Both YouTube Music and Spotify can play downloaded music offline on Android, but only with their paid music plans. Spotify is the better choice if you want a clearly published allowance of up to 10,000 tracks on each of five devices, selectable download quality, and an Offline Backup mix when you forget to save something. YouTube Music is the stronger fit if you value Smart Downloads, music-video downloads, and tight integration with YouTube. Its Android documentation says Smart Downloads can save up to 200 recently played songs, while total capacity depends on your phone’s free storage and the length and quality of your files.

Whichever app you choose, download over Wi-Fi, leave adequate storage free, and reconnect the app to the internet at least once every 30 days so its offline library remains active.

Do YouTube Music and Spotify support offline listening on Android?

Yes. Each app stores downloaded music on an Android device for playback without an active internet connection. The important distinction is membership: YouTube Music requires YouTube Music Premium for music downloads, and Spotify requires Premium for music downloads. A free account can still download podcasts on both services under their respective rules, but free Spotify users cannot download music.

Offline mode is useful for flights, commutes through coverage gaps, roaming, and reducing mobile-data use. Downloads are licensed app data rather than ordinary audio files, so they play inside the service that downloaded them and remain subject to that account’s subscription and catalog availability.

Which service is better for offline listening?

There is no single winner because the services optimize for different offline habits. Spotify offers the most predictable large-library limit and the clearest quality controls. YouTube Music offers more automatic discovery, direct access to music videos, and storage-based flexibility rather than a stated track ceiling.

Offline factor YouTube Music on Android Spotify on Android
Music-download requirement YouTube Music Premium Spotify Premium
Podcast downloads Available regardless of membership, according to YouTube Music’s Android help guidance Available for free users; music downloads still require Premium
How long downloads remain active Reconnect at least once every 30 days Go online at least once every 30 days so the library can sync
Published offline-library limit No fixed track/device maximum stated in the cited Android documentation; capacity depends on free storage, file length, and quality Up to 10,000 tracks on each of up to five devices
Automatic downloads Smart Downloads can save up to 200 recently played songs on Android Offline Backup creates an offline-ready mix from recent listening, queued tracks, and related activity when connectivity drops
Download-quality controls Audio and video quality controls are available; the cited Android documentation does not state a comparable maximum quality Download quality is selectable in Media Quality settings; lossless playback can reach up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC on supported devices, catalogs, and accounts
Music videos Premium members can download music videos as well as audio The cited offline documentation covers songs, albums, and playlists; a comparable music-video download feature is not stated

Choose Spotify when a published capacity, explicit quality choices, or a safety net for forgotten downloads matters most. Choose YouTube Music when the app’s recent-listening automation, video access, and YouTube ecosystem are more important than a fixed track count.

How do I download music for offline listening in YouTube Music?

YouTube Music Premium members can save individual songs, albums, playlists, videos, and podcast episodes to an Android phone or tablet. The basic process is the same for each item: open it in the YouTube Music app and tap the Download control. A download indicator appears while the app saves the item; wait for it to finish before leaving a reliable connection.

Download a song, album, or playlist

  1. Open YouTube Music on your Android device and sign in to the Premium account that will be used offline.
  2. Open the song, album, or playlist you want to keep.
  3. Tap the item’s Download button. For a playlist or album, downloading the collection saves its currently available tracks rather than creating ordinary files you can move to another app.
  4. Open the Downloads area to confirm the item is present before you go offline.

Downloaded playlists can refresh daily in the background when the device is connected to Wi-Fi. That keeps a saved playlist current, but it also means the app may use storage for newly added tracks and remove or replace tracks as the playlist changes.

Use Smart Downloads

Smart Downloads uses your listening history instead of requiring you to choose every song. YouTube Music’s Android help documentation says the feature can download up to 200 of your recently played songs. It is therefore a rotating, behavior-based cache rather than a guarantee that any particular album, artist, or playlist will be available.

  1. Open YouTube Music’s download settings.
  2. Enable Smart Downloads.
  3. Review the downloaded content after the first Wi-Fi session and remove anything you do not need.

You can manage audio and video quality, clear existing downloads, and choose whether downloads may use Wi-Fi only or permitted mobile data. Using Wi-Fi only is the safer setting before travel because video files and high-quality audio can consume substantial storage and data.

