To start playing World of Warcraft today, create a Battle.net account, install the Battle.net desktop app, select the standard retail version of World of Warcraft, and use its free trial. Retail lets you play all content through level 20, including level-20 dungeons and quests, without paying. When you want to continue beyond level 20, add a subscription or Game Time; Blizzard says that access then includes progression through level 80. Midnight, the current expansion as of October 29, 2026, is a separate purchase for the newer campaign and progression toward level 90. You do not need to buy it before deciding whether the game suits you.

Which version of World of Warcraft should a new player install?

For a first character, install the standard retail game. It is the version with the current free trial, the guided newcomer route, and the modern expansion path. WoW Classic is a separate version with a different progression experience, while World of Warcraft: Forever is scheduled for November 4, 2026 and is not the retail free-trial route described here.

Version New-player access Progression context Choose it when
Retail Free trial through level 20 Subscription or Game Time opens content through level 80; Midnight extends the current expansion path toward level 90 You want the current guided introduction and modern game
Classic No separate free trial; a subscription provides access Uses its own, older-style version and progression Your friends play Classic or you specifically want that ruleset
Forever Blizzard says it will require a subscription or Game Time Scheduled to launch November 4, 2026 You are deliberately choosing that version after launch, not looking for the retail trial

These versions should not be treated as interchangeable. A friend’s version, realm, and character community can determine whether you can play together, so confirm those details before making a character.

What do I need before installing WoW?

You need a Battle.net account, a Windows PC or Mac that meets Blizzard’s current requirements, and enough time for the game client to install and update. You do not need an expansion purchase for the retail trial.

  • Computer: Check the complete requirements for your operating system before buying hardware. Blizzard’s displayed Windows graphics requirement calls for a DirectX 12-capable 3 GB graphics processor; that is a compatibility threshold, not a universal instruction to purchase a new card.
  • Friends’ details: Ask which version and realm your friends use. Realm choice matters most when you want characters in the same home community.
  • Connection and storage: Use a reliable internet connection and leave room for the current client and updates. Blizzard’s requirements page is the authority for the current software and hardware details.

How do I create an account and install the retail game?

Use the Battle.net desktop application rather than selecting a version from memory. The labels below are the current retail-install flow described by Blizzard.

  1. Create or sign in to Battle.net. Complete account creation or log in to the account you will use for the character. Keep access to the account’s email and security methods.
  2. Install the desktop app. Download and install the Battle.net application for Windows or Mac from Blizzard. Sign in after the installer finishes.
  3. Select World of Warcraft. In the app’s game list, choose World of Warcraft. Open the game-version menu and select the standard retail version. Do not choose Classic if you are following the free-trial instructions, and do not select the forthcoming Forever version.
  4. Choose the intended account. If the app shows more than one World of Warcraft account, select the one you want to use. This prevents a character or subscription from being associated with the wrong account.
  5. Click Install. Accept the proposed installation location or choose another drive with adequate space, then let the launcher download the client and required updates.
  6. Click Play. Launch the game from Battle.net. If an update appears before the Play button becomes available, allow it to finish rather than interrupting the patch.

If the game opens to a version-selection screen, stop and verify the label before creating a character. Retail, Classic, and the announced Forever release are different choices, not names for the same client mode.

How should I choose a realm when my friends already play?

Ask your friends for their exact realm and version before you create a character. Blizzard distinguishes normal realms from role-play realms, and the social experience can differ across versions, so a realm that sounds similar may not be the one your group uses.

Normal and role-play realms

Normal realms are the standard choice for players who want regular questing, dungeons, raids, and player-versus-player options without a role-play expectation. Role-play realms are intended for communities that treat character identity and in-world behavior as part of the experience. Read the realm label carefully and choose the environment you will enjoy, not merely the first name in the list.

War Mode and open-world PvP

War Mode controls whether you participate in open-world player-versus-player combat under the rules Blizzard describes. Blizzard says the War Mode toggle appears in the talents interface at level 20 and specifies where it can be enabled or disabled. You can therefore begin the trial without making an immediate open-world PvP commitment; review the in-game option when your character reaches that point.

If no friends are waiting for you

Choose a normal realm unless you specifically want role-play. A realm with a name you can remember is easier to communicate to friends later. Avoid creating several trial characters across random realms until you know where your group plays, because your characters and social contacts are tied to the choices you make in the client.

Which class and race should a beginner pick?

Pick a character concept you genuinely want to play rather than searching for a supposedly easiest class. Class balance and combat design are being revised substantially with Midnight, so a rigid “best beginner class” ranking would quickly become misleading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the concept test

  • Choose a class whose role sounds appealing: dealing damage, protecting allies, or restoring health.
  • Choose a race and appearance you will enjoy seeing during many hours of questing.
  • If you may play with friends, ask whether your group has a preferred faction, role, or class utility.
  • Do not worry about making a permanent commitment during the trial. You can create another character after learning how the basic controls feel.

