate categories with different pricing and behavior.
Verdict: Vultr is a good choice when location is as important as price or when you need specialized compute without moving to a hyperscaler. Check the location-specific pricing documentation.
9. UpCloud — best for SLA emphasis and zero-cost egress
Best for: Production-oriented buyers who value a stated SLA, fixed pricing, and avoiding conventional outbound-transfer charges.
UpCloud Starter servers begin at $3.50 per month for 1 GB of RAM, one CPU core, and 10 GB of standard storage. Starter plans include a stated 99.99% SLA, IPv4, and zero-cost egress subject to UpCloud’s Fair Transfer Policy. They are billed from the starting hour with a maximum of 28 days per month.
UpCloud’s Premium plans are designed for production workloads and carry a stated 99.999% SLA, but they begin at substantially higher prices than the Starter range. Backups are separately priced, either as a percentage of the server plan or by storage usage, depending on the selected option. "Zero-cost egress" does not mean unlimited abuse of the network; the Fair Transfer Policy still applies.
Verdict: UpCloud deserves consideration when transfer cost and SLA language are central to the buying decision. Do not use its $3.50 Starter price as a proxy for a production 4 GB application server or for Premium infrastructure.
10. Google Cloud Compute Engine — best for global and integrated cloud infrastructure
Best for: Applications that need Google Cloud’s regions, managed databases, Kubernetes, analytics, AI, identity, networking, or sophisticated scaling options.
Compute Engine is usage-priced rather than sold as one simple VPS bundle. Google charges for the VM with additional charges potentially applying to disk, images, network, GPUs, and other services. VM vCPU and memory are charged for a minimum of one minute and then in one-second increments. Machine families include general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, network-optimized, and accelerator-optimized options.
The total price depends on region, machine family, operating system, disk type and size, network egress, commitments, and discounts. That makes a tiny VM’s apparent price a poor estimate for a real application. Use the Compute Engine pricing documentation and calculator to model the complete architecture.
Recommended Free Tools
Verdict: Google Cloud is the better choice when its global platform and managed services solve a real requirement. It is not the best beginner VPS merely because a small VM can be configured cheaply.
Managed cloud hosting versus an unmanaged cloud VPS
This is the most important decision in the entire comparison.
Managed hosting
Depending on the product, the provider or platform may handle server provisioning, operating-system and web-server configuration, SSL and domain tools, basic hardening, backups, staging, migrations, caching, and support. Hostinger Cloud and Cloudways fit this category, although their management scope is different.
Managed hosting is usually the right choice for a business owner, agency, WordPress operator, or store owner who does not want to troubleshoot Linux at midnight. The premium pays for reduced administration and a lower risk of configuration mistakes. It does not mean the provider will fix every application bug, plugin conflict, compromised account, or custom code problem.
Unmanaged hosting
With an unmanaged VPS or VM, the customer generally handles SSH users and keys, firewall rules, operating-system updates, web-server and runtime configuration, database maintenance, malware response, backups and restoration, monitoring, and incident response. DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Vultr, Akamai Cloud, UpCloud, Lightsail, and Compute Engine are primarily in this category for ordinary VM deployments.

- Universal 19” Rack Mount Compatibility – Perfect for pro audio, video, IT, and network gear. Compatible with mixers, routers, patch panels, servers, power amps, and more.
- Heavy-Duty Load Capacity – Built to support up to 550 lbs. Ideal for studio gear, DJ setups, server equipment, and AV components that demand serious stability.
- Robust Steel Frame & Design – Made with 1.5mm thick steel and weighs 36 lbs for maximum durability, reduced vibration, and long-term reliability in any setting.
- Mobile & Secure – Preinstalled with 3” industrial-grade caster wheels (lockable), making it easy to move and position your rack exactly where you need it.
- All-In-One Setup Kit Included – Comes with 34 rack screws (5mm & 6mm), a 1U blank spacer, and an assembly tool—ready for fast installation out of the box.
If you cannot configure a firewall, apply security updates, diagnose memory exhaustion, restore a database, rotate credentials, configure DNS and TLS, and respond to a compromise, an unmanaged VPS is not automatically affordable. The cost of a mistake or outage can exceed the monthly server fee.
Is cloud hosting better than shared hosting?
Sometimes, but not by definition.
