YouTube Music is more than a search box and a play button. Its Samples feed can turn swipes into a personalized discovery session, artist-based radio lets you control how familiar or adventurous a queue feels, and timed lyrics can act as a seek bar. Premium adds Smart Downloads, offline listening, background play and ad-free music, while audio-only playback can reduce data use. The exact menus and availability still depend on your country, device, account and the track itself.
This guide explains five underused features, how to find them, what each one is good for, and where free and Premium access differ.
What are the five hidden YouTube Music features?
The five features are Samples, custom artist radio, timed lyrics, Smart Downloads and audio-only playback. They solve different problems: finding unfamiliar music, shaping a queue, locating a verse, preparing listening for a trip and reducing video or data use.

YouTube Music supports phones, desktops, smart speakers, smart TVs, cars and smartwatches according to its Google Play listing. A feature that appears on a phone may use a different control or be unavailable on another device.

How do I use Samples to discover music?
Open the Samples tab and swipe through short clips. It is designed for quick decisions: keep a track, send it somewhere, or move on without building a search query first.
What can you do from a Sample?
YouTube describes Samples as “Discover new music with a swipe.” From a clip, you can save the song, share it, add it to a playlist, start a radio station, open its album, watch the full video or use the song in a Short. The feature is documented in YouTube’s YouTube Music app guide.
- Open YouTube Music on a supported mobile device.
- Select Samples from the app’s navigation when it is shown.
- Swipe through the clips. Use the save or playlist control when you want to keep a song.
- Open the action menu on a clip to share it, start a radio station, open the album or watch the complete video.
When is Samples more useful than search?
Use it when you know the mood or want something outside your current library but do not have an artist or song in mind. Saving a promising clip immediately prevents a discovery from disappearing when you swipe onward; you can sort those saves into a playlist later.

What are Samples’ limits?
Samples is a streaming discovery feed, not an offline catalog. Its availability and the actions shown can change by country, device, account and content, so a missing button does not necessarily indicate a problem with your subscription.

How can I build a YouTube Music radio station from artists I choose?
Instead of accepting a preset station, start radio with one or more artists and adjust the balance between familiar songs, discovery, popular tracks and deeper cuts. This gives you more control over the queue’s direction than a single-seed station.
How to create and tune the station
- Open an artist page or choose the option to start a radio station from a song or Sample.
- Add the artists you want as inputs. Use artists with a related sound for a focused station, or deliberately mix different styles for a broader one.
- Adjust the available controls for mood, Familiar versus Discover, and Popular versus Deep cuts.
- Start the queue, then remove songs or change the controls if the first results are too predictable or too far from your target.

What is Ask Music?
YouTube announced improvements to Ask Music on September 23, 2026. It is described as a conversational way to customize queues and explore artist lore, but the announcement says the update is coming soon worldwide, so the control may not yet appear on your account. Treat it as a rollout-dependent layer on top of radio rather than a guaranteed replacement for the existing artist controls. Details are in Google’s September 2026 announcement.
The same announcement reports more than 300 million songs in the catalog and 450 million artist discoveries in July 2026. Those figures describe YouTube Music’s worldwide service reporting, not a promise that every country receives the same catalog.
How do timed lyrics let me jump to a song section?
When synced lyrics are available, YouTube Music highlights words in time with the track. Tap a line to jump directly to that point, which is useful for practicing a verse, checking a remembered phrase or starting karaoke at a specific section.