Why the first minutes feel manageable

Blizzard’s newcomer path starts in Exile’s Reach. It teaches movement, interacting with objects and characters, using class abilities, and managing inventory in a controlled sequence. Follow its prompts instead of skipping immediately to an unfamiliar zone; the early quests establish the interface vocabulary used later.

What should I do during my first session?

Stay with the guided introduction long enough to learn the core controls, then use the story route to understand where current content fits. The following sequence keeps a new player from getting lost in the game’s many menus.

  1. Complete Exile’s Reach. Read the movement and interaction prompts, try each ability on the action bar, and open your inventory when the tutorial asks. These lessons are more useful than rushing to a higher-level area without knowing how to repair, equip, or sell items.
  2. Accept the next story lead. After the introduction, follow the game’s recommended quest direction rather than abandoning the chain for every optional objective on the map.
  3. Play through Dragonflight. Blizzard describes Dragonflight as the first major stage of the guided route, with progression toward level 70. Focus on the main story markers if the number of side quests becomes confusing.
  4. Continue into The War Within. The next campaign leads toward level 80 and introduces the setting and systems used by the current expansion path.
  5. Add Midnight only when you want its content. If you buy the current expansion, continue into Midnight and its progression toward level 90. Buying it is not required to sample retail through level 20.
  6. Use Story Mode when available. Blizzard describes Story Mode raid encounters as a lower-pressure way to follow relevant narrative. It is a useful option for a newcomer who wants the story without immediately joining a high-coordination group.
  7. Check newcomer chat. When available on your character and realm, newcomer chat connects new players with experienced guides and other beginners. Use it for interface questions, quest directions, and explanations of unfamiliar terms.

Is World of Warcraft free to play?

Retail has a genuine free trial, but it is not an unlimited free-to-play game. Blizzard states: “All playable content is free up to level 20, including level 20 Dungeons and quests, with a Free Trial.” To continue beyond level 20, you need a subscription or Game Time.

What the trial includes

The trial lets you create a retail character, complete the newcomer introduction, quest, and reach the level-20 limit. It also includes level-20 dungeons and quests. This is enough to learn movement, combat, inventory, quest tracking, and the basic rhythm of an MMO before paying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What changes after level 20

A subscription or Game Time removes the trial’s level ceiling and provides access to the subscription-included game content. Blizzard says that access covers progression through level 80. The exact social and account features available under a paid account can change, so check Blizzard’s current account page when you are ready to subscribe.

Do I need Midnight immediately?

No. Subscription or Game Time and the latest expansion are separate purchasing steps. Start with the trial, add subscription access when you want to continue past 20, and consider Midnight when you are ready for its campaign and level-90 progression. Presenting the expansion as a prerequisite to test the game would give a new player the wrong cost decision.

Should I play retail or WoW Classic?

Choose retail if you want the supported free trial and Blizzard’s current newcomer route. Choose Classic only when you specifically want its separate ruleset or your friends already play there; Blizzard explicitly says the retail free trial does not apply to Classic.

Question Retail Classic
Can I try it without paying? Yes, through level 20 No separate Classic trial
What teaches the basics? Exile’s Reach and the guided modern route A separate, older-style starting experience
What determines whether I can play with friends? Matching the retail realm and version Matching the Classic version and realm
What is the sensible first choice for an undecided newcomer? Start here and use the trial Choose only for a specific Classic preference or friend group

A subscription provides access to retail and Classic, but that does not merge their characters, quests, or progression. Treat each as its own game mode when planning where to spend your first evening.

What is World of Warcraft: Forever, and should I install it?

World of Warcraft: Forever is an announced version scheduled for November 4, 2026. Blizzard says it will require a subscription or Game Time, so it is not an equivalent replacement for the retail free trial described in this guide.

As of October 29, 2026, install standard retail if your goal is to begin at no cost and learn the current game. After Forever launches, verify Blizzard’s updated version labels and access rules before selecting it; a launcher update can make several similarly named choices appear together.

Will my computer run WoW?

Check Blizzard’s complete, current requirements for your operating system before spending money on an upgrade. The displayed Windows graphics specification includes a DirectX 12-capable 3 GB GPU, but that single line does not prove that every computer needs a new graphics card or that a desktop card will fit a laptop or Mac.