Advantages of cloud hosting
- More isolated resources than many shared-hosting plans.
- Easier resizing as traffic or application requirements change.
- More control over the operating system, runtime, database, and network.
- Better suitability for APIs, ecommerce, databases, background workers, and custom software.
- More options for load balancing, separate application tiers, and multi-server architecture.
Disadvantages of cloud hosting
- Higher potential cost once backups, storage, IPv4, transfer, and management are included.
- More administration and more ways to misconfigure security.
- Backups, updates, monitoring, and recovery may be the customer’s responsibility.
- Usage-based services can make billing less predictable.
- A poorly configured cloud VM can be less secure than a well-managed shared-hosting account.
For a static brochure site, consider static hosting, object storage, or a CDN before renting a VM. For a standard WordPress site, managed hosting may be more practical. A cloud VPS becomes more compelling when you need custom software, sustained resources, a private runtime, background jobs, or control over the operating system.
Head-to-head comparisons
DigitalOcean versus Hetzner Cloud
Choose DigitalOcean for a smoother general-purpose developer experience, APIs, one-click applications, managed databases, Kubernetes, and a broader range of easy-to-understand products. Choose Hetzner for lower raw infrastructure cost when Europe or one of its available locations provides acceptable latency. Include Hetzner’s IPv4 charge, current June 2026 pricing, backups, and any volume costs before calling it cheaper.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
DigitalOcean versus Vultr
DigitalOcean is the simpler default for many small teams. Vultr is more attractive when a specific city or region is decisive or when high-frequency, dedicated, GPU, or bare-metal options may be needed. Compare actual regional plans rather than assuming the $5 headline price is identical everywhere.
DigitalOcean versus Akamai Cloud
Both offer approachable developer-oriented VMs. Akamai/Linode can be attractive for included transfer and network reach, while DigitalOcean has a particularly clear product experience and a strong set of adjacent managed services. Compare region availability, plan generation, IPv4 treatment, transfer, and the services your application will actually use.
Cloudways versus DigitalOcean
Cloudways is the better choice when you want managed web-server operations, migrations, staging, caching options, and support. Direct DigitalOcean is cheaper and more flexible for a technical operator who can manage the stack. Cloudways may even use DigitalOcean infrastructure, but the two purchases provide different service levels.
Hostinger Cloud versus Cloudways
Hostinger Cloud is more turnkey for websites and offers a long-term promotional price with bundled hosting features. Cloudways offers a platform over several cloud infrastructure providers and is often more appealing to agencies managing multiple applications or wanting provider choice. Compare renewal pricing, resource limits, backups, support scope, and whether root or system-level control is required.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Lightsail versus DigitalOcean
Lightsail wins when the application will grow into AWS services and you want a simpler starting interface. DigitalOcean is usually cleaner as a standalone developer cloud. Lightsail’s transfer allowance, IPv6-only option, regional exceptions, snapshots, and additional AWS services must be included in the bill.
UpCloud versus Hetzner
Hetzner is usually the stronger raw-value candidate where its locations work. UpCloud is more compelling for buyers who prioritize its stated SLA structure and zero-cost egress subject to the Fair Transfer Policy. Compare the exact resource tier: UpCloud’s cheap Starter product and higher-priced Premium product should not be treated as the same service.
Simple VPS providers versus AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud
DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Akamai Cloud, Vultr, and UpCloud are easier to price and operate for a single server or small application. AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud are preferable when you need enterprise identity, private networking, managed databases, global failover, compliance programs, advanced observability, Windows/.NET integration, or a larger service ecosystem.
For Windows or .NET workloads, include Microsoft Azure’s VM pricing and licensing model alongside AWS and Google Cloud. Do not select a Linux-oriented low-cost plan simply because its price is lower if the application depends on Windows software or ARM-incompatible binaries.