Using a lyric as a seek control
- Play a song and open its Now Playing screen.
- Open the Lyrics panel.
- Scroll to the line you want. Tapping a synchronized line moves playback to that timestamp.
- Use the normal progress bar for fine adjustments if the lyric timing is not exactly where you need it.
YouTube highlights timed lyrics in its app guide. The Google Play listing also notes that features can differ by content and account; some tracks have lyrics without synchronization, and others have no lyrics panel at all. Region, licensing, device and rollout status can affect access.
Why might lyrics be missing or unsynchronized?
- The rights holder has not supplied lyrics for that recording.
- The available lyric text is not time-synced.
- The song version, live recording or remix is different from the version with lyrics.
- Your country, account type or current app rollout does not include the feature.
What does Smart Downloads do in YouTube Music?
For Premium members, Smart Downloads automatically saves music based on your listening history so an offline mix is ready without manually choosing every album. You can still download specific songs, albums, playlists and podcast episodes yourself.
Turn on Smart Downloads
- Open the YouTube Music mobile app and tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings, then Downloads (the label or location can vary by app version).
- Enable Smart downloads and review the storage or download-limit controls shown on your device.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or another reliable connection and allow the app time to prepare the mix.
YouTube’s Smart Downloads help page explains the automatic-download behavior. If you want a ready-made offline session without selecting tracks, use the app’s shuffle downloads option; for precise control, download a named playlist or album instead.
How long do downloads remain available?
A downloaded library must reconnect to YouTube Music at least once every 30 days. That check lets the service confirm account and content availability; it is not the same as streaming every downloaded song again. How does audio-only mode save data, and what does Premium add?
Audio-only playback prevents the music video from loading, which can reduce data use and make playback more reliable on a weak connection. Premium also keeps music or podcasts playing after the mobile app is closed, and includes ad-free music and music downloads.
Use audio-only playback
- Start a song in YouTube Music.
- Open the playback or account settings and select the audio-only option, such as Don’t play music videos, when that label is available.
- Leave video mode enabled when you specifically want concert footage, lyrics videos or other visual content.
Menu wording differs across Android, iPhone, desktop and connected devices. Audio-only streaming still uses a connection unless the track has been downloaded. Background play, music downloads and ad-free music are Premium benefits; podcast playback and ad behavior can differ by show and region, as YouTube explains in its Premium and downloads guidance.
When is audio-only the better choice?
- On mobile data when the video adds no value.
- In a car or speaker where you cannot see the screen.
- When a video stream causes buffering but an audio stream remains stable.
- When you want background listening after leaving the app, provided your account and content support Premium background play.
Which hidden features work without Premium?
There is no single worldwide free-versus-Premium matrix because licensing, device support and rollout status vary. The practical distinction is that discovery, radio and some lyric functions may be available on the free service, while offline music, ad-free music and reliable background music playback are central Premium benefits.

How do device and rollout differences affect these features?
Check the phone app first when testing a feature, then look for the equivalent control on desktop, a car display, a smart speaker, a TV or a watch. YouTube Music lists support across those device categories, and YouTube has announced a partnership bringing the service to Garmin watches; a Wear OS watch is another plausible wrist-control option, but no specific model is required.

Three differences are especially common:
- Account and country: licensing and staged releases can make a control appear for one account but not another.
- Device type: a car or speaker may expose play and skip controls without showing Samples or full lyrics.
- Content version: a studio recording, live performance, remix or podcast episode can have different lyrics, download and background-play rights.
Ask Music and the personalized podcast audio guide announced on September 23, 2026 were described as coming soon worldwide. If they are absent, update the app, confirm that you are signed into the intended account and allow for a staged rollout rather than assuming the feature was removed.
How should I combine the five features for everyday listening?
Use the features as a sequence rather than five unrelated switches:
- Start in Samples when you want unfamiliar music.
- Save promising tracks and use one or more artists to build a radio with the familiarity and deep-cut controls.
- Open Lyrics when a line catches your attention, then tap the line to revisit that section.
- Add keepers to a playlist and download that playlist manually for a planned trip, or let Smart Downloads refresh an automatic mix.
- Choose audio-only for mobile data, cars and speakers; switch to video only when the visuals matter.
This workflow separates discovery from curation and offline preparation. It also gives you a fallback: if a new feature has not reached your account, ordinary artist radio, manual playlists and manual downloads still cover the same basic listening goals.

Can I use YouTube Music Samples without an internet connection?
Samples is a live clip feed, so it needs a connection to load new clips. If you find a song there, save it and download the track or playlist with a supported Premium account before going offline.
Why did Smart Downloads replace songs I expected to keep?
Smart Downloads is designed to refresh selections from your listening history rather than preserve a fixed collection. Keep permanent travel or workout music in a named playlist and download that playlist manually.
Can I see timed lyrics on a car display or smartwatch?
Not necessarily. Connected-device interfaces expose a smaller set of controls, and lyrics depend on the specific app, vehicle or watch integration, country and recording rights; the phone app is the most reliable place to check.
Is Ask Music available to every YouTube Music subscriber now?