How to check without buying hardware

  1. Identify whether your computer runs Windows or macOS and note its processor, memory, graphics hardware, and available storage.
  2. Compare each item with Blizzard’s current requirements, not only the graphics line.
  3. On Windows, check the graphics adapter in the system’s display or device information and confirm DirectX 12 support.
  4. On a laptop or Mac, verify the exact model and upgrade limits; desktop graphics cards are not universal replacements for integrated or soldered hardware.
  5. Install the trial and observe whether the launcher accepts the configuration before considering a purchase.

If an upgradeable Windows desktop fails the full requirements, search for a compatible graphics card only after confirming the slot, power supply, case clearance, and system support. A 3 GB DirectX 12-capable specification is conditional evidence for compatibility, not a shopping list.

What should I learn before leaving the tutorial?

Before moving beyond Exile’s Reach, make sure you can perform these actions without guessing at every menu.

  • Move, jump, and interact with a quest giver or object.
  • Read the objective tracker and open the map to locate the next step.
  • Place an ability on the action bar and recognize when it is unavailable.
  • Equip an item, open your bags, and distinguish equipment from usable items.
  • Accept, complete, and turn in a quest.
  • Find the talents interface and understand that War Mode is a separate PvP setting.
  • Recognize the chat channels, including newcomer chat when it is available.
  • Ask your friends which realm and version they use before creating a permanent group of characters.

What common first-day problems can I fix?

I installed the wrong version

Close the game, return to Battle.net, and open the game-version menu beside the World of Warcraft entry. Select standard retail for the free trial. If you already created a character in another version, it remains associated with that version; changing the launcher selection does not convert it.

The game asks me to pay before level 20

Confirm that you selected retail rather than Classic or another version, and verify that you are signed into the intended Battle.net account. Retail’s free trial covers playable content through level 20; a payment prompt before that point usually indicates a version, account, or region issue rather than a requirement to buy Midnight.

I cannot find my friend

Compare the exact version, realm, character name, and faction with your friend. Do not assume that similarly named realms or characters share the same social features across versions. If your friend is on a role-play realm and you chose a normal realm, coordinate before starting another character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

I am overwhelmed by quests

Return to the main story marker and follow the recommended campaign. Complete Exile’s Reach first, then use the Dragonflight and The War Within story leads instead of accepting every optional quest in sight. Story Mode, when available, can provide narrative context without requiring a high-pressure raid group.

The launcher will not start the game

Check that Battle.net has finished updating, that you selected the intended account, and that your computer meets the complete current requirements. If the launcher identifies a graphics or operating-system mismatch, resolve that compatibility issue before buying an expansion or replacing hardware.

When should I pay for a subscription or buy Midnight?

Pay for subscription or Game Time when the level-20 limit, not advertising, is the reason you want to continue. Buy Midnight when you specifically want its current campaign and progression toward level 90 after deciding that retail is the version you will keep playing.

  1. Trial first: Complete enough of Exile’s Reach and early quests to judge the controls, story pace, and class concept.
  2. Subscription next: Add Game Time or a subscription when you want access beyond level 20 and the subscription-included route toward level 80.
  3. Expansion later: Purchase Midnight for its current expansion content rather than treating it as an entry ticket.
  4. Coordinate with friends: Before committing to a long-term character, confirm the realm, version, and play schedule your group uses.

How do I make my first evening enjoyable?

Keep the first session narrow: learn the controls, finish the introduction, and follow the next story lead. Avoid judging the whole game by an advanced class guide, a raid video, or a list of endgame systems you have not encountered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use the default interface until you understand what each panel does.
  • Read ability tooltips once, then practice the abilities on ordinary quest enemies.
  • Keep a short note of your realm, character name, and friends’ versions.
  • Ask newcomer chat for an explanation instead of accepting an unexplained invitation or teleport.
  • Stop at level 20 if you are unsure; the trial is specifically designed to let you decide before paying.

The practical starting path is therefore simple: retail client, Exile’s Reach, guided story, trial through level 20, subscription when you want level 21 and beyond, and Midnight only when its content is worth adding for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play World of Warcraft on a Mac?

Yes, Blizzard provides a Mac version of the Battle.net desktop app and World of Warcraft client. Check the current Mac-specific requirements for your model rather than applying the Windows graphics specification to it.

Can two new players level together from the beginning?

They can coordinate their retail characters after confirming the same version and realm, then follow the same quest route. Ask both players to finish or skip the introduction consistently so one character is not far ahead when the other reaches the next story area.

What happens to my trial character if I subscribe later?

The character remains on the retail account you used; adding Game Time or a subscription lets that account continue beyond the trial limit. Make sure you select the same Battle.net game account when purchasing access.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Is War Mode required for dungeons or the main story?

No. War Mode is an open-world PvP setting, and Blizzard places its toggle in the talents interface at level 20. You can learn the introductory quests and try dungeons without treating open-world PvP as a mandatory beginner step.