Use this scenario when comparing providers: one small production website or application, two vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 50–100 GB storage, 500 GB of monthly outbound transfer, daily backups, one public IPv4 address, and a North American or European region.
| Provider | What the published price tells you | What must be added or verified for the scenario |
|---|---|---|
| Atlantic.Net | Nothing, in this case: there is no published plan grid, because cloud configurations are quoted per build. | Request a written quote for two vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, and the storage and transfer in the scenario above, then confirm the recurring price, renewal terms, backup pricing, IPv4 treatment, and whether any management is included. |
| DigitalOcean | The 4 GiB/two-vCPU plan is $24/month, with 80 GiB SSD and 4,000 GiB transfer. | Daily backups add the listed 30% percentage-based charge, or $7.20 if applied to the $24 plan; weekly backups would be $4.80. Confirm IPv4 and any other selected resources. |
| Hetzner Cloud | The European CX23 is €5.49/month excluding IPv4, or $6.49 in the listed Germany/Finland pricing. | Add the €0.50/month IPv4 charge excluding VAT, then verify the current plan’s RAM, storage, transfer, backup, and volume prices. Powered-off servers continue billing until deleted. |
| Hostinger Cloud | Cloud Startup is listed at $7.99/month on a 48-month term with 4 CPU cores, 4 GB RAM, 100 GB NVMe, managed hosting, and a dedicated IP. | Check the total upfront payment, renewal price, tax, refund conditions, traffic/resource limits, and included backup scope. It is managed web hosting, not a directly comparable VM. |
| Cloudways | Plans are presented from approximately $11/month, depending on provider and configuration. | Choose the underlying provider and server size, then add or verify off-site backups, bandwidth, support features, and any paid add-ons. |
| Lightsail | The $5 Linux IPv4 bundle has only 0.5 GB RAM; the $3.50 option is IPv6-only. | Select a larger plan for 4 GB RAM and check region-specific transfer, snapshots, block storage, and any AWS services. |
| Akamai Cloud | The $5 Nanode has 1 GB RAM; the listed $12 Linode 2 GB has 2 GB RAM. | A 4 GB scenario requires a larger plan. Check the region, generation, IPv4 treatment, and whether the selected product uses the new uncapped actual-hours billing rules. |
| Vultr | Shared Cloud Compute starts at $5/month, with storage and bandwidth included. | Choose the region and size, check the 672-hour cap, and remember that stopping rather than destroying the server does not end billing. |
| UpCloud | The $3.50 Starter plan has 1 GB RAM, one core, and 10 GB storage. | A 4 GB production server will use a higher tier. Add backup pricing and verify Fair Transfer Policy treatment. |
| Google Cloud | There is no single comparable bundle; VM, disk, network, and other services are separately modeled. | Use the calculator with region, machine family, disk, operating system, egress, backups, and any managed services. |
This table deliberately shows why a single "cheapest cloud hosting" winner is unreliable. The $5 plans do not all contain the same RAM, storage, IP behavior, management, backup, or support. A $25 managed plan may be cheaper in practice than a $5 VM if it prevents several hours of administration or a costly outage.

- Provider infrastructure availability: whether the provider’s facilities and platform are operating.
- VM availability: whether your individual virtual machine is running.
- Network reachability: whether users can reach the server over the required protocols and IP versions.
- Application uptime: whether DNS, TLS, the web server, code, database, and dependencies work together.
- Data durability: whether data survives hardware, software, or account failure.
- Recovery time objective: how quickly service can be restored.
- Recovery point objective: how much recent data can be lost after a failure.
An SLA usually applies to a specific service, region, measurement period, and set of exclusions. It may provide service credits rather than compensation for lost sales. The stated 99.9% Hetzner Cloud Server target, Hostinger uptime guarantee, UpCloud Starter 99.99% SLA, and UpCloud Premium 99.999% SLA are useful evidence about provider commitments, but none guarantees the uptime of a misconfigured application.
Reliability comes from architecture, backups, monitoring, failover, and tested recovery—not from the word cloud in a product name.

Before putting a business site or application online:
- Use SSH keys rather than password-only administrator access.
- Create a least-privilege deployment user and avoid using a permanent root login.
- Configure a firewall with only required ports exposed.
- Apply operating-system, web-server, runtime, CMS, plugin, and database security updates.
- Enable automatic updates where appropriate and test updates before applying them to production.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk space, certificate expiry, application errors, and database health—not just ping response.
- Use external uptime monitoring so an outage is visible even when the provider dashboard is unavailable.
- Back up the database daily and back up uploaded media, configuration, and attached volumes separately where necessary.
- Keep at least one off-site backup outside the primary server, region, or provider account.
- Perform an actual restore test. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
- Set billing alerts and review usage, egress, storage, IP, snapshot, and support charges.
- Subscribe to the provider status page and document who can respond to an outage.