Download videos and podcasts

YouTube Music Premium covers music videos as well as audio tracks. You can also download podcast episodes, and YouTube Music states that podcast downloads do not require membership. Video downloads generally occupy more space than audio, so check available storage if you save both formats.

How do I download music for offline listening in Spotify?

Spotify Premium subscribers can download songs, albums, and playlists on Android. Open the collection you want and turn on its Download control; Spotify then stores the tracks for offline playback. A free Spotify account can download podcasts, but its music-download function is Premium-only.

Save a playlist or album

  1. Open Spotify and sign in to the Premium account you will use while offline.
  2. Open an album or playlist, then turn on Download.
  3. Leave Spotify connected until the download indicator shows completion.
  4. Before travel, open the downloaded collection and test playback with your device temporarily disconnected from the internet.

Downloading a playlist is usually the most practical way to prepare for a trip because it groups the tracks you expect to hear. Downloading individual songs is better for a small, tightly controlled selection, while albums preserve an artist’s intended sequence.

Set download quality

On Android, Spotify exposes download quality in its Media Quality settings. Higher quality improves detail but consumes more storage; lower quality fits more tracks in the same space. Spotify also documents lossless playback up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC on supported devices, catalogs, and accounts. That maximum is conditional, not a promise that every track or every Android phone will offer lossless downloads.

Change the quality before starting a large download. If you change it afterward, existing files may need to be removed and downloaded again at the new setting, so make the choice before preparing a trip.

Understand Offline Backup

Spotify’s Offline Backup is designed for the moment you lose connectivity without having deliberately downloaded enough music. It builds an offline-ready mix from recent listening, queued tracks, and other recent activity. Treat it as a fallback, not as a replacement for downloading a known playlist: its contents are selected automatically and can differ from the music you planned to hear.

How much music can I keep downloaded?

Spotify gives you a hard, easy-to-plan ceiling: up to 10,000 tracks per device, with downloads supported on as many as five devices. That is a device allowance, so each registered device can hold its own downloaded library within the stated limit. The documentation describes tracks rather than gigabytes, meaning actual storage use still varies with duration and quality.

YouTube Music does not state an equivalent fixed maximum number of tracks or devices in the cited Android documentation. Instead, it says download capacity depends on free storage, the length of saved files, and the selected quality. A phone with ample free space can therefore hold more short, lower-quality audio than long, high-quality files or downloaded videos.

If you care most about… More predictable choice Why
Planning a very large offline collection Spotify The 10,000-track-per-device and five-device allowance is published and easy to count against.
Letting the app refresh recent favorites YouTube Music Smart Downloads can automatically save up to 200 recently played songs.
Saving videos with the audio YouTube Music Premium downloads include music videos.
Fitting downloads around available storage YouTube Music Its documented capacity model is based on free space, file length, and quality rather than a stated track cap.
Choosing a documented high-end audio format Spotify Spotify documents up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC lossless playback where supported.

How should I manage Android storage for offline music?

Start by checking free space in Android’s storage settings before downloading. Leave room for app updates, photos, messages, and the operating system; filling the device completely can prevent both downloads and normal phone operation. Because YouTube Music counts file length and quality, long albums, concert recordings, and videos can consume space quickly.

Use quality settings strategically

  • Use a lower audio quality when you need many hours of background listening and have limited storage.
  • Reserve the highest available quality for headphones, speakers, or albums where you can hear the difference.
  • Download video only when the visual track is important; audio-only versions use less space.
  • Review and remove completed playlists after a trip rather than allowing several automatic caches to accumulate.

Consider expandable storage where supported

Some Android phones accept a microSD card, which can provide additional room for app-managed downloads. Compatibility, card support, and whether a particular app can place its protected downloads on removable storage vary by device and Android configuration. Check the phone manufacturer’s specifications and the app’s current storage options before buying a card; do not assume that every Android model or app can use it for offline media.

Keep downloads on Wi-Fi when possible

YouTube Music lets you choose Wi-Fi or permitted mobile-data behavior for downloads. A Wi-Fi-first approach avoids unexpected data charges and gives the app time to complete large playlists. Spotify’s quality setting also affects how long and how much data a first download requires, so prepare the library before departure rather than during a mobile-only connection.

