The Zeal 8-bit Computer is a documented Zilog Z80 system for retrocomputing and low-level software development—not a polished, general-purpose PC. A Complete Edition bundle reported in July 2024 included the motherboard, a video expansion board, and an enclosure. That report is useful for understanding the bundle, but it is not a current price or availability check. Zeal’s current FAQ describes assembled motherboard and PCB-kit options, points buyers to Tindie, and says the software remains in progress.
What is the Zeal 8-bit Computer?
Zeal is a homebrew Z80 computer designed to make its hardware and software understandable. The project’s foreword describes a system intended for one person to explore from components such as ROM, RAM, I/O ports, and address and data buses through the operating-system internals. The project history says work began in early 2021. That makes it a fit for learning how a small computer works and writing low-level software, rather than for someone seeking a ready-made desktop replacement. Zeal project foreword
Processor and speed
The official CPU documentation identifies the processor as a Zilog Z80 Z84C0010 running at 10 MHz. Clock frequency is not the same as instructions completed per second: Z80 instructions take differing numbers of clock cycles. Zeal’s documentation estimates about 1.45 million instructions per second for this board; treat that as the project’s estimate, not an independent benchmark. Zeal CPU documentation
What did the Complete Edition include?
A CNX Software article dated July 12, 2024 reported the Complete Edition as a bundle of the motherboard, Zeal 8-bit Video Board, and a 3D-printed enclosure. It listed 512 KB RAM, 256 KB NOR flash upgradeable to 512 KB, and 32 KB I²C EEPROM, alongside 16-bit logical and 22-bit physical addressing. The article reported a price of $180 at that time. Zeal’s current FAQ describes the motherboard as available assembled or as a PCB kit and directs buyers to Tindie. The Complete Edition name and 2024 bundle report should not be taken as proof that the same package is currently listed. The Video Board guide lists 640×480 and 320×240 resolutions, RGB565 16-bit color, and a 128 KB mapped memory area. It describes the expansion as developer-targeted for games and graphical programs, not as an automatic feature of every motherboard purchase. Zeal Video Board guide

What you need to get started
- Connect a serial interface. Attach a USB-to-UART/USB-to-TTL adapter or another UART-capable device to a host computer, following the board’s connection guidance. The normal software serial setting is 57600 baud, 8N1. Verify that the interface supports 5V UART signal levels; do not assume every USB serial adapter does. Zeal getting-started guide
- Use a PS/2 keyboard for keyboard input in the current OS. The guide says Zeal 8-bit OS does not currently support keyboard input over UART. Connect PS/2 devices before powering on.
- Add the RTC battery only if you want time retention while powered off. The real-time clock uses a CR2032, CR2025, or CR2016 coin cell to preserve time when the computer is off; it is not a core power requirement.
- For VGA, confirm the expansion and software path. If using the Video Board on an existing system, check whether its connector is populated and whether the OS build or bootloader needs updating for video output and the supported keyboard path.
Is it a good fit for you?
- Consider it if you want a documented Z80 platform for studying computer hardware, experimenting with low-level programming, or developing games and graphical software.
- Expect an evolving platform. Zeal’s FAQ characterizes the release as developer-oriented because the OS and programs remain works in progress. The official software collection includes games, demos, apps, and development categories, so software exists, but the project is not presented as finished consumer software. Zeal software collection
- Look elsewhere if you need a turnkey modern computer with broad everyday-app support, or do not want to deal with serial setup, optional soldering, or project updates.