- Keep control of DNS, domain registration, credentials, exported disk images, and a migration runbook.
Understand the backup terms
- Snapshot: usually a manually created point-in-time image.
- Automatic backup: a recurring provider-managed copy with a defined retention period.
- Database backup: a logical or physical database export that may be needed even when the VM is backed up.
- Off-site backup: a copy stored outside the primary failure domain.
- Disaster recovery: a tested method of rebuilding or restoring the service elsewhere.
A snapshot may remain in the same provider account, region, or control plane as the original. It may not include attached storage or external services. Hetzner explicitly excludes attached Volumes from server backups, a limitation that illustrates why readers should verify exactly what a provider restores.
Billing traps to check before signing up
Promotional and long-term pricing
Long-term introductory prices can make managed hosting appear cheaper than a month-to-month VM. Write down the billing term, amount paid upfront, renewal price, domain inclusion period, backup and email inclusions, tax, and refund eligibility. Hostinger’s $7.99 Cloud Startup figure is specifically associated with a 48-month plan; it should not be presented as a standard monthly rate.
IPv4 versus IPv6-only hosting
Some providers charge for IPv4 or offer a cheaper IPv6-only product. IPv6-only hosting may require NAT64, a proxy, or another compatibility layer for users and services that still expect IPv4. Hetzner Cloud does not include public IP addresses by default, while Lightsail’s cheaper $3.50 bundle is IPv6-only.

Stopped versus deleted servers
Stopping a server may leave its disk, IP address, allocated capacity, backup allocation, or attached volumes billable. Vultr and Hetzner explicitly continue billing stopped resources, and Cloudways documents similar behavior for some underlying providers. If the goal is to stop compute charges, take a recoverable image and delete resources according to the provider’s documented process.
Bandwidth and "unlimited" transfer
Unlimited or zero-cost transfer can still be subject to fair-use rules, port restrictions, resource limits, or acceptable-use policies. UpCloud’s zero-cost egress is subject to its Fair Transfer Policy. A provider’s stated transfer allowance should not be compared directly with another provider’s "unlimited" wording.
ARM compatibility
ARM instances can reduce cost, but proprietary binaries, Docker images, plugins, commercial control panels, and operating systems may not support ARM. Confirm architecture support before selecting an Arm-based plan. This is particularly important for Windows workloads and older software.
Account and provider failure
Service can become unavailable because of a billing failure, fraud or abuse review, account verification, capacity shortage, control-plane outage, expired payment method, quota limit, or accidental deletion. Maintain an exported backup, independent DNS access, and a tested restore path outside the primary account.
Who should not use a cloud VPS?
Choose shared hosting or managed cloud hosting instead if you:
- Do not want to use SSH.
- Cannot maintain Linux and a web-server stack.
- Need email, domain management, and a website builder bundled together.
- Have no backup, monitoring, or security process.
- Value responsive application-oriented support more than raw compute flexibility.
A managed plan is not less professional. It is a different allocation of responsibility. A technical team may rationally choose an unmanaged VPS, while a small business may rationally pay more for a platform that removes routine operational work.
How to choose in five steps
- Classify the workload. Static site, WordPress, WooCommerce, custom API, SaaS, database-heavy application, Windows/.NET, or global enterprise service.
- Choose the management level. If you cannot maintain the server, shortlist Hostinger Cloud or Cloudways before comparing VPS prices.
- Choose the region and architecture. Put the server near users, databases, payment systems, and third-party APIs. Confirm ARM, Windows, compliance, and data-residency requirements.
- Model the complete bill. Include server, IPv4, storage, snapshots, backups, transfer, database, CDN, WAF, licenses, support, tax, and renewal pricing.
- Design recovery before launch. Decide how you will restore the database, DNS, files, and application if the server, account, region, or provider becomes unavailable.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest reliable cloud hosting?
There is no location-independent winner. Hetzner Cloud is often the strongest raw-value option where its regions and current June 2026 pricing work, while UpCloud and low-cost VPS plans can be attractive for specific requirements. Include IPv4, backups, storage, transfer, taxes, and administration before comparing totals. A managed Hostinger or Cloudways plan may be cheaper in practice for a nontechnical owner.
Is cloud hosting worth it for WordPress?