How long do offline downloads last?

Neither service treats downloads as permanent files. YouTube Music says you must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads. Spotify likewise requires the account to go online at least once every 30 days so the library can sync and downloads remain active.

The monthly check is an account-validation and catalog-sync requirement, not a limit on listening hours. You can listen repeatedly while offline during that period, but an extended stretch without reconnecting can make the saved library unavailable until the app verifies the account again. Connect while signed in to the same account that created the downloads; switching accounts does not transfer them.

What should I do before a flight or trip?

A short preparation routine prevents most offline failures. Do it on a stable Wi-Fi connection, preferably the day before departure, and verify playback with connectivity disabled.

  1. Confirm that your YouTube Music Premium or Spotify Premium membership is active for the account on the Android device.
  2. Check free storage and remove old downloads, large videos, or unused apps if space is tight.
  3. Choose audio quality before starting a large Spotify download, and set YouTube Music audio/video quality to match your storage and listening needs.
  4. Download the exact playlists, albums, songs, podcast episodes, or videos you expect to use. Do not rely only on Smart Downloads or Offline Backup for a fixed itinerary.
  5. Wait for every download indicator to finish while still on Wi-Fi.
  6. Turn on airplane mode or disable Wi-Fi and mobile data, then play several downloaded items from each app.
  7. Reconnect both apps at least once every 30 days, even if you are not planning another trip.

Why are my downloads missing or not playing?

Most offline problems come from one of four causes: the download never completed, the device is full, the account has not reconnected within 30 days, or the app is signed into a different account. Check those conditions in that order before deleting and redownloading a large library.

The download is listed but will not start

  • Reconnect briefly and open the item to let the app refresh its license and catalog status.
  • Confirm that you are using the Premium account that created the music download.
  • Check Android storage and free enough space for the app to finish pending files.
  • Try a different downloaded item. If only one track fails, the issue may be specific to that catalog item rather than your entire offline library.

Smart Downloads or Offline Backup contains the wrong music

Automatic features are intentionally based on recent activity. Smart Downloads follows your YouTube Music listening history, while Offline Backup uses Spotify listening, queue, and related activity. For a predictable trip, manually download a playlist in addition to leaving the automatic feature enabled.

Downloads disappeared after changing phones

Offline files are stored on the device that downloaded them and are not ordinary audio exports. Sign in on the new Android device and download the desired collections again; the published Spotify allowance counts devices, and YouTube Music capacity is determined by the new device’s available storage.

Which app should you choose for your Android offline library?

Pick Spotify if you want to count tracks, spread downloads across several devices, set a specific download quality, or have an automatic fallback when you forget to prepare. Its published 10,000-track limit per device and five-device support make capacity planning straightforward, while lossless support is available on compatible combinations of account, catalog, and hardware.

Pick YouTube Music if your offline listening includes music videos, you want Smart Downloads to refresh a recent-listening mix, or you already organize listening around YouTube. Its Android documentation leaves the ceiling flexible: storage, file length, and quality determine how much fits, which can be advantageous on a phone with plenty of space but less predictable when you are planning a very large collection.

For either choice, the reliable routine is the same: use the paid music tier, download deliberately over Wi-Fi, verify playback before leaving coverage, keep storage available, and reconnect monthly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use offline downloads on an Android tablet as well as a phone?

YouTube Music’s Android guidance covers phones and tablets, and the same Premium download model applies. Spotify downloads are tied to supported devices on the account; sign in on the tablet and download the collections there rather than copying protected files from another device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do downloaded podcasts use the same Premium requirement as music?

No. YouTube Music says podcast episodes can be downloaded regardless of membership, and Spotify allows free users to download podcasts. Music downloads remain Premium-only on both services.

Should I rely on Smart Downloads or Offline Backup for an emergency playlist?

No. Both features select content automatically from recent activity, so their contents can change. Download a named playlist or album manually when you need guaranteed tracks, and keep the automatic feature as a supplement.

Can I move downloaded songs from one app into the other?

No. These are app-managed offline copies, not standard audio files exposed for transfer between services. Recreate the playlist in the other app and download it there under the appropriate membership.