It can be, especially for WooCommerce, high-traffic sites, custom plugins, APIs, or a need for more isolated resources. For an ordinary brochure or small blog, managed shared hosting may be simpler and cheaper. Hostinger Cloud and Cloudways are generally more appropriate than an unmanaged VM if you do not want to maintain Linux, PHP, the web server, security updates, and backups.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is DigitalOcean managed hosting?
No. A DigitalOcean Droplet is unmanaged infrastructure. You are responsible for the operating system, security, application stack, backups, monitoring, and recovery. DigitalOcean offers separate managed products, but provisioning a Droplet alone does not include application administration.
Is Hetzner reliable?
Hetzner publishes a 99.9% monthly availability target for each individual Cloud Server, but that does not guarantee application uptime or data recovery. Reliability still depends on backups, monitoring, architecture, and tested restoration. Also consider its smaller region set, IPv4 charge, and the fact that stopped servers continue billing until deleted.
Do stopped cloud servers still cost money?
Often, yes. Hetzner and Vultr explicitly continue billing stopped servers, and some Cloudways configurations have similar behavior through their underlying providers. Storage, IP addresses, volumes, and backups may also remain billable. If you want to end charges, follow the provider’s deletion process after creating a recoverable backup or image.
Do cloud hosts include backups?
Some managed plans advertise backups, but coverage and retention vary. VPS providers often charge separately for automatic backups or snapshots. Check whether databases, attached volumes, uploaded media, and configuration are included, where copies are stored, how long they are retained, and whether you can restore outside the provider account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How much RAM does WordPress need?
There is no universal requirement. A small, lightly used WordPress site may work on a low-memory plan, but themes, plugins, traffic, PHP workers, object caching, WooCommerce, and database size change the requirement. A 4 GB plan generally gives a small production WordPress or WooCommerce site more room than a 512 MB or 1 GB entry VM, but measure memory usage and tune the application rather than relying on a fixed number.
Is a free cloud server safe for production?
Free infrastructure can be used for production only when you understand its quotas, availability, support, architecture, and recovery limits. A free tier is best treated as a lab or experimental environment. Keep independent backups and do not make a revenue-critical service depend on capacity or eligibility that can change.
Which provider is best for ecommerce?
For a small WordPress or WooCommerce store, a managed service such as Cloudways or Hostinger Cloud may be the practical choice because support, SSL, staging, caching, and routine operations matter. A technical team with custom requirements may prefer DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Vultr, or another VPS provider. Evaluate database performance, backups, payment-provider latency, monitoring, security, and recovery—not just CPU and RAM.
Which provider is best for Windows?
Evaluate AWS, Microsoft Azure, or another provider with clear Windows licensing and image support. Confirm that the selected architecture supports Windows; for example, Hetzner states that its Arm64 CAX plans do not support Windows Server. Compare the complete licensed VM cost rather than using a cheap Linux plan as a benchmark.

Can I move my website later?
Usually, but portability depends on the application and services used. Keep domain and DNS access independent, export databases and files, retain restorable backups, and document environment variables and deployment steps. Provider-specific databases, object storage, queues, IAM, proprietary images, and control panels can make migration harder, so test a restore outside the primary provider before you need it.
Is cloud hosting better than a VPS?
The terms overlap. A cloud VPS is a virtual private server hosted on cloud infrastructure. Cloud hosting is sometimes used for managed hosting or a multi-service architecture. The meaningful questions are whether the server is managed, how resources are isolated, where it runs, how it is backed up, and whether it has redundancy. A single cloud VPS is still a single-server failure point.
The Bottom Line
Atlantic.Net leads this list on operating history rather than on price: a company hosting customers since 1994, with an availability and support commitment stated up front, for buyers who value that over a published price grid. For most technical users, start with DigitalOcean. Choose Hetzner Cloud when raw value and location make sense, Cloudways when you want managed operations, and Hostinger Cloud when you want beginner-friendly website hosting with a long-term promotional plan. Lightsail is the convenient AWS on-ramp; Vultr is strong for regional and specialized compute choice; Akamai Cloud is a capable Linode-derived developer alternative; UpCloud is worth a look for SLA and egress priorities; and Google Cloud is for broader cloud architecture.
Before ordering, decide who will administer the server, choose a nearby region, price the complete workload, and test your backup restoration process. Those decisions matter more to real-world reliability than the lowest advertised monthly number.
